Cooperative Approaches Indicating To Capacity And Power Control For Ad Hoc Wireless Network, Liuju Wu, Maciej Jan Zawodniok Sep 2011

Cooperative Approaches Indicating To Capacity And Power Control For Ad Hoc Wireless Network, Liuju Wu, Maciej Jan Zawodniok

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, two integrated schemes for fair capacity allocation and power control for ad hoc wireless network are presented. the game theory approach is utilized to derive a collaborative update law. in the practical wireless network, a non-uniform distribution of nodes results in varying degree of interference among the network links or hops. Such varying mutual interference may lead to unfair allocation of bandwidth and result in network congestion. as a result, some links may become bottlenecks for the entire network. Hence, it is important to fairly allocate resources in the entire network. the proposed schemes aim to address …

Theoretical Capacity Analysis For Multi-Hop Backscatter Communication Networks, Aditya V. Padaki, Maciej J. Zawodniok Sep 2011

Theoretical Capacity Analysis For Multi-Hop Backscatter Communication Networks, Aditya V. Padaki, Maciej J. Zawodniok

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Traditionally wireless sensor networks (WSNs) employ active RF communication where the RF signal has to be generated at nodes, thus consuming a significant amount of energy. in contrast, employment of passive communication, where nodes backscatter a modulated version of the incident RF signal, offers great advantages including reducing the energy cost of communication. Existing example includes a traditional RFID system with active reader communicating directly with passive tags. However, the proposed approach targets future, more advanced systems that support a generic backscatter communication. However, the inherent asymmetry in communication, reliance on external source of RF signal, and limited energy storage …

Security Requirements Analysis, Specification, Prioritization And Policy Development In Cyber-Physical Systems, Kenneth Kofi Fletcher, Xiaoqing Liu

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In recent past, the security of cyber-physical systems (CPSs) has been the subject of major concern. One of the reasons is that CPSs are often applied to mission-critical processes. Also, the automation CPSs bring in managing physical processes, and the detail of information available to them for carrying out their tasks, make securing them a prime importance. Securing CPSs is a difficult task as systems are interconnected. in order to achieve a continuous secured CPS environment, there is the need for an integrated methodology to analyze, specify and prioritize security requirements and also to develop policies to meet them. First, …

Students' Gender Bias In Teaching Evaluations, Narissra Punyanunt-Carter, Stacy L Carter

Higher Learning Research Communications

The goal of this study was to investigate if there is gender bias in student evaluations. Researchers administered a modified version of the teacher evaluation forms to 58 students (male=30; female=28) in a basic introductory communications class. Half the class was instructed to fill out the survey about a male professor, and the other half a female professor. Researchers broke down the evaluation results question by question in order to give a detailed account of the findings. Results revealed that there is certainly some gender bias at work when students evaluate their instructors. It was also found that gender bias …

Evolution And Distribution Of Record-Breaking High And Low Monthly Mean Temperatures, Amalia Anderson, Alexander Kostinski Sep 2011

Evolution And Distribution Of Record-Breaking High And Low Monthly Mean Temperatures, Amalia Anderson, Alexander Kostinski

Department of Physics Publications

The ratio of record highs to record lows is examined with respect to extent of time series for monthly mean temperatures within the continental United States for 1900–2006. In counting the number of records that occur in a single year, the authors find a ratio greater than unity in 2006, increasing nearly monotonically as the time series increases in length via a variable first year over 1900–76. For example, in 2006, the ratio of record highs to record lows ≈ 13:1 with 1950 as the first year and ≈ 25:1 with 1900 as the first year; both ratios are an …

Schrödinger and Nietzsche on Life: The Eternal Recurrence of the Same

This essay explores Schrödinger’s reflections on measurement, consciousness, and personal identity. Schrödinger’s, What Is Life? is read together with Nietzsche’s own reflections on the same question, in his aphorism What is Life? together with Nietzsche’s teaching of the eternal return of the selfsame. Schrödinger’s own thinking is influenced as is Nietzsche’s by Schopenhauer but Schrödinger also has the Vedic tradition as this influenced Schopenhauer himself in view.

Bland-Altman Plots For Evaluating Agreement Between Solid Tumor Measurements, Chaya S. Moskowitz, Mithat Gonen Sep 2011

Bland-Altman Plots For Evaluating Agreement Between Solid Tumor Measurements, Chaya S. Moskowitz, Mithat Gonen

Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Dept. of Epidemiology & Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Rationale and Objectives. Solid tumor measurements are regularly used in clinical trials of anticancer therapeutic agents and in clinical practice managing patients' care. Consequently studies evaluating the reproducibility of solid tumor measurements are important as lack of reproducibility may directly affect patient management. The authors propose utilizing a modified Bland-Altman plot with a difference metric that lends itself naturally to this situation and facilitates interpretation. Materials and Methods. The modification to the Bland-Altman plot involves replacing the difference plotted on the vertical axis with the relative percent change (RC) between the two measurements. This quantity is the same one used …

Biogeochemical Response Of Alpine Lakes To A Recent Increase In Dust Deposition In The Southwestern, Us, Ashley P. Ballantyne, Janice Brahney, C. L. Lawrence, J. Saros, Jason C. Neff

