Emancipatory Education And Democratic Politics: An Analysis Of The Sociological Imagination In A First Grade Classroom, Ellen Lin Jan 2011

Emancipatory Education And Democratic Politics: An Analysis Of The Sociological Imagination In A First Grade Classroom, Ellen Lin

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This autoethnographic research follows my personal and professional experiences as an elementary teacher reflecting upon the travails and joys that come with journeying toward a more liberating pedagogy and democratic experience along with first grade students. Braced with Freire’s 1970 summoning to resist dehumanization in society and education, I have pursued with disappointment existing democratic and humanizing trails in schools. Excited to exit one district and move to another known as “exceptional” in the region, I found myself even more limited by a tightly controlled system. Unwilling to give up hope, I began in my second year to infuse more …

Remediation And The Task Of The Translator In The Digital Age Digitally Translating Simone Schwarz-Bart's Pluie Et Vent Sur Telumee Miracle, Stacey Lynn Diliberto

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this qualitative study, I examine the utilization of electronic publication and electronic writing systems to provide new possibilities for the translation of French Caribbean literary texts. Using Simone Schwarz‐Bart's 1972 novel Pluie et vent sur Télumée Miracle specifically for analysis and exploration, I investigate the potential of digital technology to aid in the production of literary translations that are mindful not only of the dynamics of language, but of French Caribbean women's discourse as well. Since the cultural turn of translation studies, translators need not only be bilingual but bicultural as well, having a discerning knowledge and familiarity of …

“O Brave New World”: Service-Learning And Shakespeare, Matthew C. Hansen Jan 2011

“O Brave New World”: Service-Learning And Shakespeare, Matthew C. Hansen

English Literature Faculty Publications and Presentations

Community-engaged learning is a rising feature of a wide variety of higher education institutions, from community colleges to private liberal arts colleges to large public universities. Everyone, it seems, is getting in on the act, and as a result, the amount of scholarship published on service-learning continues to multiply. There remains, however, curiously little scholarship published on the intersection of service-learning and literary studies. Almost no published scholarship exists on how courses on Shakespeare – a staple of nearly every college English department – might engage with the community through service-learning that provides a genuine community benefit while simultaneously deepening …

The Social Construction Of Self, Kenneth J. Gergen Jan 2011

The Social Construction Of Self, Kenneth J. Gergen

Psychology Faculty Works

This article evaluates the view that the self is social constructed. It explains that a social constructionist approach to the self is critical insofar as it targets many of the traditional conceptions of self under discussion in this volume. It analyses the primary use of the term self in psychological and mental discourse, suggesting many ways in which the sources of knowledge about the realm of the mental are open to question. It cites the work of Michel Foucault and others who develop a sustained critique of what may be the dark side of the construction of the self as …

Relational Being In Question: A Reply To My Colleagues, Kenneth J. Gergen Jan 2011

Relational Being In Question: A Reply To My Colleagues, Kenneth J. Gergen

Psychology Faculty Works

I thank my colleagues for their generosity and their engaging reactions to my book. It is interesting, as well, to see the variations in the readings they give to the text. Churchill's initial view that I am not offering ontology is useful, as it speaks to a pervasive concern within the other commentaries that I am dismissing or dismantling cherished concepts of agency, experience, responsibility, and, indeed, physical reality. I underscore that the conception of relational being-just as these concepts-is a social construction. I do not wish to debate ontology but, rather, to explore how such constructions function, for good …

Insular Minorities: International Law’S Challenge To Japan’S Ethnic Homogeneity, Timothy Webster Jan 2011

Insular Minorities: International Law’S Challenge To Japan’S Ethnic Homogeneity, Timothy Webster

Faculty Publications

The Japanese state has long promoted a view of itself, and the country, as ethnically homogeneous. Borrowing on critical race theory as developed in the United States, this paper first traces the numerous laws and policies that Japan has implemented to privilege ethnically Japanese people, and prejudice ethnic others. Next, the paper examines the role of international human rights law in challenging various edifices of the ethno-state, including amendments to legislation, and individual lawsuits. I conclude that international law has played a meaningful role in diversifying the protective ambit of Japanese law, but cannot provide all of the solutions that …

Misconstructing Sexuality In Same-Sex Marriage Jurisprudence, Jeffrey Kosbie Jan 2011

Misconstructing Sexuality In Same-Sex Marriage Jurisprudence, Jeffrey Kosbie

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

Drawing on sociology, queer studies, and legal scholarship, this Comment develops a textual methodology to study sexuality in court opinions. In particular, this methodology uses inconsistencies between opinions to highlight how courts rely on cultural assumptions. This Comment applies this methodology to eighteen state same-sex marriage cases, identifying four analytic models of sexuality: sexuality consists only of behaviors; sexuality belongs to lesbians and gays; society should regulate sexuality; and marriage forms a normatively desirable model for sexuality. These models contribute significantly to public discourse over the meaning of sexuality. Applying sociological insights to narrow judicial models of sexuality suggests that …

