Correcting 60 Years Of Development Failure: The Potential Of Scaling Up In Addressing Development Ineffectiveness, Jossif Ezekilov Apr 2011

Correcting 60 Years Of Development Failure: The Potential Of Scaling Up In Addressing Development Ineffectiveness, Jossif Ezekilov

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

For more than 60 years, development organizations have poured billions of dollars of aid money into developing countries with the hopes that their projects will increase economic growth, reduce poverty, and improve the health status of people in developing countries. Yet, the result has been one of general failure; despite 2 trillion dollars worth of aid money delivered by organizations, there is little progress to show for it. In some cases, development projects have even caused more harm to a developing country than good. The ineffective,” top down” approach of the last 60 years must be ceased and a new …

Finding A Cure In The Courts: A Private Right Of Action For Disparate Impact In Health Care, Sarah G. Steege Apr 2011

Finding A Cure In The Courts: A Private Right Of Action For Disparate Impact In Health Care, Sarah G. Steege

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

There is no comprehensive civil rights statute in health care comparable to the Fair Housing Act, Title VII, and similar laws that have made other aspects of society more equal. After Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title VI served this purpose for suits based on race, color, and national origin for almost four decades. Since the Supreme Court's 2001 ruling in Alexander v. Sandoval, however, there has been no private right of action for disparate impact claims under Title VI, and civil rights enforcement in health care has suffered as a result. Congress has passed new legislation …

Dancing Through Life: Symmetry And Balance Within Dance And The Form Of Jane Austen's Novels, Elizabeth Ellen Jones Apr 2011

Dancing Through Life: Symmetry And Balance Within Dance And The Form Of Jane Austen's Novels, Elizabeth Ellen Jones

Masters Theses

This thesis looks at the presence of symmetry and balance in Jane Austen's novels, especially as it is realized through period dance. In the Georgian period, the ideas of symmetry were an important aspect of both the political and aesthetic culture. Likewise, dance, often used as metaphor for courtship, reflected this societal emphasis on order and balance. As such, symmetry and its related principles, namely balance, repetition and order, are all principle themes expressed through patterns of dance in Austen's novels.

The first chapter briefly addresses Jane Austen's social position within the Regency era and her view of daily life …

Palliative Nursing Care In Pediatric Oncology, Hannah K. Reynolds Apr 2011

Palliative Nursing Care In Pediatric Oncology, Hannah K. Reynolds

Senior Honors Theses

Palliative care is an integral part of providing adequate care for pediatric oncology patients. Whether the cancer is terminal or treatable, palliative care helps patients live their lives to the fullest by improving quality of life. Therefore, it is important to have a system to define and measure quality of life. Once quality of life can be quantitatively measured, nurses can use pain and symptom relief, psychosocial support, and spiritual care to improve it.

Pain management is essential to cancer recovery. Relief can be achieved through pharmacological or nonpharmacological methods; however, prophylactic pain relief is most beneficial. This means that …

Speaking Up: Opening Dialogue With Pre-Service And In-Service Teachers About Reading Children’S Books Inclusive Of Lesbian And Gay Families, Teresa M. Bouley

Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education

One of the best ways to include all family structures in classroom practice is through children‘s literature. While more and more quality books depicting family diversity, inclusive of gay and lesbian families, are published every year, it is often the unknown discourse surrounding such readings and the unknown support of the teacher that keeps these books from even entering preschool through grade four classrooms.

African-Born Immigrants In U.S. Schools: An Intercultural Perspective On Schooling And Diversity, Immaculee Harushimana, Janet Awokoya Apr 2011

African-Born Immigrants In U.S. Schools: An Intercultural Perspective On Schooling And Diversity, Immaculee Harushimana, Janet Awokoya

Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education

Despite the significant increase of African-born immigrants in the United States of America, the education system does not recognize their presence and does little to facilitate their integration through the implementation of necessary curricular adjustments. The purpose of this article is to call on multicultural education advocates to endorse the argument for the distinctness of African-born immigrants as a complex cultural group with unique vulnerabilities requiring sensitivity. Organizationally, the paper develops four key points: the current demographic representation of the African population; the absence of African voices in multicultural education scholarship; the salience of multicultural education advocacy in recognizing the …

The Politics Of Caring In A Bilingual Classroom: A Case Study On The (Im)Possibilities Of Critical Care In An Assimilationist School Context, Charise Pimentel Apr 2011

The Politics Of Caring In A Bilingual Classroom: A Case Study On The (Im)Possibilities Of Critical Care In An Assimilationist School Context, Charise Pimentel

Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education

By juxtaposing colorblind and critical approaches to caring, the author suggests there is often a disjuncture between teachers‘ caring practices and those that students of color and/or language minorities may expect of their teachers. While critical care may provide the foundation for equitable practices, the author warns against idealizing critical care. The author makes a case that all classroom practices, including pedagogies of care, must be contextualized in larger social and political power dynamics that often shape the (im)possibilities of caring. The article includes a case study of a fourth and fifth grade dual language bilingual teacher, wherein the author …

