Maximum Lifetime Coverage Preserving Scheduling Algorithms In Sensor Networks, Maggie X. Cheng, Xuan Gong Nov 2011

Maximum Lifetime Coverage Preserving Scheduling Algorithms In Sensor Networks, Maggie X. Cheng, Xuan Gong

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In wireless sensor networks, when each target is covered by multiple sensors, sensors can take turns to monitor the targets in order to extend the lifetime of the network. in this paper, we address how to improve network lifetime through optimal scheduling of sensor nodes. We present two algorithms to achieve the maximum lifetime while maintaining the required coverage: A linear programming-Based exponential-time exact solution, and an approximation algorithm. Numerical simulation results from the approximation algorithm are compared to the exact solution and show a high degree of accuracy and efficiency. © 2010 Springer Science Business Media, LLC.

Posets From Admissible Coxeter Sequences, Matthew Macauley, Henning S. Mortveit Nov 2011

Posets From Admissible Coxeter Sequences, Matthew Macauley, Henning S. Mortveit

Publications

We study the equivalence relation on the set of acyclic orientations of an undirected graph Γ generated by source-to-sink conversions. These conversions arise in the contexts of admissible sequences in Coxeter theory, quiver representations, and asynchronous graph dynamical systems. To each equivalence class we associate a poset, characterize combinatorial properties of these posets, and in turn, the admissible sequences. This allows us to construct an explicit bijection from the equivalence classes over Γ to those over Γ′ and Γ′′, the graphs obtained from Γ by edge deletion and edge contraction of a fixed cycle-edge, respectively. This bijection yields quick and …

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Various quaternary CuInxGa1−xS2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) chalcopyrite nanoparticles have been prepared from molecular single-source precursors via microwave decomposition. We were able to control the nanoparticle size, phase, stoichiometry, and solubility. Depending on the choice of surface modifiers used, we were able to tune the solubility of the resulting nanoparticles. This method has been used to generate up to 5 g of nanoparticles and up to 150 g from multiple batch reactions with excellent reproducibility. Data from UV-Vis, photoluminescence, X-ray diffraction, TEM, DSC/TGA-MS, and ICP-OES analyses have shown high reproducibility in nanoparticle size, …

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

Recent counter-helicity spheromak merging experiments in the Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment (SSX) have produced a novel compact torus (CT) with unusual features. These include a persistent antisymmetric toroidal magnetic field profile and a slow, nonlinear emergence of the n = 1 tilt mode. Experimental measurements are inconclusive as to whether this unique CT is a fully merged field-reversed configuration (FRC) with strong toroidal field or a partially merged "doublet CT" configuration with both spheromak- and FRC-like characteristics. In this paper, the SSX merging process is studied in detail using three-dimensional resistive MHD simulations from the Hybrid Magnetohydrodynamics (HYM) code. These simulations …

Chemistry Faculty Publications

We report that the p-xylylenediammonium ion (11) acts as a template in the cucurbit[n]uril forming reaction that biases the reaction toward the production of methylene bridged glycoluril hexamer (6C) and bis-nor-seco-CB [10]. Hexamer 6C is readily available on the gram scale by a one step synthetic procedure that avoids chromatography. Hexamer 6C undergoes macrocylization. with (substituted) phthalaldehydes 12,14,.15, and 18-in 9 M H2SO4 or concd HCl at room temperature to deliver monofunctionalized CB[6] derivatives 13,16,17, and 19 that are poised for further functionalization reactions: The kinetics of the macrocyclization reaction between hexamer and formaldehyde or phthalaldehyde depends on the presence …

Custodes Invicem Custodiunt: Commitment Through Competition, Madhav S. Aney, Giovanni Ko Nov 2011

Custodes Invicem Custodiunt: Commitment Through Competition, Madhav S. Aney, Giovanni Ko

Research Collection School Of Economics

How can specialists in violence, such as the military or the police, commit not to expropriate from producers? In this paper we propose competition between these agents as one of the mechanisms that can deter predation. In our model, even if specialists in violence could expropriate all output costlessly, it is attractive to protect producers from predators. This is because there is a marginal defensive advantage and consequently defense is an effective way to potentially eliminate other specialists in violence, reducing competition and leading to higher future payoffs. Hence, producers can offer transfers to specialists in violence that make defense …

Towards Trajectory-Based Experience Sharing In A City, Byoungjip Kim, Youngki Lee, Sangjeong Lee, Yunseok Rhee, Junehwa Song

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

As location-aware mobile devices such as smartphones have now become prevalent, people are able to easily record their trajectories in daily lives. Such personal trajectories are a very promising means to share their daily life experiences, since important contextual information such as significant locations and activities can be extracted from the raw trajectories. In this paper, we propose MetroScope, a trajectory-based real-time and on-the-go experience sharing system in a metropolitan city. MetroScope allows people to share their daily life experiences through trajectories, and enables them to refer to other people's diverse and interesting experiences in a city. Eventually, MetroScope aims …

