Lessons Learned As A Novice Researcher: A Pilot Study In Mathematics Education, Nicole L. Fonger Sep 2011

Lessons Learned As A Novice Researcher: A Pilot Study In Mathematics Education, Nicole L. Fonger

The Hilltop Review

The lessons we learn in life are often catalyzed by events or happenings that we experience and that subsequently change us in some way. Life as a graduate student is replete with diverse experiences that mold and shape one‘s outlook on teaching, learning, and disciplined inquiry. As a doctoral candidate, my role as a novice researcher is increasingly budding with growth and my responsibilities to design and conduct research have engendered some important lessons. Often confined to private or classroom conversations with graduate students and faculty members, the lessons I have learned as a novice researcher seem worth sharing to …

Modeling Of A Photonic Crystal Waveguide Modes With The Fdtd Method, Buddhi Rai Sep 2011

Modeling Of A Photonic Crystal Waveguide Modes With The Fdtd Method, Buddhi Rai

The Hilltop Review

The electromagnetic modes are investigated using a simple 1D implementation of the FDTD numerical algorithm to a model of 1D photonic crystal. The fields Ez and Hy are simulated along the x-axis, the propagation direction. Source implementation and the effects of various boundary conditions such as ABC, Mur on TF-SF fields are investigated. Of particular focus in this paper is, for example, on investigating the guided and/or radiation modes at a stop band frequency of the photonic crystal formed of linear and Kerr nonlinear media. Such structures exhibit interesting transmission and reflection properties that make them suitable for …

Quantitative And Qualitative Research Controversy In Public Administration: An Analysis Of Statistical Data Presented On United Kingdom People Category In The Cia World Factbook, Khandaker Nayeemul Islam

The Hilltop Review

Two traditions of social science research can be identified as ‘quantitative‘ and ‘qualitative‘ research, which are different from each other in style and technique. Supporters of these two traditions ―sometimes seem to be at war regarding the supremacy of their respective tradition in analyzing social phenomena (King, Keohane and Verba, 1994). In general, this war is quite visible in the field of social science and in public administration, which refers as federal, state and local government, as a discipline of social science. Transcending the boundaries of academia this debate has received considerable interest recently from people every corner of the …

The Myth Of Progress In Science: Dialectics, Distortion And Lysenkoism In The Soviet Union, Mark A. Ferguson Jr. Sep 2011

The Myth Of Progress In Science: Dialectics, Distortion And Lysenkoism In The Soviet Union, Mark A. Ferguson Jr.

The Hilltop Review

The scientific controversy surrounding Lysenkoism is both unparalleled and well known amongst historians and philosophers of science (Joravsky 1970, McMullin 1987, Pollock 2009, Wolfe 2010). Yet, while this may be true for scholars and students a generation ago, I argue that the controversy of Lysenkoism is not widely known today. Particularly in political science, this historical period and phenomenon in the Soviet Union remains irrelevant or at least, inconsequential to the scientific study of politics.

Supporting Problem Solving In Pbl, David Jonassen Sep 2011

Supporting Problem Solving In Pbl, David Jonassen

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Although the characteristics of PBL (problem focused, student centered, self-directed, etc.) are well known, the components of a problem-based learning environment (PBLE) and the cognitive scaffolds necessary to support learning to solve different kinds of problems with different learners is less clear. This paper identifies the different components of a PBLE, including a problem to solve, worked examples, case studies, analogues, prior experiences, alternative perspectives, and simulations. Additionally, different cognitive scaffolds necessary to help students interpret and use those components include analogical encoding, causal relationships, argumentations, questioning, modeling, and metacognitive regulation. Recommendations are provided for matching components and scaffolds with …

Integrating Technology And Problem-Based Learning: A Mixed Methods Study Of Two Teacher Professional Development Designs, Andrew Walker, Mimi Recker, M. Brooke Robertshaw, Jeffrey Osen, Heather Leary, Lei Ye, Linda Sellers

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

This article describes two consecutive enactments of technology-oriented teacher professional development designs, aimed at helping teachers find high-quality online learning resources and use them in designing effective problem-based learning (PBL) activities for their students. To align with current professional development prescriptions, in the first enactment, teachers learned PBL design skills concurrently with technology skills. Following aspects of design-based research, the professional development theory, participant feedback, and results from the first enactment informed the design of the second. In this second enactment, technology skills were separated and presented prior to learning about PBL. Results from a mixed-methods study of impact indicated …

