Small And Large Time Stability Of The Time Taken For A Lévy Process To Cross Curved Boundaries, Philip S. Griffin, Ross A. Maller Oct 2011

Small And Large Time Stability Of The Time Taken For A Lévy Process To Cross Curved Boundaries, Philip S. Griffin, Ross A. Maller

Mathematics - All Scholarship

This paper is concerned with the small time behaviour of a Levy process X. In particular, we investigate the stabilities of the times, Tb(r) and T*b (r), at which X, started with X0 = 0, first leaves the space-time regions {(t, y) in R2 : y ≤ rtb, t ≥ 0} (one-sided exit), or {(t, y) in R2 :|y| ≤ rtb, t ≥ 0} (two-sided exit), 0 ≤ b < 1, as r ↓ 0. Thus essentially we determine whether or not these passage times behave like deterministic functions in the sense of different modes of convergence; specifically convergence in probability, almost surely and in Lp. In many instances these are seen to be equivalent to relative stability of the process X itself. The …

Three-Dimensional Polarization States Of Monochromatic Light Fields, R. M.A. Azzam Oct 2011

Three-Dimensional Polarization States Of Monochromatic Light Fields, R. M.A. Azzam

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The 3×1 generalized Jones vectors (GJVs) [ExEyEz]t (t indicates the transpose) that describe the linear, circular, and elliptical polarization states of an arbitrary three-dimensional (3-D) monochromatic light field are determined in terms of the geometrical parameters of the 3-D vibration of the time-harmonic electric field. In three dimensions, there are as many distinct linear polarization states as there are points on the surface of a hemisphere, and the number of distinct 3-D circular polarization states equals that of all two-dimensional (2-D) polarization states on the Poincaré sphere, of which only two are circular states. The subset of 3-D polarization …

Experimental Characterization Of Coherent Magnetization Transport In A One-Dimensional Spin System, Chandrasekhar Ramanathan, Paola Cappellaro, Lorenza Viola, David G. Cory Oct 2011

Experimental Characterization Of Coherent Magnetization Transport In A One-Dimensional Spin System, Chandrasekhar Ramanathan, Paola Cappellaro, Lorenza Viola, David G. Cory

Dartmouth Scholarship

We experimentally characterize the non-equilibrium, room-temperature magnetization dynamics of a spin chain evolving under an effective double-quantum (DQ) Hamiltonian. We show that the Liouville space operators corresponding to the magnetization and the two-spin correlations evolve 90 degrees out of phase with each other, and drive the transport dynamics. For a nearest-neighbor-coupled N-spin chain, the dynamics are found to be restricted to a Liouville operator space whose dimension scales only as N2, leading to a slow growth of multi-spin correlations. Even though long-range couplings are present in the real system, we find excellent agreement between the analytical predictions …

Investment Payback Calculator For Distributed Generation Sources, Md Rasheduzzaman, Elizabeth Stahlman, Badrul H. Chowdhury Oct 2011

Investment Payback Calculator For Distributed Generation Sources, Md Rasheduzzaman, Elizabeth Stahlman, Badrul H. Chowdhury

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The development of a distributed generation payback calculator that can be used for different types of energy technologies such as small wind turbines, fuel cells, microturbines, solar PV and other technologies is presented. the payback calculator takes several inputs such as technology costs, expected life of the project, capacity factor, system size, customer type, and several other relevant parameters. from these inputs, the calculator computes several different outputs including the total energy produced within a year, the rate of return, total expenses, total cash flow, and the discounted payback period in years. the calculator is embedded into a website available …

Compressed Sensing Based Analytical Modeling For Through-Silicon-Via Pairs, Tao Wang, Jingook Kim, Jun Fan, Yiyu Shi Oct 2011

Compressed Sensing Based Analytical Modeling For Through-Silicon-Via Pairs, Tao Wang, Jingook Kim, Jun Fan, Yiyu Shi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Through-Silicon-Vias (TSVs) are the critical enabling technique for three-dimensional integrated circuits (3D ICs). While there are a few existing works in literature to model the electrical performance of TSVs, they are either for fixed geometry or in lack of accuracy. in this paper, we use compressed sensing technique to model the electrical performance of TSV pairs. Experimental results indicate that with an exceptionally small number of samples, our model has a maximum relative error of 3.94% compared with full-wave simulations over a wide range of geometry parameters and frequencies. © 2011 IEEE.