Unsupervised Multiple Kernel Learning, Jinfeng Zhuang, Jialei Wang, Steven C. H. Hoi, Xiangyang Lan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Traditional multiple kernel learning (MKL) algorithms are essentially supervised learning in the sense that the kernel learning task requires the class labels of training data. However, class labels may not always be available prior to the kernel learning task in some real world scenarios, e.g., an early preprocessing step of a classification task or an unsupervised learning task such as dimension reduction. In this paper, we investigate a problem of Unsupervised Multiple Kernel Learning (UMKL), which does not require class labels of training data as needed in a conventional multiple kernel learning task. Since a kernel essentially defines pairwise similarity …

Consistent Community Identification In Complex Networks, Haewoon Kwak, Young-Ho Eom, Yoonchan Choi, Hawoong Jeong Nov 2011

Consistent Community Identification In Complex Networks, Haewoon Kwak, Young-Ho Eom, Yoonchan Choi, Hawoong Jeong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We have found that known community identification algorithms produce inconsistent communities when the node ordering changes at input. We use the pairwise membership probability and consistency to quantify the level of consistency across multiple runs of an algorithm. Based on these two metrics, we address the consistency problem without compromising the modularity. The key insight of the algorithm is to use pairwise membership probabilities as link weights. It offers a new tool in the study of community structures and their evolutions.

Beyond Search: Event-Driven Summarization For Web Videos, Richard Hong, Jinhui Tang, Hung-Khoon Tan, Chong-Wah Ngo, Shuicheng Yan, Tat-Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The explosive growth of Web videos brings out the challenge of how to efficiently browse hundreds or even thousands of videos at a glance. Given an event-driven query, social media Web sites usually return a large number of videos that are diverse and noisy in a ranking list. Exploring such results will be time-consuming and thus degrades user experience. This article presents a novel scheme that is able to summarize the content of video search results by mining and threading "key" shots, such that users can get an overview of main content of these videos at a glance. The proposed …

Field Ecology Patterns Of High Latitude Coral Communities, Kristi A. Foster Nov 2011

Field Ecology Patterns Of High Latitude Coral Communities, Kristi A. Foster

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Some climate models predict that, within the next 30-50 years, sea surface temperatures (SSTs) will frequently exceed the current thermal tolerance of corals (Fitt et al. 2001; Hughes et al. 2003; Hoegh-Guldberg et al. 2007). A potential consequence is that mass coral bleaching may take place (i) during warm El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events which are predicted to occur in some regions more frequently than the current 3-7 year periodicity (Hoegh-Guldberg 1999; Sheppard 2003) or (ii) perhaps as often as annually or biannually if corals and their symbionts are unable to acclimate to the higher SSTs (Donner et al. 2005, …

The Relationship Between Vmt And Economic Activity, B. Starr Mcmullen, Nathan Eckstein Nov 2011

The Relationship Between Vmt And Economic Activity, B. Starr Mcmullen, Nathan Eckstein

TREC Final Reports

Vehicle miles traveled (VMT) in the U.S. have exhibited an upward trend over time similar to that observed for gross domestic product (GDP) and personal income (PI). While conventional wisdom suggests that economic growth leads to more driving and thus higher VMT, it is theoretically possible that the causation could also be the other way around. If causation is from VMT to GDP, then legislation such as the Federal Surface Transportation Policy and Planning Act of 2009’s directive to annually reduce national per capita VMT could potentially have an adverse impact on overall economic activity.

This study uses times series …

Earth ’s climate changes. It always has and always will. However, an extensive body of scientific evidence indicates that human activities are now a significant force driving change in the Earth’s climate system. This report describes how the climate of the Piscataqua/Great Bay region of coastal New Hampshire in the United States has changed over the past century and how the future climate of the region will be affected by human activities that are warming the planet.

Overall, the region has been getting warmer and wetter over the last century, and the rate of change has increased over the last …

Aspects Of Fatigue Failure Mechanisms In Polymer Fuel Cell Membranes, Ahmet Kusoglu, Michael H. Santare, Anette M. Karlsson Nov 2011

Aspects Of Fatigue Failure Mechanisms In Polymer Fuel Cell Membranes, Ahmet Kusoglu, Michael H. Santare, Anette M. Karlsson

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The swelling-driven fatigue behavior of polymer fuel cell membranes during relative humidity (RH) cycling is investigated. In particular, swelling-induced membrane stresses are obtained from a numerical model simulating fuel cell RH cycle tests, and compared to the lifetimes obtained experimentally from tests conducted in the absence of electrochemical effects. A strong correlation between the lifetimes of the membranes in the actual tests and model results is obtained. In general, higher RH (or swelling) amplitude results in larger stress amplitudes and shorter lifetime, that is, fewer cycles to failure. Tensile stresses are needed for forming local cavities in the membrane, which …

