Characterization Of Street Food Consumption In Palermo: Possible Effects On Health, Silvio Buscemi, Annamaria Barile, Vincenza Maniaci, John A. Batsis Oct 2011

Characterization Of Street Food Consumption In Palermo: Possible Effects On Health, Silvio Buscemi, Annamaria Barile, Vincenza Maniaci, John A. Batsis

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background: Street Food (SF) consists of out-of-home food consumption and has old, historical roots with complex social-economic and cultural implications. Despite the emergence of modern fast food, traditional SF persists worldwide, but the relationship of SF consumption with overall health, well-being, and obesity is unknown.

Methods: This is an observational, cross-sectional study. The study was performed in Palermo, the largest town of Sicily, Italy. Two groups were identified: consumers of SF (n = 687) and conventional restaurant food (RES) consumers (n = 315). Study subjects answered a questionnaire concerning their health conditions, nutritional preferences, frequency of consumption of SF and …

Higher Education As A Common Good In China: A Case Study For Ideas And Practices, Jiangang Zhu Oct 2011

Higher Education As A Common Good In China: A Case Study For Ideas And Practices, Jiangang Zhu

Higher Learning Research Communications

China began its modern system of higher education with the establishment of the former Peking University in Beijing in 1898. The traditional Confucian philosophy of education has been replaced dramatically by modern western philosophy. However, since the communist party came to power in 1949, the philosophy of higher education has experienced much more dramatic changes. In Mao’s time between 1949 and 1976, Maoism philosophy largely displaced Western, so-called capitalistic, philosophy and dominated Chinese higher education for almost 30 years.

Design Of A Retinal Tracking System For Jumping Spiders, Cristina Canavesi, Skye Long, Dennis Fantone, Elizabeth Jakob, Robert R. Jackson, Duane Harland, Jannick P. Rolland Oct 2011

Design Of A Retinal Tracking System For Jumping Spiders, Cristina Canavesi, Skye Long, Dennis Fantone, Elizabeth Jakob, Robert R. Jackson, Duane Harland, Jannick P. Rolland

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

We designed an optical system for tracking the retinal movement of a jumping spider as a stimulus is presented to it. The system, using all off-the-shelf optical components except for one custom aspheric plate, consists of three sub-systems that share a common path: a visible stimuli presentation sub-system, a NIR illumination sub-system, and a NIR retinal imaging sub-system. A 25 mm clearance between the last element and the spider ensures a stable positioning of the spider. The stimuli presentation system relays an image from a display to the spider eye, matching the 15 arcmin resolution of the two principal eyes …

Disengagement, Petra Tuns Oct 2011

Disengagement, Petra Tuns

Theses

Disengagement is a body of photographic work that recounts my memories of suffering from depression. My aesthetic is directly influenced by the pathology of the illness. My thesis aims to let the viewer witness how depression has impacted me, so they can understand the disease on a more personal level rather than a stereotypical image, such as TV commercials for anti-depression medication. I analyze both depression in art and the history of depression through the writings of Christine Ross, and Michel Foucault. Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalytic theory also inform my work. They are also the foundation from which I defend …

Family Communication Patterns And African-American Adolescent Females’ Self-Reported Use Of Condoms, Natasha Hibbert Oct 2011

Family Communication Patterns And African-American Adolescent Females’ Self-Reported Use Of Condoms, Natasha Hibbert

Theses

African-American females are the fastest growing HIV/AIDS population in the U.S. The best preventative measure after abstinence is condom usage. Although the importance of condom usage is widely publicized, it is not always adopted. In trying to identify ways to increase adolescents' condom usage, past research has shown that positive communication between parents/guardians and adolescents has increased their condom usage and caused condom usage to be more consistent. This pilot study explores the relationship between African-American adolescent females and parents/guardians and if open communication about sexual intercourse and contraceptive usage increases adolescent condom usage. Data have been collected from self-administered …

Shaping Topographies Of Home: A Political Ecology Of Migration, Carylanna Kathryn Taylor Oct 2011

Shaping Topographies Of Home: A Political Ecology Of Migration, Carylanna Kathryn Taylor

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Even from afar, transnational migrants influence how their households and communities of origin use natural resources. This study depicts the circulation of people, funds, and ideas within transnational families that extend from a Honduran village to the United States. Developing a "political ecology of migration" approach, I show how these circulations can reshape resource use practices and the socio-economic and bio-physical topographies of emigrants' former homes. The project advances anthropological thought by linking rich literatures on political ecology and transnationalism through a multi-method ethnography of transnational families. The study is also relevant to emigrants, community members, and practitioners interested in …

Participatory Action Research: Science And Social Change, Dora Raymaker

Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series

Participatory Action Research (PAR) is a general collaborative approach to inquiry that includes research "subjects" as members of the research team. Useful in any setting involving groups of people, PAR has revolutionized research with minority communities. Some "flavors" of PAR, such as Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) have been developed to address issues of power and privilege, to change dynamics between science, society, and minorities, and to enable and encourage systems change. This talk discusses the theory and practice of PAR as a research approach, drawing from real world examples in health sciences research with minority communities defined by disability or …

Relation Between Time Perspective And Delay Discounting: A Literature Review, Ursina Teuscher, Suzanne H. Mitchell Oct 2011

Relation Between Time Perspective And Delay Discounting: A Literature Review, Ursina Teuscher, Suzanne H. Mitchell

The Psychological Record

In this article, we examine the relation between delay discounting and future time perspective by reviewing how these concepts have been measured and quantified in order to assess their conceptual similarities. The extent to which the different measures are empirically related is reviewed by describing studies that have assessed both constructs and by comparing the variables that have been associated with variations in delay discounting and in time horizon. We suggest that both steep delay discounting and a short future time perspective are associated with a range of problematic and health-damaging behaviors, such as addictive disorders, risky behavior, poor school …

Contexts And Individual Differences As Influences On Consumers’ Delay Discounting, Gordon R. Foxall, John R. Doyle, Mirella Yani-De-Soriano, Victoria K. Wells Oct 2011

Contexts And Individual Differences As Influences On Consumers’ Delay Discounting, Gordon R. Foxall, John R. Doyle, Mirella Yani-De-Soriano, Victoria K. Wells

The Psychological Record

Delay discounting is often considered a universal feature of human choice behavior, but there is controversy over whether it is an individual difference that reflects an underlying psychological trait or a domain-specific behavior. Trait influence on discounting would manifest in (a) highly correlated discount rates for all decisions, regardless of context, and (b) the reflection of discounting behavior in psychometric measures of individual difference. We examined these propositions for consumers making hypothetical decisions with respect to financial returns, health outcomes, and vacation alternatives. Questionnaires were employed to assess discounting rates, and respondents’ (N = 74) cognitive styles were measured by …

Translational Neuroscience

Depression, a common neurological condition, is one of the leading causes of disability and suicide worldwide. Standard treatment, targeting monoamine transporters selective for the neurotransmitters serotonin and noradrenaline, is not able to help many patients that are poor responders. This study advances the development of sazetidine-A analogues that interact with α4β2 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) as partial agonists and that possess favorable antidepressant profiles. The resulting compounds that are highly selective for the α4β2 subtype of nAChR over α3β4-nAChRs are partial agonists at the α4β2 subtype and have excellent antidepressant behavioral profiles as measured by the mouse forced swim test. …
