An Approach For Crosscutting Concern Identification At Requirements Level Using Nlp, B.S. Ali, Zarinah Mohd Kasirun Jan 2011

An Approach For Crosscutting Concern Identification At Requirements Level Using Nlp, B.S. Ali, Zarinah Mohd Kasirun

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Poor requirements analysis process results in incomplete software applications. Some requirements appear as scattered and tangled concerns within requirements document. Hence it is difficult to identify such requirements. A number of research approaches such as Theme/Doc, early aspects identification, information retrieval and aspects identification using UML have been developed to identify crosscutting concern at the requirements level. Nevertheless, these approaches are only supported by semiautomated tools whereby human intervention is required to achieve the desired results. This research focuses on developing a tool to automatically identify crosscutting concern at the requirements level. A model based on Theme/Doc and early aspects …

Orientalists' View On The Night Journey: An Analysis, M.R.M. Nor Jan 2011

Orientalists' View On The Night Journey: An Analysis, M.R.M. Nor

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

The Night Journey of Prophet Muhammad from al-Masjid al-Haram (al-Haram Mosque) in Makkah to al-Masjid al-Aqsa (al-Aqsa Mosque) in Islamicjerusalem has become a subject of interest for scholars in the past and at present time. They include scholars of Muslim and non-Muslim background. Among the companions of the Prophet, there are some issues of acceptance with regard to this ‘extra-ordinary’ event. Their main question is that was the Night Journey by body and soul together or was it by soul only? However, some of the orientalists scholars view that this event was a mere dream and shows the madness of …

Qualitative Experiences Of Breast Cancer Survivors On A Self-Management Intervention: 2-Year Post-Intervention, L.L. Ng

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Background: Increasing survivorship warrants evidence-based intervention to help women manage living effectively with breast cancer. Breast cancer survivors may have many medical and psychosocial issues in the post-treatment period. Qualitative research was carried out to assess survivors 19 overall experience and if intervention helps in survivorship care. This paper reports exploration of benefit-findings from participation in an earlier 4-week self management intervention. Methods: We used a grounded theory approach to analyze three focus groups conducted between May and August 2010 in Kuala Lumpur. We used random sampling to recruit the informants (n=21), all of whom had earlier participated in the …

Training Translators, K.K. Gurdial Singh

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

The researcher undertook a study of the process of translating scientific texts from English to Malay in Malaysia. Her objective was to find out the processes involved in the translation process and therefore, what instructors should know when teaching translation students who wish to practice translating in the real world. The methodology comprised both quantitative and qualitative methods i.e. a questionnaire, interviews and think-aloud protocols. This study only looked into the process of translating and not the product. Her participants comprised fifty part-time translators who took part in a questionnaire and five part-time translators of scientific texts who took part …

Models, Scientific Realism, The Intelligibility Of Nature, And Their Cultural Significance, M.H.S. Abdul Murad Jan 2011

Models, Scientific Realism, The Intelligibility Of Nature, And Their Cultural Significance, M.H.S. Abdul Murad

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

In this article, I will view realist and non-realist accounts of scientific models within the larger context of the cultural significance of scientific knowledge. I begin by looking at the historical context and origins of the problem of scientific realism, and claim that it is originally of cultural and not only philosophical, significance. The cultural significance of debates on the epistemological status of scientific models is then related to the question of ‘intelligibility’ and how science, through models, can give us knowledge of the world by presenting us with an ‘intelligible account/picture of the world’, thus fulfilling its cultural-epistemic role. …

Meaning Correlates Of Value Orientations, Shulamith Kreitler Jan 2011

Meaning Correlates Of Value Orientations, Shulamith Kreitler

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

The purpose was to explore the relations between value orientations and meaning assignment tendencies. The hypotheses were that values would be related to a certain number of meaning variables that would be similar in three cultural groups. The participants were 150 individuals of both genders living in Israel. They are from three cultural communities (50 participants each): Israeli, French, and Russian. They were administered the values inventory PQ IV by Schwartz (1992) and the Meaning Test by Kreitler and Kreitler (1990a). The relations between the values of hedonism, power, and benevolence and the meaning variables were analyzed by correlations. The …

The Perceptions Of Personality As A Function Of Speaking Rate, Jessica Braley Jan 2011

