Identification Of Four-Jointed Box 1 As A Potential Oncogene In Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma / Muhammad Mamduh Bin Ahmad Zabidi, Muhammad Mamduh Ahmad Zabidi

Student Works (2010-2019)

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a highly metastatic cancer that is endemic in South East Asia and Southern China. Despite the gravity of the disease, the current knowledge on its molecular pathogenesis is still inadequate to improve the disease management. The present study seeks to understand the molecular mechanism of NPC, with an aim to identify potential therapeutic targets or biomarkers. From a previous expression microarray study, Four – Jointed Box 1 (FJX1) gene was found to be upregulated in NPC compared to non-cancerous controls with negligible expression in 5 vital normal human organs. Human FJX1 is a Drosophila orthologue of …

¡Silencio! Undocumented Immigrant Witnesses And The Right To Silence, Violeta R. Chapin Jan 2011

¡Silencio! Undocumented Immigrant Witnesses And The Right To Silence, Violeta R. Chapin

Publications

At a time referred to as "an unprecedented era of immigration enforcement," undocumented immigrants who have the misfortune to witness a crime in this country face a terrible decision. Calling the police to report that crime will likely lead to questions that reveal a witness's immigration status, resulting in detention and deportation for the undocumented immigrant witness. Programs like Secure Communities and 287(g) partnerships evidence an increase in local immigration enforcement, and this Article argues that undocumented witnesses' only logical response to these programs is silence. Silence, in the form of a complete refusal to call the police to report …

An Unintended Casualty Of The War On Terror, Aya Gruber Jan 2011

An Unintended Casualty Of The War On Terror, Aya Gruber

Publications

As the dust of the Bush administration's war on terror settles, casualties are starting to appear on the legal battlefield. The United States' human rights reputation and the Supreme Court's international influence lay wounded in the wake of U.S. policies that flouted international law by advocating torture, suborning indefinite detention, and erecting irregular tribunals. Through declining citation, the courts of the world are telling the Supreme Court that if it does not respect international and foreign law, international and foreign courts will not respect it. Some might object that the Supreme Court should not be lumped with the Bush administration …

Cooking Up A Nation: Food, Culture, And Identity In The Early American Republic, Karen Anne Bailor Jan 2011

Cooking Up A Nation: Food, Culture, And Identity In The Early American Republic, Karen Anne Bailor

All Master's Theses

Post-Revolutionary American food, common and genteel, acted as both a construct of and contributor to the development of an American national identity as well as a national culinary identity. From 1796 and into the early nineteenth century, Americans actively strove to distinguish themselves from their British backgrounds. As a result, the public discourse of American food shifted to reflect new values of simplicity and equality. Additionally, a new American cuisine began to take shape which embraced native crops, linking those who consumed them to the American soil, and ultimately, the new nation. Through the presence of particular dishes at politically …

Reading Charles Black Writing: "The Lawfulness Of The Segregation Decisions" Revisited, Kendall Thomas Jan 2011

Reading Charles Black Writing: "The Lawfulness Of The Segregation Decisions" Revisited, Kendall Thomas

Faculty Scholarship

The year 2010 marked the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of Charles L. Black, Jr.'s "The Lawfulness of the Segregation Decisions." Professor Black's magisterial essay on the Supreme Court's 1954-1955 decisions in Brown v. Board of Education and its companion cases is, by any account, a foundational text in the scholarly literature on race and law in the United States. Black's short but searing defense of Brown introduced ideas and arguments about race, about law, and about the law of race that transformed the field. I can think of no better way to celebrate this inaugural issue of the Columbia …

Myosin Vi Regulates Actin Structure Specialization Through Conserved Cargo-Binding Domain Sites, Mamiko Isaji, Marta Lenartowska, Tatsuhiko Noguchi, Deborah J. Frank, Kathryn G. Miller Jan 2011

Myosin Vi Regulates Actin Structure Specialization Through Conserved Cargo-Binding Domain Sites, Mamiko Isaji, Marta Lenartowska, Tatsuhiko Noguchi, Deborah J. Frank, Kathryn G. Miller

Biology Faculty Research

Actin structures are often stable, remaining unchanged in organization for the lifetime of a differentiated cell. Little is known about stable actin structure formation, organization, or maintenance. During Drosophila spermatid individualization, long-lived actin cones mediate cellular remodeling. Myosin VI is necessary for building the dense meshwork at the cones' fronts. We test several ideas for myosin VI's mechanism of action using domain deletions or site-specific mutations of myosin VI. The head (motor) and globular tail (cargo-binding) domains were both needed for localization at the cone front and dense meshwork formation. Several conserved partner-binding sites in the globular tail previously identified …

