Modeling Of Thermal Properties Of Fiber Glass Polyester Resin Composite Under Thermal Degradation Condition, Marvin S. Tsoi Jan 2011

Modeling Of Thermal Properties Of Fiber Glass Polyester Resin Composite Under Thermal Degradation Condition, Marvin S. Tsoi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Composites, though used in a variety of applications from chairs and office supplies to structures of U.S. Navy ships and aircrafts, are not all designed to hold up to extreme heat flux and high temperature. Fiber-reinforced polymeric composites (FRPC) have been proven to provide the much needed physical and mechanical properties under fire exposure. FRPC notable features are its combination of high specific tensile strength, low weight, along with good corrosion and fatigue resistance. However FRPC are susceptible to thermal degradation and decomposition, which yields flammable gas, and are thus highly combustible. This property restricts polymeric material usage. This study …

Gender Composition Of Online Technical Communication Collaborations, Erika A. Wardell Jan 2011

Gender Composition Of Online Technical Communication Collaborations, Erika A. Wardell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Online collaborations are more prevalent in society due to electronic communication allowing students and professionals to communicate with each other, without needing to spend time or money traveling. The lack of visual cues in electronic communication means writing styles primarily set the tone of a message. A group member‟s gender can affect his or her writing style and what he or she assumes about the message. The differing writing styles and potential gender bias can cause misunderstandings, which delay projects and sometimes lead to ostracizing a group member. The gender composition of an online collaboration, therefore, can have a positive …

Hückel Energy Of A Graph: Its Evolution From Quantum Chemistry To Mathematics, Steven Zimmerman Jan 2011

Hückel Energy Of A Graph: Its Evolution From Quantum Chemistry To Mathematics, Steven Zimmerman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The energy of a graph began with German physicist, Erich H¨uckel’s 1931 paper, Quantenttheoretische Beitr¨age zum Benzolproblem. His work developed a method for computing the binding energy of the π-electrons for a certain class of organic molecules. The vertices of the graph represented the carbon atoms while the single edge between each pair of distinct vertices represented the hydrogen bonds between the carbon atoms. In turn, the chemical graphs were represented by an n × n matrix used in solving Schr¨odinger’s eigenvalue/eigenvector equation. The sum of the absolute values of these graph eigenvalues represented the total π-electron energy. The criteria …

The Application Of Chemometrics To The Detection And Classification Of Ignitable Liquids In Fire Debris Using The Total Ion Spectrum, Jennifer N. Lewis Jan 2011

The Application Of Chemometrics To The Detection And Classification Of Ignitable Liquids In Fire Debris Using The Total Ion Spectrum, Jennifer N. Lewis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Current methods in ignitable liquid identification and classification from fire debris rely on pattern recognition of ignitable liquids in total ion chromatograms, extracted ion profiles, and target compound comparisons, as described in American Standards for Testing and Materials E1618-10. The total ion spectra method takes advantage of the reproducibility among sample spectra from the same American Society for Testing and Materials class. It is a method that is independent of the chromatographic conditions that affect retention times of target compounds, thus aiding in the use of computer-based library searching techniques. The total ion spectrum was obtained by summing the ion …

Intracavity Laser Absorption Spectroscopy Using Quantum Cascade Laser And Fabry-Perot Interferometer, Gautam Medhi Jan 2011

Intracavity Laser Absorption Spectroscopy Using Quantum Cascade Laser And Fabry-Perot Interferometer, Gautam Medhi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Intracavity Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (ICLAS) at IR wavelengths offers an opportunity for spectral sensing of low vapor pressure compounds. We report here an ICLAS system design based on a quantum cascade laser (QCL) at THz (69.9 m) and IR wavelengths (9.38 and 8.1 m) with an open external cavity. The sensitivity of such a system is potentially very high due to extraordinarily long effective optical paths that can be achieved in an active cavity. Sensitivity estimation by numerical solution of the laser rate equations for the THz QCL ICLAS system is determined. Experimental development of the external cavity QCL is …

