The Evolution Of Islamic Arches Till 1250, Ehsan Abushadi Jan 2011

The Evolution Of Islamic Arches Till 1250, Ehsan Abushadi

Papers, Posters, and Presentations

This paper discusses the development of, and influences on, the form of arches in the Islamic period up until the year 1250; using examples from across the empire while charting the development from area to area through time. It starts with the semicircular arch and how that developed into the pointed arch with its varieties. The paper also explores how the shouldered arch developed, leading to the tri-lobed and keel arch. On the other hand, there is no clear development path for the horse shoe arch which suggests that it may have developed in various parts of the world at …

Incorporating Existing Library Partnerships Into Open Access Week Events, Andrea A. Wirth Jan 2011

Incorporating Existing Library Partnerships Into Open Access Week Events, Andrea A. Wirth

Collaborative Librarianship

Oregon State University (OSU) Libraries participated in Open Access (OA) Week in 2009 and 2010. In order to expand the range of events offered, the committee members assigned to program planning looked for opportunities to work with partners beyond the library. The collaborative activities developed through these partnerships created settings for in-depth conversations among librarians, faculty, and students about scholarly communication issues. Subject librarians’ relationships with their departments provided opportunities to host events in venues other than the library, which helped, facilitate access to a diverse audience. An established cooperative relationship with the University of Oregon made it possible to …

Toward A Set Of Theoretical Best Practices For Web 2.0 And Web-Based Technologies, Matthew Kruger-Ross, Lori B. Holcomb

Educational Foundations & Policy Studies Faculty Publications

Many educators are excited by and support the innovative and pedagogically invigorating technologies offered by the interactive and collaborative Web 2.0 movement. To date, much of the research on the integration of Web 2.0 tools has focused on technical and procedural generalizations about how one might incorporate these technologies into the classroom. While some research has addressed content specific uses of these tools, only a limited amount has explored best practices for using these technologies to encourage learning. While these studies are groundbreaking and serve an important purpose, this article aims to shift the ongoing conversation toward a first draft …

Rational Design Of Etchants For Electroless Porous Silicon Formation, Kurt Kolasinski, J W. Gogola Jan 2011

Rational Design Of Etchants For Electroless Porous Silicon Formation, Kurt Kolasinski, J W. Gogola

Chemistry Faculty Publications

From fundamental considerations of the surface chemistry of Si etching in fluoride solutions as well as pore formation and propagation, we develop a mechanistic understanding of what must be known for rational development of etchants: (1) an acidic fluoride solution because the presence of OH- promotes step flow etching, (2) sufficiently high fluoride concentration compared to the oxidant concentration, (3) the oxidant must be able to inject holes into the Si valance band at a sufficient rate, hence E degrees > similar to 0.7 V is required, (4) oxide formation needs to be slow or nonexistent so as to avoid the …

Art In The Light Of Knowing A Cognitive Approach To The Creative Process, Victor M. Knoe Jan 2011

Art In The Light Of Knowing A Cognitive Approach To The Creative Process, Victor M. Knoe

HIM 1990-2015

Art can be an elusive concept. Neither an outsider nor a professional artist is immune to abstractions in the attempt to describe it. Every individual must necessarily come from their own, unique perspective. The obstacles that we experience in defining the essence of art can be better understood if we see them as a gauge for our historical period. Given the limits of our contemporary conditions, it seems impossible that we may ever overcome the vast chasms that imprison us. We are discouraged to build bridges, at almost every turn, by the suggestive hopelessness of the abysmal distances between us. …

The Accuracy Of Climate Models' Simulated Season Lengths And The Effectiveness Of Grid Scale Correction Factors, Wade E. Winterhalter Jan 2011

The Accuracy Of Climate Models' Simulated Season Lengths And The Effectiveness Of Grid Scale Correction Factors, Wade E. Winterhalter

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Global climate change is expected to impact biological populations through a variety of mechanisms including increases in the length of their growing season. Climate models are useful tools for predicting how season length might change in the future. However, the accuracy of these models tends to be rather low at regional geographic scales. Here, I determined the ability of several atmosphere and ocean general circulating models (AOGCMs) to accurately simulate historical season lengths for a temperate ectotherm across the continental United States. I also evaluated the effectiveness of regional-scale correction factors to improve the accuracy of these models. I found …

