Peer Mentoring At The Universidad Europea De Madrid: An Educational Strategy For The Development Of General And Specific Competences, Paloma Velasco Quintana, Agueda Benito Capa

Higher Learning Research Communications

The current educational model for the Europea Higher Education Area (EHEA), demands a greater involvement on the behalf of students in all aspects of their education. In this respect, peer mentorship not only provides effective orientation for newly admitted students, a key element of quality in education, but also the active participation of students mentors, leading to the development of a wide range of skills in both mentor and mentee students. From a research-action perspective, this article describes a program of peer mentoring, in which the student interaction taking place leads to wide-ranging knowledge acquisition (knowledge and know how) for …

Teen Pregnancy And Parenting: Attitudes And Behaviors Of Teenaged Long-Term Hispanics In Northern New Mexico, Mary Ann Osuchowski-Sanchez Jul 2011

Teen Pregnancy And Parenting: Attitudes And Behaviors Of Teenaged Long-Term Hispanics In Northern New Mexico, Mary Ann Osuchowski-Sanchez

Nursing ETDs

Teen pregnancy in Hispanic youth is a poorly understood phenomenon, thought to have numerous and overlapping sociocultural influences. Although Hispanics have had the highest teen pregnancy rates in the United States since 1995 and pregnancy rates that have declined much more slowly when compared to every other ethnic group, there is limited literature about Hispanic youth whose families are long-term residents of the United States and the factors that influence the decision-making processes and sexual behaviors of this population. The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the attitudes and behaviors related to teen pregnancy and parenting in …

Black In The Non-Black Imagination: How Anti-Black Ideology Shapes Non-Black Racial Discourse, Natasha Howard Jul 2011

Black In The Non-Black Imagination: How Anti-Black Ideology Shapes Non-Black Racial Discourse, Natasha Howard

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

This study examines the (re)production of anti-Black ideology in critical discourses on race. Though contemporary critical discourses on race have been concerned with theorizing about the deployment of colorblind racial ideology, this study takes the position that anti-Black ideology is uniquely situated within the United States. Post-Civil Rights critical dialogues on race call for a move beyond the Black/white binary and the need to transcend dualistic racial paradigms. Though a typical critique of colorblind ideology implicates a social structure that oppresses all people of color uniformly, this study argues that the reality of material and social consequences vary depending on …

Lasting Marks: The Legacy Of Robin Cassacinamon And The Survival Of The Mashantucket Pequot Nation, Shawn Wiemann Jul 2011

Lasting Marks: The Legacy Of Robin Cassacinamon And The Survival Of The Mashantucket Pequot Nation, Shawn Wiemann

History ETDs

My dissertation is a political and cultural history of seventeenth-century Anglo-Algonquian New England. Between the Pequot War of 1637 and King Philips War in 1675-76, a covalent Anglo-Algonquian society existed in New England. This created conditions which allowed the Pequots to reconstitute their communities after the devastation of the Pequot War. Robin Cassacinamon was instrumental in this process. His skills as an interpreter, diplomat, intermediary, and community leader connected Cassacinamon to the surviving Pequots and to important regional Algonquian and Puritan figures of the time. Cassacinamon became Pequot sachem, leading his people until his death in 1692. His work provided …

Crow History 1700-1950: A Political And Social Battle To Retain Their Culture, Alden Big Man Jr. Jul 2011

Crow History 1700-1950: A Political And Social Battle To Retain Their Culture, Alden Big Man Jr.

History ETDs

In my dissertation, 'Crow History 1700 — 1950: A Political and Social Battle to Retain their Culture,' I argue that the Social and Familial Kinship system utilized by the Crow is unique, and helped the Crows to preserve much of their Culture throughout the turbulent times of direct contact and assimilation. In this research I examine the movement of the Crows from eastern woodlands onto the Northern Plains, with an emphasis on the separation from the parent tribe. I argue the Crow purposely create a new and unique maternally based social and familial kinship system because of the separation from …

Evoking Visual Imagination In Teaching Writing: Esl Students' Perspectives, Izabella Kovarzina

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

This study examines the relationship between encouraging visual imagination and ESL (English as a Second Language) writing performance. It was designed as a onesemester case study of two groups: high-intermediate and intermediate ESL writers, using a series of pre-writing activities designed to stimulate visual imagination. As an investigation of imagination across different cultures and languages, this study is intended to shed new light on the role of visual imagination in ESL writing instruction. The data collected in this qualitative research study included four principal methods: 1) participants essay assignments exploring different writing topics throughout the 16-week semester; 2) participants' reflection …

Exploring The Experiences Of African American Students With Learning Disabilities In The Post-Secondary Setting, George Williams Jr Jul 2011

Exploring The Experiences Of African American Students With Learning Disabilities In The Post-Secondary Setting, George Williams Jr

Special Education ETDs

During the last 50 years, the overrepresentation of students from African American decent in special education programs has engendered much concern within the education community. In addition, the problem of disproportionate representation of African American students in special education exists in American society as a whole. Given these statistics, little information is available on the perceptions and experiences of African American students with learning disabilities (LD) as they enter higher education. The review of literature indicates that the body of research lacks the voices of African American students with LD in higher education. Lack of research in this area puts …

Quest For A Deaf Child: Ethics And Genetics, Teresa Blankmeyer Burke Jul 2011

Quest For A Deaf Child: Ethics And Genetics, Teresa Blankmeyer Burke

Philosophy ETDs

This project investigates the question of whether it is morally justifiable to use genetic technology in order to bear a deaf child. Even though it may seem counterintuitive to hearing people, deaf people often desire to have deaf children. Reasons for this vary, but often include a deep longing to have a child who can fully participate in ones linguistic and cultural community. Many view using genetic technology to ensure or create a child with a disability as harmful and a dereliction of parental duty; dismissing the desire for a deaf child as misguided at best. I begin by situating …