Kno.e.sis Publications

With the rapid rise in the popularity of social media (500M+ Facebook users, 100M+ twitter users), and near ubiquitous mobile access (4.1 billion actively-used mobile phones), the sharing of observations and opinions has become common-place (nearly 100M tweets a day, 1.8 trillion SMSs in US last year). This has given us an unprecedented access to the pulse of a populace and the ability to perform analytics on social data to support a variety of socially intelligent applications -- be it towards targeted online content delivery, crisis management, organizing revolutions or promoting social development in underdeveloped and developing countries. This tutorial …

A Unified Framework Fro Managing Provenance Information In Translational Research, Satya S. Sahoo, Vinh Nguyen, Olivier Bodenreider, Priti Parikh, Todd Minning, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Background

A critical aspect of the NIH Translational Research roadmap, which seeks to accelerate the delivery of "bench-side" discoveries to patient's "bedside," is the management of the provenance metadata that keeps track of the origin and history of data resources as they traverse the path from the bench to the bedside and back. A comprehensive provenance framework is essential for researchers to verify the quality of data, reproduce scientific results published in peer-reviewed literature, validate scientific process, and associate trust value with data and results. Traditional approaches to provenance management have focused on only partial sections of the translational research …

Transforming Classroom Discourse And Pedagogy In Rural Zimbabwe Classrooms: The Place Of Local Culture And Mother Tongue Use, Jacob Marriote Ngwaru Jan 2011

Transforming Classroom Discourse And Pedagogy In Rural Zimbabwe Classrooms: The Place Of Local Culture And Mother Tongue Use, Jacob Marriote Ngwaru

Institute for Educational Development, East Africa

Rural African classrooms are still practicing discourses and pedagogies that contribute towards students' continued underachievement and marginalization. The use of behaviourist-based pedagogical approaches and the exclusion of learners' socio-cultural experiences including their mother tongue (MT) still characterize most classroom practices. The use of classroom discourse that severely constrains opportunities for pupil participation and the development of higher order thinking skills has also been noted. This paper describes an intervention based on the principles of transformative and constructive developmental pedagogy designed to improve approaches to teaching and learning in a primary school in rural Zimbabwe. Examples of prevailing classroom practices organized …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Outreach And Retention Methods Of Six Congregations Of The Brunswick Baptist Association, Jeffrey Gibby Jan 2011

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Outreach And Retention Methods Of Six Congregations Of The Brunswick Baptist Association, Jeffrey Gibby

Doctor of Ministry Projects

I chose two hypotheses to form a survey. The first hypothesis is that persons are reached by the style of building, existing relationships, or advertising. The second hypothesis is that persons maintain their membership based on the content of preaching, the quality of teaching programs, or fellowship.

I employed the Mann-Whitney Statistical Test to analyze the data.

The data revealed that good preaching, good worship, and good fellowship make a growing church. The data results also show the significance of the Pastor and revealed that age-graded Bible study groups are still valid in reaching and retaining members.

Variation And Change In Peruvian Spanish Word Order: Language Contact And Dialect Contact In Lima, Carol A. Klee, Daniel G. Tight, Rocio Caravedo Jan 2011

Variation And Change In Peruvian Spanish Word Order: Language Contact And Dialect Contact In Lima, Carol A. Klee, Daniel G. Tight, Rocio Caravedo

International Journal of the Linguistic Association of the Southwest

Previous studies have revealed that the direct object/verb (OV) word order typical of Quechua and Aymara is also prevalent in Andean Spanish. The current study examines the frequency of such structures in Lima, Peru, where massive migration over the past 60 years has brought speakers of Andean indigenous languages and rural Andean Spanish into close contact with speakers of limeño Spanish. Goldvarb analysis of data from 34 participants (seven first-generation migrants, six 1.5-generation migrants, 10 second-generation migrants, and 11 native limeños) indicates that the pragmatic functions that motivated OV order among the participants include those found in noncontact varieties of …

Dialects And Borders: Face-To-Face And Back-To-Back In Latin American Spanish, John M. Lipski Jan 2011

Dialects And Borders: Face-To-Face And Back-To-Back In Latin American Spanish, John M. Lipski

