Propositional Quantification, Ryan Christensen Jan 2011

Propositional Quantification, Ryan Christensen

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Ramsey deWned truth in the following way: xz is true if and only if 'pzz(xz = [zpz] & pz). This deWnition is ill-formed in standard Wrst-order logic, so it is normally interpreted using substitutional or some kind of higher-order quanti-Wer. I argue that these quantiWers fail to provide an adequate reading of the deWnition, but that, given certain adjustments, standard objectual quantiWcation does provide an adequate reading.

Essay: Weighing The Potential Of Citizen Redistricting, Justin Levitt Jan 2011

Essay: Weighing The Potential Of Citizen Redistricting, Justin Levitt

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

As they do every ten years, this year state legislatures across the country are redrawing legislative district lines to reflect population shifts and ensure equal representation for each district. In 2010, California voters passed a proposition granting the California Citizens Redistricting Commission control over the drawing of congressional lines. This Symposium Essay examines the potential for redistricting by an independent group of citizens such as the Citizens Redistricting Commission. First, it explores the nature of the redistricting process, a process often explained as fundamentally political, and argues, instead, that the process is both political and pre-political. This Essay then examines …

A Focus On Technological Literacy In Higher Education, John M. Ritz Jan 2011

A Focus On Technological Literacy In Higher Education, John M. Ritz

STEMPS Faculty Publications

[First Paragraph] Technological literacy continues to be an important construct for learners in all societies.Quite often it is a knowledge area not required of university students unless they are engineering or technology majors. If the mission of design and technology education is literacy for all, this same mission should apply at the university level. An analysis was made of 256 students to determine their attitudes of knowledge gained from a general studies technological literacy course. The course was offered at the 100 level and was designed to expose students to various technologies so they would have a better foundation for …

Kernel-Based Interior-Point Methods For Cartesian P*(Κ)-Linear Complementarity Problems Over Symmetric Cones, Goran Lesaja Jan 2011

Kernel-Based Interior-Point Methods For Cartesian P*(Κ)-Linear Complementarity Problems Over Symmetric Cones, Goran Lesaja

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

We present an interior point method for Cartesian P*(k)-Linear Complementarity Problems over Symmetric Cones (SCLCPs). The Cartesian P*(k)-SCLCPs have been recently introduced as the generalization of the more commonly known and more widely used monotone SCLCPs. The IPM is based on the barrier functions that are defined by a large class of univariate functions called eligible kernel function which have recently been successfully used to design new IPMs for various optimization problems. Eligible barrier (kernel) functions are used in calculating the Nesterov-Todd search directions and the default step-size which leads to a very good complexity results for the method. For …

Research Summary: Assessment, Robert Michael Capraro, Mary F. Roe, Micki M. Caskey, David Strahan, Penny A. Bishop, Christopher C. Weiss

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications and Presentations

Assessment is important for middle level teachers and their students. In fact, the National Middle School Association (NMSA) highlighted curriculum, instruction, and assessment in This We Believe: Keys to Educating Young Adolescents (NMSA, 2010). The intention of this summary is to establish assessment’s rightful position as one priority for middle grade teachers and their students. When used wisely and well, teachers obtain information about their students’ strengths and needs, and their students remain informed about their achievements. To begin, educators need an operational definition of assessment. Based on the work of many scholars (e.g., Delclos, Vye, Burns, Bransford, & Hasselbring, …

Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis Of Columns, Rajkiran Muppavarapu Jan 2011

Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis Of Columns, Rajkiran Muppavarapu

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

In many engineering applications structural components are considered to be beams or columns subjected to a range of external loads such as dead weight, wind, temperature changes etc.In this work a mathematical model has been developed for a sports lighting tower considering it to be a cantilever beam with large deformation. The concept of non-linear P-Delta analysis is applied to the column. Using this model, a tower analysis tool was developed in MATLAB. Using this tool various design alternatives can be examined to evaluate their suitability to a particular task.A number of example problems from the available literature were solved …

Continued Fractions Sums And Products, Erik Rodgers Jan 2011

Continued Fractions Sums And Products, Erik Rodgers

Honors Capstones

The focus of this project is to study the mathematical relationship of the continued fraction sum and the continuedfraction product. Any real number can be written as a continued fraction, so the addition and multiplication of any two continued fractions is the same as the real numbers they represent. However, the continued fraction sum and continued fraction product each result in another continued fraction. The problem is the determining the relationship that this new continued fraction has with the original two. This will be achieved by observing the characteristics ofthe 3D graphs contained within the unit cube. This topic is …

Study Of The Response Of The Atlas Tile Calorimeter To Muons Produced In Sqrt(S) = 7 Tev Proton-Proton Collisions At The Lhc, Pierce Ben Weatherly Jan 2011

Study Of The Response Of The Atlas Tile Calorimeter To Muons Produced In Sqrt(S) = 7 Tev Proton-Proton Collisions At The Lhc, Pierce Ben Weatherly

Physics Theses - Archive

The purpose of this study is to verify the inter-calibration of the cells and uniformity of the Tile Calorimeter (TileCal) detector in the ATLAS experiment at CERN. The response using muons produced in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)= 7 TeV is identified. Muons are efficient calibration tools because they are minimum ionizing particles that deposit nearly constant energy in the calorimeter for a wide range of particle energies. In this study, the tracks of the muons are extrapolated through the calorimeter, and their path lengths through TileCal cells are calculated. The energy, path length, and dE/dx response of the cells are …

Investigations In The Impact Of Visual Cognition And Spatial Ability Of Student Comprehension Of Physics And Space Science, Ximena Clara Cuicatl Cid Jan 2011

Investigations In The Impact Of Visual Cognition And Spatial Ability Of Student Comprehension Of Physics And Space Science, Ximena Clara Cuicatl Cid

Physics Dissertations - Archive

Physics and Space Science examine topics that are highly spatial in nature. Students are required to visualize a system, manipulate that system, and then solve a given problem. Doing all of this, simultaneously, can lead to a cognitive overload where the student is unable to correctly solve the problem. Some difficulties may be rooted in conceptual difficulties, whereas other difficulties may arise from issues with spatial intelligence and visual cognition. In some cases, students might have created an incorrect mental image of the problem to begin with, and it's this misconception, not the lack of content knowledge, that has caused …

Study Of Jet And Missing Transverse Energy Performance In Dijet Events With Atlas Data, Sushmita Sahu Jan 2011

Study Of Jet And Missing Transverse Energy Performance In Dijet Events With Atlas Data, Sushmita Sahu

Physics Theses - Archive

The Large Hadron Collider(LHC) is the world's largest particle collider at CERN, Geneva, operating at a center of mass energy of 7 TeV . The Toroidal LHC Apparatus (ATLAS)is one of two general purpose detectors at the LHC. It is responsible for measuring particles produced in proton-proton collisions and to search for new particles. The High Energy Physics group at UTA has been involved with designing, construction and commissioning of the ATLAS Tile Calorimeter, one of the sub-detectors of ATLAS. One of the components of Tile Cal, the Intermediate Tile Calorimeter (ITC) was constructed at UTA. UTA has been actively …