Effects Of Sediment Mineralogy To High-Iron Content In The Groundwater Of Rrogozhina Aquifer (Western Albania), Arjan Beqiraj, Enkeleida Beqiraj Oct 2011

Effects Of Sediment Mineralogy To High-Iron Content In The Groundwater Of Rrogozhina Aquifer (Western Albania), Arjan Beqiraj, Enkeleida Beqiraj

Studia UBB Geologia

The groundwater of Rrogozhina aquifer (western Albania) is generally characterized by high iron contents. Its water-bearing medium consists of soft to hard sandstone and conglomerate with intercalations of impermeable clay layers. The groundwater of Rrogozhina aquifer, that extends over a surface of 2100 km2 in the pre-Adriatic depression of Albania, occurs under typically artesian conditions. The iron content in ground water ranges from 0.2% up to 2.5%, but most of them fall within the interval 0.5-1.0 %. In groundwater iron occurs as reduced divalent ferrous iron (Fe+2) which is conditioned by the lack of water exposure to …

Generic Phases Of Cross-Linked Active Gels: Relaxation, Oscillation And Contractility, Shiladitya Banerjee, Tanniemola B. Liverpool, M. C. Marchetti Oct 2011

Generic Phases Of Cross-Linked Active Gels: Relaxation, Oscillation And Contractility, Shiladitya Banerjee, Tanniemola B. Liverpool, M. C. Marchetti

Physics - All Scholarship

We study analytically and numerically a generic continuum model of an isotropic active solid with internal stresses generated by non-equilibrium `active' mechano-chemical reactions. Our analysis shows that the gel can be tuned through three classes of dynamical states by increasing motor activity: a constant unstrained state of homogeneous density, a state where the local density exhibits sustained oscillations, and a steady-state which is spontaneously contracted, with a uniform mean density.

An Empirical Analysis Of The Cascade Error Reconciliation Protocol For Quantum Key Distribution, Timothy I. Calver, Michael R. Grimaila, Jeffrey W. Humphries Oct 2011

An Empirical Analysis Of The Cascade Error Reconciliation Protocol For Quantum Key Distribution, Timothy I. Calver, Michael R. Grimaila, Jeffrey W. Humphries

Faculty Publications

Modern cryptography provides the means to securely communicate data between authorized entities by using mathematical transformations which require pre-shared cryptographic keys. The need to share key material with authorized entities in a secure, cost efficient and timely manner has driven efforts to develop new key distribution methods. A promising method is Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) which is considered to be “unconditionally secure” because it relies upon the immutable laws of quantum physics rather than computational complexity as the basis for its security. An important component of any QKD system is the error reconciliation protocol which is used to identify and …

Evaluation Of A Community Mental Health Center’S Assessment Clinic: Development Of A Novel Assessment Evaluation Tool, Cassidy C. Arnold Oct 2011

Evaluation Of A Community Mental Health Center’S Assessment Clinic: Development Of A Novel Assessment Evaluation Tool, Cassidy C. Arnold

Theses and Dissertations

High quality assessment services are the linchpin connecting youth with mental health problems to diagnosis-specific, evidence-based treatments. The effort to improve assessment services is in its early days and faces a number of substantial challenges. This study was an initial effort to address these challenges through the development of a standardized, multi-dimensional Assessment Instrument evaluation tool—the Strength of Measure (SoM)—based on operationally defined criteria supported by decades of psychometric research. The SoM and other criteria addressing assessment practices were piloted with data from 32 consecutive assessment reports from a community mental health center’s Assessment Clinic. Results indicate that none of …
