Application Of Correlation As A Measure Of Performance, O. Mohd. Rijal, N. Mohd Noor, Y.F. Chang Nov 2011

Application Of Correlation As A Measure Of Performance, O. Mohd. Rijal, N. Mohd Noor, Y.F. Chang

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Correlation generally shows the relationship between variables. A judicious use of this relationship may yield a measure of performance for a given algorithm. In this study the correlation measure Rp 2 derived from the Un replicated Linear Functional relationship (ULFR) model will be shown to be a useful measure of performance in selected procedure or algorithm for a particular image registration method, a medical treatment, a character recognition method, and a compression method. The main result of these numerical studies strongly suggests that Rp2 is potentially useful as a performance measure in a wide range of imaging problem.

Labour Market Consideration As Course Selection Criteria In A Malaysian University, T. Subramaniam, H. Idris, M.R. Mohd Ariff

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

This paper aims to identify factors that are considered by the first year undergraduate students from Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), University of Malaya in course selection process in two different stages namely pre-entry and post-entry. Findings from this study reveals that in pre-entry selection criteria, ‘teacher’ and ‘family’ factors appears to be more important. ‘Labour market consideration’ only appears to be the third important factor in this stage. These three factors collectively explains approximately 54 percent of the variation in pre-entry selection criteria. In postentry selection criteria, ‘peers influence’ , ‘orientation week’ and ‘limited choices’ factors emerged …

Profiles Of Teachers In Selected Curriculum Areas : Further Analyses Of The Staff In Australia’S Schools 2010 Survey, Paul R. Weldon, Glenn Rowley, Phillip Mckenzie

School and system improvement

This report was commissioned by DEEWR and uses data from the 2010 Staff in Australia’s Schools (SiAS) survey to analyse the profiles of the teachers teaching in five selected curriculum areas in primary schools and 12 areas in secondary schools and to compare the 2010 data with that obtained in the 2007 SiAS survey. The areas were selected to help inform policy initiatives as well as concerns about teacher shortages in those areas and other related workforce issues.

The Hard Work Of Improvement, Geoff N. Masters Nov 2011

The Hard Work Of Improvement, Geoff N. Masters

School and system improvement

A common strategy for promoting improved employee or organisational performance is to place a strong focus on organisational results. The perceived advantage of focusing on results is that it clarifies and concentrates effort on the main game: the key purpose of the organisation's work. It also provides a basis for evaluating employee performance. As part of their drive for improvement, organisations also sometimes attach incentives to results, either in the form of rewards or sanctions. There is growing evidence, however, that focusing on results alone is an ineffective improvement strategy in many contexts and often leads to unintended behaviours. There …

Distress Tolerance Moderates The Relationship Between Negative Affect Intensity With Borderline Personality Disorder Levels, Marina Bornovalova, Alexis Matusiewicz, Elizabeth Rojas Nov 2011

Distress Tolerance Moderates The Relationship Between Negative Affect Intensity With Borderline Personality Disorder Levels, Marina Bornovalova, Alexis Matusiewicz, Elizabeth Rojas

Psychology Faculty Publications

A number of studies have suggested that negative emotionality and negative affect intensity play key roles in the development and maintenance of borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, more recent research indicates that one's response to affective discomfort may be an even more important variable in the pathogenesis of BPD than either negative emotionality or negative affect intensity per se. As such, the current study aimed to empirically test the moderating role of 2 well-validated laboratory measures of the ability to tolerate psychological distress (distress tolerance) in the relationship of negative emotionality and negative affect intensity with BPD levels. Results provide …

Using cholesterol as starting material, a series of 6-substituted-3-aza-A-homo-3-oxycholestanes and 6-substituted-4-aza-A-homo-3-oxycholestanes were synthesized by the oxidation, reduction, oximation, Beckman rearrangement and condensation reaction. These synthesized compounds displayed a distinct cytotoxicity against MGC 7901, HeLa and SMMC 7404 cancer cells. Our results revealed that the structures of functional groups at position-6 on the steroidal ring are crucial for the IC50 value of antiproliferative activities of these compounds and the cytotoxic activity against MGC 7901 and SMMC 7404 cells was not significantly different between 4-N-lactams and 3-N-lactams when its 6-substituted group was a carbonyl or a hydroximino, but all 3-N-lactams showed a …

Effects Of Column Stiffness On Seismic Behavior Of Steel Plate Shear Walls, Xuhua Guo Nov 2011

Effects Of Column Stiffness On Seismic Behavior Of Steel Plate Shear Walls, Xuhua Guo

