A Lexical Transducer For North Slope IñUpiaq, Aric R. Bills May 2011

A Lexical Transducer For North Slope IñUpiaq, Aric R. Bills

Linguistics

This thesis describes the creation and evaluation of software designed to analyze and generate North Slope Iñupiaq words. Given a complete lñupiaq word as input, it attempts to identify the word's stem and suffixes, including the grammatical category and any inflectional information contained in the word. Given a stem and list of suffixes as input, it attempts to produce the corresponding Iñupiaq word, applying phonological processes as necessary. Innovations in the implementation of this software include Iñupiaq-specific formats for specifying lexical data, including a table-based format for specifying inflectional suffixes in paradigms; a treatment of phonologically-conditioned irregular allomorphy which leverages …

Digital Diversity: Broadband And Indigenous Populations In Alaska, Heather E. Hudson

ISER Reports

Alaska Natives comprise several cultural and linguistic groups including Inupiat, Yupik, Athabascan, Aleut, Tlingit and Haida, organized into some 226 tribes. Approximately two-thirds of the indigenous population live in more than 200 rural villages, most of which are remote settlements with fewer than 200 people and no road access. Since the late 1970’s, all communities with at least 25 permanent residents have had telephone service, but broadband connectivity remains limited. The major mechanism for extending Internet access to rural Alaska has been federal universal service funds, specifically the E-rate program that subsidizes Internet access for schools and libraries, and the …

Communication In The Courtroom, Kathryn Meagan Cowles

Honors Theses

An attorney's communication style - not just what he or she says, but how he or she says it - can affect the outcome of a trial. By performing a meta-analysis of thirty-four peer-reviewed articles on this subject, areas where research is plentiful and areas where research may be lacking are identifiable. Variables for this project include the type of communication, the type of legal case, mention or lack thereof of attorney-communication training, and the sample subject. Upon analysis of these articles, it was found that research in the areas of verbal and non-verbal communication, attorney-jury communication, and criminal cases …

Beyond Words: The Remystification Of The Divine Through Dance, Silence And Theopoetics, Nora F. Wright May 2011

Beyond Words: The Remystification Of The Divine Through Dance, Silence And Theopoetics, Nora F. Wright

Scripps Senior Theses

This thesis challenges Classical Christian presentations of God based on exclusive and literalized metaphors. This piece explores the response of three dissenting groups, who place their emphasis on an experiential theology, directly challenging the use of conventional language to describe God. The Quaker practice of silent worship, Isadora Duncan’s dance form and Theopoetics each demand that religious structures enable an experience of the Divine that is spontaneous, mysterious and deeply personal.

Andre Goeritz Mfa Thesis Statement, Andre M. Goeritz May 2011

Andre Goeritz Mfa Thesis Statement, Andre M. Goeritz

CGU MFA Theses

I strive to make objects of no complicity--arranging smaller parts to create larger forms, or allowing the combination of parts to allude to narratives without linearity, foreshadowing, point of entry, point of attack, conflict, context, or catharsis; a state of sustained stillness until equilibrium is no longer a desired result, at which point the parts of the whole can be dismantled, reconfigured, made anew. I think about words, rhythm, inflection, resonance or timbre, vocal dissonance, dismembered disjointed utterances, and repetition--somatic impulses guided by intent. Intention translates into action--an act of will, a willful act, an act of willful intent--a marker …

Miscue Analysis: Toward A Parsimonious Approach To Assessment Of Oral Reading Errors In The Classroom, Tera Bradley Traylor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Several informal, classroom-based methods currently exist for evaluating reading performance, but the daily demands teachers face require that assessment be as efficient and effective as possible. The purpose of this study was to examine two different approaches to analyzing oral reading-- assessment of word recognition ability and miscue analysis-- in search of a parsimonious approach to children's reading assessment in a sample of second-grade children. Children's word reading was assessed through administration of context-free word lists, and oral reading miscues were gathered from reading of connected text. The results suggested that substitution miscues and self-correction of errors were significantly correlated …

Envisioning An African Child Development Field, Kofi Marfo

Institute for Human Development, East Africa

Institutionalization of an African child development field is a necessary aspect of strategies for strengthening the continent’s contributions to a global knowledge base. A disciplinary structure advances inquiry as it facilitates professionalization and provides space to formulate the canons and conventions that will guide knowledge production and the preparation and socialization of future researchers. Using the term disciplinary development to denote the process of bringing such a field about, this article outlines a pathway to disciplinary development, emphasizing important lessons that must be learned from (a) internal challenges to knowledge production in African universities, (b) Euro-American psychology’s disciplinary development history, …
