Reading Fluency Measurements In Efa Fti Partner Countries : Outcomes And Improvement Prospects, Helen Abadzi

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications - Archive

Students in lower-income countries often acquire limited literacy in school and often drop out illiterate. For those who stay, the problem is not detected until it is too late to intervene. Oral reading fluency tests given in the early grades can quickly and inexpensively assess student literacy. For this reason, one-minute reading studies have been popular. A search carried out in early 2010 showed that over 50 fluency studies have been conducted in various countries, and that norms have been established in the U.S., Mexico, and Chile. The studies often reported data in ways that were not easily comparable, and …

The Right To Free, Prior, And Informed Consent: Indigenous Peoples' Participation Rights Within International Law, Tara Ward

Northwestern Journal of Human Rights

The right of indigenous peoples to free, prior, and informed consent (FPIC) in relation to development, infrastructure, and resource extraction projects is currently being debated within international law. Particularly contentious is the question of whether the right to FPIC is an existing customary international legal principle and if so, whether this constitutes a full veto right for the affected peoples. This article examines this question by analyzing the development of FPIC within international law and applying the current international standards to two distinct case studies. The first is the Lubicon Cree in Alberta, Canada, and the second is that of …

Discovering The Potential Of Service Learning In Perugia, Italy: An Evaluation Of The Umbra Institute’S La Famiglia Italiana Project, Julie Falk

Capstone Collection

Today, American study abroad programs are increasingly shifting their focus to students’ community engagement efforts, one approach of which is service learning (Stone, 2008). Service learning principles and approach, however, are not always quickly and easily transported into other cultures. As an American pedagogical export, service learning in the study abroad context has the potential to overlook essential factors such as reciprocity, sustainability, and evaluation of student, faculty, and community partner experiences. This type of learning remains unexplored territory in many countries including Italy (Tosi, 2000). As the only American study abroad program of its kind in Perugia, Italy, The …

Vermont-based SIT Study Abroad is a service provider in over 40 countries offering study abroad programs to undergraduate students. New trends in the study abroad field have driven some of the focus of study abroad participation from the junior year abroad to first-year undergraduate students. While higher education institutions push for more students to study abroad, limited resources and the desire for a wider variety of program types lead them to third-party providers such as SIT Study Abroad. This capstone paper examines the new focus on first-year undergraduates and the necessity for SIT Study Abroad to offer customized programs to …

As the number of international students increases, it becomes more crucial to have a structure in place to support these students, especially as they encounter many adjustment issues. Institutions can play a major …

Maize And Stone A Functional Analysis Of The Manos And Metates Of Santa Rita Corozal, Belize, Lisa Glynns Duffy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The manos and metates of Santa Rita Corozal, Belize are analyzed to compare traditional maize-grinding types to the overall assemblage. A reciprocal, back-and-forth grinding motion is the most efficient way to process large amounts of maize. However, rotary movements are also associated with some ground stone implements. The number of flat and trough metates and two handed manos are compared to the rotary-motion basin and concave type metates and one-handed manos to determine predominance and distribution. Flat is the predominant type and, together with the trough type, these grinding stones make up the majority of metates at the site. Manos …

Trading Culture: Practical Background For Azerbaijani-English Poetry Translation, Alison Mandaville, Shahla Naghiyeva

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Examining the translation of poetry from Azerbaijani to English, two very different languages and poetic traditions, the authors discuss key linguistic, political, cultural considerations and demonstrate some effective practical strategies. They approach translation as a fundamentally human endeavor and the work of a translator as cultural and linguistic exchange and enrichment, even commerce.

However, there are formidable historical, socio-cultural, ethnic, and linguistic ties that bind all Azerbaijanis together as one people. This necessity of coming together finds its highest expression in Diaspora and among the Azeri émigrés. In the process, the Azeri Diaspora experiences a host …

Romanian Immigrant Travel Routes To America, Mihaela Mudure Jan 2011

Romanian Immigrant Travel Routes To America, Mihaela Mudure

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

This paper claims the existence of various immigrant travel routes in American literature. The literary argumentation relies on Domnica Radulescu and her first novel Train to Trieste and on Alta Ifland‘s collection of short stories Elegy for a Fabulous Land. Both writers were born in Romania and were confronted with totalitarianism and its impositions upon individual identity. Travel and mobility have shaped the identities of these two writers in decisive ways which draw the contours of an emerging hyphenated ethnic literature: Romanian-American literature.

In particular, the post-Dayton public sphere has been dominated by ethno-nationalist political elites which are doing everything to exclude non-nationalists and members of minority groups from the decision-making process. This is a clear paradox since one of the main objectives behind the integration of the European countries into the European Community was to reduce disintegrative and dangerous influences of nationalists and establish a peaceful, prosperous, and secure community. In this article, we analyze the process of the post-Dayton ethno-nationalization resulting in a widespread discrimination against the so-called …

'Race', Nation And Belonging In Ireland, Jonathan Mitchell Jan 2011

'Race', Nation And Belonging In Ireland, Jonathan Mitchell

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

Despite consistent efforts to counteract those attitudes and practices that give rise to it, most putatively modern Western nations continue to experience the concrete effects of racial discrimination. This essay argues that nationality is all too easily conflated with ‘race’ or ethnicity, such that a seeming essence or givenness is manifested amongst all those within a particular geographic boundary. It is suggested that on the contrary, there is nothing natural about nationality as commonly understood; this being so, it must be continually shored up and reconstituted through social, linguistic and material practices. For modern nations in the West, this has …
