Social Tagging As A Collecting Knowledge Strategy In The Engineering Design Change Process, Gerardo Alducin, Manuel Contero Jun 2011

Social Tagging As A Collecting Knowledge Strategy In The Engineering Design Change Process, Gerardo Alducin, Manuel Contero

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

The paper’s focus is on the analysis of the feasibility of using social tagging as a tool for knowledge collecting and retrieval, in the context of the Product Development Process. This process is a social activity which involves groups of individuals that share a common goal: “to design a product”. Traditional Knowledge Base Systems are not very well suited to capture the tacit knowledge that embeds this process. Social tagging is proposed in this paper as the mechanism to externalize the tacit knowledge about the best CAD modeling strategies between the design team members. This knowledge is especially relevant for …

Transformative Learning In Sustainable Design Education, Jody Joanna Boehnert Jun 2011

Transformative Learning In Sustainable Design Education, Jody Joanna Boehnert

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

Both designers and educators have a unique role to play in the creation of sustainable futures due to their ability to help people see new realities, develop new cognitive skills for dealing with complexity and create the social capacity to act on the basis of new knowledge. Transformative learning aims to build new cognitive capacities as well the agency to put new knowledge into practice. This learning has the potential to transcend the notorious value/action gap that divides our awareness of environmental threats from our capacity to take appropriate action. Beyond the mere dissemination of information, transformative learning engages participants …

Law And Legal Theory In The History Of Corporate Responsibility: Corporate Personhood, Lyman Johnson Jun 2011

Law And Legal Theory In The History Of Corporate Responsibility: Corporate Personhood, Lyman Johnson

Seattle University Law Review

This Article, the first of a multipart project, addresses the nature of corporate personhood, one area where law has played a central role in the history of corporate responsibility in the United States.1 The treatment will be illustrative, not exhaustive. Consistent with the theme of the larger project, the Article serves to make the simple but important point that a full historical understanding of corporate responsibility requires an appreciation of the law’s significant, if ultimately limited, contribution to the longstanding American quest for more responsible corporate conduct. On one hand, the spheres of law and corporate responsibility, although clearly complementary, …

The Future Of Socialism, Robert Paul Wolff Jun 2011

The Future Of Socialism, Robert Paul Wolff

Seattle University Law Review

An unpromising title, this, in the seventh year of the third millennium of the Common Era; rather like “Recent Developments in Ptolemaic Astronomy” or “Betamax—a Technology Whose Time Has Come.” My grandfather’s dream, the faith of my younger days, has turned to ashes. And yet, I remain persuaded that Karl Marx has something important to teach us about the world in which we live today. In what follows, I propose to take as my text a famous statement from Marx’s A Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy1—a sort of preliminary sketch of Das Kapital2—and see what it can tell …

Post-Skinnerian, Post-Skinner, Or Neo-Skinnerian? Hayes, Barnes-Holmes, Ai\Id Roche's Relational Frame Theory: A Post-Skinnerian Account Of Human Language And Cognition, Einar T. Ingvarsson, Edward K. Morris Jun 2011

Post-Skinnerian, Post-Skinner, Or Neo-Skinnerian? Hayes, Barnes-Holmes, Ai\Id Roche's Relational Frame Theory: A Post-Skinnerian Account Of Human Language And Cognition, Einar T. Ingvarsson, Edward K. Morris

The Psychological Record

The perceived inability of behaviorism to deal with complex human
behavior has been a recurrent theme among its critics. Although
ingenious and subtle, even Skinner's Verbal Behavior (1957) is widely
faulted on these grounds, in particular, for failing to explain linguistic
generativity (Chomsky, 1959). In Relational Frame Theory: A PostSkinnerian
Account of Human Language and Cognition, Hayes, BarnesHolmes,
and Roche (2001) confidently set out to remedy this situation. In
doing so, they do not subvert Skinner's account by postulating
hypothetical constructs, but instead extend the account by incorporating
the results of a recent program of research known as "relational frame …

Developing A Conceptual (Mosaic) Transcultural Model Of Nursing Care For Use At A Pediatric Inner-City Hospital, Lani Hollenbeck

Theses and Graduate Projects

The purpose of this project is to develop a transcultural model of nursing care for use at a pediatric inner-city hospital located in the Midwestern United States. The experience and outcome for pediatric patients and their families may be negatively impacted when language and culture are different from those of the nurse. Nurses working at the hospital have expressed discomfort when providing care for patients from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. They feel challenged to provide supportive nursing care without imposing their own ethnocentric viewpoints or nursing practices that may be inconsistent with desires of those from another culture. The …

Creating Community With Homeless And Marginally Housed Women, Judy Schlaefer

Theses and Graduate Projects

The purpose of this project is to create a weekly Drop-In Center where Homeless and Marginally Housed (HMH) women receive support, respite, and respect in a safe, welcoming environment. Homeless and Marginally Housed (HMH) women have unique needs due to daily struggles with disenfranchisement which include barriers to health services, battering, poor transportation, lack of recreation and education, neglect, and institutionalized poverty. The impetus for the Drop-In Center was to offer respite from the harsh environment created by the institutionalized violence against HMH women who deserve significant emotional and social support, nutrition, and respite. The transculrural nurse will be focused …