International Journal of the Linguistic Association of the Southwest

This essay explores a relatively underrepresented facet of Latin American Spanish, namely dialect contact along national borders. It is well known that Spanish American dialect zones rarely coincide with national boundaries, but also that prevailing dialectal traits often evoke nationalistic sentiments. The extent to which these tendencies interact is explored through a series of vignettes involving speech communities along the borders between nations whose principal (e.g. capital city) dialect traits differ substantially. Among the proposed factors that influence linguistic behavior in border communities are physical and political ease of border crossing, inter-nation economic imbalances, proximity of major urban areas, trans-border …

A Model For Determining The Degree Of Contradictions In Information, Ram Gopal Raj, Vimala Balakrishnan Jan 2011

A Model For Determining The Degree Of Contradictions In Information, Ram Gopal Raj, Vimala Balakrishnan

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Conversational systems are gaining popularity rapidly. Consequently, the believability of the conversational systems or chatterbots is becoming increasingly important. Recent research has proven that learning chatterbots tend to be rated as being more believable by users. Based on Raj's Model for Chatterbot Trust, we present a model for allowing chatterbots to determine the degree of contradictions in contradictory statements when learning thereby allowing them to potentially learn more accurately via a form of discourse. Some information that is learnt by a chatterbot may be contradicted by other information presented subsequently. Choosing correctly which information to use is critical in chatterbot …

A Pattern Based Approach For The Derivation Of Base Forms Of Verbs From Participles And Tenses For Flexible Nlp, R.G. Raj, S. Abdul-Kareem Jan 2011

A Pattern Based Approach For The Derivation Of Base Forms Of Verbs From Participles And Tenses For Flexible Nlp, R.G. Raj, S. Abdul-Kareem

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is an integral part of a conversation and by proxy an integral part of a chatterbot. Building a complete vocabulary for a chatterbot is a prohibitively time and effort intensive endeavor and thus makes a learning chatterbot a much more efficient alternative. Learning can be performed from many facets including individual words to phrases and concepts. From the perspective of words, the grammatical parts of speech become important since they allow meaning and structure to be derived from a sentence. Verbs tend to be unique since they have different forms, namely participles and tenses. As such …

An Approach For Crosscutting Concern Identification At Requirements Level Using Nlp, B.S. Ali, Zarinah Mohd Kasirun Jan 2011

An Approach For Crosscutting Concern Identification At Requirements Level Using Nlp, B.S. Ali, Zarinah Mohd Kasirun

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Poor requirements analysis process results in incomplete software applications. Some requirements appear as scattered and tangled concerns within requirements document. Hence it is difficult to identify such requirements. A number of research approaches such as Theme/Doc, early aspects identification, information retrieval and aspects identification using UML have been developed to identify crosscutting concern at the requirements level. Nevertheless, these approaches are only supported by semiautomated tools whereby human intervention is required to achieve the desired results. This research focuses on developing a tool to automatically identify crosscutting concern at the requirements level. A model based on Theme/Doc and early aspects …

Orientalists' View On The Night Journey: An Analysis, M.R.M. Nor Jan 2011

Orientalists' View On The Night Journey: An Analysis, M.R.M. Nor

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

The Night Journey of Prophet Muhammad from al-Masjid al-Haram (al-Haram Mosque) in Makkah to al-Masjid al-Aqsa (al-Aqsa Mosque) in Islamicjerusalem has become a subject of interest for scholars in the past and at present time. They include scholars of Muslim and non-Muslim background. Among the companions of the Prophet, there are some issues of acceptance with regard to this ‘extra-ordinary’ event. Their main question is that was the Night Journey by body and soul together or was it by soul only? However, some of the orientalists scholars view that this event was a mere dream and shows the madness of …

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

The researcher undertook a study of the process of translating scientific texts from English to Malay in Malaysia. Her objective was to find out the processes involved in the translation process and therefore, what instructors should know when teaching translation students who wish to practice translating in the real world. The methodology comprised both quantitative and qualitative methods i.e. a questionnaire, interviews and think-aloud protocols. This study only looked into the process of translating and not the product. Her participants comprised fifty part-time translators who took part in a questionnaire and five part-time translators of scientific texts who took part …

Models, Scientific Realism, The Intelligibility Of Nature, And Their Cultural Significance, M.H.S. Abdul Murad Jan 2011

Models, Scientific Realism, The Intelligibility Of Nature, And Their Cultural Significance, M.H.S. Abdul Murad

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

In this article, I will view realist and non-realist accounts of scientific models within the larger context of the cultural significance of scientific knowledge. I begin by looking at the historical context and origins of the problem of scientific realism, and claim that it is originally of cultural and not only philosophical, significance. The cultural significance of debates on the epistemological status of scientific models is then related to the question of ‘intelligibility’ and how science, through models, can give us knowledge of the world by presenting us with an ‘intelligible account/picture of the world’, thus fulfilling its cultural-epistemic role. …
