Degrees In Context -- Asking The Right Questions About Preparing Skilled And Effective Teachers Of Young Children, Mccormick Center For Early Childhood Leadership

McCormick Center for Early Childhood Leadership Publications

A recent policy brief jointly published by the National Institute for Early Education Research and the Center for the Study of Child Care Employment argues that the attention given to whether an associate or baccalaureate degree is the appropriate baseline education for a qualified early educator masks equally important questions about the content and quality of the education received, the on-going suppor for teaching and learning, and the effects of the work environment.1 The policy brief explores these contextual issues and makes recommendations for policy, resources, or further research.

Teaching Vocabulary Through Data-Driven Learning, Erin Margaret Shaw Jun 2011

Teaching Vocabulary Through Data-Driven Learning, Erin Margaret Shaw

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this master's project was to write a resource book that demonstrates how teachers can use data-driven learning methods to teach vocabulary. First, a brief overview of corpus linguistics, data-driven learning, and the corpus used in this book (COCA) is given. Then, the book presents different aspects of vocabulary learning in the context of a corpus. Topics included are frequency knowledge, part of speech knowledge, morphological knowledge, synonym knowledge, collocational knowledge, and register knowledge with a chapter on each topic. For each aspect of vocabulary learning there is a section that introduces the topic to the teacher, followed …

A Study Of The Correlation Between Working Memory And Second Language Ei Test Scores, Eve Kiyomi Okura Jun 2011

A Study Of The Correlation Between Working Memory And Second Language Ei Test Scores, Eve Kiyomi Okura

Theses and Dissertations

A principal argument against the use of elicited imitation (EI) to measure L2 oral proficiency is that performance does not require linguistic knowledge, but requires only rote memorization. This study addressed the issue by administering two tests to the same group of students studying English as a second language: (1) a working memory test, and (2) an English oral proficiency EI test. Participants came from a range of English language proficiency levels. A Pearson correlation was performed on the test results for each participant. The hypothesis was that English EI scores and working memory scores would not correlate significantly. This …

Librarians As Partners Of The Nursing Faculty In Teaching Scholarly Inquiry In Nursing To Undergraduates At Brigham Young University, Jane Lassetter, Barbara L. Mandleco, Lynn C. Callister, Elizabeth S. Hopkins, Meagan Astill Jun 2011

Librarians As Partners Of The Nursing Faculty In Teaching Scholarly Inquiry In Nursing To Undergraduates At Brigham Young University, Jane Lassetter, Barbara L. Mandleco, Lynn C. Callister, Elizabeth S. Hopkins, Meagan Astill

Faculty Publications

This paper describes collaboration between the nursing librarian and faculty members teaching Scholarly Inquiry in Nursing (Nursing Research), a course for baccalaureate nursing students. Workshops presented by the librarian enhanced nursing students' information literacy skills, particularly related to accessing evidence-based sources. Student perceptions of the library integration with Scholarly Inquiry in Nursing are presented, and suggest that librarians empower them with knowledge and skills that enhance their ability to integrate evidence into their nursing practice.

Why Have All The Teachers Gone: Co-Inquiry Of Teacher And Teacher Educators, Laurie R. Lehman, Jessica Trubek, Lauren Wong Jun 2011

Why Have All The Teachers Gone: Co-Inquiry Of Teacher And Teacher Educators, Laurie R. Lehman, Jessica Trubek, Lauren Wong

i.e.: inquiry in education

Many teachers enter the profession through alternative certification programs, completing a master's degree at the same time as they start their teaching careers. This study explores the teaching and graduate experience of one of these teachers. In this collaborative inquiry, this teacher was both participant and co-researcher with two teacher educators. The themes of School Dysfunction, Culture Clash, Disconnect between Coursework and Teaching, and Authenticity emerged through the study of the teacher's work. These findings led to the conclusion that students' experience of teaching needs to be brought into graduate classrooms and treated as valuable knowledge. If new teachers are …

Framing Health Care Across The Pond: A Comparative Content Analysis Of Elite Newspapers In The Us And Uk During The 2009 American Health Policy Debate, Jackson Bales Foote Jun 2011

Framing Health Care Across The Pond: A Comparative Content Analysis Of Elite Newspapers In The Us And Uk During The 2009 American Health Policy Debate, Jackson Bales Foote