I believed that my students would therefore utilize their notes and class work as a reference and study tool to assist them with their homework as well as studying for assessments. Weak to moderate …

Finding Dud Vertices In Defensive Alliances And Secure Sets Using Computational Tools, George Worley Ii Jan 2011

Finding Dud Vertices In Defensive Alliances And Secure Sets Using Computational Tools, George Worley Ii

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Defensive alliances are a way of using graphs to model the defense of resources (people, buildings, countries, etc.) against attacks where the number of potential attackers against each resource is known. The initial study of defensive alliances focused on questions of minimal defensive alliances in a graph and the minimum possible size of a defensive alliance in a graph, but in order to apply defensive alliances in modeling real-world situations, additional considerations are important. In particular, since each vertex in a defensive alliance represents some real-world object that has a cost associated with remaining in the defensive alliance, it is …

The Use Of Video Game Achievements To Enhance Player Performance, Self-Efficacy, And Motivation, Lucas Blair Jan 2011

The Use Of Video Game Achievements To Enhance Player Performance, Self-Efficacy, And Motivation, Lucas Blair

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A taxonomy of achievement design features that exist currently in video game systems was created in order to evaluate the current the state of the art in achievement design. From the taxonomy of design features multiple mechanisms of action that influence player behavior were identified. These mechanisms lead to a predictive model that can guide the designs of achievements in order to improve performance, self-efficacy and motivation in players. Expected, unexpected, and incremental achievements were tested. Notifications occurring before and after earning an achievement were also tested. In addition to testing individual mechanisms of action a “combined achievement” was created …

Characterization Of Composite Broad Band Absorbing Conjugated Polymer Nanoparticles Using Steady-State, Time-Resolve And Single Particle Spectroscopy, Maxwell Scotland Bonner Jan 2011

Characterization Of Composite Broad Band Absorbing Conjugated Polymer Nanoparticles Using Steady-State, Time-Resolve And Single Particle Spectroscopy, Maxwell Scotland Bonner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As the global economy searches for reliable, inexpensive and environmentally friendly renewable energy resources, energy conservation by means of photovoltaics has seen near exponential growth in the last decade. Compared to state-of-the-art inorganic solar cells, organic photovoltaics (OPVs) composed of conjugated polymers are particularly interesting because of their processability, flexibility and the potential for large area devices at a reduced fabrication cost. It has been extensively documented that the interchain and intrachain interactions of conjugated polymers complicate the fundamental understanding of the optical and electronic properties in the solid-state (i.e. thin film active layer). These interactions are highly dependent on …

Perceptual Judgment The Impact Of Image Complexity And Training Method On Category Learning, Michael T. Curtis Jan 2011

Perceptual Judgment The Impact Of Image Complexity And Training Method On Category Learning, Michael T. Curtis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this dissertation was to bridge the gap between perceptual learning theory and training application. Visual perceptual skill has been a vexing topic in training science for decades. In complex task domains, from aviation to medicine, visual perception is critical to task success. Despite this, little, if any, emphasis is dedicated to developing perceptual skills through training. Much of this may be attributed to the perceived inefficiency of perceptual training. Recent applied research in perceptual training with discrimination training, however, holds promise for improved perceptual training efficiency. As with all applied research, it is important to root application …

Ultra High Density Spectral Beam Combining By Thermal Tuning Of Volume Bragg Gratings In Photo-Thermo-Refractive Glass, Derrek Drachenberg Jan 2011

Ultra High Density Spectral Beam Combining By Thermal Tuning Of Volume Bragg Gratings In Photo-Thermo-Refractive Glass, Derrek Drachenberg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

High power lasers with diffraction limited beam quality are desired for many applications in defense and manufacturing. A lot of applications require laser beams at the 100 kW power level along with divergence close to the diffraction limit. The figure of merit for a beam used in such applications should be radiance which determines the laser power delivered to a remote target. One of the primary limiting factors is thermal distortion of a laser beam caused by excessive heat generated in the laser media. Combination of multiple laser beams is usually considered as a method to mitigate these limitations. Spectral …