Molecular Mechanisms Of Itch Sensations, Seungil Kim Jan 2011

Molecular Mechanisms Of Itch Sensations, Seungil Kim

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Itch is a sensation which causes scratching response to protect skin against external harmful reagents. Acute itch arises in short time period after insect bites or allergen contact. Chronic itch happens in various skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis: AD) and psoriasis. Chronic itch usually continues for over six weeks and is resistant to commonly used anti-histamine drugs. While pain has caught an early attention due to its severity, the molecular mechanism of itch has not been studied in detail. Itch and pain share common features because they are transmitted by similar neuronal circuits. However, itch is a distinct somatosensation …

The Role Of Inflammation In Pathogenesis And Treatment Of Globoid-Cell Leukodystrophy, Adarsh Reddy Jan 2011

The Role Of Inflammation In Pathogenesis And Treatment Of Globoid-Cell Leukodystrophy, Adarsh Reddy

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Globoid-cell leukodystrophy: GLD, Krabbe's disease) is an autosomal recessive disease caused by a deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme galactosylceramidase: GALC). It results in altered catabolism of the myelin lipid Galactosylceramide. The disease predominantly affects the white matter of the CNS and the myelin sheath of the peripheral nerves. The infantile form of the disease is characterized by early onset between 3-6 months of age with symptoms of irritability, dysphagia, spasticity, cognitive and sensory deterioration and seizures. Death usually occurs by two years of age. Currently, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is the only available option for patients with the disease. Inflammation …

Visualizing Law In The Age Of The Digital Baroque: Arabesques & Entanglements, Richard K. Sherwin Jan 2011

Visualizing Law In The Age Of The Digital Baroque: Arabesques & Entanglements, Richard K. Sherwin

Books

Visualizing Law in the Age of the Digital Baroque explores the profound impact that visual digital technologies are having on the practice and theory of law. Today, lawyers, judges, and lay jurors face a vast array of visual evidence and visual argument. From videos documenting crimes and accidents to computer displays of their digital simulation, increasingly, the search for fact-based justice inside the courtroom is becoming an offshoot of visual meaning making. But when law migrates to the screen it lives there as other images do, motivating belief and judgment on the basis of visual delight and unconscious fantasies and …

Humanity's Law, Ruti G. Teitel Jan 2011

Humanity's Law, Ruti G. Teitel

Books

Post-Cold War history has witnessed a transformation in the relationship of law to violence in global politics. The normative foundations of the international legal order have been shifting their emphasis from state security to human security: the security of persons and peoples. Increasingly, courts, tribunals, other international bodies, and political actors draw from this new framework to assess the rights and wrongs of conflict; determine whether and how to intervene; and impose accountability and responsibility on state and non-state actors. The result of this shift is the law of humanity — a framework that spans the law of war, international …

'If We Govern Ourselves, Whose Son Is To Govern Us?': Youth, Independence And The 1960s In Lesotho, John Aerni-Flessner Jan 2011

'If We Govern Ourselves, Whose Son Is To Govern Us?': Youth, Independence And The 1960s In Lesotho, John Aerni-Flessner

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Young people in Lesotho worked actively to bring about their own conceptions of the nation in late colonial and early independence Lesotho. These youth drew on a wide range of local, national and international ideas to push for institutional change that would benefit themselves as individuals, and the nation as a whole. Tapping into larger global debates about development, the Cold War and the role of youth in societies, young Basotho actively participated in and wanted a say in the changes coming with independence. This work rethinks African nationalism, seeing a wider range of people willing and able to identify …

Interactions Between Bmp And Canonical Wnt Signaling Regulate Critical Stages Of The Osteoblast Lifecycle, Valerie Salazar Jan 2011

Interactions Between Bmp And Canonical Wnt Signaling Regulate Critical Stages Of The Osteoblast Lifecycle, Valerie Salazar

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Skeletal development and post-natal bone homeostasis are dependent on the coordinated activity of bone-forming cells called osteoblasts and bone-resorbing cells called osteoclasts. Over 10 million people in the US currently suffer from osteoporosis, which increases the risk of low-trauma fractures and accounts for health care expenditures exceeding $14 billion per year. Osteoporosis is often treated with anti-resorptive compounds, primarily bisphosphonates, which inhibit osteoclast-mediated bone destruction. However, these drugs do not restore bone mass, which can only be accomplished by activation new bone formation, as with intermittent parathyroid hormone therapy. The development of additional bone "anabolic" therapies will require genetic and …

