Immanent Beauty, Jenamarie Bacot Oct 2011

Immanent Beauty, Jenamarie Bacot

Theses

This document defends a creative process that is driven by emotion and faith, within which the impulsive, improvisational, and expressive act exists. It is a spiritual act because of the belief that I am creating through the work something honest and therefore important. This defense will be supported by analysis of me and my work, evaluation of artists and artwork created throughout history that have inspired me, as well as philosophical, theological, and critical thoughts towards creative experiences inspired by beauty defending truth.

Long-Term Predictive Value Interval With The Fuzzy Time Series, Ming-Tao Chou Oct 2011

Long-Term Predictive Value Interval With The Fuzzy Time Series, Ming-Tao Chou

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This paper presents a new mathematical method to construct a fuzzy time series model of a system where the fuzzy support and interval values are used. This paper further presents an improved fuzzy time series model with a long-term predictive value interval and shows that the proposed definition can be used for long-term forecasting. The enrollment data of the University of Alabama (adopted by Song and Chissom, 1993) are used to demonstrate the proposed forecast model.

A Psychoanalytical Approach To Bich Minh Nguyen's Stealing Buddha's Dinner, Wenying Xu Oct 2011

A Psychoanalytical Approach To Bich Minh Nguyen's Stealing Buddha's Dinner, Wenying Xu

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

Racial minorities in the U.S. are often tormented by the tension between the corporeal and the ontological, with the former experienced as confining and the latter expansive. Such ambivalence often expresses itself in one's relationship with food. Here I propose to illustrate how Jacques Lacan's psychoanalytical theory on desire can assist us in understanding ethnicity as a bodily performance, which I venture to call an embodied ontology, applying this concept to Bich Minh Nguyen's Stealing Buddha's Dinner (2007).

Not My Brother's Keeper: Accounting Firms Face Increased Securities Claims For Audits Performed By Affiliates In Other Countries, Bryan J. Hall

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

This Note proceeds in three parts. Part I discusses the development of the modern global structure of accounting firms and analyzes recent district court decisions in which accounting firms have not been held liable for audits performed by affiliated accounting firms. Part I also considers the implications of three Supreme Court decisions that rejected secondary liability under section 10(b) of the Securities Exchange Act. Part II explores the facts leading up to Parmalat’s bankruptcy and the district court’s decision to apply agency and control liability to global and U.S. accounting firms. Part III argues that the court in Parmalat …

The Effects Of Daycare On Children's Socialization In The First Three Years Of School, Alison Pomykacz Oct 2011

The Effects Of Daycare On Children's Socialization In The First Three Years Of School, Alison Pomykacz

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the role that daycare may play in a child's socialization during his/her first three years of school (K-2). In particular, this study focused on the time spent in daycare per week compared with various social and academic realms. Information was obtained through parent and teacher questionnaires. While there appeared to be a wide variation among the children's hours per week spent in class, when these numbers were compared to the teacher observations, there was no apparent significance.

Towards A New Critical Literacy: Literature, Community Engagement And The Global Public Good, Bidhan Roy Oct 2011

Towards A New Critical Literacy: Literature, Community Engagement And The Global Public Good, Bidhan Roy

Higher Learning Research Communications

What does it mean for a student to be critically literate in the Twenty First Century? How do we teach critical literacy within university humanities programs in the United States? And what are the implications of critical literacy for the conception and praxis of the global good? Using Richard Hoggart and Raymond Williams’ conceptions of critical literacy, I outline a pedagogical approach to literature and cultural studies that offers a conceptual space for students to imagine and engage with ideas of the global good. From the perspective of student learning, this approach to community engagement offers students opportunities to “read” …

Thresholds To Middle-Earth: Allegories Of Reading, Allegories For Knowledge And Transformation, Andrew Hallam

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Alexei Kondratiev Student Presentation Award, Mythcon 42. Begins by strongly questioning Tolkien’s own assertions about allegory, and draws on a wide range of theory and scholarship to show the subtle operation of a deep pattern of allegory in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings centered around imagery of readers and reading, thresholds and journeys.

Nossa And Nuestra América: Inter-American Dialogues, Robert Patrick Newcomb Oct 2011

Nossa And Nuestra América: Inter-American Dialogues, Robert Patrick Newcomb

Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures

Is Brazil part of Latin America, or an island unto itself? As Nossa and Nuestra América: Inter-American Dialogues demonstrates, this question has been debated by Brazilian and Spanish American intellectuals alike since the early nineteenth century, though it has received limited scholarly attention and its answer is less obvious than you might think. This book charts Brazil's evolving and often conflicted relationship with the idea of Latin America through a detailed comparative investigation of four crucial Latin American essayists: Uruguayan critic José Enrique Rodó, Brazilian writer-diplomat Joaquim Nabuco, Mexican humanist Alfonso Reyes, and Sérgio Buarque de Holanda, one of Brazil's …

Jews And Humor, Leonard Greenspoon Oct 2011

Jews And Humor, Leonard Greenspoon

Studies in Jewish Civilization

Jews and humor is, for most people, a natural and felicitous collocation. In spite of, or perhaps because of, a history of crises and living on the edge, Jews have often created or resorted to humor. But what is “humor”? And what makes certain types, instances, or performances of humor “Jewish”? These are among the myriad queries addressed by the fourteen authors whose essays are collected in this volume. And, thankfully, their observations, always apt and often witty, are expressed with a lightness of style and a depth of analysis that are appropriate to the many topics they cover. The …

The Pearl Maiden's Psyche: The Middle English Pearl And The Allegorical-Visionary Impulse In Till We Have Faces, T. S. Miller Oct 2011

The Pearl Maiden's Psyche: The Middle English Pearl And The Allegorical-Visionary Impulse In Till We Have Faces, T. S. Miller

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Lewis’s firm assertion that Till We Have Faces is not the least bit allegorical is challenged through its parallels in plot and theme with the highly allegorical Middle English Pearl. The deep allegorical structures in both revolve around seeing truly and falsely, and blindness both intentional and ignorant.

Designing And Implementing Two-Way, Dual Language Programs: Issues To Consider, April Haulman, Regina Lopez Oct 2011

Designing And Implementing Two-Way, Dual Language Programs: Issues To Consider, April Haulman, Regina Lopez

Administrative Issues Journal

With growing pressure on school administrators to close the achievement gap for English language learners, two-way immersion programs are being considered in increasing numbers across the nation. In this program design, language minority children are placed in classrooms with native English speakers and both groups of children learn and achieve in both languages. In well-designed programs the outcomes show that the program produces academic achievement across the curriculum that is equal or better than students educated in monolingual classrooms on standardized tests in English. Plus they also enjoy the benefits of becoming balanced bilinguals. This report reviews the literature on …

Cooperative Patent Prosecution: Viewing Patents Through A Pragmatic Lens, Kristen Osenga Oct 2011

Cooperative Patent Prosecution: Viewing Patents Through A Pragmatic Lens, Kristen Osenga

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

This Article constructs a linguistics-based framework to consider claim construction and demonstrates that the often-told story that claim construction is broken is, in fact, wrong. Rather, it is the underlying conversations that comprise the patent acquisition process that are to blame. In Part I of this Article, I use linguistics to describe the characteristics of everyday conversation, as well as how it is interpreted. In Part II, I explain what patent conversations look like and how they are similar to and different from everyday conversation. In Part III, I apply the theories of interpreting everyday conversation to patent conversation. …
