The Relationship Between The Learning Styles Of Middle School Students And The Teaching And Learning Styles Of Middle School Teachers And The Effects On Student Achievement Of Students' Learning Styles And Teachers' Learning And Teaching Styles, Vanessa Mae Morrow

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This case study of a rural West Tennessee school district examines the relationship of the learning styles of middle school students and the learning and teaching styles of middle school teachers and the effects on student achievement. With the use of the index of learning style survey (ILS), the paragon learning style inventory (PLSI), and the survey of teaching styles questionnaire, 577 students and 30 teachers were surveyed to explore if there is a relationship between the learning and teaching styles of teachers, as well as, determining if students' learning styles impact their achievement. The study finds that there is …

Deception Detection Accuracy Using Verbal Or Nonverbal Cues, Caroline Hicks, Nicole Ulvestad Jan 2011

Deception Detection Accuracy Using Verbal Or Nonverbal Cues, Caroline Hicks, Nicole Ulvestad

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

In this 2 (cue type) x 2 (statement type) two-way within-subject ANOVA design study, investigators look at the differences in average accuracy in determining whether a statement is a truth or a lie. Participants, college students, and professors from South Dakota State University, were assessed in their ability to detect deception. The participants had to determine whether a statement was a truth or a lie based on the actor’s verbal or nonverbal cues, each presented independently. The results suggest no significant effect of cue type (verbal or nonverbal) or statement type (truthful or deceitful) with participants’ accuracy being no better …

Purpose

To determine whether differences exist in biochemical disease-free survival (BDFS) and acute toxicity between African-American (AA) and non-Latino white (NLW) men with prostate cancer treated with intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT).

Methods and Materials

Between January 2000 and January 2008, 129 AA and 591 NLW men with clinically localized prostate cancer were treated with IMRT. Median follow up was 26.6 months for both groups. Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to compute rates of biochemical disease free survival. Chi-square analysis was used to compute rates of acute toxicity.

Results

No difference was found in three year biochemical disease free survival (BDFS) …

Myelomeningocele And Hydrocephalus In Uganda: The Intersection Of Culture, Supportive Care, And Long-Term Survival, Ernest Wright Jan 2011

Myelomeningocele And Hydrocephalus In Uganda: The Intersection Of Culture, Supportive Care, And Long-Term Survival, Ernest Wright

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The treatment of neurosurgical disease in the developing world presents challenges on numerous levels, not the least of which are the litany of logistical and infrastructural barriers which stand in the way of delivering care. The scarcity of neurosurgeons combined with limited mobility in developing countries requires a reconsideration of approaches to treatment; this is particularly true of ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt insertion for the treatment of hydrocephalus. While VP shunt implantation is the mainstay of treatment in the United States, it is prone to failure requiring rapid access to neurosurgical care making shunt dependency a dangerous proposition in this setting. …

Social Capital And Language Acquisition During Study Abroad, Dan P. Dewey, M Smith, Christophe G. Giraud-Carrier, D. Gore Jan 2011

Social Capital And Language Acquisition During Study Abroad, Dan P. Dewey, M Smith, Christophe G. Giraud-Carrier, D. Gore

Faculty Publications

We study the role of social capital in language acquisition during study abroad. Using data collected from 204 participants in Japanese study abroad programs, we show that students who leverage social capital through bridging relationships feel they achieve higher levels of language improvement. Furthermore, an analysis of the topics participants discuss with locals suggests that there are significant differences between students who have a tendency to build close-knit networks and students who cast a broader net.

Typothesis: A Study Of Warde's Crystal Goblet, Leeuwen's Typographic Meaning And How It Relates To The Bible, Ryan Mercer

Senior Honors Theses

The way readers interpret the written word is changing. We look for information almost as much in between the lines as we do in the words themselves. The internet and its tools offer ways for readers to engage the text like never before — can the printed word keep up? This thesis will look at the history of print through the eyes of typography and decide if multimodal methods of arranging type are appropriate or even possible in the modern book. Specifically, it will look at the Christian Bible and it’s already present use of multimodalism. This study will bring …

Divorce And A Deafening Silence: Exegesis Of Exodus 21:10-11 In The Twentieth Century, Jeffrey A. White Jan 2011

