Discrete Beam Acceleration In Uniform Waveguide Arrays, Ramy El-Ganainy, Konstantinos G. Makris, Mohammad Ali Miri, Demetrios N. Christodoulides, Zhigang Chen Jan 2011

Discrete Beam Acceleration In Uniform Waveguide Arrays, Ramy El-Ganainy, Konstantinos G. Makris, Mohammad Ali Miri, Demetrios N. Christodoulides, Zhigang Chen

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Within the framework of the tight-binding model we demonstrate that Wannier-Stark states can freely accelerate in uniform optical lattices. As opposed to accelerating Airy wave packets in free space, our analysis reveals that in this case the beam main intensity features self-bend along two opposite hyperbolic trajectories. Two-dimensional geometries are also considered and an asymptotic connection between these Wannier-Stark ladders and Airy profiles is presented.

Unified Description Of The Dc Conductivity Of Monolayer And Bilayer Graphene At Finite Densities Based On Resonant Scatterers, Aires Ferreira, J. Viana-Gomes, Johan Nilsson, E. R. Mucciolo, N. M. R. Peres, A. H. Castro Neto

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

We show that a coherent picture of the dc conductivity of monolayer and bilayer graphene at finite electronic densities emerges upon considering that strong short-range potentials are the main source of scattering in these two systems. The origin of the strong short-range potentials may lie in adsorbed hydrocarbons at the surface of graphene. The equivalence among results based on the partial-wave description of scattering, the Lippmann-Schwinger equation, and the T-matrix approach is established. Scattering due to resonant impurities close to the neutrality point is investigated via a numerical computation of the Kubo formula using a kernel polynomial method. We find …

A Coupled Remote Sensing And The Surface Energy Balance With Topography Algorithm (Sebta) To Estimate Actual Evapotranspiration Over Heterogeneous Terrain, Z. Q. Gao, C. S. Liu, W. Gao, N -B. Chang

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Evapotranspiration (ET) may be used as an ecological indicator to address the ecosystem complexity. The accurate measurement of ET is of great significance for studying environmental sustainability, global climate changes, and biodiversity. Remote sensing technologies are capable of monitoring both energy and water fluxes on the surface of the Earth. With this advancement, existing models, such as SEBAL, S_SEBI and SEBS, enable us to estimate the regional ET with limited temporal and spatial coverage in the study areas. This paper extends the existing modeling efforts with the inclusion of new components for ET estimation at different temporal and spatial scales …

Adaptively Refined Hybrid Fdm-Rbf Meshless Scheme With Applications To Laminar And Turbulent Viscous Fluid Flows, S. Gerace, K. Erhart, E. Divo, A. Kassab

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

The focus of this work is to demonstrate a novel approach to true CFD automation based on an adaptive Cartesian point distribution process coupled with a Mesh less flow solution algorithm. As Mesh less method solutions require only an underlying nodal distribution, this approach works well even for complex flow geometries with non-aligned domain boundaries. Through the addition of a so-called shadow layer of body-fitted nodes, application of boundary conditions is simplified considerably, eliminating the stair-casing issues of typical Cartesian-based techniques. This paper describes the approach taken to automatically generate the Mesh less nodal distribution, along with the details of …

Retention Time Variability As A Mechanism For Animal Mediated Long-Distance Dispersal, Vishwesha Guttal, Frederic Bartumeus, Gregg Hartvigsen, Andrew L. Nevai Jan 2011

Retention Time Variability As A Mechanism For Animal Mediated Long-Distance Dispersal, Vishwesha Guttal, Frederic Bartumeus, Gregg Hartvigsen, Andrew L. Nevai

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Long-distance dispersal (LDD) events, although rare for most plant species, can strongly influence population and community dynamics. Animals function as a key biotic vector of seeds and thus, a mechanistic and quantitative understanding of how individual animal behaviors scale to dispersal patterns at different spatial scales is a question of critical importance from both basic and applied perspectives. Using a diffusion-theory based analytical approach for a wide range of animal movement and seed transportation patterns, we show that the scale (a measure of local dispersal) of the seed dispersal kernel increases with the organisms' rate of movement and mean seed …