Infrared Emission Spectroscopy Of Hot Carbon Monoxide, Farnood Khalilzadeh Rezaie Jan 2011

Infrared Emission Spectroscopy Of Hot Carbon Monoxide, Farnood Khalilzadeh Rezaie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Gas giant exoplanets known as hot Jupiters orbit close to their parent stars and are heated to high temperatures. Their infrared spectra, measured by photometry during secondary eclipses, are dominated by carbon monoxide and methane, the principle reservoirs of carbon on these planets. The relative CO and CH4 abundances inform us about temperature and pressure conditions and also about mixing by global winds driven by intense but asymmetric heating for these tidally locked bodies. Emission spectra collected during secondary eclipses, as the hot Jupiter passes behind its parent star, in principle allows a determination of the CO:CH4 concentration ratio. Since …

Perceptual Image Quality Of Launch Vehicle Imaging Telescopes, Joshua K. Lentz Jan 2011

Perceptual Image Quality Of Launch Vehicle Imaging Telescopes, Joshua K. Lentz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A large fleet (in the hundreds) of high quality telescopes are used for tracking and imaging of launch vehicles during ascent from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and Kennedy Space Center. A maintenance tool has been development for use with these telescopes. The tool requires rankings of telescope condition in terms of the ability to generate useful imagery. It is thus a case of ranking telescope conditions on the basis of the perceptual image quality of their imagery. Perceptual image quality metrics that are well-correlated to observer opinions of image quality have been available for several decades. However, these are …

Are We Becoming Superhuman Cyborgs? How Technomorphism Influences Our Perceptions Of The World Around Us, Heather Christina Lum Jan 2011

Are We Becoming Superhuman Cyborgs? How Technomorphism Influences Our Perceptions Of The World Around Us, Heather Christina Lum

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although traditionally researchers have focused on making robotics more user-friendly from a human perspective, a new theory has begun to take shape in which humans take on the perspective of a robotic entity. The following set of studies examined the concept of technomorphism defined as the attribution of technological characteristics to humans. This concept has been mentioned anecdotally and studied indirectly, but there is nothing currently available to tap in to the various forms that technomorphism may take. Therefore, one goal of this dissertation was to develop a scale to fill that purpose. The results of the Technomorphic Tendencies Scale …

Fractal Spectral Measures In Two Dimensions, Beng Oscar Alrud Jan 2011

Fractal Spectral Measures In Two Dimensions, Beng Oscar Alrud

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

We study spectral properties for invariant measures associated to affine iterated function systems. We present various conditions under which the existence of a Hadamard pair implies the existence of a spectrum for the fractal measure. This solves a conjecture proposed by Dorin Dutkay and Palle Jorgensen, in several special cases in dimension 2.

The focus of this research was to identify variables reported in the 2008-2009 Florida School Indicator Report (FSIR) that had a statistical impact, positive or negative, on the likelihood that a school would achieve Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in reading or mathematics using the logistic regression technique. This study analyzed four broad categories reported by the FSIR to include academic, school, student, and teacher characteristics. FSIR and AYP data was collected for 468 Florida high schools that were categorized by the Florida Department of Education as presenting a comprehensive curriculum to grades 9-12 or grades 10-12. It was determined in …

Few-Cycle Pulses Amplification For Attosecond Science Applications Modeling And Experiments, Michael Hemmer Jan 2011

Few-Cycle Pulses Amplification For Attosecond Science Applications Modeling And Experiments, Michael Hemmer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The emergence of mode-locked oscillators providing pulses with durations as short as a few electric-field cycles in the near infra-red has paved the way toward electric-field sensitive physics experiments. In addition, the control of the relative phase between the carrier and the pulse envelope, developed in the early 2000’s and rewarded by a Nobel price in 2005, now provides unprecedented control over the pulse behaviour. The amplification of such pulses to the millijoule level has been an on-going task in a few world-class laboratories and has triggered the dawn of attoscience, the science of events happening on an attosecond timescale. …

