Language Policy And Planning For Education In Cameroon And Nigeria, Ruth Adebile Apr 2011

Language Policy And Planning For Education In Cameroon And Nigeria, Ruth Adebile

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The goals and overall philosophy of education in any nation is the pre-requisite to the formation of language policy and planning for education. Language generally is always a crucial phenomenon and it becomes more crucial and controversial when it has to do with formulation of policies in education (Dada, 2005) part of the reason for this is simply because most of the language problems in many African countries are colonial legacies. The language problem is even volatile in some African countries like Cameroon and Nigeria. As it is going to be expanciated in this write-up, both Cameroon and Nigeria are …

Literary Creativity In Second Language English: A Speech Act Study Of Ola Rotimi’S Ovonrawmen Nogbaisi, M.J. Oloko

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Language remains the most formidable tool that writers use for literary creativity. It is the vehicle through which literature delights and instructs. The most important gift God gave human beings over and above other creatures he created is the power of language (Ezeigbo 2008). Language is indispensable to the creative artists, to literary critics, who must have a facility for words. Words are no doubt a powerful tool in the literary arsenal of the writer. In the hands of a writer, words can do a lot of things. Writers are creative people who create with words. It is no longer …

Eliminating Health Discrepancies: Insights Through Free Market Or State Control, A. Singh, Bharathi Purohit Apr 2011

Eliminating Health Discrepancies: Insights Through Free Market Or State Control, A. Singh, Bharathi Purohit

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Healthcare inequality or healthcare disparity refers to the differences in the quality of health and health care across different populations. This may include differences in the prevalence of disease, health outcomes, or access to health care across racial, ethnic, gender, and socioeconomic groups. Differences among populations in the presence of disease and health outcomes are well documented in many areas. In the United States, disparities are well documented in minority populations such as African Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans, and Latinos, with these groups having higher incidence of chronic diseases, higher mortality, and poorer overall health outcomes. For example, the …

Vulnerability, Risk Perception, And Health Profile Of Marginalized People Exposed To Multiple Built-Environment Stressors In Worcester, Massachusetts: A Pilot Project, Timothy Downs, Laurie Ross, Robert Goble, Rajendra Subedi, Sara Greenberg, Octavia Taylor

Sustainability and Social Justice

Millions of low-income people of diverse ethnicities inhabit stressful old urban industrial neighborhoods. Yet we know little about the health impacts of built-environment stressors and risk perceptions in such settings; we lack even basic health profiles. Difficult access is one reason (it took us 30 months to survey 80 households); the lack of multifaceted survey tools is another. We designed and implemented a pilot vulnerability assessment tool in Worcester, Massachusetts. We answer: (1) How can we assess vulnerability to multiple stressors? (2) What is the nature of complex vulnerability-including risk perceptions and health profiles? (3) How can findings be used …

"The Second Bakery Attack" is a short story written by Haruki Murakami, published in 1989 as the first story in a collection ofthe same name. Two Weeks At The Old Bailey: Jury Lessons From England, Nancy S. Marder Apr 2011

Two Weeks At The Old Bailey: Jury Lessons From England, Nancy S. Marder

Chicago-Kent Law Review

I spent two weeks observing jury trials and interviewing judges and barristers at the Old Bailey in London. There were several jury practices at the Old Bailey that would benefit American jurors, such as providing them with a "jury bundle," and we should introduce such practices in the United States. There are other practices, such as eliminating peremptory challenges, which are worth adopting over time because there would be some initial resistance. There are many practices that the two systems share in common, such as allowing jurors to take notes, to ask questions of witnesses, and to have a written …

Analysis Of The Dutar Playing Technique Of Abdurehim Heyt, Michael Alan Kee

Masters Theses

Uyghur dutar player Abdurehim Heyt is hailed by many Uyghurs as the Dutar King, referring to his mastery of the instrument. This thesis examines several of Heyt's songs and compares them with songs from three other Uyghur dutar players in an attempt to isolate and define the unique characteristic of Heyt's dutar playing technique that sets him apart from other Uyghur dutar players.

This study presents a brief examination of the concept of music ornamentation as it has developed in the West. The Uyghur concept of music ornamentation - purakh - is then explained and compared with the Western concept …

"I Hear America Singing": An Approach To Poetry's Coalescent Intricacies Of Sound, Structure, And Content, Meagan Ashleigh Brooks Apr 2011

"I Hear America Singing": An Approach To Poetry's Coalescent Intricacies Of Sound, Structure, And Content, Meagan Ashleigh Brooks

Masters Theses

Poetry, because it is an art form, is compared to other arts such as painting and even architecture, but because the elements of poetry evince musical qualities, the comparison between poetry and music merits a greater degree of attention. While analyzing the musical elements of poetry is a fascinating study on its own, the purpose of analyzing the two art forms is to develop a greater understanding of each work as a whole. This includes understanding not only the the sum of the parts but also what is achieved beyond the sum. Although some elements of poetry are parallel to …

