Adoption Of Projected Mortality Table For The Slovenian Market Using The Poisson Log-Bilinear Model To Test The Minimum Standard For Valuing Life Annuities, Darko Medved, Aleš Ahčan, Jože Sambt, Ermanno Pitacco

Economic and Business Review

For the best estimate of life annuity provisions, the longevity risk of the insured population must be estimated. In this article, we present an application of the Poisson logbilinear model to construct life annuity tables for the Slovenian market. As data on the selection effect of annuity owners are not available for the Slovenian market, we have used selection statistics from UK data. We then compare those tables with the German annuity tables DAV 1994 R, which are the current minimum standard for valuing annuity-related liabilities in Slovenia. It is shown that current minimum standard underestimate longevity risk of the …

Partition Decoupling For Multi-Gene Analysis Of Gene Expression Profiling Data, Rosemary Braun, Gregory Leibon, Scott Pauls, Daniel Rockmore

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background:

Multi-gene interactions likely play an important role in the development of complex phenotypes, and relationships between interacting genes pose a challenging statistical problem in microarray analysis, since the genes involved in these interactions may not exhibit marginal differential expression. As a result, it is necessary to develop tools that can identify sets of interacting genes that discriminate phenotypes without requiring that the classification boundary between phenotypes be convex.

Results:

We describe an extension and application of a new unsupervised statistical learning technique, known as the Partition Decoupling Method (PDM), to gene expression microarray data. This method may be used …

When A Promotion Is Denied: The Effects Of Decision Stage On Perceptions Of Promotion And Price Fairness, Monika Kukar-Kinney, Lan Xia, Kent B. Monroe

Economic and Business Review

Marketers frequently use promotions to enhance sales and increase consumers’ perceptions of value. However, most promotions usually come with restrictions, such as time expiration, quantity or product model restriction, etc. In the present research, the effect of the stage in the purchase process when the consumer finds out about the restriction is investigated. The findings indicate that the later in the purchase process the consumer discovers the restriction, the greater is the perception that the effort invested into the purchase is wasted, consequently resulting in lower promotion and price fairness. This effect is mediated through the feeling of entitlement to …

Interest Rate Policy In China: The Impact Of Suppressed Deposit Rates On Household Income From 2000-2007, Zhuliang James Zhang

Undergraduate Economic Review

An often-overlooked impact of China’s policy of maintaining low interest has been the suppression of household interest income, which has increased the propensity of households to save while decreasing their consumption rates. This paper posits that from 2000 to 2007, deposit rates in China were suppressed annually by around 720 basis points, imposing an implicit tax on annual per-capita income of 12.8% on average. Raising deposit rates will increase household income and boost consumption in the medium-term if the Chinese government is able to initiate policy shifts that distribute the gains of economic growth more equitably to households. Research advised …