Monitoring And Evaluation Of Electronic Resources In Academic And Research Institutions In Kenya, Nasra Gathoni, Evan Njoroge, Agatha Kabugu, Damiana Kiilu, Felicitas Ratanya, Jane Gikandi, Eddah Wasike

Libraries

The revolution of Information Communication and Technology has brought a great change in the way libraries are providing services. Libraries have continued to embrace these technologies vis‐à‐vis Internet thus seeing the introduction of electronic resources to the library collection and services. The availability of good internet connectivity is essential in the provision of electronic resources. Kenya has had internet since 1996 (Mutula, 2001) and over the years there has been great effort to improve connectivity such as the recent introduction of fibre optic cable in 2009. The need for good internet connectivity has also been supported by initiatives such as …

A Fuzzy Logic Stock Trading System Based On Technical Analysis, Sammy Zeigenbein

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Technical analysis of financial markets involves analyzing past price movements in order to identify favorable trading opportunities. The objective of this research was to demonstrate that a fuzzy logic stock trading system based on technical analysis can assist average traders in becoming successful by optimizing the use of technical indicators and trading rules that experts use to identify when to buy and sell stock. Research of relevant literature explored the current state of knowledge in methodologies for developing and validating trading systems using technical indicators and fuzzy logic trading systems, providing guidelines for the development and evaluation of the system. …

Effects Of Extended Explicit Systematic Phonics Instruction On Adult L2 Fluency, H. Vanessa Ocana Jun 2011

Effects Of Extended Explicit Systematic Phonics Instruction On Adult L2 Fluency, H. Vanessa Ocana

Theses and Dissertations

Reading may be viewed as an invisible skill, and some may even consider it a passive skill. However, reading is an active and complex skill. It requires one to use a wide range of skills simultaneously to achieve fluency. Hence, it is crucial to learn and use strategies to master such a complex skill. Today, research states that fluent reading includes using top-down and bottom-up strategies, or an interactive approach, to truly become a fluent reader. In fact, research has shown the effects that all three models have had on students. More specifically, L1 studies have shown positive effects in …

The Instant Habit Of Thought: Perceptual Priming In Slogans, Ann Marie Lewis Jun 2011

The Instant Habit Of Thought: Perceptual Priming In Slogans, Ann Marie Lewis

Theses and Dissertations

Benjamin Whorf proposed a relationship between habitual language use and automatic behavior. His work has since led to a great deal of linguistic research, but the field thus far has neglected to explore the relationship between individual lexical items and their connotational effects. This work explores the relationship between exposure to altruism-related words and the subsequent lexical accessibility of aggressive words, then applies that research to real-life situations by exploring the consumer entitlement paradigm with the manipulation of slogans. I found that in a response time study, priming with altruistic items facilitated the lexical accessibility of aggressive items; however, in …

Theses and Dissertations

Students who participate in study abroad programs have the opportunity to interact with native speakers in a variety of settings. "Composition and Formation of Social Networks during Study Abroad Programs" explores the kinds of social networks that students form while abroad focusing on the areas of host families, church, school, community, and friends from the program. The kind of network that students form is heavily influenced by the nature of their program. Students from the same program often have social networks similar to those of their peers in the same program. Students who went abroad generally made friends in categories …

Educational Effects Of Implementing A K-12 Dual Language Instruction Program In A Community With A High Percentage Of Hispanics And Hispanic English Language Learners, Mario A. Ferron Jun 2011

Educational Effects Of Implementing A K-12 Dual Language Instruction Program In A Community With A High Percentage Of Hispanics And Hispanic English Language Learners, Mario A. Ferron

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Hispanic students have historically exhibited an educational achievement gap in a variety of indicators when compared with grade-level peers from other racial, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds. One of the goals of bilingual education research has been the identification of programs and instructional practices that have been shown to be effective in closing the academic achievement gap for Hispanic students. Therefore, the goal of this study was to examine the academic programs available in one school district in order to identify which program was most effective in helping Hispanic students reach full educational parity with their native English speaking peers as …

Intimate Immensity, Henrik Søderstrøm Jun 2011

Intimate Immensity, Henrik Søderstrøm

Theses

The small house that comprises my visual thesis, made of simple materials reclaimed from junk piles and old houses, was made as worship to the God who spoke the world into existence. This writing is a playful counterpart to my artwork. Water has an amazing ability to transpose itself fluidly across borders, from the atmosphere to the ground to the cells in your body. Its movement is defiant of divisions as it carries nutrients through layers of compost, from rotting biomass to new sprouts. My process of absorbing and using materials is inspired by this cycling. I am interested in …

Good To Great: A Framework For Improving Instruction In A Ninth Grade Academy, Donna Marable

Theses and Dissertations

This participatory action research project explores the leadership of a female African American high school principal in an urban district who applies the principles in Jim Collins' Good to Great (2001, 2005) to improve academic performance in a ninth grade academy. Participatory Action Research (PAR) is defined as planning, acting, observing, reflecting, and repeating each cycle in a spiral of self-reflective cycles. The data was captured through qualitative and quantitative data collection strategies. The study is written as an autoethnographic self-narrative and is a self-reflective study of my leadership. The findings of this study suggest that applying the principles in …
