Law and Contemporary Problems

The U.S. healthcare system has undergone dramatic changes in the past year, which will have a profound impact on American society. While the "Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010" seeks to ensure healthcare coverage for the vast majority of Americans, controversies relating to scope of coverage, cost and course of treatment chosen, quality of care rendered, healthcare staff demeanor, and bioethical dilemmas are bound to persist. Indeed, in all likelihood, these controversies will even expand with the growth in the number of healthcare recipients under the federal scheme. Moreover, the changes introduced through the U.S. healthcare reform act …

A Study On Facility Planning Using Discrete Event Simulation: Case Study Of A Grain Delivery Terminal, Sarah M. Asio Jul 2011

A Study On Facility Planning Using Discrete Event Simulation: Case Study Of A Grain Delivery Terminal, Sarah M. Asio

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The application of traditional approaches to the design of efficient facilities can be tedious and time consuming when uncertainty and a number of constraints exist. Queuing models and mathematical programming techniques are not able to capture the complex interaction between resources, the environment and space constraints for dynamic stochastic processes. In the following study discrete event simulation is applied to the facility planning process for a grain delivery terminal. The discrete event simulation approach has been applied to studies such as capacity planning and facility layout for a gasoline station and evaluating the resource requirements for a manufacturing facility. To …

Are Small And Medium States Superior To Large? The Role A State’S Size Plays In Regional Integration, Jerome Marston Jul 2011

Are Small And Medium States Superior To Large? The Role A State’S Size Plays In Regional Integration, Jerome Marston

Josef Korbel Journal of Advanced International Studies

This study examines the relationship between a state’s size and regional integration. Specifically, this study empirically focuses on whether a particular size of state plays a disproportionate role in establishing regional institutions. This paper undertakes research in an attempt to settle a dispute that has arisen within the literature. Expressly, whether it is small, medium, or large states that encourage regional integration and furthermore whether the former two in fact resist the latter’s attempts to do so. In an effort to resolve this debate, the paper explores critical time periods in the establishment of the European Union and MERCOSUR. This …

Code Switching And Social Prestige: Code Switching Among Iranian University Learners, S. Sadighian, Ali Rahimi Jul 2011

Code Switching And Social Prestige: Code Switching Among Iranian University Learners, S. Sadighian, Ali Rahimi

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

“Two or more phonemic systems may coexist in the speech of a monolingual.” This was what initially called “switching code” by Fries and Pike (1949). People change codes or use words other than their native ones while speaking in their native language. Codes are thus defined as a verbal component that can be as small as a morpheme or as comprehensive and complex as the entire system of language. (Ayemoni, 2006) code-switching is related to and indicative of group membership in particular types of bilingual speech communities, such that the regularities of the alternating use of two or more languages …

Esl Program Models And Court Cases: An Overview For Administrators, Chris Jochum Jul 2011

Esl Program Models And Court Cases: An Overview For Administrators, Chris Jochum

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The demographic of our country’s public school students is very diverse and continues to change. By 2020, African American, Hispanic, Asian American and Native American groups will account for more than 40 percent of the U.S. population and this percentage is expected to increase to 50 percent by the year 2040 (U.S. Census Bureau, 2003). Currently, 46 percent of all schools in the United States have English Language Learners (ELL) or English as Second Language (ESL) students (National Center for Educational Statistics). Furthermore, Hispanics now make up the largest minority group in the United States and it’s estimated that by …

One World Is Enough, Mark Seaman Jul 2011

One World Is Enough, Mark Seaman

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

When Sting wrote and sang these lyrics more than twenty years ago, he was trying to illustrate the absurdity of dividing our planet into arbitrary designations (e.g., “Third World country”) based on conditions such as location, status, and culture. Today, educators continue to make similar, broad assumptions about populations based on, among other things, cultural background, language, and religion. These assumptions often inappropriately affect educational policy-making decisions at the national, state, and local levels. Educators today must continually deal with issues such as racism, language barriers, political influences, and cultural inclusion. This must be done in schools whose populations are …

Kazakhstan English-Major Students: Motivation To Learn English And Academic Achievement, Aizat Nurshatayeva Jul 2011

Kazakhstan English-Major Students: Motivation To Learn English And Academic Achievement, Aizat Nurshatayeva