Master's Theses

Steel plate shear walls (SPSWs) are a lateral force resisting system consisting of thin infill steel plates surrounded by boundary frame members. The infill steel plates are allowed to buckle in shear and subsequently form diagonal tension field actions during earthquake events. Hysteretic energy dissipation of this system is primarily achieved through yielding of the infill plates. Conceptually, in a SPSW system with ideally rigid columns pinned to ground, the infill plates at different stories will yield simultaneously as a result of the lateral loads. However, when the columns become flexible, infill plate yielding may initially occur at one story …

A 3-D Lighting And Shadow Analysis Of The Jfk Zapruder Film (Frame 317), Hany Farid

Computer Science Technical Reports

Claims of a broader conspiracy behind U.S. President John F. Kennedy's assassination have persisted for the past nearly five decades. The Zapruder film is considered to be the most complete recording of JFK's assassination. Many have claimed that this 8mm film was manipulated to conceal evidence of a second shooter, which would invalidate the claim that a lone gunman, Lee Harvey Oswald, was responsible for JFK's assassination. Here we consider the viability of one specific claim of postproduction tampering in the Zapruder film.

Sensitivity Analysis In Semiparametric Likelihood Models, Xiaohong Chen, Elie Tamer, Alexander Torgovitsky Nov 2011

Sensitivity Analysis In Semiparametric Likelihood Models, Xiaohong Chen, Elie Tamer, Alexander Torgovitsky

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We provide methods for inference on a finite dimensional parameter of interest, θ in Re ^{ d _θ}, in a semiparametric probability model when an infinite dimensional nuisance parameter, g , is present. We depart from the semiparametric literature in that we do not require that the pair (θ, g ) is point identified and so we construct confidence regions for θ that are robust to non-point identification. This allows practitioners to examine the sensitivity of their estimates of θ to specification of g in a likelihood setup. To construct these confidence regions for θ, we invert a profiled sieve …

Greek Debt And American Debt: Graduation Speech At The University Of Athens Economics And Business School, John Geanakoplos

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This is the graduation speech I gave on receiving an honorary doctorate at the University of Athens Economics and Business School. I talk about my Greek family, about how I got interested in economics, and then how in the 1990s I came to think about default, collateral, and leverage as the central features of the financial/macro economy, despite their complete absence (even now) from any textbooks. Finally I suggest that the Greek debt problem, and on a bigger scale, the American debt problem, can only be cured when lenders are prodded to forgive. That would be better for the borrowers …

The Good, The Bad, And The Actively Verified, John Williamson Nov 2011

The Good, The Bad, And The Actively Verified, John Williamson

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

We believe that we can use active probing for compromise recovery. Our intent is to exploit the differences in behavior between compromised and uncompromised systems and use that information to identify those which are not behaving as expected. Those differences may indicate a deviation in either con figuration or implementation from what we expect on the network, either of which suggests that the misbehaving entity might not be trustworthy. In this work, we propose and build a case for a method for using altered behavior directly resulting from or introduced as a side-effect of the compromise of a network service …

We present a comprehensive study of the influence of the geomagnetic field on the energy estimation of extensive air showers with a zenith angle smaller than 60°, detected at the Pierre Auger Observatory. The geomagnetic field induces an azimuthal modulation of the estimated energy of cosmic rays up to the ∼ 2% level at large zenith angles. We present a method to account for this modulation of the reconstructed energy. We analyse the effect of the modulation on large scale anisotropy searches in the arrival direction distributions of cosmic rays. At a given energy, the geomagnetic effect is shown to …

Genome-wide genotyping of a cohort using pools rather than individual samples has long been proposed as a cost-saving alternative for performing genome-wide association (GWA) studies. However, successful disease gene mapping using pooled genotyping has thus far been limited to detecting common variants with large effect sizes, which tend not to exist for many complex common diseases or traits. Therefore, for DNA pooling to be a viable strategy for conducting GWA studies, it is important to determine whether commonly used genome-wide SNP array platforms such as the Affymetrix 6.0 array can reliably detect common variants of small effect sizes using pooled …

On Bipartite Restrictions Of Binary Matroids, James Oxley Nov 2011

On Bipartite Restrictions Of Binary Matroids, James Oxley

Faculty Publications

In a 1965 paper, Erdos remarked that a graph G has a bipartite subgraph that has at least half as many edges as G. The purpose of this note is to prove a matroid analogue of Erdos's original observation. It follows from this matroid result that every loopless binary matroid has a restriction that uses more than half of its elements and has no odd circuits; and, for 2≤k≤5, every bridgeless graph G has a subgraph that has a nowhere-zero k-flow and has more than k-1/k|E(G)| edges. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.