Front Solutions For Bistable Differential-Difference Equations With Inhomogeneous Diffusion, A. R. Humphries, Brian E. Moore, Erik S. Van Vleck Jan 2011

Front Solutions For Bistable Differential-Difference Equations With Inhomogeneous Diffusion, A. R. Humphries, Brian E. Moore, Erik S. Van Vleck

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

We consider a bistable differential-difference equation with inhomogeneous diffusion. Employing a piecewise linear nonlinearity, often referred to as McKean's caricature of the cubic, we construct front solutions which correspond, in the case of homogeneous diffusion, to monotone traveling front solutions or, in the case of propagation failure, to stationary front solutions. A general form for these fronts is given for essentially arbitrary inhomogeneous discrete diffusion, and conditions are given for the existence of solutions to the original discrete Nagumo equation. The specific case of one defect is considered in depth, giving a complete understanding of propagation failure and a grasp …

A Facile Nanoparticle Immunoassay For Cancer Biomarker Discovery, Qun Huo, Jimmie Colon, Adam Cordero, Jelena Bogdanovic, Cheryl H. Baker, Steven Goodison, Marianna Y. Pensky

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Background: Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) scatter light intensely at or near their surface plasmon wavelength region. Using AuNPs coupled with dynamic light scattering (DLS) detection, we developed a facile nanoparticle immunoassay for serum protein biomarker detection and analysis. A serum sample was first mixed with a citrate-protected AuNP solution. Proteins from the serum were adsorbed to the AuNPs to form a protein corona on the nanoparticle surface. An antibody solution was then added to the assay solution to analyze the target proteins of interest that are present in the protein corona. The protein corona formation and the subsequent binding of antibody …

Rogue Waves And Downshifting In The Presence Of Damping, A. Islas, C. M. Schober Jan 2011

Rogue Waves And Downshifting In The Presence Of Damping, A. Islas, C. M. Schober

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Recently Gramstad and Trulsen derived a new higher order nonlinear Schrodinger (HONLS) equation which is Hamiltonian (Gramstad and Trulsen, 2011). We investigate the effects of dissipation on the development of rogue waves and downshifting by adding an additonal nonlinear damping term and a uniform linear damping term to this new HONLS equation. We find irreversible downshifting occurs when the nonlinear damping is the dominant damping effect. In particular, when only nonlinear damping is present, permanent downshifting occurs for all values of the nonlinear damping parameter beta. Significantly, rogue waves do not develop after the downshifting becomes permanent. Thus in our …

Causality Effects On Accelerating Light Pulses, Ido Kaminer, Yaakov Lumer, Mordechai Segev, Demetrios N. Christodoulides Jan 2011

Causality Effects On Accelerating Light Pulses, Ido Kaminer, Yaakov Lumer, Mordechai Segev, Demetrios N. Christodoulides

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

We study accelerating and decelerating shape-preserving temporal Airy wave-packets propagating in dispersive media. We explore the effects of causality, and find that, whereas decelerating pulses can asymptotically reach zero group velocity, pulses that accelerate towards infinite group velocity inevitably break up, after a specific critical point. The trajectories and the features of causal pulses are analyzed, along with the requirements for the existence of the critical point and experimental schemes for its observation. Finally, we show that causality imposes similar effects on accelerating pulses in the presence of local Kerr-like nonlinearities.

Local Tomography And The Motion Estimation Problem, Alexander Katsevich, A. Zamyatin Jan 2011

Local Tomography And The Motion Estimation Problem, Alexander Katsevich, A. Zamyatin

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

In this paper we study local tomography (LT) in the motion contaminated case. It is shown that microlocally, away from some critical directions, LT is equivalent to a pseudodifferential operator of order one. LT also produces nonlocal artifacts that are of the same strength as useful singularities. If motion is not accurately known, singularities inside the object f being scanned spread in different directions. A single edge can become a double edge. In such a case the image of f looks cluttered. Based on this observation we propose an algorithm for motion estimation. We propose an empiric measure of image …