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The marked increase in the amount of research on foreign language learning motivation in the last 30 years is due to the widespread recognition of the vital importance of motivation to language learning achievement (Chambers 1999; Dörnyei 2001; Ushioda 2006). The complexity of motivation as such adds to the variety and range of research most of which is heavily influenced by the socio-educational model of second language acquisition formulated by Gardner (1985). His distinction between integrative orientation (when a learner wishes to communicate with people from the target culture) and instrumental orientation (when a learner wishes to learn the language …

The Socio-Demographic Progression Of The Pakistani Woman Manager 1988 To 2004: An Empirical Evidence From The Private Sector, Shehla Riza Arifeen

Business Review

The purpose of this study was to help identify the types of women who had opted for managerial professions in the private sector, and to identify any trends in the social, economic, or educational backgrounds that might have had a bearing on the types of women likely to pursue a managerial career. Research for the survey included 152 organizations in the private sector that had employed graduates from business educational institutions. Out of these 87 organizations reported women at managerial levels. 207 managerial women answered the mail survey. The findings suggest that the profession still remains the domain of upper-middle-class …

Immigration To The Great Plains, 1865-1914 War, Politics, Technology, And Economic Development, Bruce Garver Jul 2011

Immigration To The Great Plains, 1865-1914 War, Politics, Technology, And Economic Development, Bruce Garver

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The advent and vast extent of immigration to the Great Plains states during the years 1865 to 1914 is perhaps best understood in light of the new international context that emerged during the 1860s in the aftermath of six large wars whose consequences included the enlargement of civil liberties, an acceleration of economic growth and technological innovation, the expansion of world markets, and the advent of mass immigration to the United States from east-central and southern Europe.1 Facilitating all of these changes was the achievement of widespread literacy through universal, free, compulsory, and state-funded elementary education in the United States, …

The Effects Of Age, Information, And Personal Contact On Attitudes Toward Individuals With Cleft Lip And Palate, Adam Thomas Blancher Jul 2011

The Effects Of Age, Information, And Personal Contact On Attitudes Toward Individuals With Cleft Lip And Palate, Adam Thomas Blancher

Doctoral Dissertations

The aim of the current study was to examine the effects of information and brief personal contact with individuals with a cleft lip and/or palate (CLP). One hundred and eighty-nine children (n = 78) and young adults (n = 111) participated in the study. A modified version of the Multidimensional Attitudes Scale Toward Persons with Disabilities (MAS) was used to measure the participants attitudes toward individuals with CLP. Using mixed multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA), it was found that children's attitudes were significantly improved by information and contact with individuals with CLP, and these findings supported previous research. …

Apologies In The Healthcare System: From Clinical Medicine To Public Health, Michal Alberstein, Nadav Davidovitch Jul 2011

Apologies In The Healthcare System: From Clinical Medicine To Public Health, Michal Alberstein, Nadav Davidovitch

Law and Contemporary Problems

Alberstein and Davidovitch explore the role of apologies in healthcare systems from a broader perspective. The significance of apology in terms of social solidarity is addressed and the ways in which each apology situation entails a clash between cultural identities are demonstrated. The debate on apology is explored by presenting a public health perspective of apologies following collective traumatic events such as the application of sterilization laws or flawed human experimentations in various settings.

The Discourse And Practice Of Native American Cuisine: Native American Chefs And Native American Cooks In Contemporary Southwest Kitchens, Lois Ellen Frank Jul 2011

The Discourse And Practice Of Native American Cuisine: Native American Chefs And Native American Cooks In Contemporary Southwest Kitchens, Lois Ellen Frank

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation analyzes the emergent Native American cuisine of the American Southwest. It consists of an ethnography of both Native American cooks, who are largely self-taught and practice in noncommercial settings, as well as Native American chefs, some self taught and some professionally trained and working in commercial settings. The ethnographic work includes both extensive and intensive field interviews with chefs and cooks, and close attention to their work in home and professional kitchens. Particular attention is paid to histories of food knowledge, as well as to food preparation concepts, techniques, performance, and aesthetics. The foods employed by these cooks …

User-Friendliness And Virtual Reality: A Hypertextual Reading Of Alain Mabanckou’S Verre Cassé, Jason Herbeck Jul 2011

User-Friendliness And Virtual Reality: A Hypertextual Reading Of Alain Mabanckou’S Verre Cassé, Jason Herbeck