Boundary Layer Flow Past A Stretching/Shrinking Surface Beneath An External Uniform Shear Flow With A Convective Surface Boundary Condition In A Nanofluid, Nor Azizah Yacob, Anuar Ishak, Ioan Pop, Kuppalapalle Vajravelu Jan 2011

Boundary Layer Flow Past A Stretching/Shrinking Surface Beneath An External Uniform Shear Flow With A Convective Surface Boundary Condition In A Nanofluid, Nor Azizah Yacob, Anuar Ishak, Ioan Pop, Kuppalapalle Vajravelu

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

The problem of a steady boundary layer shear flow over a stretching/shrinking sheet in a nanofluid is studied numerically. The governing partial differential equations are transformed into ordinary differential equations using a similarity transformation, before being solved numerically by a Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg method with shooting technique. Two types of nanofluids, namely, Cu-water and Ag-water are used. The effects of nanoparticle volume fraction, the type of nanoparticles, the convective parameter, and the thermal conductivity on the heat transfer characteristics are discussed. It is found that the heat transfer rate at the surface increases with increasing nanoparticle volume fraction while it decreases with …

Polymer Translocation Induced By A Bad Solvent, Christopher Lörscher, Tapio Ala-Nissila, Aniket Bhattacharya Jan 2011

Polymer Translocation Induced By A Bad Solvent, Christopher Lörscher, Tapio Ala-Nissila, Aniket Bhattacharya

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

We study polymer translocation through a nanopore subject to conformational differences created by putting two different solvents at the cis and trans compartments using Langevin dynamics in three dimensions (3D). Initially a fraction of the chain is placed in a good solvent at the cis side and the rest of the chain at the trans side is immersed in a bad solvent where it forms a globule. We study several aspects of the translocating chain as a function of the strength of the interaction epsilon/k(B)T for the bad solvent, where the temperature T is kept below the Theta temperature for …

Multichannel Boxcar Deconvolution With Growing Number Of Channels, Marianna Pensky, Theofanis Sapatinas Jan 2011

Multichannel Boxcar Deconvolution With Growing Number Of Channels, Marianna Pensky, Theofanis Sapatinas

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

We consider the problem of estimating the unknown response function in the multichannel deconvolution model with a boxcar-like kernel which is of particular interest in signal processing. It is known that, when the number of channels is finite, the precision of reconstruction of the response function increases as the number of channels M grow (even when the total number of observations n for all channels M remains constant) and this requires that the parameter of the channels form a Badly Approximable M-tuple. Recent advances in data collection and recording techniques made it of urgent interest to study the case when …

Four-Parameter Model For Polarization-Resolved Rough-Surface Brdf, Ingmar G. E. Renhorn, Tomas Hallberg, David Bergström, Glenn D. Boreman Jan 2011

Four-Parameter Model For Polarization-Resolved Rough-Surface Brdf, Ingmar G. E. Renhorn, Tomas Hallberg, David Bergström, Glenn D. Boreman

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

A modeling procedure is demonstrated, which allows representation of polarization-resolved BRDF data using only four parameters: the real and imaginary parts of an effective refractive index with an added parameter taking grazing incidence absorption into account and an angular-scattering parameter determined from the BRDF measurement of a chosen angle of incidence, preferably close to normal incidence. These parameters allow accurate predictions of s- and p-polarized BRDF for a painted rough surface, over three decades of variation in BRDF magnitude. To characterize any particular surface of interest, the measurements required to determine these four parameters are the directional hemispherical reflectance (DHR) …

Morphologies From Slippery Ballistic Deposition Model: A Bottom-Up Approach For Nanofabrication, Anthony Robledo, Christopher N. Grabill, Stephen M. Kuebler, Aniruddha Dutta, Helge Heinrich, Aniket Bhattacharya Jan 2011

Morphologies From Slippery Ballistic Deposition Model: A Bottom-Up Approach For Nanofabrication, Anthony Robledo, Christopher N. Grabill, Stephen M. Kuebler, Aniruddha Dutta, Helge Heinrich, Aniket Bhattacharya

