A Low-Budget Tagger For Old Czech, Jirka Hana, Anna Feldman, Katsiaryna Aharodnik Jan 2011

A Low-Budget Tagger For Old Czech, Jirka Hana, Anna Feldman, Katsiaryna Aharodnik

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The paper describes a tagger for Old Czech (1200-1500 AD), a fusional language with rich morphology. The practical restrictions (no native speakers, limited corpora and lexicons, limited funding) make Old Czech an ideal candidate for a resource-light crosslingual method that we have been developing (e.g. Hana et al., 2004; Feldman and Hana, 2010). We use a traditional supervised tagger. However, instead of spending years of effort to create a large annotated corpus of Old Czech, we approximate it by a corpus of Modern Czech. We perform a series of simple transformations to make a modern text look more like a …

The Politics Of Practical Reason: Why Theological Ethics Must Change Your Life, Mark Ryan Jan 2011

The Politics Of Practical Reason: Why Theological Ethics Must Change Your Life, Mark Ryan

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

Ought we conceive of theological ethics as an activity that draws from a community's vision of human goodness and that has implications for the kind of person each of us is to be? Or, can students of the discipline map the ethical implications of what Christians confess about God, themselves, and the world while remaining indifferent to these claims? Habituated by modern moral theories such as consequentialism and deontology, Mark Ryan argues, we too often assume that Christian ethics makes no claim on the character of its students and teachers. It is rather like yet another department store within the …

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

Character denotes the particular set of qualities, both natural and acquired, that serves to identify a person or community. These qualities are relatively stable and will be manifest as a consistency of act~ on that can be termed "integrity." Accordingly, in the context of Christian ethics, character names an established disposition (or set of dispositions) with respect to the particular conception of the . human good exemplified by Christ. Such character ts developed over time and, as such, can be formed either toward or away from virtues, understood as those intellectual and affective habits that enable the pursuit of excellence. …

Children's Constitutional Rights, Anne Dailey Jan 2011

Children's Constitutional Rights, Anne Dailey

Faculty Articles and Papers

This Article presents a developmental theory of children’s constitutional rights that focuses on the fundamental role of children’s rights in the socialization process leading to adult autonomy. The long history of denying children the full range of constitutional rights has its roots in a choice theory of rights that understands rights as deriving from the decision-making autonomy of the individual. From the perspective of choice theory, children do not enjoy most constitutional rights because they lack the capacity for autonomous choice. Choice theory not only justifies the long history of denying children rights, but it also serves to explain the …

Some Think Of The Future: Internet, Electronic, And Telephonic Labor Representation Elections, Sara Slinn, William A. Herbert Jan 2011

Some Think Of The Future: Internet, Electronic, And Telephonic Labor Representation Elections, Sara Slinn, William A. Herbert

Saint Louis University Law Journal

Amid the scholarly dialogue regarding amending labor certification procedures, there have been calls for the adoption of Internet, electronic, and/or telephonic representation voting (“IETV”) procedures in representation elections. To date, most labor relations agencies in the United States and Canada have not implemented IETV. Three notable exceptions are the National Mediation Board (“NMB”) and the Federal Labor Relations Authority (“FLRA”) in the United States, and the Canada Industrial Relations Board (“CIRB”). This Article explores the strengths and weaknesses of IETV and the potential for wider adoption of this technology in the representation election context. The Article examines NMB’s rationale in …

The Relationship Of Canon And Messiah: The Convergence Of Jan Assmann And Walter Benjamin On A Theory Of Monotheistic Canon, Colby Dickinson Jan 2011

The Relationship Of Canon And Messiah: The Convergence Of Jan Assmann And Walter Benjamin On A Theory Of Monotheistic Canon, Colby Dickinson

Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This paper focuses upon the relationship between the German Egyptologist Jan Assmann and the German-Jewish late modern literary critic Walter Benjamin as regards the movement from canons to messianic forces. It therefore traces the evolution in Assmann’s thought from issues surrounding the processes of canonization to his development of a form of ‘weak thought’ in relation to religious violence before then turning to Benjamin’s portrayal of a ‘weak messianic force’ moving through history which is only conceivable in close proximity to a scriptural legacy and a divine (or ‘pure’) violence, as he saw it. Additionally, this essay draws a line …

Factors Associated With Fruit And Vegetable Consumption Among Caribbean Immigrants In The United States, Claudia Martin-Ayoade

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Background: There are limited data available on the fruit and vegetable consumption of Caribbean immigrants in the United States.

Purpose: To assess changes in intakes of fruits and vegetables in Caribbean immigrants while assessing knowledge of the recommended servings and barriers to intake.

Method: A cross sectional Internet questionnaire was conducted for Caribbean-born members of the social network website Cariblifecentral.com. Data were analyzed using descriptive frequencies, Pearson’s chi-square, and the Student’s t-test.

Results: Of 113 respondents, 37 reported consuming less vegetables since emigrating (p<0.10) while 29 reported eating more. However, 10.8% of respondents did not know the recommended servings for vegetables. Access to fresh produce was no barrier to consumption.