Managing The Complexity Of Design Problems Through Studio-Based Learning, Katherine Cennamo, Carol Brandt, Brigitte Scott, Sarah Douglas, Margarita Mcgrath, Yolanda Reimer, Mitzi Vernon

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

The ill-structured nature of design problems makes them particularly challenging for problem-based learning. Studio-based learning (SBL), however, has much in common with problem-based learning and indeed has a long history of use in teaching students to solve design problems. The purpose of this ethnographic study of an industrial design class, an architecture class, and three human-computer-interaction classes was to develop a cross-disciplinary understanding of the goals and expectations for students in a SBL environment and the ways in which experienced facilitators assist students in solving complex design problems. The expectations that students are to iteratively generate and refine design solutions, …

Amplitude Analyses Of The Decays Chi_C1 -> Eta Pi+ Pi- And Chi_C1 -> Eta' Pi+ Pi-, Raymond Mountain, Marina Artuso, S. Blusk, T. Skwarnicki

Physics - All Scholarship

Using a data sample of 2.59 x 10^7 psi(2S) decays obtained with the CLEO-c detector, we perform amplitude analyses of the complementary decay chains chi_c1 -> eta pi+ pi- and chi_c1 -> eta' pi+ pi-. We find evidence for a P-wave eta' pi scattering amplitude, which, if interpreted as a resonance, would have exotic J^PC = 1^-+ and parameters consistent with the pi_1(1600) state reported in other production mechanisms. We also make the first observation of the decay a_0(980) -> eta' pi and measure the ratio of branching fractions B(a_0(980) -> eta' pi)/B(a_0(980) -> eta pi) = 0.064 +- 0.014 …

Linguistic Hooks: Overcoming Adverse Cognitive Stock Structures In Statutory Interpretation, Michael R. Smith Sep 2011

Linguistic Hooks: Overcoming Adverse Cognitive Stock Structures In Statutory Interpretation, Michael R. Smith

Faculty Articles

Many issues of statutory interpretation arise due to a cognitive collision between the facts of the case at hand and the mental stock structure implicated by a word or phrase in the applicable statute Consider for example a statute that regulates chairs For most people the stock structure for chair would be a mental image of an object with four legs and a backrest designed for one person to sit on Would this statute apply to benches How about stools Or couches Each of these words conjures up its own stock structure that is close to yet inconsistent with the …

Earth Sciences

Reactive halogens, and in particular bromine oxide (BrO), have frequently been observed in regions with large halide reservoirs, for example during bromine catalyzed coastal polar ozone depletion events. Much less is known about the presence and impact of reactive halogens in areas without obvious halide reservoirs, such as the polar ice sheets or continental snow.

We report the first LP-DOAS measurements of BrO at Summit research station in the center of the Greenland ice sheet at an altitude of 3200 m. BrO mixing ratios in May 2007 and June 2008 were typically between 1–3 pmol mol−1, with maxima …

Performance Analysis Of Solar Walls In Minnesota: Final Project Report, Patrick A. Tebbe, Saeed Moaveni, Louis Schwartzkopf

Mechanical and Civil Engineering Department Publications

A study of unglazed transpired solar collectors (referred to as solar walls for this report), has been undertaken. Several installations in the Twin Cities, MN region have been identified, researched, and studied. A combination of weather stations, data logging systems, and building energy management systems were used to collect experimental data on four buildings. Performance calculations were then performed for these buildings and compared with various performance/modeling tools.

Drosophila Insulin And Target Of Rapamycin (Tor) Pathways Regulate Gsk3 Beta Activity To Control Myc Stability And Determine Myc Expression In Vivo, Federica Parisi, Sara Riccardo, Margaret Daniel, Mahesh Saqcena, Nandini Kundu, Annalisa Pession, Daniela Grifoni, Hugo Stocker, Esteban Tabak, Paola Bellosta

Publications and Research

Background Genetic studies in Drosophila melanogaster reveal an important role for Myc in controlling growth. Similar studies have also shown how components of the insulin and target of rapamycin (TOR) pathways are key regulators of growth. Despite a few suggestions that Myc transcriptional activity lies downstream of these pathways, a molecular mechanism linking these signaling pathways to Myc has not been clearly described. Using biochemical and genetic approaches we tried to identify novel mechanisms that control Myc activity upon activation of insulin and TOR signaling pathways. Results Our biochemical studies show that insulin induces Myc protein accumulation in Drosophila S2 …