Relational Selves In Eighteenth-Century Literature, Kate Parker Jan 2011

Relational Selves In Eighteenth-Century Literature, Kate Parker

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

We imagine the eighteenth century to be the time when modern individuals constituted themselves against the forces of communal obligation, when marriage emerged as a union based on singular affection, and when heterosexuality cohered as an ideology. But Relational Selves in Eighteenth Century Literature argues that a libertine logic of communal attraction, spontaneous affiliation, and transitory affection remains central to the literary production of modern selfhood in the eighteenth century. It thus departs from well-established critical narratives that entwine the modern self with the eighteenth-century emergence of sexual complementarity, the companionate marriage, and bourgeois individualism. I show instead how eighteenth-century …

An Occupation-Based Program For The Dual Diagnosis Of An Eating Disorder And Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Tessa Larson, Dana Rome Jan 2011

An Occupation-Based Program For The Dual Diagnosis Of An Eating Disorder And Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Tessa Larson, Dana Rome

Occupational Therapy Capstones

The purpose of this project was to develop an occupation-based occupational therapy program for the dual diagnosis of an eating disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder for use in an outpatient setting. A literature review was conducted to identify the challenges associated with the assessment and treatment of eating disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder. The literature supports the need for occupation-based interventions, especially in the areas of self-care, meal planning and preparation, sleep and rest, leisure, and various life skills. Guided by the Model of Human Occupation in conjunction with cognitive behavioral therapy techniques, an occupation-based program guide was developed. The …

An Afterschool Toolkit For Implementing Occupation-Based Activities, Kelsey Miller, Kayla Petersen Jan 2011

An Afterschool Toolkit For Implementing Occupation-Based Activities, Kelsey Miller, Kayla Petersen

Occupational Therapy Capstones

"Each day in America, millions of kids go home to an empty house after school" (Afterschool Alliance, 2009, p.1). The Afterschool Alliance (2009) indicates that based on a 2009 survey of30,000 families, there are more children unsupervised each afternoon in the U.S. and the demand for afterschool programming is higher than ever. In the United States, 30% of middle school students and 4% of elementary aged children are responsible for taking care of themselves and only 15% currently participate in an afterschool program (Afterschool Alliance, 2009, pg. 4). Students are at particular risk during these hours, millions are unsupervised each …

The International Legal Right To Individual Compensation In Nepal And The Transitional Justice Context, Matthew F. Putori Jan 2011

The International Legal Right To Individual Compensation In Nepal And The Transitional Justice Context, Matthew F. Putori

Fordham International Law Journal

Part I of this Note provides a brief political history of Nepal since the mid-eighteenth century; defines the concept of transitional justice; and explores the international law of remedy, reparations, and compensation. Part II focuses on the right to individual compensation in order to determine which human rights violations trigger a state's legal obligation to compensate victims, and then applies that right to the transitional justice context. Finally, Part III proposes the design of an individual compensation program in which Nepal, and other transitional states, can fulfill legal obligations while simultaneously working toward peace, democracy, and development.

A3p: Adaptive Policy Prediction For Shared Images Over Popular Content Sharing Sites, Anna Squicciarini, Smitha Sundareswaran, Dan Lin, Josh Wede

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

More and more people go online today and share their personal images using popular web services like Picasa. While enjoying the convenience brought by advanced technology, people also become aware of the privacy issues of data being shared. Recent studies have highlighted that people expect more tools to allow them to regain control over their privacy. in this work, we propose an Adaptive Privacy Policy Prediction (A3P) system to help users compose privacy settings for their images. in particular, we examine the role of image content and metadata as possible indicators of users' privacy preferences. We propose a two-level image …

Understanding The Development Of Tissue Engineered Blood Vessels, Rajendra Fernando Sawh Martinez Jan 2011

Understanding The Development Of Tissue Engineered Blood Vessels, Rajendra Fernando Sawh Martinez

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the world. In the United States alone, the American Heart Association estimates the cost of treating CVD in 2009 to be $475.3 billion. Suitable autologous blood vessels are often scarce, especially for patients who require multiple procedures. There is a global demand for improved, biocompatible vascular conduits to address these shortcomings. Biodegradable tubular scaffolds are currently being evaluated as vascular grafts in the surgical treatment of cardiovascular disease. Seeding scaffolds with bone marrow-derived mononuclear cells (BMCs) prior to implantation has been shown to significantly improve outcomes. However, the role these cells …