Divorce And A Deafening Silence: Exegesis Of Exodus 21:10-11 In The Twentieth Century, Jeffrey A. White

Senior Honors Theses

With the publication of his 2002 Divorce and Remarriage in the Bible, David Instone-Brewer seemed to have ignited a firestorm—within Christian circles and without—over a millennia-old issue: the biblical grounds for divorce. Given the Christian church’s pressing need to provide hope and healing for victims of divorce, Christian academia must provide an assessment of Instone-Brewer’s controversial work. One aspect of this assessment involves Instone-Brewer’s treatment of Exodus 21:10-11, the text from which he derives two grounds for divorce: emotional and material neglect. Taking as its research pool exegetical commentaries published since Keil and Delitzsch’s 1891 Commentary of the Old …

Cognitive Interference From Food Cues In Weight Loss Maintainers, Normal Weight, And Obese Individuals, Suzanne Phelan, Jason Hassenstab, Jeanne M. Mccaffery, Lawrence Sweet, Hollie A. Raynor, Ronald A. Cohen, Rena R. Wing

Kinesiology and Public Health

Much attention has been paid to the behavioral characteristics of successful weight loss maintenance, but less is known about the cognitive processes that underlie this process. The purpose of this study was to investigate cognitive interference from food-related cues in long-term weight loss maintainers (WLM; N = 15) as compared with normal weight (NW; N = 19) and obese (OB; N = 14) controls. A Food Stroop paradigm was used to determine whether successful WLM differed from controls in both the speed and accuracy of color naming words for low-calorie and high-calorie foods. A significant group × condition interaction for …

Health Literacy: A Community-Based Mixed Methods Study Of Prescription Medication Self-Management Among Community Dwelling Older Adults, Joy P. Deupree Jan 2011

Health Literacy: A Community-Based Mixed Methods Study Of Prescription Medication Self-Management Among Community Dwelling Older Adults, Joy P. Deupree

All ETDs from UAB

During the next decade, it is estimated that 7,918 Americans will turn 60 years old every day. This increase is expected to impact future health care costs. The aging population must be knowledgeable about health care needs to self-manage chronic conditions requiring multiple medications. Nearly half of all American adults have limited literacy skills. Adults at the lowest literacy levels may misunderstand instructions from a health care professional. Confusion about health care instructions can put patients at risk for adverse drug events. The purpose of this two-phase, explanatory mixed methods study was to explore how community dwelling adults ages 60 …

Which Components Of Joint Attention Are Critical For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders To Learn New Words?, Dana Smith Jan 2011

Which Components Of Joint Attention Are Critical For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders To Learn New Words?, Dana Smith

All ETDs from UAB

Though established that language deficits comprise a core element of a definitive autism diagnosis, relatively less research has been conducted to understand the bases for impaired language abilities as compared to understanding the social deficits associated with the disorder. Children with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have impoverished joint attention (JA) abilities, evidenced by their relative difficulty both in initiating bids for JA as well as responding to them. Once accepted that JA was crucial in lexical development in typically developing (TD) children, recent trends have diverged from this perspective, shedding light on JA's role in lexical development in an …

Some Like It Hot – Goblin‐Style: “Ozhivliazh” In Russian Film Translations, Alexander Burak Jan 2011

Some Like It Hot – Goblin‐Style: “Ozhivliazh” In Russian Film Translations, Alexander Burak

Russian Language Journal

This article is about English‐to‐Russian voiceover translating as a translation technique and a medium that responds to and shapes sociocultural identities. It is also about a trend in Russian film translating to enliven – in various degrees – the translation text as compared with the more neutral language in the original films. And, finally, given the multiple translations of the same cultural products, films included, it is an attempt to make a case for a strand of research and translation quality analysis that that may be called “translation variance studies.”

