Noise, Bifurcations, And Modeling Of Interacting Particle Systems, Luis Mier-Y-Teran-Romero, Eric Forgoston, Ira B. Schwartz

Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We consider the stochastic patterns of a system of communicating, or coupled, self-propelled particles in the presence of noise and communication time delay. For sufficiently large environmental noise, there exists a transition between a translating state and a rotating state with stationary center of mass. Time delayed communication creates a bifurcation pattern dependent on the coupling amplitude between particles. Using a mean field model in the large number limit, we show how the complete bifurcation unfolds in the presence of communication delay and coupling amplitude. Relative to the center of mass, the patterns can then be described as transitions between …

Section of Cardiothoracic Surgery

Background:Congenital heart disease (CHD) accounts for a major proportion of disease in the pediatric age group. The objective of the study was to estimate the cost of illness associated with CHD pre, intra and postoperatively, among Patients referred to a tertiary care hospital in Karachi, Pakistan. This is the first study conducted to estimate the cost of managing CHD in Pakistan.

Methods:

A prevalence based cost of illness Study Design was used to estimate the cost of cardiac surgery (corrective & palliative) for congenital heart defects in children Results:The mean age at the time of surgery in group …

Determinants Of Prostate Survival In Arizona: Demographic And Clinical Characteristics, Gudeta D. Fufaa Dec 2011

Determinants Of Prostate Survival In Arizona: Demographic And Clinical Characteristics, Gudeta D. Fufaa

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

In investigating the determinants of survival of prostate cancer cohorts, characterization of the cohort in terms of competing underlying causes of death would be appropriate. Atherosclerotic heart disease, bronchitis, acute myocardial infarction, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, and stroke were found to be the major causes of death among prostate cancer cohorts aside from prostate cancer. A population-based assessment of the codeterminants of mortality and a demographic and clinical determinant of prostate cancer survival was undertaken. Average survival time and survival curves of the various age categories were significantly different. The average survival time and survival curves of …

Elder Adult Abuse And Animal Welfare Issues: Development, Field Testing, And Dissemination Of Assessment Protocols, Frank R. Ascione, Terry Peak

Psychology Faculty Publications

With funding from the Kenneth A. Scott Charitable Trust, A KeyBank Trust, and in collaboration with the Utah Division of Aging and Adult Services, we developed a general protocol for assessing animal welfare issues in the in the lives of elder adults. We also developed a follow-up protocol that can be used in cases where elder adults have expressed concern about the welfare of their animals (including threatened and actual harm). Drafts of the protocols were reviewed by Utah Adult Protective Services personnel as well as experts in the field of gerontology. Final versions of the protocols were developed based …

Diseases And Causes Of Death In European Bats: Dynamics In Disease Susceptibility And Infection Rates, Kristin Mühldorfer, Stephanie Speck, Andreas Kurth Dec 2011

Diseases And Causes Of Death In European Bats: Dynamics In Disease Susceptibility And Infection Rates, Kristin Mühldorfer, Stephanie Speck, Andreas Kurth

KIP Articles

Bats receive increasing attention in infectious disease studies, because of their well recognized status as reservoir species for various infectious agents. This is even more important, as bats with their capability of long distance dispersal and complex social structures are unique in the way microbes could be spread by these mammalian species. Nevertheless, infection studies in bats are predominantly limited to the identification of specific pathogens presenting a potential health threat to humans. But the impact of infectious agents on the individual host and their importance on bat mortality is largely unknown and has been neglected in most studies published …

Agent-Based Model Of Aerial Ad-Hoc Network Market Potential, Christopher B. Watkins, Cihan H. Dagli Dec 2011

Agent-Based Model Of Aerial Ad-Hoc Network Market Potential, Christopher B. Watkins, Cihan H. Dagli

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Mobile Ad hoc NETworks (MANETs) have seen significant growth as a research topic in recent years. as opposed to a traditional network with a fixed node infrastructure, the nodes in a MANET are free to move and arbitrarily organize themselves while maintaining wireless communication with each other. the major benefit of MANETs is the lack of reliance on a fixed network infrastructure. the challenge is to dynamically route traffic through a set of mobile network nodes. MANETs represent a novel solution for providing internet access in aircraft. Currently, each aircraft maintains its own gateway to the internet using expensive satellite …

Need Fulfillment And Stay-Leave Behavior: On The Diagnosticity Of Personal And Relational Needs., Laura E. Vanderdrift, Christopher R. Agnew Dec 2011

Need Fulfillment And Stay-Leave Behavior: On The Diagnosticity Of Personal And Relational Needs., Laura E. Vanderdrift, Christopher R. Agnew

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

Need fulfillment has been found to be associated with numerous positive relationship outcomes, but its impact on stay–leave behavior is less clear. In the current study, we considered whether the fulfillment of different needs might differentially affect stay–leave behavior. We distinguished between needs that are personal in nature and those that are relational in nature. Central to our theoretical analysis is the interdependence-based contention that the fulfillment of different kinds of needs provides diagnostic information regarding a partner’s motives and intentions regarding a relationship. Using two-wave longitudinal data obtained from romantically involved participants, we tested the relative fit of two …

Correlation Of Angiographic Findings And Clinical Presentations In Unstable Angina, Ali Abdulamir Mohammad Al.Mossawi, Kasim Abbas Ismail

Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Unstable angina is usually related to acute thrombosis superimposed on a disrupted plaque. The highest; level of Braunwald classification of unstable angina can be used to assess the severity of clinical presentation. However the highest classes have not been directly correlated with thrombotic and complex lesions. OBJECTIVE: The study was done to clarify the correlation between angiographic findings and the most acute and / or severe clinical presentation in unstable angina. PATIENTS AND METHOD: We conducted a prospective study of 110 patients of unstable angina at Ibn-Albitar Center for Cardiac Surgery. All of these patients underwent cardiac catheterization, …