Conclusions: As this population continues to grow, it becomes necessary to tailor nutrition and disease prevention …

The Relationship Between Study Abroad And Motivation, Attitude And Anxiety In University Students Learning A Foreign Language, Stefania Gabriella Morreale Jan 2011

The Relationship Between Study Abroad And Motivation, Attitude And Anxiety In University Students Learning A Foreign Language, Stefania Gabriella Morreale

Wayne State University Dissertations

The objective of this dissertation was to discover the program effects of long- and short-term study abroad for university students at a midwestern, public university. Affective outcomes, such as motivation, attitude and anxiety, were examined using Gardner's Attitudes and Motivational Test Battery (AMTB) survey and a student demographic questionnaire. Quantitative data from the student demographic survey reported that the typical foreign language student surveyed is female, between the ages of 18-22, a junior, a liberal arts major with non-native fluency in the target language. The typical study abroad program attended by this sample is: short-term (less than eight weeks), most …

It is acknowledged that individual competencies vary between nurses and across categories of nursing professionals. The inclusion of recommendations on clinical, education, organization and policy topics makes this …

Responding To Our Own Transgressions: An Experimental Writing Study Of Repentance, Offense Rumination, Self-Justification, And Distraction, Charlotte Vanoyen-Witvliet, Nova G. Hinman, Julie J. Exline, Timothy Brandt Jan 2011

Responding To Our Own Transgressions: An Experimental Writing Study Of Repentance, Offense Rumination, Self-Justification, And Distraction, Charlotte Vanoyen-Witvliet, Nova G. Hinman, Julie J. Exline, Timothy Brandt

Faculty Publications

This between-subjects experiment focused on offender responses to their past interpersonal transgressions in self-identified Christian undergraduates (55 M, 85 F). Participants completed pre-post measures for one of four randomly assigned 20-minute writing conditions: repentance (i.e., writing about constructive sorrow, apology, restitution, behavior change), offense rumination (i.e., negative wallowing), self-justification (i.e., externalizing blame, minimizing costs), or distraction (i.e., daily details). Offense rumination and repentance writing included the most cost-oriented language; rumination had the most negative emotion language. Mixed within (pre vs. post) X between group ANOVA interactions yielded theoretically meaningful results. Repentance reduced self-condemnation and regret while increasing conciliatory motivations toward …

Boundary Work: An Interpretive Ethnographic Perspective On Negotiating And Leveraging Cross-Cultural Identity, Noriko Yagi, Jill Kleinberg Jan 2011

Boundary Work: An Interpretive Ethnographic Perspective On Negotiating And Leveraging Cross-Cultural Identity, Noriko Yagi, Jill Kleinberg

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

The complexity of global organizations highlights the importance of members’ ability to span diverse boundaries that may be defined by organization structures, national borders, and/or a variety of cultures associated with organization, nation-based societal and work cultures, industries, and/or professions. Based on ethnographic research in a Japan–US binational firm, the paper describes and analyzes the boundary role performance of the firm's Japanese members. It contributes toward theory on boundary spanning by introducing a “cultural identity negotiation” conceptual framework. We show boundary spanning as a process shaped through the interplay of the contextual issues that make a boundary problematic; an individual's …

Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research Faculty Research and Scholarship

Objective: Latin American-trained international medical graduates (IMGs) in psychiatry residency face multiple challenges that go beyond their medical training. These challenges call for innovative problem-solving. Although the professional development of IMGs has been discussed in the professional literature, little is written about their experiences. In this report, a group of IMGs reflect on their experiences and describe how they solved challenges. Method: Using cogenerative ethnography, four IMGs trained in Colombia, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico provided insights on their

challenges and solutions while adapting to psychiatric residency training. Individual interviews, focused discussion, and written reports were analyzed using data reduction, …

Privacy Analysis Of User Association Logs In A Large-Scale Wireless Lan, Keren Tan, Guanhua Yan, Jihwang Yeo, David Kotz

Computer Science Technical Reports

User association logs collected from a large-scale wireless LAN record where and when a user has used the network. Such information plays an important role in wireless network research. One concern of sharing these data with other researchers, however, is that the logs pose potential privacy risks for the network users. Today, the common practice in sanitizing these data before releasing them to the public is to anonymize users' sensitive information, such as their devices' MAC addresses and their exact association locations. In this work, we demonstrate that such sanitization measures are insufficient to protect user privacy because the differences …

Women Behind The Wheel: Gender And Transportation Law, 1860-1930, Margo Schlanger Jan 2011

Women Behind The Wheel: Gender And Transportation Law, 1860-1930, Margo Schlanger

Book Chapters

Gender difference is only infrequently mentioned in recent negligence cases. To contemporary (mostly non-essentialist) eyes, gender difference seems to appear only mildly relevant to tort law's area of concern: care and harm to others and self. But in the early days of modern tort law, when gender differences loomed larger in the consciousness of American jurists, and unabashedly so, judicial opinions more frequently grappled with how negligence doctrine ought to take account of female difference. This chapter explores opinions published between approximately 1860 and 1930 that illuminate this issue in cases involving women drivers and passengers of cars and wagons. …