Translations, Retranslations, And Multiple Translations: A Case For Translation Variance Studies, Alexander Burak, Timothy Sergay Jan 2011

Translations, Retranslations, And Multiple Translations: A Case For Translation Variance Studies, Alexander Burak, Timothy Sergay

Russian Language Journal

The cluster of three related articles offered here represents what the authors propose to call “translation variance studies,” or TVS, a subfield of translation studies concerned with semantic, pragmatic, and stylistic equivalence and divergence between a single source text and its multiple translations into a specified target language. Multiple translations of a single source text into a single target language have become a widespread phenomenon. Its “ontological basis,” as Anna Muza recently observed, is “variability of solution within the target language.” All parties to translation must of necessity negotiate this variability of solution, beginning with the translator in the act …

New But Hardly Improved: Are Multiple Retranslations Of Classics The Best Cultural Use To Make Of Translation Talent?, Timothy D. Sergay Jan 2011

New But Hardly Improved: Are Multiple Retranslations Of Classics The Best Cultural Use To Make Of Translation Talent?, Timothy D. Sergay

Russian Language Journal

The notion of audio remastering seems to inform the way literary “consumers” conceive of retranslations of classic works today. This is almost certainly because the two operations—remastering and retranslation—are such natural cousins. Retranslation seems to imply, at the very least, continuous improvement of the literary product in the target language, that is, the elimination of earlier translators’ errors in construing the source text and the ever more adequate recreation of the original author’s stylistics. How close this seems to the idea of “cleaning up” an audio signal, improving the “signal‐to‐noise ratio,” enhancing fidelity—this critical term, along with loss, is common …

Великий И Могучий Олбанский Язык: The Russian Internet And The Russian Language*, Daniela S. Hristova Jan 2011

Великий И Могучий Олбанский Язык: The Russian Internet And The Russian Language*, Daniela S. Hristova

Russian Language Journal

The worldwide proliferation of the Internet as a fundamentally new media technology has coincided with a radical social and linguistic liberalization in Russia. This junction changed drastically the interrelationship between the standard language and the non‐standard language varieties. A paradigmatic manifestation of the new Russian linguistic reality is the prevalent Internet trend of alternate spellings and non‐normative lexical use. The phenomenon is frequently referred to as an “Olbanian” language and associated with the counter‐culture of the so‐called “padonki.” Disregarding the fundamental principles of Russian orthography, spelling, and even morphology, the padonki have created an idiom that seemingly allows complete freedom …

African Language Publishing For Children In South Africa: Challenges For Translators, Viv Edwards, Jacob Marriote Ngwaru Jan 2011

African Language Publishing For Children In South Africa: Challenges For Translators, Viv Edwards, Jacob Marriote Ngwaru

Institute for Educational Development, East Africa

The commitment to multilingualism embedded in the 1996 South African Constitution has wide ranging implications for many aspects of education. This paper focuses on the dearth of teaching and learning materials in African languages required to deliver effective bilingual education, and on the potential role of translation in offering solutions for this problem. Drawing on an analysis of currently available African language books for children and interviews with educators, writers, publishers, translators and organisations concerned with book promotion, it explores issues which have emerged as critical for both the quality and availability of translation. Attention is drawn to the ways …

Multilingual Education In South Africa: The Role Of Publishers, Viv Edwards, Jacob Marriote Ngwaru

Institute for Educational Development, East Africa

The South African constitution and related legislative tools provide a supportive framework for multilingual education. Successful implementation, however, requires appropriate learning materials and questions remain as to the vision and commitment of publishers to producing them. Based on an analysis of currently available books for children and interviews with publishers and key figures in the book value chain, this paper explores both the educational rationale for African language publishing and the issues that constrain expansion. These issues include the heavy dependence on the schools market in a society where the majority of the population cannot or do not buy books, …

A Study Of Turkish And English Refusal Speech Acts With A Secondary Examination For Bi-Directional Language Transferrals, Morgan Jerome Moody Jan 2011

A Study Of Turkish And English Refusal Speech Acts With A Secondary Examination For Bi-Directional Language Transferrals, Morgan Jerome Moody

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

It has been found that when students learn new languages, certain aspects of their native language can transfer to their L2 in usage and the L2 may alter the usage of the native language. One method used to examine the possibility of transfers between languages, or compare languages, is the discourse completion task (DCT). The present study examines the linguistic past of Turkey. The current study had monolingual Turkish speakers, monolingual English speakers of North America and bilingual Turkish/English individuals in Turkey as participants. The results of the present study show differences as well as similarities in the way that …