The purpose of this study was to examine my own practice of teaching place value and the influence virtual manipulatives had, in addition to physical manipulatives, on place value understanding of my second grade students. I wanted to see how adding a base-ten computer applet might better meet the needs of all learners while also meeting the needs of today’s technological classroom. Through this study, I found that both physical and virtual manipulatives helped students acquire place value concepts. I found that virtual manipulatives had features that engaged students in a way that increased their mathematical language, increased students’ ability …

Tunneling Conductance Characterization Of A Quantum Dot In The Fractional Quantum Hall Regime, Douglas E. Willard Jan 2011

Tunneling Conductance Characterization Of A Quantum Dot In The Fractional Quantum Hall Regime, Douglas E. Willard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This work represents a first-principles calculation of the electron tunneling current into quantum dots in the fractional quantum Hall effect regime. The system under consideration consists of an idealized Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) tip and a quantum dot with disk geometry and interacting electrons in a transverse magnetic field. Within the context of this model the tunneling current between the STM tip and the dot is examined for spin-polarized electrons at and around a filling factor of 1/3. The current expression is based on a second-quantized Hamiltonian in which electrons in the dot are interacting, confined, and restricted to the …

On The Orbit Of Exoplanet Wasp-12b, Christopher J. Campo, Joseph Harrington, Ryan A. Hardy, Kevin B. Stevenson, Sarah Nymeyer, Darin Ragozzine, Nate B. Lust, David R. Anderson, Andrew Collier-Cameron, Jasmina Blecic, Christopher B. T. Britt, William C. Bowman, Peter J. Wheatley, Thomas J. Loredo, Drake Deming, Leslie Hebb, Coel Hellier, Pierre F. L. Maxted, Don Pollaco, Richard G. West

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

We observed two secondary eclipses of the exoplanet WASP-12b using the Infrared Array Camera on the Spitzer Space Telescope. The close proximity of WASP-12b to its G-type star results in extreme tidal forces capable of inducing apsidal precession with a period as short as a few decades. This precession would be measurable if the orbit had a significant eccentricity, leading to an estimate of the tidal Love number and an assessment of the degree of central concentration in the planetary interior. An initial ground-based secondary-eclipse phase reported by Lopez-Morales et al. (0.510 +/- 0.002) implied eccentricity at the 4.5 sigma …

Discrete Beam Acceleration In Uniform Waveguide Arrays, Ramy El-Ganainy, Konstantinos G. Makris, Mohammad Ali Miri, Demetrios N. Christodoulides, Zhigang Chen Jan 2011

Discrete Beam Acceleration In Uniform Waveguide Arrays, Ramy El-Ganainy, Konstantinos G. Makris, Mohammad Ali Miri, Demetrios N. Christodoulides, Zhigang Chen

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Within the framework of the tight-binding model we demonstrate that Wannier-Stark states can freely accelerate in uniform optical lattices. As opposed to accelerating Airy wave packets in free space, our analysis reveals that in this case the beam main intensity features self-bend along two opposite hyperbolic trajectories. Two-dimensional geometries are also considered and an asymptotic connection between these Wannier-Stark ladders and Airy profiles is presented.

Unified Description Of The Dc Conductivity Of Monolayer And Bilayer Graphene At Finite Densities Based On Resonant Scatterers, Aires Ferreira, J. Viana-Gomes, Johan Nilsson, E. R. Mucciolo, N. M. R. Peres, A. H. Castro Neto Jan 2011

Unified Description Of The Dc Conductivity Of Monolayer And Bilayer Graphene At Finite Densities Based On Resonant Scatterers, Aires Ferreira, J. Viana-Gomes, Johan Nilsson, E. R. Mucciolo, N. M. R. Peres, A. H. Castro Neto