An Axiomatic Formulation Of The Montevideo Interpretation Of Quantum Mechanics, Rodolfo Gambini, Luis Pedro García-Pintos, Jorge Pullin Nov 2011

An Axiomatic Formulation Of The Montevideo Interpretation Of Quantum Mechanics, Rodolfo Gambini, Luis Pedro García-Pintos, Jorge Pullin

Faculty Publications

We make a first attempt to axiomatically formulate the Montevideo interpretation of quantum mechanics. In this interpretation environmental decoherence is supplemented with loss of coherence due to the use of realistic clocks to measure time to solve the measurement problem. The resulting formulation is framed entirely in terms of quantum objects. Unlike in ordinary quantum mechanics, classical time only plays the role of an unobservable parameter. The formulation eliminates any privileged role of the measurement process giving an objective definition of when an event occurs in a system. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.

Robustness, Power And Interpretability Of Pairwise Tests Of Discriminant Functions In Manova, Philip H. Ramsey, Patricia P. Ramsey, Priscila Hachimine, Nancy Andiloro

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Limiting follow-up hypotheses to be tested can reduce problems relating to the control of Type I and Type II errors in multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA). Such limitations can also improve the interpretability of results. The importance of sample size, shape of population distribution, within-group correlations and heterogeneity of variances are demonstrated. The protected greatest characteristic root (GCR) procedure is shown to work well for small, group size, N (≤ 10). The unprotected GCR is shown to work well for larger N.

A Comparison Of Factor Rotation Methods For Dichotomous Data, W. Holmes Finch Nov 2011

A Comparison Of Factor Rotation Methods For Dichotomous Data, W. Holmes Finch

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) is frequently used in the social sciences and is a common component in many validity studies. A core aspect of EFA is the determination of which observed indicator variables are associated with which latent factors through the use of factor loadings. Loadings are initially extracted using an algorithm, such as maximum likelihood or weighted least squares, and then transformed - or rotated - to make them more interpretable. There are a number of rotational techniques available to the researcher making use of EFA. Prior work has discussed the advantages of a number of these criteria from …

Indeterminacy Of Factor Score Estimates In Slightly Misspecified Confirmatory Factor Models, André Beauducel

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Two methods to calculate a measure for the quality of factor score estimates have been proposed. These methods were compared by means of a simulation study. The method based on a covariance matrix reproduced from a model leads to smaller effects of sampling error.

Climate Change And The Conservation Of Archaeological Sites: A Review Of Impacts Theory, Caithleen Daly Nov 2011

Climate Change And The Conservation Of Archaeological Sites: A Review Of Impacts Theory, Caithleen Daly

Articles

This article identifies the current state of knowledge in the literature regarding the possible impacts of future climatic change on archaeological sites and ensembles. Drawing on the literature review a matrix of potential impacts is collated to provide a simplified overview. This theoretical ‘menu’ is then tested by applying it to a vulnerability assessment of the World Heritage site of Skellig Michael in Ireland. The case study results reveal some knowledge gaps, particularly in regard to the impacts of climate change on buried archaeological remains.

Infinite-Randomness Criticality In A Randomly Layered Heisenberg Magnet, Fawaz Hrahsheh, Hatem Barghathi, Thomas Vojta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study the ferromagnetic phase transition in a randomly layered Heisenberg magnet using large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. Our results provide numerical evidence for the infinite-randomness scenario recently predicted within a strong-disorder renormalization-group approach. Specifically, we investigate the finite-size scaling behavior of the magnetic susceptibility, which is characterized by a nonuniversal power-law divergence in the Griffiths phase. We also study the perpendicular and parallel spin-wave stiffnesses in the Griffiths phase. In agreement with the theoretical predictions, the parallel stiffness is nonzero for all temperatures T < Tc. In contrast, the perpendicular stiffness remains zero in part of the ordered phase, giving …

Statistical Thermodynamics Of Material Transport In Non-Isothermal Mixtures, Semen Semenov, Martin Schimpf Nov 2011

Statistical Thermodynamics Of Material Transport In Non-Isothermal Mixtures, Semen Semenov, Martin Schimpf

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

This chapter outlines a theoretical framework for the microscopic approach to material transport in liquid mixtures, and applies that framework to binary one-phase systems. The material transport in this approach includes no hydrodynamic processes related to the macroscopic transfer of momenta. In analyzing the current state of thermodynamic theory, we indicate critically important refinements necessary to use non-equilibrium thermodynamics and statistical mechanics in the application to material transport in nonisothermal mixtures.