Theses

This study analyzes content from eight leading newspapers in the United States and United Kingdom during ten months of the 2009 American health care policy debate, identifying emergent issue-specific health care frames that manifest themselves in key framing devices, like metaphors, exemplars, catchphrases, and depictions. This exploratory, quantitive frame analysis is conducted in a cross-cultural context to facilitate generalizable comparisons about how the news media in different countries frame social welfare policy through symbolic and rhetorical elements. A principal component analysis is used to reduce the health care-specific variables into four frames: access, choice, rising costs, and market competition. The …

Principles Of Learning: A Conceptual Framework For Domain-Specific Theories Of Learning, Christian J. Weibell Jun 2011

Principles Of Learning: A Conceptual Framework For Domain-Specific Theories Of Learning, Christian J. Weibell

Theses and Dissertations

This study is predicated on the belief that there does not now exist, nor will there ever exist, any single theory of learning that is broad enough to account for all types of learning yet specific enough to be maximally useful in practical application. Perhaps this dichotomy is the reason for the apparent gap between existing theories of learning and the practice of instructional design. As an alternative to any supposed grand theory of learning—and following the lead of prominent thinkers in the fields of clinical psychology and language teaching—this study proposes a shift toward principles. It presents a principle-based …

"Clubs Of Clubs": A Networks Approach To The Logic Of Membership In Intergovernmental Organizations, Yonatan Lupu, Brian D. Greenhill Jun 2011

"Clubs Of Clubs": A Networks Approach To The Logic Of Membership In Intergovernmental Organizations, Yonatan Lupu, Brian D. Greenhill

2011

Political scientists are paying increasing attention to the effect that shared membership in intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) has in international politics.  A number of studies have examined the role that shared membership in IGOs has on dependent variables such as conflict, trade, interest convergence and the diffusion of human rights norms.  More recently, scholars have turned their attention to explaining the variation that exists in the extent to which states join IGOs in the first place.  In this paper we advance this literature by adopting a network theoretic perspective of IGO membership.  Rather than considering the IGO network as simply a …

Tanzanian Nurses Understanding And Practice Of Spiritual Care, Khairunnisa Aziz Dhamani, Pauline Paul, Joanne Kaye Olson Jun 2011

Tanzanian Nurses Understanding And Practice Of Spiritual Care, Khairunnisa Aziz Dhamani, Pauline Paul, Joanne Kaye Olson

School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa

Spirituality, as a basic characteristic of humans and a contributor to human health, is regarded as part of nursing practice. The purpose of this study was to examine how Tanzanian nurses understand spirituality and spiritual care. Using the qualitative method of interpretive description, fifteen registered nurses engaged in clinical practice in a Tanzanian hospital were recruited to participate in this study. In-depth interviews using open-ended questions were carried out, tape-recorded, and transcribed verbatim. Data collection and inductive analysis occurred concurrently. In this paper, key findings are grouped under the following headings: meaning of spiritual care, recognition of spiritual needs, and …

Language In The Name Of National Security: The Transformation Of Arabic Language Instruction In U.S. Institutions Of Higher Education, Evelyn Daugherty Jun 2011

Language In The Name Of National Security: The Transformation Of Arabic Language Instruction In U.S. Institutions Of Higher Education, Evelyn Daugherty

Sociology Honors Projects

Government designation of Arabic as a “strategic language” following WWII transformed Arabic language instruction in U.S. institutions of higher education. Funding from the government created a shift away from teaching students to read and translate classical Arabic for academic purposes and toward teaching modern varieties of the language for communication.  I employ a three-pronged institutional analysis that takes into account the role of government, the role of professional associations, and the role of individual instructors in the redefinition of norms governing Arabic language instruction during the past seventy years. I find that coercive pressure stemming from government interest affected Arabic …

Automatic Domain Model Creation Using Pattern-Based Fact Extraction, Christopher Thomas, Pankaj Mehra, Wenbo Wang, Amit P. Sheth, Gerhard Weikum, Victor Chan Jun 2011

Automatic Domain Model Creation Using Pattern-Based Fact Extraction, Christopher Thomas, Pankaj Mehra, Wenbo Wang, Amit P. Sheth, Gerhard Weikum, Victor Chan