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

The deposition of dust has recently increased significantly over some regions of the western US. Here we explore how changes in dust deposition have affected the biogeochemistry of two alpine watersheds in Colorado, US. We first reconstruct recent changes in the mass accumulation rate of sediments and then we use isotopic measurements in conjunction with a Bayesian mixing model to infer that approximately 95% of the inorganic fraction of lake sediments is derived from dust. Elemental analyses of modern dust indicate that dust is enriched in Ca, Cr, Cu, Mg, Ni, and in one watershed, Fe and P relative to …

Drawbacks With It Outsourcing; Dealing With The End Of The Contract, Michael Muntean Sep 2011

Drawbacks With It Outsourcing; Dealing With The End Of The Contract, Michael Muntean

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Many companies have looked to outsourcing Information Technology infrastructure and business processes as a means to save capital and streamline company business and assets. While companies initially approach outsourcing engagements concentrating on the migration of data and services to the vendor company, they rarely take into account potential issues that could possibly cause an outsourcing engagement to fail. Failure to address these potential issues within the contract can lead a business to be stuck in an outsourcing engagement that offers little to no benefit to the company. This project presents the details of a survey performed at a business that …

A Branching Process For Virus Survival, J. Theodore Cox, Rinaldo B. Schinazi Sep 2011

A Branching Process For Virus Survival, J. Theodore Cox, Rinaldo B. Schinazi

Mathematics - All Scholarship

Quasispecies theory predicts that there is a critical mutation probability above which a viral population will go extinct. Above this threshold the virus loses the ability to replicate the best adapted genotype, leading to a population composed of low replicating mutants that is eventually doomed. We propose a new branching model that shows that this is not necessarily so. That is, a population composed of ever changing mutants may survive.

Toric Symmetry Of Cp3, Dagan Karp, Dhruv Ranganathan, Paul Riggins '12, Ursula Whitcher Sep 2011

Toric Symmetry Of Cp3, Dagan Karp, Dhruv Ranganathan, Paul Riggins '12, Ursula Whitcher

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We exhaustively analyze the toric symmetries of CP^3 and its toric blowups. Our motivation is to study toric symmetry as a computational technique in Gromov-Witten theory and Donaldson-Thomas theory. We identify all nontrivial toric symmetries. The induced nontrivial isomorphisms lift and provide new symmetries at the level of Gromov-Witten Theory and Donaldson-Thomas Theory. The polytopes of the toric varieties in question include the permutohedron, the cyclohedron, the associahedron, and in fact all graph associahedra, among others.

Exploring The Roles Of Nucleobase Desolvation And Shape Complementarity During The Misreplication Of O6-Methylguanine, Delia Chavarria, Andrea Ramos Serrano, Ichiro Hirao, Anthony J. Berdis Sep 2011

Exploring The Roles Of Nucleobase Desolvation And Shape Complementarity During The Misreplication Of O6-Methylguanine, Delia Chavarria, Andrea Ramos Serrano, Ichiro Hirao, Anthony J. Berdis

Chemistry Faculty Publications

O6-methylguanine is a miscoding DNA lesion arising from the alkylation of guanine. This report uses the bacteriophage T4 DNA polymerase as a model to probe the roles hydrogen-bonding interactions, shape/size, and nucleobase desolvation during the replication of this miscoding lesion. This was accomplished by using transient kinetic techniques to monitor the kinetic parameters for incorporating and extending natural and non-natural nucleotides. In general, the efficiency of nucleotide incorporation does not depend on the hydrogen-bonding potential of the incoming nucleotide. Instead, nucleobase hydrophobicity and shape complementarity appear to be the preeminent factors controlling nucleotide incorporation. In addition, shape complementarity plays a …

Modeling The Connectome Of A Simple Spinal Cord., R Borisyuk, Ak Al Azad, D Conte, A Roberts, Sr Soffe

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

In this paper we develop a computational model of the anatomy of a spinal cord. We address a long-standing ambition of neuroscience to understand the structure-function problem by modeling the complete spinal cord connectome map in the 2-day old hatchling Xenopus tadpole. Our approach to modeling neuronal connectivity is based on developmental processes of axon growth. A simple mathematical model of axon growth allows us to reconstruct a biologically realistic connectome of the tadpole spinal cord based on neurobiological data. In our model we distribute neuron cell bodies and dendrites on both sides of the body based on experimental measurements. …

Geophysical Explorations At Sylvester Manor, Kenneth L. Kvamme Sep 2011

Geophysical Explorations At Sylvester Manor, Kenneth L. Kvamme

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Geophysical surveys were undertaken at the Sylvester Manor Estate, on Shelter Island, New York, in the summer of 2000. This work helped identify and map components of the buried cultural landscape at this plantation where Dutch, English, Native Americans, and enslaved Africans labored in the second half of the 17th century and later. A second goal was to map features of historic gardens that are known to have existed, and explore the possibility of cultural features in a distant “West Peninsula” area. Ground-penetrating radar, magnetic gradiometry, and electrical resistance surveys were employed. The electrical resistance data, acquired at 25 cm …
