Use Of Simulation To Reinforce Evidence-Based Collection Processes, Deborah Christeleit
Use Of Simulation To Reinforce Evidence-Based Collection Processes, Deborah Christeleit
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Proper collection of blood cultures is needed to identify pathogens causing serious infections and direct appropriate antibiotic therapy. Blood culture contamination can lead to longer hospital stays, incorrect antibiotic treatment, additional testing, and overall increased costs for the patient and hospital. Blood culture collection technique is the most important factor affecting contamination rates.
The purpose of this project was to determine the effect of simulation reinforcement of blood culture collection processes on the rate of contamination of blood cultures drawn by nurses in a community medical center emergency department.
This one-group before-and-after cohort study utilized a convenience sample of 50 …
Human Cytomegalovirus Ul97 Kinase Activity Modifies Cell Cycle Checkpoint Regulators, Rachel Brooke Gill
Human Cytomegalovirus Ul97 Kinase Activity Modifies Cell Cycle Checkpoint Regulators, Rachel Brooke Gill
All ETDs from UAB
Human cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection results in destructive infections in neonates and immunocompromised individuals. Being the primary congenital infection in the United States, it can often result in permanent neurological deficits in infants. The current therapies for CMV infections all target the viral DNA polymerase and also have dose-limiting toxicities. Isolates resistant to ganciclovir (GCV), the therapy of choice, can sometimes overwhelm immunocompromised hosts. Better therapies for this infection are required. The CMV UL97 kinase is a key enzyme in the treatment of CMV infection because it phosphorylates GCV. Additionally, maribavir (MBV) specifically inhibits UL97 kinase activity and inhibits viral replication. …
Identification And Characterization Of Novel Adenosine Cleavage Enzymes In Mycobacteria, Kajal Buckoreelall
Identification And Characterization Of Novel Adenosine Cleavage Enzymes In Mycobacteria, Kajal Buckoreelall

Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the leading infectious diseases in the world. An estimated one third of the world's population is infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causative pathogen of TB. With the emergence of drug resistant strains of the mycobacterium, and the HIV-TB coinfection epidemic, TB remains a global health emergency. Purine metabolism is an essential cellular component to all living cells. Previous studies have shown that differences exist between mycobacterial and human purine metabolism. One of the differences was in the metabolism of adenosine (Ado), whose cleavage was observed in mycobacterial cells whereas Ado cleavage is inefficient in human …
Elucidation Of The Elongated Fibrillar Structure Of Streptococcus Mutans Antigen I/Ii, Matthew Rodney Larson
Elucidation Of The Elongated Fibrillar Structure Of Streptococcus Mutans Antigen I/Ii, Matthew Rodney Larson
All ETDs from UAB
Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) is the causative agent behind dental caries, an infectious disease also known as tooth decay or dental cavities. S. mutans has a cell wall-attached protein known as Antigen I/II (AgI/II) utilized for bacterial adhesion to the tooth surface. Here we have solved the structures of both amino- and carboxy-terminal regions of the AgI/II molecule using X-ray crystallography. Using this structural information we have now built a tertiary model for AgI/II as a fibrillar protein. Further, we have functionally characterized AgI/II and determined minimal regions of AgI/II that are implicated in its adherence to the salivary agglutinin …
Decision Aid Models For Resource Sharing Strategies During Global Influenza Pandemics, Alfredo Santana Reynoso
Decision Aid Models For Resource Sharing Strategies During Global Influenza Pandemics, Alfredo Santana Reynoso
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Pandemic influenza outbreaks have historically entailed significant societal and economic disruptions. Today, our quality of life is threatened by our inadequate preparedness for the imminent pandemic. The key challenges we are facing stem from a significant uncertainty in virus epidemiology, limited response resources, inadequate international collaboration, and the lack of appropriate science-based decision support tools. The existing literature falls short of comprehensive models for global pandemic spread and mitigation which incorporate the heterogeneity of the world regions and realistic travel networks. In addition, there exist virtually no studies which quantify the impact of resource sharing strategies among multiple countries. This …
Tarnished Golden Years: Older Offenders With Mental Health Problems And Late Life First Time Offenders, Brianne Stanback
Tarnished Golden Years: Older Offenders With Mental Health Problems And Late Life First Time Offenders, Brianne Stanback
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Older offenders (offenders 50 years and older) are a distinct groups within the U.S. correctional system. Studies 1 and 2 were intended to investigate mental health and stressors among jailed older offenders.
Study 1 examined the prevalence rates of mental health disorders and explored the relationship between mental health disorders and stressors. Participants 50 years and older (N=330) from the 2002 wave of the Survey of Inmates in Local Jails (SILJ) were studied via descriptive analysis, factor analysis, and a logistic regression to determine which variables were related to the probability of having a mental health problem. 65.8% of participants …
Personal Narratives Of Women's Leadership And Community Activism In Cherkasy Oblast, Martha Kichorowska Kebalo
Personal Narratives Of Women's Leadership And Community Activism In Cherkasy Oblast, Martha Kichorowska Kebalo
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Ukraine's women's movement is part of a complex social field characteristic of formerly Soviet countries, but it also emerges from its own specific political history. Post-Soviet period, (neo-) nationalism, feminism and (neo-) socialism are significant forces shaping women's collective behavior. Their activism resonates with the pre-Soviet liberation struggle while it is shaped also by practices from the recent Soviet past. It also is sensitive to external pressures, including the agendas of Western aid and the Ukrainian diaspora.
This study accepts the emergence of non-state women's organizations as indicative of an incipient movement and examines this field of social activism in …