Re-Appraising The Appraisers: Expanding Liability To Buyers And Borrowers In The Story Of The 2008 Financing Industry Crisis, Shelby D. Green Nov 2011

Re-Appraising The Appraisers: Expanding Liability To Buyers And Borrowers In The Story Of The 2008 Financing Industry Crisis, Shelby D. Green

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

On the surface, suing in negligence seems the most promising avenue for recovery against appraisers, because liability depends on an examination of defendant's conduct alone and does not require an examination or defendant's mental state to show intent or agreement. But historically insuperable hurdles have operated to prevent recovery under this seemingly simple cause of action. One hurdle is lack of privity. The appraiser's legal relationship is with the hiring party--the lender--to assess the risks of the loan transaction and not with the purchaser, who may rely on the appraisal in making the decision to purchase. Because of the lack …

A Variable Duty Cycle Maximum Power Point Tracking Algorithm For Wind Energy Conversion Systems., George Joseph 1988- Nov 2011

A Variable Duty Cycle Maximum Power Point Tracking Algorithm For Wind Energy Conversion Systems., George Joseph 1988-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis proposes a new Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithm employed in Wind Energy Conversion Systems (WECS). One of the major issues discussed in the literature concerning HCS is its inefficiency in detecting the peak power when there is a change in wind •speed. In addition, the HCS produces oscillations in delivered power once this peak is detected. A modified HCS algorithm is proposed in this thesis to overcome these limitations. This algorithm employs a variable duty cycle to reduce the oscillations in delivered power once the peak power is detected. The performance of the proposed algorithm was evaluated …

This paper initiates a forensic analysis of the causes of levee failures by analyzing and extracting information from a sequence of elevation data. This is a crucial step in bettering the design and construction of levees and dams. (Fully diagnosing failures usually requires knowledge beyond the geometry of the levee, such as weather conditions and material properties). We use results from computer simulations of levee overtopping for training data. The simulations use smoothed particle hydrodynamics coupled with a well-known erodibility model. Using the sequential nature of our data, we extract important channel networks that form as the soil is scoured …

Developing Business Acumen In Chinese Business School Graduates, Rajaram Veliyath, B. Stivers, T. Joyce, J. Hair

Faculty Articles

This study assessed the importance of knowledge, skills, abilities (i.e., KSAs) and competencies for managerial success in China’s market economy. Business students at a major Chinese university were surveyed over a five year period, initially in 2001 and later in 2006, five years after China’s entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO). Using Partial Least Squares (PLS), the explained variances in business acumen and social motivation skills were higher after China’s WTO entry. The results were reversed for communication skills. The results confirmed the predictive relevance of entrepreneurial behavior and adaptability in the model. Overall, the results suggest an enhanced …

Stress Modulation On The San Andreas Fault By Interseismic Fault System Interactions, John P. Loveless, Brendan J. Meade Nov 2011

Stress Modulation On The San Andreas Fault By Interseismic Fault System Interactions, John P. Loveless, Brendan J. Meade

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

During the interseismic phase of the earthquake cycle, between large earthquakes, stress on faults evolves in response to elastic strain accumulation driven by tectonic plate motions. Because earthquake cycle processes induce non-local stress changes, the interseismic stress accumulation rate on one fault is influenced by the behavior of all nearby faults. Using a geodetically constrained block model, we show that the total interseismic elastic strain field generated by fault interactions within Southern California may increase stressing rates on the Mojave and San Bernardino sections of the San Andreas fault within the Big Bend region by as much as 38% relative …

This article reports on the recent implementation and current deployment of accounting information systems in Libyan commercial banks. A case study approach is adopted that moves from an initial screening of the 14 main Libyan banks to a final in-depth study of just three banks. Business process modeling and systems profiling are used to assess the status of the banks in terms of systems use, process change and information systems strategy development. Libyan banks are well advanced in their installation of modern packaged software but could be used to greater effect to optimize business processes and improve efficiencies. Training and …

Consistency In Statistical Moments As A Test For Bubble Cloud Clustering, Thomas C. Weber, Anthony P. Lyons, David L. Bradley Nov 2011

Consistency In Statistical Moments As A Test For Bubble Cloud Clustering, Thomas C. Weber, Anthony P. Lyons, David L. Bradley

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Frequency dependent measurements of attenuation and/or sound speed through clouds of gas bubbles in liquids are often inverted to find the bubble size distribution and the void fraction of gas. The inversions are often done using an effective medium theory as a forward model under the assumption that the bubble positions are Poisson distributed (i.e., statistically independent). Under circumstances in which single scattering does not adequately describe the pressure field, the assumption of independence in position can yield large errors when clustering is present, leading to errors in the inverted bubble size distribution. It is difficult, however, to determine the …