Resistance Meets Spirituality In Academia: "I Prayed On It!", Vonzell Agosto, Zorka Karanxha Apr 2011

Resistance Meets Spirituality In Academia: "I Prayed On It!", Vonzell Agosto, Zorka Karanxha

Educational Leadership and Policy Studies Faculty Publications

We describe the lived experiences of a Black Woman educational leader who has studied and worked in the academy and in the field of K-12 education. This partial life history, excavated through the tenets of Critical Race Theory (CRT), illuminates the social construction of race and the pervasiveness and permanence of racism. We determined through a series of interviews that the participant's resilient resistance is guided by critical spirituality so that circumstances and people who challenge her also confront this source of power. Her lived experience, from student to faculty member, conveys the challenges and opportunities she faces and adds …

The Bilingual Student Experience, Whitney Washousky Apr 2011

The Bilingual Student Experience, Whitney Washousky

Global Studies Student Scholarship

English language learners (ELLs) are the fastest growing group of students in the United States. The purpose of this research is to help better understand the personal experiences of these students in their journey to learn English while still maintaining their Spanish roots. Much research has been done on a large scale to identify the successes and shortcomings of the American education system in supporting these immigrant ELLs. This project, however, focuses directly on the personal experience of the bilingual student in the mainstream classroom and the influence of their home and community life on the assimilation process. This case …

Romanticism, Language, And The Vox Popul: A Sociolinguistic Analysis Of Wordsworth And Whitman, Jeff Everhart Apr 2011

Romanticism, Language, And The Vox Popul: A Sociolinguistic Analysis Of Wordsworth And Whitman, Jeff Everhart

Theses & Honors Papers

This thesis analyzes the works of Wordsworth and Whitman, focusing on the manifestations of the poets’ language within a socio-cultural construct. The thesis highlights the ways in which the authors’ interactions with socio-cultural events, such as industrialization, impact the ways in which their parole interacts and at times conflicts with the underlying system of poetic tradition. Additionally, the study examines the ways in which Wordsworth and Whitman interact with two binary oppositions central to Romantic philosophy, the living or dead and the pastoral or industrial. The study found evidence to support an epistolary relationship between Walt Whitman and William Wordsworth, …

Women’S Agency And The Historical Record: Reflections On Female Activists In Nineteenth-Century Japan, Marnie S. Anderson Apr 2011

Women’S Agency And The Historical Record: Reflections On Female Activists In Nineteenth-Century Japan, Marnie S. Anderson

History: Faculty Publications

This article examines the small body of Japanese-language historiography on women’s activism in late nineteenth-century Japan. The era saw a sharp rise in the number of female activists, and yet the activities of these women have usually been interpreted as the result of male initiative. Only women who left a clear record in their own hand—demonstrating what I call “literacy agency”—are seen as full agents. I suggest that such understandings are insufficient by presenting four cases of women’s activism, including local women’s groups, geisha activists, a petitioner, and several writers. It turns out that female activists who displayed “literary agency” …

The Book Of Mormon: The Earliest Text, Robert L. Maxwell, Royal Skousen Apr 2011

The Book Of Mormon: The Earliest Text, Robert L. Maxwell, Royal Skousen

BYU Studies

The Book of Mormon: The Earliest Text begins with a twenty-two-page introduction by Grant Hardy about the nature and coming forth of the Book of Mormon, together with an inviting call for the further study of that book within LDS, American, and world contexts; and also with a seventeen-page editor's preface by Skousen, describing the nature of the Book of Mormon text and the goals and typographical conventions of this "Yale Edition." The bulk of the book (1-738) consists of a presentation of the complete text of the Book of Mormon itself, a stemma showing the genealogy of the various …

Devising And Investigating Benefits Of Interconnected Interventions To Promote Education Majors' Culturally Responsive Teaching, Joan Gipe, Janet C. Richards Apr 2011

Devising And Investigating Benefits Of Interconnected Interventions To Promote Education Majors' Culturally Responsive Teaching, Joan Gipe, Janet C. Richards

Walden Faculty and Staff Publications

For five years I have supervised a summer literacy camp that connects graduate education majors with students from diverse ethnicities. Each summer I noted I inadequately challenged the education majors to extend their knowledge, examine their attitudes, and expand their abilities to offer culturally responsive literacy instruction to students in the camp. Therefore, I employed a formative-experimental framework to explore the benefits of adding two interventions to our curriculum to stimulate the education majors’ culturally responsive dispositions. My discoveries indicate teacher educators can help education majors develop culturally responsive understandings, and pedagogical repertoires that meet the needs of students from …

Chapter six presents conclusions.