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

We report pattern formation using a slippery ballistic deposition (SBD) model where growth germinates from a single site or from sites distributed periodically on a lattice. By changing the sticking probability p(s) and choosing systems with different lattice constants and symmetries, we demonstrate that a variety of patterns can be generated. These patterns can be further used as scaffolds for nanofabrication. We also demonstrate that by choosing a lateral sticking probability p(l) at the base that is different than p(s), one can control both the early and late time morphologies originating from a seed. Furthermore, we indicate a possible generalization …

Metallothionein Expression In Chloroplasts Enhances Mercury Accumulation And Phytoremediation Capability, Oscar N. Ruiz, Derry Alvarez, Cesar Torres, Laura Roman, Henry Daniell Jan 2011

Metallothionein Expression In Chloroplasts Enhances Mercury Accumulation And Phytoremediation Capability, Oscar N. Ruiz, Derry Alvarez, Cesar Torres, Laura Roman, Henry Daniell

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Genetic engineering to enhance mercury phytoremediation has been accomplished by expression of the merAB genes that protects the cell by converting Hg[II] into Hg[0] which volatilizes from the cell. A drawback of this approach is that toxic Hg is released back into the environment. A better phytoremediation strategy would be to accumulate mercury inside plants for subsequent retrieval. We report here the development of a transplastomic approach to express the mouse metallothionein gene (mt1) and accumulate mercury in high concentrations within plant cells. Real-time PCR analysis showed that up to 1284 copies of the mt1 gene were found per cell …

A Selenium-Dependent Xanthine Dehydrogenase Triggers Biofilm Proliferation In Enterococcus Faecalis Through Oxidant Production, Milan Srivastava, Chris Mallard, Theresa Barke, Lynn E. Hancock, William T. Self Jan 2011

A Selenium-Dependent Xanthine Dehydrogenase Triggers Biofilm Proliferation In Enterococcus Faecalis Through Oxidant Production, Milan Srivastava, Chris Mallard, Theresa Barke, Lynn E. Hancock, William T. Self

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Selenium has been shown to be present as a labile cofactor in a small class of molybdenum hydroxylase enzymes in several species of clostridia that specialize in the fermentation of purines and pyrimidines. This labile cofactor is poorly understood, yet recent bioinformatic studies have suggested that Enterococcus faecalis could serve as a model system to better understand the way in which this enzyme cofactor is built and the role of these metalloenzymes in the physiology of the organism. An mRNA that encodes a predicted selenium-dependent molybdenum hydroxylase (SDMH) has also been shown to be specifically increased during the transition from …

Nonlinear Birefringence Due To Non-Resonant, Higher-Order Kerr Effect In Isotropic Media, George Stegeman, Dimitris G. Papazoglou, Robert Boyd, Stelios Tzortzakis Jan 2011

Nonlinear Birefringence Due To Non-Resonant, Higher-Order Kerr Effect In Isotropic Media, George Stegeman, Dimitris G. Papazoglou, Robert Boyd, Stelios Tzortzakis

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

The recent interpretation of experiments on the nonlinear nonresonant birefringence induced in a weak probe beam by a high intensity pump beam in air and its constituents has stimulated interest in the nonresonant birefringence due to higher-order Kerr nonlinearities. Here a simple formalism is invoked to determine the non-resonant birefringence for higher-order Kerr coefficients. Some general relations between nonlinear coefficients with arbitrary frequency inputs are also derived for isotropic media. It is shown that the previous linear extrapolations for higher-order birefringence (based on literature values of n(2) and n(4)) are not strictly valid, although the errors introduced in the values …

Theoretical Study Of Beam Transformations By Volume Diffraction, Sergiy V. Mokhov Jan 2011

Theoretical Study Of Beam Transformations By Volume Diffraction, Sergiy V. Mokhov

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Laser beams can be manipulated by volume diffractive elements in addition to conventional optical elements like mirrors, lenses, and beam splitters. Conventional optical elements can be described by applying the basic laws of reflection and refraction at the surfaces of the elements. Even diffraction by surface gratings utilizes relatively simple mathematics. This is to be contrasted with the volume diffraction, which requires coupled wave theory in the slowly varying envelope approximation (SVEA) to obtain accurate results. Efficient spatially distributed diffraction of laser beams is possible due to the high coherence of laser light, and it occurs at specific resonant Bragg …

