Beggars Can't Be Choosers Or The Refugee As A Moral Agent?, Pamela Cartier Allen Apr 2011

Beggars Can't Be Choosers Or The Refugee As A Moral Agent?, Pamela Cartier Allen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This project considers the ways in which the dominant discourse on refugees might reinforce the negative impacts or limit the positive impacts of aid. Care for refugees is a difficult task that takes place in a discourse that begins with numerical calculi, a language that expresses ambivalence about our obligations for this category of persons, fear of their collective identity, and a deep ceded notion of refugees as an object of concern, a worthy cause, a growing problem, and a burden that must be shared.

What we choose to do for and about refugees emerge from our present awareness (knowledge) …

Amitav Ghosh And The Aesthetic Turn In Postcolonial Studies, John Su Apr 2011

Amitav Ghosh And The Aesthetic Turn In Postcolonial Studies, John Su

English Faculty Research and Publications

This essay explores the "aesthetic turn" in postcolonial studies in light of the literary works of Indo-Burmese author Amitav Ghosh. While a renewed interest in aesthetic theories is apparent throughout the humanities in the past decade, it is particularly striking in postcolonial studies, where it holds out the possibility of blending the materialist/historicist and culturalist/textualist strands of postcolonial scholarship. Recent studies by Deepika Bahri, Nicholas Brown, Ato Quayson and others have been enormously promising; this essay argues for bringing their Frankfurt School-influenced aesthetic theories into conversation with other theories of aesthetics. Particular attention in this essay is given to the …

Educating Teachers About The Complex Writing Processes Of Preschool Students (Project), Mary Kathleen Barrett Apr 2011

Educating Teachers About The Complex Writing Processes Of Preschool Students (Project), Mary Kathleen Barrett

Honorable Mentions

Preschool teachers traditionally view young children’s written literacy development as a linear continuum that progresses from making scribbles, to lines, to letter strings, to invented, and finally, conventional spellings on paper. This project seeks to change preschool teachers’ perceptions of children’s writing development to encompass a more broadened definition of literacy. On the path from emergent to conventional writing, young children naturally negotiate and mediate a number of symbol systems in order to make sense of their worlds and create meaning as they come to understand the complexities and intricacies of the writing process. Exploration of these symbol systems is …

Investigating The World Of Mathematics To Uncover How Language Proficiency Influences English Language Learners Performance On High Stakes Tests (Thesis), Deborah Elizabeth Schuitema Apr 2011

Investigating The World Of Mathematics To Uncover How Language Proficiency Influences English Language Learners Performance On High Stakes Tests (Thesis), Deborah Elizabeth Schuitema

Award Winners

English language learners (ELLs) must take the mathematics portion of state standardized tests regardless of their time spent in U.S. schools. This practice follows the misconception that mathematics is a ‘universal language’ and less language dependant, however, a significant performance gap between non-ELLs and ELLs on high stakes mathematics tests persists and must be addressed. In order to investigate the impact of language proficiency on high stakes test performance a cross-sectional study was conducted. The study included item performance data, by group, for 24,693 seventh and eighth grade students who took the 2007 and/or the 2008 mathematics Michigan Education Assessment …

Development And Design Of A Merged Secondary And Special Education Teacher Preparation Program, Ann Fullerton, Barbara Ruben, Stephanie Mcbride, Susan Bert

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications and Presentations

As middle and secondary classrooms become increasingly inclusive, some special educators may not be prepared to teach content, and some general educators may not be prepared to address diverse learning needs. This mismatch between the reality of today's schools and traditional teacher preparation has led to the development of new models for teacher education that integrate or merge special education and general education. Integrated and merged models are two approaches to combining special and general education pedagogy for teacher education. In merged programs, faculty in general and special education collaborate to develop one program in which all candidates receive licensure …

Strategies Teachers Can Use To Help Support Comprehension In Struggling Readers, Katie Steubing Apr 2011

Strategies Teachers Can Use To Help Support Comprehension In Struggling Readers, Katie Steubing

Education Masters

This study was completed to provide the benefits of using comprehension strategies for struggling readers. The strategy that was mainly focused on in this study was using predicting to help enhance the reader’s comprehension. The research was conducted by working with a student one-on-one, using questionnaires, direct instruction, modeling expected behaviors, and allowing the student to complete tasks independently. The finding suggest that using strategies, such as predicting, help students not only gain a better understanding of what they are reading, but help build confidence in their abilities to read.