Kno.e.sis Publications

This paper describes a minimally guided approach to automatic domain model creation. The first step is to carve an area of interest out of the Wikipedia hierarchy based on a simple query or other starting point. The second step is to connect the concepts in this domain hierarchy with named relationships. A starting point is provided by Linked Open Data, such as DBPedia. Based on these community-generated facts we train a pattern-based fact-extraction algorithm to augment a domain hierarchy with previously unknown relationship occurrences. Pattern vectors are learned that represent occurrences of relationships between concepts. The process described can be …

Images Of Leadership: A New Exercise To Teach Leadership From A Social Constructionist Perspective, Christopher I. Maxwell, Anne M. Greenhalgh

Organization Management Journal

Adopting a social constructionist approach to the teaching of leadership, we asked students in a required course in management to find or create and submit a digital image that captures leadership as they see it. Our intention was to help students understand their own perceptions of leadership and to see how their perceptions compare to those of others. We have run this exercise for the last 10 years (2000–2009), and to date we have collected 5037 digital images. These images are used throughout the course to demonstrate the relevance of the subject, to enrich the discussion of leadership theories, to …

Issues And Techniques In Translating Scientific Terms From English To Khmer For A University-Level Text In Cambodia, Cassie F. Quigley, Alandeom W. Oliviera, Alistair Curry, Gayle Buck

Publications

Teachers and students spend much time interacting with written resources such as textbooks, tests, or worksheets during classroom instruction. What if no text is available, however, in the language of the learners? This case study describes the processes and techniques adopted by two university lecturers in Cambodia, as they translated an L1 (first language) science text into Khmer in a manner that tried to take full account of the cultural, linguistic, and social dimensions of language. Using a variety of translation techniques, they aimed to produce a Khmer text which would be most effective in promoting the learning of the …

Poetry And The Multiple Drafts Model: The Functional Similarity Of Cole Swensen's Verse And Human Consciousness, Connor Ryan Kreimeyer Fisher Jun 2011

Poetry And The Multiple Drafts Model: The Functional Similarity Of Cole Swensen's Verse And Human Consciousness, Connor Ryan Kreimeyer Fisher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This project compares the operational methods of three of Cole Swensen's books of poetry (Such Rich Hour, Try, and Goest) with ways in which the human mind and consciousness function. I use Daniel Dennett's Multiple Drafts Model of consciousness, as described in Consciousness Explained, alongside concepts presented in several other philosophical works (from both analytic and continental traditions), to demonstrate that significant similarities exist between the operations of poetry and consciousness in general, and that these operational similarities are especially noticeable in Swensen's work. This thesis examines several operational modes that are present within the …

Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Decision-Making: Development Of A Survey Tool, Janeann M. Lineman Jun 2011

Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Decision-Making: Development Of A Survey Tool, Janeann M. Lineman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It has been projected that by 2020 one out of three children will originate from a culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) population (Rogers & Lopez, 2002). Thus, school psychologists are called to reexamine and modify their service-delivery methods to better meet the needs of CLD populations (Guerrero & Leung, 2008). The purposes of this study were: (1) to identify what a CLD problem-solving process looks like in the daily practices of school psychologists; (2) identify the impact of perceived value and skill level on the frequency of implementation practices of a CLD problem-solving model; and (3) identify if personal characteristics …

From Where I Am Standing: Indigenous Narrative And Photo Documentary, Nestor R. Veloz Passalacqua Jun 2011

From Where I Am Standing: Indigenous Narrative And Photo Documentary, Nestor R. Veloz Passalacqua

Ethnic Studies

Latin American Indigenous Peoples (LAIP) are a marginalized segment in Latin America. They inhabit a sub-America and are forced to migrate due to socio-political struggle and cultural coercion. LAIP experience a transnational and transborder migration that reflects the quality of cultural hybridity and of regional, ethnic, and cultural crossings. The purpose of this study is to research LAIP ways of reclaiming and reproducing cultural practices that elicit Indigenous awareness, knowledge, and ethnic identification in a transnational setting. The study examines through interviews and photographs transborder experiences and the lives of the participants. As a result, the project reveals that LAIP …

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

This work of feminist children’s literature was inspired by Aimee Carrillo Rowe’s article, “Be Longing: Toward a Feminist Politics of Relation.” Rowe’s theory of relational belonging suggests that our identities are made in relation to the individual people we come into contact with as well as the communities of people with whom we engage. Since our surroundings are constantly changing this suggests that our identities are consistently altered as well. I have taken this theory and translated it into a format palatable for children. The result of this translation is a feminist children's book titled Josephine, Josie, Jo. The book …