Application Of Baranyi Function To Model The Antibacterial Properties Of Solvent Extract From Irish York Cabbage Against Food Spoilage And Pathogenic Bacteria, Amit Jaiswal, Nissreen Abu-Ghannam, Shilpi Gupta, Sabrina Cox Sep 2011

Application Of Baranyi Function To Model The Antibacterial Properties Of Solvent Extract From Irish York Cabbage Against Food Spoilage And Pathogenic Bacteria, Amit Jaiswal, Nissreen Abu-Ghannam, Shilpi Gupta, Sabrina Cox

Articles

Cabbage is a rich source of a number of bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, glucosinolates and their breakdown products which may have antibacterial, antioxidant and anticancer properties. Outer green leaves of York cabbage were extracted with 60% methanol, ethanol or acetone. Antibacterial activities of vacuum dried crude extracts were estimated against a number of Gram-positive and Gram-negative food spoilage and food pathogenic bacteria. The crude extracts showed a broad spectrum of antibacterial activities but 60% methanol extract exhibited the highest antibacterial effect. Complete growth inhibition for Listeria monocytogenes was achieved with an extract concentration of 1.4%, whereas a two-fold concentration …

Reducing Sequencing Complexity In Dynamical Quantum Error Suppression By Walsh Modulation, David Hayes, Kaveh Khodjasteh, Lorenza Viola, Michael J. Biercuk Sep 2011

Reducing Sequencing Complexity In Dynamical Quantum Error Suppression By Walsh Modulation, David Hayes, Kaveh Khodjasteh, Lorenza Viola, Michael J. Biercuk

Dartmouth Scholarship

We study dynamical error suppression from the perspective of reducing sequencing complexity, with an eye toward facilitating the development of efficient semiautonomous quantum-coherent systems. To this end, we focus on digital sequences where all interpulse time periods are integer multiples of a minimum clock period and compatibility with digital classical control circuitry is intrinsic. We use so-called Walsh functions as a unifying mathematical framework; the Walsh functions are an orthonormal set of basis functions which may be associated directly with the control propagator for a digital modulation scheme. Using this insight, we characterize the suite of resulting Walsh dynamical decoupling …

Optical And Electrochemical Properties Of Multi-Layer Polyelectrolyte Thin Films Incorporating Spherical, Gold Colloid Nanomaterials, Tran T. Doan, Robert W. Day, Michael C. Leopold

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) films incorporating various types of spherical, gold nanomaterials (NMs) were investigated to assess the existence of electrochemical and/or optical signal enhancement effects directly attributable to embedded NMs and the relationship of these effects to film structure and composition. Specifically, electrostatically assembled films of cationic poly-L-lysine (PLL) and anionic poly(4-styrene sulfonate) (PSS) incorporating one of four types of spherical, gold colloid NMs were constructed on 3-(aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (3-APTMS)-modified glass substrates for optical studies or 11-mercaptoundecanoic (MUA)-modified gold electrodes for electrochemical studies. The NMs inserted into the PEM films include citrate-stabilized gold nanoparticles, thioctic acid-stabilized gold nanoparticles (TAS-NPs), MUA-modified monolayer …

Comparison Of Computational And Experimental Aerodynamics: Results For A Wmu Solar Car Model, Yang Yang, William W. Liou Sep 2011

Comparison Of Computational And Experimental Aerodynamics: Results For A Wmu Solar Car Model, Yang Yang, William W. Liou

The Hilltop Review

Three-dimensional numerical simulations using FLUENT [1] were performed to model the airflow over the Sunseeker, an award-winning solar car that was designed and built at Western Michigan University. Converged numerical solutions on three different grids are reported and compared with the available experimental data, which include the lift and the drag coefficients. Also reported are the results obtained by using the second-order upwinding discretization on one of the grids. The comparison shows that the computed lift coefficients agree well with the experimental data for all the three grids and the different orders of numerical methods, indicating that the pressure field …

Naturalized Epistemology Considered, Jason D. Gooch Sep 2011

Naturalized Epistemology Considered, Jason D. Gooch

The Hilltop Review

In order for a naturalized account of epistemology to be taken seriously by the philosophic community, it must address questions raised by the skeptic. Since W.V. Quine’s essay in 1969 entitled “Epistemology Naturalized,” the naturalized project has been marked both by bold claims that the traditional project has failed and that the problems a naturalized project potentially faces are not problems of concern. Instead of addressing these potential problems head on, attempts to advance the naturalized project since Quine have largely masked their language, consequently disguising the boldness of their separation. In an essay entitled “Against Naturalized Epistemology,” Laurence BonJour …