Disproportionality Of African American Students In Special Education, Maurice M. Young Apr 2011

Disproportionality Of African American Students In Special Education, Maurice M. Young

Education Masters

Many students primarily those in the urban school districts are at risk of dropping out or not achieving their true academic potential. The school district used for this study, which is the poorest district of the recognized 5 biggest districts in New York State, has a dropout rate well below the statewide average (T. Harris, personal communication, March 18, 2011). The performance of its schools amounts to a barometer for the success of the city and the region. Who’s to blame? The teachers, the parents, administrators or state and federal officials who generate and promote funding and programs to the …

An Analysis Of Teachers’ Discourse And Their Perceptions Concerning The Use Of Questioning And Feedback During Reading Instruction In Third-Grade Classrooms, Jennifer C. Farist

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

The purpose of this study was to investigate teacher talk during elementary reading instruction. The study was designed to gain insight into existing discourse patterns and to attempt to understand how change in these patterns might be facilitated. The design of the study evolved after a review of existing literature on the topic of teacher talk indicated a lack of widespread, intentional focus on classroom discourse and its potential impact on student learning.

Qualitative methods were used to capture the language used by third-grade teachers during read aloud instruction. Data sources included audio recordings of lessons and teacher interviews. These …

Signifyin' Black Power: Soul On Ice And The Subversion Of Normative Whiteness, James David Fife Apr 2011

Signifyin' Black Power: Soul On Ice And The Subversion Of Normative Whiteness, James David Fife

Theses and Dissertations

This study emphasizes the methodology of linguistic resistance in Eldridge Cleaver's best-known work, Soul on Ice. Through a process of signification, Cleaver works to redefine key words and concepts that form a web of racialist and racist thinking called normative whiteness. By emptying key terms, like those of "life," "liberty," and "property," Cleaver's text attempts to offer a new, less biased foundation on which a more inclusive and pluralistic American narrative can be written, a move that both makes his rhetoric significantly different from that of many contemporary resistance writers and positions him as an important link in a …

Modeling Teacher Ratings Of Online Resources: A Human-Machine Approach To Quality, Mimi Recker, Heather Leary, Andrew Walker, Anne R. Diekama, Philipp Wetzler, Tamara Sumner, James Martin

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

In education, the scalable deployment of media-rich online resources supports peer production in ways that promise to radically transform teaching and learning (CRA, 2005; Pea et al., 2008). Online educational repositories such as the Digital Library for Earth Systems Education (DLESE.org) and the National Science Digital Library (NSDL.org) collect and curate online learning resources created for a wide range of educational audiences and subject areas (McArthur & Zia, 2008). Through a simple, web-based authoring tool, called the Instructional Architect (IA.usu.edu) teachers locate and share educational resources and activities in an IA project. These IA projects can then be viewed, copied, …

Assessing The Regulation Of Temporary Foreign Workers In Canada, Sarah Marsden Apr 2011

Assessing The Regulation Of Temporary Foreign Workers In Canada, Sarah Marsden

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

There has been an increase in the number of incoming temporary migrant workers to Canada over the past decade. In this article, I critically assess recent changes in the law governing temporary migration to Canada by using theoretical tools from the fields of sociology, geography, and legal geography. A multidisciplinary framework to understand Canada's labour migration policies is provided. Within the socio-historical context of migrant labour regulation in Canada, I argue that political and regulatory developments function to further entrench segregation and exclusion of foreign workers by maintaining a subclass of flexible labour. Specifically, I show that Canada's current temporary …

This study evaluated the overall reading achievement of African American (n = 42) and White (n = 21) sixth grade students in an urban Midwestern school, after their teachers‘ engaged in culturally proficiency training provided by The Minnesota Humanities Center. Data for students in the study was collected for comprehension levels or acuity (CTB/McGraw-Hill, 2010), text gradient levels (Fountas & Pinnell, 2008), and oral fluency levels (Berglund & Johns, 2006; Fountas & Pinnell, 2008) during year two of their teachers‘ participation in the training.