Edge Clustered Fitting Grids For Phi-Polynomial Characterization Of Freeform Optical Surfaces, Ilhan Kaya, Kevin P. Thompson, Jannick P. Rolland Jan 2011

Edge Clustered Fitting Grids For Phi-Polynomial Characterization Of Freeform Optical Surfaces, Ilhan Kaya, Kevin P. Thompson, Jannick P. Rolland

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

With the recent emergence of slow-servo diamond turning, optical designs with surfaces that are not intrinsically rotationally symmetric can be manufactured. In this paper, we demonstrate some important limitations to Zernike polynomial representation of optical surfaces in describing the evolving freeform surface descriptions that are effective for optical design and encountered during optical fabrication. Specifically, we show that the ray grids commonly used in sampling a freeform surface to form a database from which to perform a phi-polynomial fit is limiting the efficacy of computation. We show an edge-clustered fitting grid that effectively suppresses the edge ringing that arises as …

An Investigation Of The Effects Of Using Digital Flash Cards To Increase Biology Vocabulary Knowledge In High School Students With Learning Disabilities, Kelly J. Grillo Jan 2011

An Investigation Of The Effects Of Using Digital Flash Cards To Increase Biology Vocabulary Knowledge In High School Students With Learning Disabilities, Kelly J. Grillo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The field of science education, specifically biology, is becoming more challenging due to richer and more rigorous content demands. Along with new demands is the emergence of National Common Core Standards and End of Course Exams. Despite these changes, one factor remains consistent: As content knowledge increases, language demands also increase. For students with learning disabilities (LD), specifically those with language-based disabilities, the increasing vocabulary demand can lead to failure due not to a lack of understanding biology but the vocabulary associated with the content. In an attempt to impact high school students with learning disabilities‘ success in biology, a …

The Mississippian (Visean-Serpukhovian) Barnett Formation is a lithologic unit composed primarily of laminated siliceous mudstone and calcareous siliceous mudstone with significant phosphate and sulfide phases present. The Barnett Formation was deposited in the Fort Worth Basin, a marine foreland basin that formed as a result of the early Ouachita Orogeny from the collision of Laurasia and Gondwana. In this study we used a variety of geochemical methods to provide a detailed assessment of the chemostratigraphy and paleoceanography of the Barnett Formation in the southern end of the Fort Worth Basin in Texas. Various aspects of the Barnett Formation studied include: …

Thermal Maturity And Porosity Development During Catagensis In The Barnett Shale, Fort Worth Basin, Texas, Nathan Glondys Jan 2011

Thermal Maturity And Porosity Development During Catagensis In The Barnett Shale, Fort Worth Basin, Texas, Nathan Glondys

Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive

Unconventional resource plays are typified by significantly recoverable volumes of thermally mature hydrocarbons (oil, condensate and/or gases) trapped within a low permeability shale formation acting as source, reservoir and seal. These systems pose a scientific and engineering challenge to produce recoverable hydrocarbons from, chiefly due to their low permeabilities. There is growing evidence that secondary porosity in organic gas bearing shales is created during the thermal maturation of kerogen. A better understanding of porosity development during maturation of mobile organics during catagenesis may yield new insight on how we view these systems. A comparative analysis of the gas phase(s), peak …

A Standardized Design For Quagga Mussel Monitoring In Lake Mead, Nevada-Arizona, Wai Hing Wong, Shawn Gerstenberger, Jennell M. Miller, Craig Palmer, Bryan Moore

Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research

The discovery of quagga mussels (Dreissena rostriformis bugensis) in Lake Mead, Nevada-Arizona, on January 6, 2007 is the first known occurrence of dreissenid species in the western United States. This study developed elements of a cost-effective and standardized quagga mussel-monitoring program for Lake Mead using preliminary data to arrive at statistically based numbers of sampling sites. To represent the abundance of adult/juvenile quagga mussels in Lake Mead’s heterogeneous floor with 95% confidence, a stratified simple random sampling design revealed a requirement of 41 samples from hard substrates (i.e., rocky areas) and 97 samples from soft substrates (i.e., sandy and muddy …