The Perceptions Of Personality As A Function Of Speaking Rate, Jessica Braley

Honors Capstones

The purpose of this study was to determine how listeners judge various attributes of a speaker based upon their perception of the speaker's speaking rate. The characteristics of interest included: intelligence, competence, physical relaxation, emotional relaxation, and employability. Speech samples were recorded for four student volunteers while describing five different pictures using a fast speaking rate, typical speaking rate, and slow speaking rate. The subjects participating in this study were from a large undergraduate class. The recorded audio samples were played to the subjects, and after each recording the subjects answered five questions using a standard scantron. Results indicated that …

Maximizing Generalization In Severe Aphasia : Script Reading Versus Scenario Training, Valerie Berg Jan 2011

Maximizing Generalization In Severe Aphasia : Script Reading Versus Scenario Training, Valerie Berg

Honors Capstones

The purpose of this study was to compare two treatment protocols, script reading (Holland, 2010) versus a novel intervention protocol, scenario training, for an individual with severe aphasia. A single-subject, multiple-baseline-across behaviors, alternating treatment design was used to determine which treatment protocol would engender the most improvement in functional expressive language. Typically, the most difficult aspect of aphasia treatment protocols - especially for those with severe aphasia - is generalization of treatment gains outside of the therapy room. Therefore, we designed scenario training to increase contextual relevance and hence generalization by rehearsing linguistic, motoric, cognitive aspects of particular situations. We …

Semi-Automatic Management Of Knowledge Bases Using Formal Ontologies, Andreas Textor Jan 2011

Semi-Automatic Management Of Knowledge Bases Using Formal Ontologies, Andreas Textor

Theses

This thesis presents an approach that deals with the ever-growing amount of data in knowledge bases, especially concerning knowledge interoperability and formal representation of domain knowledge. There arc multiple issues that must be addressed with current systems. A multitude of different formats, sources and tools exist in a domain, and it is desirable to develop their use further towards a standardised environment. Such an environment should support both the representation and processing of data from this domain, and the connection to other domains, where necessary. In order to manage large amounts of data, it should be possible to perform whatever …

Finding Film Resources: Challenges Of Formats, Policies And Intranets, Michelle Emanuel Jan 2011

Finding Film Resources: Challenges Of Formats, Policies And Intranets, Michelle Emanuel

Library Publications

As interdisciplinary cultural studies programs become increasingly prevalent in North America, many humanities-trained scholars find themselves drawn to study film from a similar perspective. Finding source materials such as copies of canon films and appropriate scholarly resources is complicated by library lending policies that do not extend to media items, or foreign films with formats different from those collected by one’s institution. This article examines such problematic issues for patrons looking for films and includes personal experiences at several research institutions in both Los Angeles and Paris, with advice and insight for the potential researcher writing about film for academic …

The Vanishing Mexicana/O: (Dis)Locating The Native In Ruiz De Burton’S 'Who Would Have Thought It?' And 'The Squatter And The Don', Tereza M. Szeghi Jan 2011

The Vanishing Mexicana/O: (Dis)Locating The Native In Ruiz De Burton’S 'Who Would Have Thought It?' And 'The Squatter And The Don', Tereza M. Szeghi

English Faculty Publications

This article complements the existing body of Ruiz de Burton scholarship by providing the first sustained examination of her literary representations of American Indians in both Who Would Have Thought It? (1872) and The Squatter and the Don (1885), and by exploring how these representations serve her broader aims of social and political reform. American Indians’ presence in the novels, however marginal, and Ruiz de Burton’s rendering of them as savage, powerless, and justly shut out from the social and political life of the nation, are critical to the author’s aims. Accounting for the absence and strategic appearance of American …

From Reading To Revering The Good Book, Or How The Word Became Fossil At The Creation Museum, Susan L. Trollinger Jan 2011

From Reading To Revering The Good Book, Or How The Word Became Fossil At The Creation Museum, Susan L. Trollinger

English Faculty Publications

Given the complexity of this sacred text and the intensity with which Protestants have sought to glean its truths from it, it is not surprising that Luther’s “dangerous idea” yielded countless splits, schisms, and sects. Whereas once there was the Church, Protestants dedication to reading the Scripture for themselves has brought an endless variety of theologies, practices, and fellowships with no end in sight. While every one of these groups claims (whether explicitly or implicitly) that they alone have the true word of God, none has been able to arrest the flow of interpretations. With everyone free to read the …
