Death And Dying In The Curriculum Of Public Schools: Is There A Place?, Ethel King-Mckenzie Oct 2011

Death And Dying In The Curriculum Of Public Schools: Is There A Place?, Ethel King-Mckenzie

Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets

Death and dying is not myth but a reality of life and living. Though some of us view death as a stranger and try to evade its existence as much as we can, death is inevitable. This paper proposes the inclusion of death and dying in the school curriculum and offers several ways of integrating death and dying in the curriculum for different grade levels. It argues that death has visited frequently on our school campuses and in national life over the past decades and there is always a sense of despair, panic and uncertainty about how to react to …

Speech Genres And Identity: The Place Of Adda In Bengali Cultural Discourse, Debarati Sen Oct 2011

Speech Genres And Identity: The Place Of Adda In Bengali Cultural Discourse, Debarati Sen

Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets

This paper explores the dialectic between speech genres and group identity. It argues that certain ideologies get associated with speech genres, like adda, which inextricably link them to particular groups and situations. Adda is a kind of informal social talk in Bengali, among friends and colleagues, but its content is always of intellectual significance, addressing issues such as local/global politics, art, literature, and music. Casual conversations and gossip are common in many societies, but the creative performance of this genre by Bengali elites made adda a marker of an urban middle-class identity, especially in response to British Imperialism. Currently in …

Some Issues That Confront Teachers: A Case Of The United States Of America And South Africa, Bongani D. Bantwini, Ethel King-Mckenzie Oct 2011

Some Issues That Confront Teachers: A Case Of The United States Of America And South Africa, Bongani D. Bantwini, Ethel King-Mckenzie

Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets

Teachers have become the major source of discussion, occasionally blamed for students’ poor performance, failure, and poor implementation of new reforms. This paper explores and discusses the recent issues with which teachers from the United States of America and South Africa are confronted, including teacher layoffs, abolishment of teacher tenure, evaluation of teachers by their students’ tests score, teacher lack of support, deteriorating school condition, and mixed messages over what teachers should do. In discussing these issues, the paper raises many questions and concerns and argues that too much of a pressure on teachers will not necessary brings the desired …

Teaching Asia In The American South: A Case Study Of An African American Teacher’S Journey, Guichun Zong Oct 2011

Teaching Asia In The American South: A Case Study Of An African American Teacher’S Journey, Guichun Zong

Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets

Policy makers and researchers in American teacher education have long called for increased numbers of minority teachers to address the cultural gap between teachers and students, particularly in urban schools. However, very little is known about what these teacher candidates bring to and what happens to them as they progress through their professional development programs. The central purpose of this case study is to gain insights on an African American teacher candidate’ perspectives on teaching about Asia in the era of globalization: its primary purpose, curriculum, and effective strategies and resources to engage students. It also explores factors that shape …

Warped Product Rigidity, Chenxu He, Peter Petersen, William Wylie Oct 2011

Warped Product Rigidity, Chenxu He, Peter Petersen, William Wylie

Mathematics - All Scholarship

In this paper we study the space of solutions to an overdetermined linear system involving the Hessian of functions. We show that if the solution space has dimension greater than one, then the underlying manifold has a very rigid warped product structure. This warped product structure will be used to study warped product Einstein structures in our paper "The space of virtual solutions to the warped product Einstein equation".

The Space Of Virtual Solutions To The Warped Product Einstein Equation, Chenxu He, Peter Petersen, William Wylie Oct 2011

The Space Of Virtual Solutions To The Warped Product Einstein Equation, Chenxu He, Peter Petersen, William Wylie

Mathematics - All Scholarship

In this paper we introduce a vector space of virtual warping functions that yield Einstein metrics over a fixed base. There is a natural quadratic form on this space and we study how this form interacts with the geometry. We use this structure along with the results in our earlier paper "Warped product rigidity" to show that essentially every warped product Einstein manifold admits a particularly nice warped product structure that we call basic. As applications we give a sharp characterization of when a homogeneous Einstein metric can be a warped product and also generalize a construction of Lauret showing …

Improving Multi-Label Classification By Avoiding Implicit Negativity With Incomplete Data, Derrall L. Heath Oct 2011

Improving Multi-Label Classification By Avoiding Implicit Negativity With Incomplete Data, Derrall L. Heath