World Languages Faculty Publications and Presentations

Set in a seedy Congolese bar seemingly far removed from the ever-present influences of globalization (aside perhaps from the occasional copy of Paris-Match), Alain Mabanckou's Verre Cassé (2005)2 does not have a single foot- or endnote. In fact, the novel has no such peritext3 whatsoever aside from its title and two short inter-titles that serve to identify the two parts of the work as premiers feuillets and derniers feuillets. However, this absence of peritext is not in the least surprising given that the novel does not contain any lexical, idiomatic or vernacular terms specific to the …

Paralinguistic And Kinesic Codes Of Performance: An Intercultural Gilgamesh, Patrick Michael Finelli Jul 2011

Paralinguistic And Kinesic Codes Of Performance: An Intercultural Gilgamesh, Patrick Michael Finelli

Theatre and Dance Faculty Publications

This paper examines the directing, acting and rehearsal process in transforming the ancient Babylonian epic Gilgamesh for the stage using performers’ journals as a means of determining the effect of corporeal non-western styles on actors whose prior experience was almost exclusively in naturalistic and text-based theatre. The introduction of theatrical elements from multiple cultures including puppetry and the masks and techniques of Noh drama created a multi-tiered field for intercultural exchange. While Patrice Pavis’s hourglass model for the transfer of theatrical material from a source to a target culture may hold true for productions that use linear modes of transmission, …

Assessing Secondary And College Students’ Implicit Assumptions About The Particulate Nature Of Matter: Development And Validation Of The Structure And Motion Of Matter Survey, Marilyne Stains, Marta Escriu-Sune, Myrna Lisseth Molina Alvarez De Santizo, Hannah Sevian

Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications

Development of learning progressions has been at the forefront of science education for several years. While understanding students’ conceptual development toward “big ideas” in science is extremely valuable for researchers, science teachers can also benefit from assessment tools that diagnose their students’ trajectories along the learning progressions. In this paper, we describe the development and validation of a teacher-friendly survey, the Structure and Motion of Matter (SAMM) survey, designed to measure students’ trajectories along aspects of a research-based learning progression on the particulate nature of matter. Specifically, the survey assesses students’ implicit assumptions about four concepts: the structure of solute …

An Intelligent Diagnostic System For Diabetes Using Rule Based Reasoning And Object-Oriented Methodology, Vimala Balakrishnan, Vithyatheri Govindan

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Diabetes is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases with many short and long term complications. This paper presents an intelligent diagnostic system specifically developed for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, using rule-based reasoning and object-oriented methodology. The system accurately diagnoses Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes based on the sign-symptoms entered, and also provides an explanation to reasoning. We believe that great improvements can be provided to the medical practitioners and also the diabetics with the implementation of this system.

Government Sponsored Social Media And Public Forum Doctrine Under The First Amendment: Perils And Pitfalls, Lyrissa Lidsky Jul 2011

Government Sponsored Social Media And Public Forum Doctrine Under The First Amendment: Perils And Pitfalls, Lyrissa Lidsky

Faculty Publications

Between the extremes of no interactivity and complete interactivity, it is difficult to predict whether courts will label a government sponsored social media site a public forum or not. But it is precisely "in between" where government actors are likely to wish to engage citizens and where citizens are most likely to benefit from government social media initiatives. The goal of this article, therefore, is to provide guidance to lawyers trying to navigate the morass that is the U.S. Supreme Court's public forum jurisprudence in order to advise government actors wishing to establish social media forums.

A Descriptive-Correlational Study Exploring Post-Secondary Student Tracks Chosen By Learners With High Spatial Ability, Robert S. Mcgowan

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

People that process though using pictures rather than words have difficulty in school. Previous research has shown that characteristics of Spatial Learners, or people that process thought spatially, by thinking in pictures rather than words, have poor spelling, are less likely to graduate high school, have a lower grade average, are likely male, don't read instructions carefully, are late bloomers, have a bedroom that is disorganized, lose track of time and have difficulty memorizing words. Many of history's great problem solvers are believed to be highly spatial people.

It is theorized that the majority of highly spatial learners are not …

When Erving Goffman Was A Boy, Sherri Cavan Jul 2011

When Erving Goffman Was A Boy, Sherri Cavan

Bios Sociologicus: The Erving Goffman Archives

Like creating a mosaic, the bits and pieces of Erving Goffman’s life yield a picture of a complex man who lived in troubled times and through his writings changed the way whole generations saw the world. Looking at that life I chose to focus on his boyhood, from childhood through adolescence. My purpose is here descriptive, an ethnography of a childhood recounting events of Goffman’s early life and placing them in their social, historical and cultural context. That done, I will have a few words to say about the themes that I see in this narrative as well as some …
