Pure multiple ionization cross sections of Ne by B2+ projectiles have been measured in the energy range of 0.75 to 4.0 MeV and calculated using the continuum distorted wave-eikonal initial state approximation. the experiment and calculations show that the ionization cross sections by B2+, principally for the production of highly charged recoils, is strongly enhanced when compared to the bare projectile with the same charge state, He2+, at the same velocities. © 2011 American Physical Society.
Acurate Low-Mass Stellar Models Of Koi-126, Gregory A. Feiden, Brian Chaboyer, Aaron Dotter
Acurate Low-Mass Stellar Models Of Koi-126, Gregory A. Feiden, Brian Chaboyer, Aaron Dotter
Dartmouth Scholarship
The recent discovery of an eclipsing hierarchical triple system with two low-mass stars in a close orbit (KOI-126) by Carter et al. (2011) appeared to reinforce the evidence that theoretical stellar evolution models are not able to reproduce the observational mass-radius relation for low-mass stars. We present a set of stellar models for the three stars in the KOI-126 system that show excellent agreement with the observed radii. This agreement appears to be due to the equation of state implemented by our code. A significant dispersion in the observed mass-radius relation for fully convective stars is demonstrated; indicative of the …

Continuous Monitoring In The Cloud Environment, Victoria Nyffeler
Continuous Monitoring In The Cloud Environment, Victoria Nyffeler
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
The National Institute of Standards and Technology introduced a risk management framework that concludes with a process for continuous monitoring. Continuous monitoring is a way to gain near real-time insight into the security health of an information technology environment. The cloud environment is unique from other environments in the way that resources are virtualized and shared among many cloud tenants. This type of computing has been gaining popularity as a solution for organizations to purchase resources as an on-demand service in the same way that an organization purchases utilities today. In order to experience the benefits promised by the emergence …

Dissemination Of Geological Information In Avoiding Geotechnical Risks Associated With Tunnel Construction: Lessons Learned From Deep Voids In Marble In Lower Manhattan, New York City, Nazrul I. Khandaker, Stanley Schleifer, Masud Ahmed, Leah Scott
Publications and Research
Test boring associated with the recently accomplished City Water Tunnel # 3 in Manhattan, New York City revealed moderately to highly weathered marble with insoluble silicate residues composed mostly of phlogopite, chlorite, and tremolite. Apparent control on the weatherability of the marble was in response to original mineral constituents dominating this lithology. Encountered marble samples ranged between pure calcitic to mixed dolomitic/siliceous types. Fresh marble samples collected from adjacent boring locations revealed characteristic geochemical data: Lime (25-45%), Silica (4-7%), Alumina (1-3%), MgO (5-20%), and LOI (35-42%); compressive strength of unweathered marble varied between 2000-3000 Kg/cm2. Relict foliations with …

Exploiting The Power Law Distribution Properties Of Satellite Fire Redaiative Power Retrials: A Method To Estimate Fire Radiative Energy And Biomass Burned From Sparse Satellite Observations, S. S. Kumar, David P. Roy, L. Boschetti, R. Kremens
GSCE Faculty Publications
Instantaneous estimates of the power released by fire (fire radiative power, FRP) are available with satellite active fire detection products. The temporal integral of FRP provides an estimate of the fire radiative energy (FRE) that is related linearly to the amount of biomass burned needed by the atmospheric emissions modeling community. The FRE, however, is sensitive to satellite temporal and spatial FRP undersampling due to infrequent satellite overpasses, cloud and smoke obscuration, and failure to detect cool and/or small fires. Satellite FRPs derived over individual burned areas and fires have been observed to exhibit power law distributions. This property is …

The goal of this study was to identify areas of teacher performance that were lacking to the point that the teacher was nonrenewed. Individual school districts can gain insight into why teachers are failing and make adjustments to their training and teacher induction programs that will improve professional practice. The study found that teachers failed primarily in the area of classroom management. Of the 22 possible teaching skills in which teachers could be deficient, four of the top five causes for nonrenewal came within the category of classroom management (Creating an Environment of Respect and Rapport, Managing Student Behavior, Managing …

We present a Monte Carlo Renormalisation Group (MCRG) study of the SU(2) gauge theory with two Dirac fermions in the adjoint representation. Using the two-lattice matching technique we measure the running of the coupling and the anomalous mass dimension. We find slow running of the coupling, compatible with an infrared fixed point. Assuming this running is negligible we find a vanishing anomalous dimension, gamma=-0.03(13), however without this assumption our uncertainty in the running of the coupling leads to a much larger range of allowed values, -0.6 < gamma < 0.6. We discuss the systematic errors affecting the current analysis and possible improvements.

Parathyroid Hormone And Cell Signaling In Bone Remodeling, Christina Battista
Parathyroid Hormone And Cell Signaling In Bone Remodeling, Christina Battista
Theses
Many mathematical models relevant to osteoporosis have been developed and studied. Although osteoclasts and osteoblasts are the crucial variables in bone resorption and bone formation, PTH can cause changes in the ratio of these cells and therefore should be studied more closely. Some of the current models for osteoporosis will be analyzed in this thesis as well as amended to account for the phenomenon that occurs with various methods of PTH administration. By administering PTH in either pulsatile or continuous doses, we obtain very different results. When administered in a continuous fashion, the body experiences a net bone loss over …
Two Approximate Minkowski Sum Algorithms, Victor Milenkovic, Elisha P. Sacks
Two Approximate Minkowski Sum Algorithms, Victor Milenkovic, Elisha P. Sacks
Department of Computer Science Faculty Publications
We present two approximate Minkowski sum algorithms for planar regions bounded by line and circle segments. Both algorithms form a convolution curve, construct its arrangement, and use winding numbers to identify sum cells. The first uses the kinetic convolution and the second uses our monotonic convolution. The asymptotic running times of the exact algorithms are increased by kmlogm with m the number of segments in the convolution and with k the number of segment triples that are in cyclic vertical order due to approximate segment intersection. The approximate Minkowski sum is close to the exact sum of perturbation regions that …

Microarray-Based Cancer Prediction Using Single Genes., Xiaosheng Wang, Richard Simon
Microarray-Based Cancer Prediction Using Single Genes., Xiaosheng Wang, Richard Simon
Journal Articles: Genetics, Cell Biology & Anatomy
BACKGROUND: Although numerous methods of using microarray data analysis for cancer classification have been proposed, most utilize many genes to achieve accurate classification. This can hamper interpretability of the models and ease of translation to other assay platforms. We explored the use of single genes to construct classification models. We first identified the genes with the most powerful univariate class discrimination ability and then constructed simple classification rules for class prediction using the single genes.
RESULTS: We applied our model development algorithm to eleven cancer gene expression datasets and compared classification accuracy to that for standard methods including Diagonal Linear …

Context. The majority of magnetic chemically peculiar (mCP) stars exhibit periodic light, radio, spectroscopic and spectropolarimetric variations that can be adequately explained by the model of a rigidly rotating main-sequence star with persistent surface structures. CU Vir and V901 Ori belong among these few mCP stars whose rotation periods vary on timescales of decades.
Aims. We aim to study the stability of the periods in CU Vir and V901 Ori using all accessible observational data containing phase information.
Methods. We collected all available relevant archived observations supplemented with our new measurements of these stars and analysed the period variations of …