Exploring The Language Of Older Adult Learners As They Discuss Beginning A Bachelors Degree Program, Pamela Verstynen Jul 2011

Exploring The Language Of Older Adult Learners As They Discuss Beginning A Bachelors Degree Program, Pamela Verstynen

Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs

The purpose of this study was to explore the metaphors and cognitively structured metaphors older adult students of the Baby Boomer generation use when discussing their experiences of beginning a bachelors program. Research regarding the cognitive abilities of older adult students was explored. A phenomenological approach was used employing open-ended questions during a single interview designed to elicit information about four areas of interest: support systems, motivation, expectations and a comparison of this experience to another life experience. The analysis of students' responses identified figurative metaphors and metonymy. Qualitative analysis was applied to the data, followed by identifying cognitive metaphors …

Communicating Quantitative Literacy: An Examination Of Open-Ended Assessment Items In Timss, Nals, Ials, And Pisa, Karl W. Kosko, Jesse L. M. Wilkins Jul 2011

Communicating Quantitative Literacy: An Examination Of Open-Ended Assessment Items In Timss, Nals, Ials, And Pisa, Karl W. Kosko, Jesse L. M. Wilkins

Numeracy

Quantitative Literacy (QL) has been described as the skill set an individual uses when interacting with the world in a quantitative manner. A necessary component of this interaction is communication. To this end, assessments of QL have included open-ended items as a means of including communicative aspects of QL. The present study sought to examine whether such open-ended items typically measured aspects of quantitative communication, as compared to mathematical communication, or mathematical skills. We focused on public-released items and rubrics from four of the most widely referenced assessments: the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS-95): the National Adult Literacy …

A Temporal Fuzzy-Art Neural Network Architecture As A Model Of Phoneme Perception, Rex Devon Hjelm Jul 2011

A Temporal Fuzzy-Art Neural Network Architecture As A Model Of Phoneme Perception, Rex Devon Hjelm

Linguistics ETDs

This paper explores the applicability of Adaptive Resistance Theory- (ART-) type neural networks for finding and encoding linguistic structures, specifically those corresponding to acoustic patterns in natural speech. We build an interpretation of human perceptual response to acoustic pattern in natural speech, translating this to a neural architecture as a model of acquisition, storage, and classification of acoustic speech patterns.

Eenie, Meenie, Miney, Moe: Can It Work For Bibles?, Mark A. Throntveit

Faculty Publications

How does one choose among the vast number of English translations of the Bible now available? Most important, of course, is to read any translation; but then it is important to know what kind of translation it aims to be, whether it is appropriate for the intended use, and what its biases are. Comparing several translations will bring even more insight.

Media Interpretation Of A Leading Woman Politician’S Performances And Dress Code Challenges, Mercedes Bengoechea Jul 2011

Media Interpretation Of A Leading Woman Politician’S Performances And Dress Code Challenges, Mercedes Bengoechea

Journal of Interdisciplinary Feminist Thought

Based on a corpus of 63 press columns and reports, the paper analyzes how the media construct the identities of Carme Chacón, the first Spanish woman defence minister. It focuses on two salient pictures of her which represent the roles she successfully performed during her first eleven months in office (from April 2008 to March 2009): minister mother, and hybridly-gendered military officer/minister. The study reveals how Chacón’s success as a politician seems to be proportionate to her closeness to the socially sanctioned feminine role of mother, or to the powerful social roles of minister and military officer, performed from hybridly-gendered …

Geopolitics Of The Kaliningrad Exclave And Enclave: Russian And Eu Perspectives, Alexander Diener, Joshua Hagen Jul 2011

Geopolitics Of The Kaliningrad Exclave And Enclave: Russian And Eu Perspectives, Alexander Diener, Joshua Hagen

Geography Faculty Research

Two U.S. political geographers examine a range of geopolitical issues associated with the shifting sovereignty of Russia's Kaliningrad Oblast (a part of the former German province of East Prussia) during the 20th century, as well as the region's evolving geopolitical status as a consequence of the European Union's enlargement to embrace Poland and Lithuania. They argue that Kaliningrad today can be considered a "double" borderland, situated simultaneously on the European Union's border with Russia as well as physically separated from Russia, its home country, by the surrounding land boundaries of EU states. Although technically neither an exclave nor an enclave, …

Immanence, Pluralism, And Politics, Matthew Moore Jul 2011

Immanence, Pluralism, And Politics, Matthew Moore

Political Science

The article examines whether theories based on an immanent worldview-roughly, one that denies the existence of transcendent principle or agents relevant to human life-offer a better solution to the problems of political pluralism than do transcendent theories. After reviewing three such theories-one from Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri, one from Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, and one from William Connallythe author argues that theories like Connolly's, which both make posttlve claims and explicitly acknowledge the contestability of those claims, are the most defensible. At the same time, even those theories run into the problems of transcendent theories, especially relying on …

Learning By Example: Standardized Testing In The Cases Of China, Korea, Japan, And Taiwan, Osman Ozturgut Jul 2011

Learning By Example: Standardized Testing In The Cases Of China, Korea, Japan, And Taiwan, Osman Ozturgut

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Kandel (1881–1965) is the most widely recognized leader and founder of modern comparative education. He asserted that the direction of education in democratic nations ought to be “borrowed and adjusted” within the cultural context of each nation. He further argued that, “so many of the problems in education are today common to most countries; in their solution certain common principles . . . are involved; the practical outcomes may, however, differ because of differences in tradition, in social and political principles, and in cultural standards”(Kandel, 1936, p. 401). As Kandel (1933) suggested, the problems and purposes of education have in …