Theses and Dissertations

Many real world problems require multi-label classification, in which each training instance is associated with a set of labels. There are many existing learning algorithms for multi-label classification; however, these algorithms assume implicit negativity, where missing labels in the training data are automatically assumed to be negative. Additionally, many of the existing algorithms do not handle incremental learning in which new labels could be encountered later in the learning process. A novel multi-label adaptation of the backpropagation algorithm is proposed that does not assume implicit negativity. In addition, this algorithm can, using a naive Bayesian approach, infer missing labels in …

Secondary History/Social Studies Teachers’ Self-Efficacy Regarding Geography Teaching, Yan Gao Oct 2011

Secondary History/Social Studies Teachers’ Self-Efficacy Regarding Geography Teaching, Yan Gao

Theses and Dissertations

Teacher education remains a significant issue affecting the quality of geography instruction in the United States. Teachers’ self-efficacy has been identified as a crucial factor for improving teacher education and promoting educational reform. This study intended to develop a better understanding of the relationships between teacher education programs and secondary history/social studies teachers’ self-efficacy regarding teaching geography, and other demographic factors that could be a possible influence on geography teachers’ self-efficacy. A quantitative research methodology was employed to measure geography teacher efficacy and to explore factors that influence geography teachers’ efficacy in order to identify ways in which preservice and …

Frequency Multiplication In Nanowires, Marius Ghita, Ed Godshalk, Gary Goncher, Raj Solanki Oct 2011

Frequency Multiplication In Nanowires, Marius Ghita, Ed Godshalk, Gary Goncher, Raj Solanki

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Frequency multiplication in silicon and ZnO nanowire based Schottky and p-n diodes has been demonstrated at fundamental frequencies of 70 MHz and 500 MHz. Our motivation for using nanowires contacted at their tips was to minimize the spreading resistance and boundary capacitance in order to produce higher cut-off frequencies and conversion efficiencies compared to planar diodes. The data presented here are limited to the lower GHz range by the frequency response of the experimental apparatus. However, by employing microwave waveguides and higher fundamental source frequencies, it should be possible to reach much higher output frequencies with nanowire-based diodes.

Quasi 3-Dimensional Electrical Resistivity Mapping Of Air-Filled Karst Conduits And Policy Implications, Charles W. Mccrackin Oct 2011

Quasi 3-Dimensional Electrical Resistivity Mapping Of Air-Filled Karst Conduits And Policy Implications, Charles W. Mccrackin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study assesses the capability and practical applications of quasi 3-Dimensional (3D) electrical resistivity surveying (ER) for mapping air-filled karst conduits. Vadose zone caves within the Brooksville Ridge of West Central Florida are relatively similar in architecture, with N-S elongation, and do not consist of an interconnected network of conduits. A high resolution quasi-3D ER survey was performed over two mapped cave systems on the Brooksville Ridge. The resultant survey verified the general effectiveness of quasi-3D ER in locating the two known near-surface cave features. Several other locations in the survey show similar or stronger resistivity anomalies trending in a …

Navigating The Challenges Of Helping Teachers Use Data To Inform Educational Decisions, Kelli Thomas, Douglas Huffman Oct 2011

Navigating The Challenges Of Helping Teachers Use Data To Inform Educational Decisions, Kelli Thomas, Douglas Huffman

Administrative Issues Journal

In this paper we present a model of collaborative evaluation that has been used to engage teachers in data-based decision making for improving teaching and learning in mathematics and science. We examine three external challenges that threaten the process of continuous school improvement; namely, making sense of data, policy changes, and curriculum changes. In addition, we describe how the collaborative evaluation model facilitated progress beyond these challenges.

Preparation And Characterization Of A Composite Of Gold Nanoparticles And Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes And Its Potential For Heterogeneous Catalysis, Anne Shanahan, James Sullivan, Mary Mcnamara, Hugh Byrne

Articles

A single-walled carbon nanotube-supported gold nanoparticle composite was prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning transmission electron microscopy/scanning electron microscopy/transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, atomic absorption spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption, Raman spectroscopy, and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The Au particles were found to be crystalline, with a well-defined and narrow particle-size distribution, centered around 7 nm. The activity and selectivity of the composite for solventless aerobic oxidation of a secondary alcohol were examined, and a conversion efficiency of 95% was obtained.
