Adaptive Control In Swarm Robotic Systems, Hanyi Dai Sep 2011

Adaptive Control In Swarm Robotic Systems, Hanyi Dai

The Hilltop Review

Inspired by the collective behavior observed in natural insects, swarm robotics is a new approach in designing control algorithms for a large group of robots performing a certain task. In such robotic systems, an individual robot with only limited capabilities in terms of sensing, computation, and communication can adapt its own behavior so that a desired collective behavior emerges from the local interactions among robots and between robots and the environment. Swarm robotics has been the focus of increased attention recently because of the beneficial features demonstrated in such systems, such as higher group efficiency, robustness against the failures of …

Privacy-Preserving Transactions On The Web, Sahil Behl, Leszek T. Lilien Sep 2011

Privacy-Preserving Transactions On The Web, Sahil Behl, Leszek T. Lilien

The Hilltop Review

There is a rapid growth in the number of applications using sensitive and personal information on the World Wide Web. This growth creates an urgent need to maintain the anonymity of the participants in many web transactions and to preserve the privacy of their sensitive data during data dissemination over the web. First, maintaining the anonymity of users on the World Wide Web is essential for a number of web applications. Anonymity cannot be assured by single interested individuals or an organization but requires participation from other web nodes owned by other entities. Second, preserving the privacy of sensitive data …

On Public Knowledge, Joanne Lau Sep 2011

On Public Knowledge, Joanne Lau

The Hilltop Review

In “Elusive Knowledge”, Lewis begins by saying that we know a lot of trite information about the ordinary world. I know what carrots are. I know how to drive a car. I know that when someone greets me and holds out their hand, they expect me to shake it and so on. However, when we talk in philosophical terms about knowledge, we have no reason to say that we really know anything. There seem to be two contexts of knowing something. Regarding the everyday, general type of knowledge, I know a lot. But when I put on my philosopher’s hat, …

Investigation Of Efficient Unified Threat Management In Enterprise Security, Ryan Lynn Sep 2011

Investigation Of Efficient Unified Threat Management In Enterprise Security, Ryan Lynn

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This thesis explores the problems that exist today with perimeter security in data communications specifically the disparate architecture that exists to mitigate risk. Currently there are many different components to the enterprise security perimeter that are not cohesive and do not collaborate well to form an efficient, scalable, operationally supportable gateway design. The thesis breaks down this problem by illustrating the shortcomings of current technologies. These illustrations are used in conjunction with published research and authored research to provide solid footing for the idea of a unified threat management or UTM model. In this model, threat prevention techniques are consolidated …

On The K-Theory And Homotopy Theory Of The Klein Bottle Group, Jens Harlander, Andrew Misseldine

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We construct infinitely many chain homotopically distinct algebraic 2-complexes for the Klein bottle group and give various topological applications. We compare our examples to other examples in the literature and address the question of geometric realizability.

The Effects Of Mental Training On Brain Computer Interface Performance With Distractions, John Larocco Sep 2011

The Effects Of Mental Training On Brain Computer Interface Performance With Distractions, John Larocco

Theses and Dissertations

The overall success of a brain computer interface (BCI) is largely dependent on the features used to make decisions. Noise in the electroencephalography (EEG) increases the difficulty of acquiring meaningful features. Previous literature suggests teaching subjects meditation and relaxation techniques may improve features relevant to BCI operation. The purpose of this study was to investigate performance on several cognitive protocols for both individuals who use meditation techniques and those who do not use these techniques. Both groups were given a motor imagery based BCI protocol, a P300 speller BCI, a verbal learning task, and an N-back test. No significant difference …

Atypical Clinical And Diagnostic Features In Ménétrier's Disease In A Child, Michael Chung, Jaime Pittenger, Deborah Flomenhoft, Jeffrey Bennett, Eun Young Lee, Harohalli Shashidhar Sep 2011

Atypical Clinical And Diagnostic Features In Ménétrier's Disease In A Child, Michael Chung, Jaime Pittenger, Deborah Flomenhoft, Jeffrey Bennett, Eun Young Lee, Harohalli Shashidhar

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

Ménétrier's disease is one of the rarest protein-losing gastropathies in childhood. It is characterized clinically by non-specific gastrointestinal symptoms and edema, biochemically by hypoalbuminemia, and pathologically by enlarged gastric folds. In adults, this disease can be devastating with significant morbidity and mortality. In childhood, it is a self-limiting, transient and benign illness. Its treatment is largely supportive with total parenteral nutrition (TPN) while oral intake is encouraged. Acute onset of vomiting in healthy school age children can be initially explained by acute viral gastroenteritis. However, persistent vomiting associated with hematemesis and severe abdominal pain should warrant further work-up. This case …