Emergent Writing Skills In Preschool Children With Language Impairment, Stacey Lynne Pavelko Jan 2011

Emergent Writing Skills In Preschool Children With Language Impairment, Stacey Lynne Pavelko

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Much research demonstrates that alphabet knowledge, phonological awareness, and emergent writing are all significant predictors of later reading and writing outcomes, and that children with language impairments (LI) are particularly at risk for later literacy difficulties. Further, children with LI consistently demonstrate depressed emergent literacy skills in the areas of phonological awareness, print concepts, and alphabet knowledge; however, little is known about their emergent writing skills. Therefore, the purposes of this study were twofold: (1) to compare the emergent writing skills of preschool children with language impairment to their typically developing peers using a range of writing tasks and a …

The results of this study offered guidance for principals across the state of Florida who struggled to close the achievement gap between economically advantaged and disadvantaged students. To achieve the purpose of the study, …

Electromagnetic Propagation Anomalies In Waveguiding Structures And Scattering Systems, Alessandro Salandrino Jan 2011

Electromagnetic Propagation Anomalies In Waveguiding Structures And Scattering Systems, Alessandro Salandrino

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The effects related to diffraction and interference are ubiquitous in phenomena involving electromagnetic wave propagation, and are accurately predicted and described within the framework of classical electrodynamics. In the vast majority of the cases the qualitative features of the evolution of a propagating wave can be inferred even without detailed calculations. A field distribution will spread upon propagation, will accumulate phase along the direction of power flow, will exert mechanical forces upon scattering objects in the direction of propagation etc. When such predictions fail, counterintuitive effects and new functionalities can be engineered. In this work a series of exceptional cases …

A Multiple Case Study Investigating The Effects Of Technology On Students' Visual And Nonvisual Thinking Preferences Comparing Paper-Pencil And Dynamic Software Based Strategies Of Algebra Word Problems, Sirin Coskun

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this multiple-case study, I developed cases describing three students‘ (Mary, Ryan and David) solution methods for algebra word problems and investigated the effect of technology on their solution methods by making inferences about their preferences for visual or nonvisual solutions. Furthermore, I examined the students‘ solution methods when presented with virtual physical representations of the situations described in the problems and attempted to explain the effect of those representations on students‘ thinking preferences. In this study, the use of technology referred to the use of the dynamic software program Geogebra. Suwarsono‘s (1982) Mathematical Processing Instrument (MPI) was administered to …

Estimation For The Cox Model With Various Types Of Censored Data, Tonya Riddlesworth Jan 2011

Estimation For The Cox Model With Various Types Of Censored Data, Tonya Riddlesworth

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In survival analysis, the Cox model is one of the most widely used tools. However, up to now there has not been any published work on the Cox model with complicated types of censored data, such as doubly censored data, partly-interval censored data, etc., while these types of censored data have been encountered in important medical studies, such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, etc. In this dissertation, we first derive the bivariate nonparametric maximum likelihood estimator (BNPMLE) F[subscript n](t,z) for joint distribution function F[sub 0](t,z) of survival time T and covariate Z, where T is subject to right censoring, noting …

Modeling Of Thermal Properties Of Fiber Glass Polyester Resin Composite Under Thermal Degradation Condition, Marvin S. Tsoi Jan 2011

Modeling Of Thermal Properties Of Fiber Glass Polyester Resin Composite Under Thermal Degradation Condition, Marvin S. Tsoi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Composites, though used in a variety of applications from chairs and office supplies to structures of U.S. Navy ships and aircrafts, are not all designed to hold up to extreme heat flux and high temperature. Fiber-reinforced polymeric composites (FRPC) have been proven to provide the much needed physical and mechanical properties under fire exposure. FRPC notable features are its combination of high specific tensile strength, low weight, along with good corrosion and fatigue resistance. However FRPC are susceptible to thermal degradation and decomposition, which yields flammable gas, and are thus highly combustible. This property restricts polymeric material usage. This study …