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

We show that a coherent picture of the dc conductivity of monolayer and bilayer graphene at finite electronic densities emerges upon considering that strong short-range potentials are the main source of scattering in these two systems. The origin of the strong short-range potentials may lie in adsorbed hydrocarbons at the surface of graphene. The equivalence among results based on the partial-wave description of scattering, the Lippmann-Schwinger equation, and the T-matrix approach is established. Scattering due to resonant impurities close to the neutrality point is investigated via a numerical computation of the Kubo formula using a kernel polynomial method. We find …

A Coupled Remote Sensing And The Surface Energy Balance With Topography Algorithm (Sebta) To Estimate Actual Evapotranspiration Over Heterogeneous Terrain, Z. Q. Gao, C. S. Liu, W. Gao, N -B. Chang

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Evapotranspiration (ET) may be used as an ecological indicator to address the ecosystem complexity. The accurate measurement of ET is of great significance for studying environmental sustainability, global climate changes, and biodiversity. Remote sensing technologies are capable of monitoring both energy and water fluxes on the surface of the Earth. With this advancement, existing models, such as SEBAL, S_SEBI and SEBS, enable us to estimate the regional ET with limited temporal and spatial coverage in the study areas. This paper extends the existing modeling efforts with the inclusion of new components for ET estimation at different temporal and spatial scales …

Adaptively Refined Hybrid Fdm-Rbf Meshless Scheme With Applications To Laminar And Turbulent Viscous Fluid Flows, S. Gerace, K. Erhart, E. Divo, A. Kassab Jan 2011

Adaptively Refined Hybrid Fdm-Rbf Meshless Scheme With Applications To Laminar And Turbulent Viscous Fluid Flows, S. Gerace, K. Erhart, E. Divo, A. Kassab

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

The focus of this work is to demonstrate a novel approach to true CFD automation based on an adaptive Cartesian point distribution process coupled with a Mesh less flow solution algorithm. As Mesh less method solutions require only an underlying nodal distribution, this approach works well even for complex flow geometries with non-aligned domain boundaries. Through the addition of a so-called shadow layer of body-fitted nodes, application of boundary conditions is simplified considerably, eliminating the stair-casing issues of typical Cartesian-based techniques. This paper describes the approach taken to automatically generate the Mesh less nodal distribution, along with the details of …

Retention Time Variability As A Mechanism For Animal Mediated Long-Distance Dispersal, Vishwesha Guttal, Frederic Bartumeus, Gregg Hartvigsen, Andrew L. Nevai Jan 2011

Retention Time Variability As A Mechanism For Animal Mediated Long-Distance Dispersal, Vishwesha Guttal, Frederic Bartumeus, Gregg Hartvigsen, Andrew L. Nevai

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Long-distance dispersal (LDD) events, although rare for most plant species, can strongly influence population and community dynamics. Animals function as a key biotic vector of seeds and thus, a mechanistic and quantitative understanding of how individual animal behaviors scale to dispersal patterns at different spatial scales is a question of critical importance from both basic and applied perspectives. Using a diffusion-theory based analytical approach for a wide range of animal movement and seed transportation patterns, we show that the scale (a measure of local dispersal) of the seed dispersal kernel increases with the organisms' rate of movement and mean seed …

Front Solutions For Bistable Differential-Difference Equations With Inhomogeneous Diffusion, A. R. Humphries, Brian E. Moore, Erik S. Van Vleck Jan 2011

Front Solutions For Bistable Differential-Difference Equations With Inhomogeneous Diffusion, A. R. Humphries, Brian E. Moore, Erik S. Van Vleck

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

We consider a bistable differential-difference equation with inhomogeneous diffusion. Employing a piecewise linear nonlinearity, often referred to as McKean's caricature of the cubic, we construct front solutions which correspond, in the case of homogeneous diffusion, to monotone traveling front solutions or, in the case of propagation failure, to stationary front solutions. A general form for these fronts is given for essentially arbitrary inhomogeneous discrete diffusion, and conditions are given for the existence of solutions to the original discrete Nagumo equation. The specific case of one defect is considered in depth, giving a complete understanding of propagation failure and a grasp …