Faculty Publications

Purpose: In this study, the authors examined the linguistic profile of African American English (AAE)-speaking children reared in poverty by focusing on their marking of passive participles and by comparing the results with the authors' previous study of homophonous forms of past tense (S. Pruitt & J. Oetting, 2009). Method: The data were from 45 five- to six-year-olds who spoke AAE and who participated in the authors' earlier study. Fifteen were classified as low-income (LSES); the others were classified as middle-income and served as either age- or language-matched controls. The data came from a probe that was designed by S. …

BYU Studies

The 2009 publication of the Manuscript Revelation Books as part of the Joseph Smith Papers makes available, for the first time, the text of a revelation received in 1829 or 1830 by the Prophet Joseph Smith on securing the copyright of the Book of Mormon in all the world and selling a copyright for its publication in the four then-existing provinces of Canada. This revelation, commonly referred to as the Canadian copyright revelation, designated four of Joseph's associates to travel to Kingston, Upper Canada, to sell a copyright of the Book of Mormon. A group did travel to Kingston, but …

Etsu Today - Spring 2011, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University

ETSU Today [magazine]

On Monday, October 2, 1911, 29 students arrived at a place that had been, only a few years earlier, a piece of farmland. They were the first to enroll at East Tennessee State Normal School. Some sought credentials for teaching; others entered the new field of domestic science in the hope of becoming better homemakers. They took a chance, these pioneering 29. Some gave up jobs. Some abandoned chores on the family farm. They were uncertain about what they would find on this campus where cows had once grazed. Its state appropriation for operation and maintenance was under $36,000 for …

Comparing Nearly Identical Treaty Texts: A Note On The Treaty Of Fort Laramie With Sioux, Etc., 1851 And Levenshtein’S Edit Distance Metric, Charles D. Bernholz, Brian L. Pytlik Zillig Apr 2011

Comparing Nearly Identical Treaty Texts: A Note On The Treaty Of Fort Laramie With Sioux, Etc., 1851 And Levenshtein’S Edit Distance Metric, Charles D. Bernholz, Brian L. Pytlik Zillig

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Vladimir Levenshtein’s edit distance algorithm is used to reveal disparities between delimiter stripped texts of the Senate amended Treaty of Fort Laramie with Sioux, etc., 1851 as corrected in a previous study, and of other federal copies of this transaction. All of the latter deviated markedly from that newly created version, reflecting errors of exclusion, of the absence in some transcripts of the Senate modification, of editorial decisions made by Charles J. Kappler during the preparation of his treaty compilations at the beginning of the twentieth century, and of spelling. These results confirmed that the instrument was until now …

Representations Of L2 Motivational Self System With Beginning Chinese Language Learners At College Level In The United States: Heritage And Nonheritage Language Learners, Yan Xie

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Dornyei (2005) proposed the L2 motivational self system in response to the need to develop the socioeducational model. This study further tests the validation of the L2 motivational self system by investigating beginning Chinese language learners at the college level in the United States. A questionnaire combining two published questionnaires was administered to 197 subjects, including heritage language learners and nonheritage language learners, and compared the motivational representations of the two types of learners. This is the first study to test the L2 motivational self system by investigating learners of a language other than English. Through a correlation analysis, the …

The Need To Create Culturally Responsive Teachers: Implications For Teacher Education Programs, Cass Griffin Apr 2011

The Need To Create Culturally Responsive Teachers: Implications For Teacher Education Programs, Cass Griffin

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research

Using nine reflections as a centerpiece, this thesis aims is to inform readers about the power that an international travel experience and/or practica in dual-language environments can have in becoming a more effective teacher, a culturally responsive teacher.  From personal experience in a both settings, I think I am now better able to relate to students with culturally or linguistically diverse backgrounds because I have been in a similar situation. Students with diverse backgrounds (that are different from their teacher) may have extra difficulty communicating or expressing their thoughts and ideas. Teachers need to recognize these difficulties and respond appropriately …

Every Parent’S Worst Nightmare: Myths Of Child Abductions In Us News, Spring-Serenity Duvall, Leigh Moscowitz Apr 2011

Every Parent’S Worst Nightmare: Myths Of Child Abductions In Us News, Spring-Serenity Duvall, Leigh Moscowitz

Faculty Publications

Through a content analysis, this study seeks to uncover the predominant narrative themes centered on gender and class that shaped mainstream U.S. newspaper coverage of child kidnappings from 2000-2003. The abductions that dominated news coverage were neither random nor representative cases; clear patterns emerged in the kidnappings that garnered the most media attention. Though statistically rare, the news media disproportionally covered stories of young Caucasian girls being snatched from their middle-to-upper class homes by male strangers, manufacturing a nationwide epidemic. Our analysis reveals how gender and class were used to construct vulnerable girl victims and predatory male perpetrators. News narratives …
