Chronic Fluid Flow Is An Environmental Modifier Of Renal Epithelial Function, Andrew Resnick Oct 2011

Chronic Fluid Flow Is An Environmental Modifier Of Renal Epithelial Function, Andrew Resnick

Physics Faculty Publications

Although solitary or sensory cilia are present in most cells of the body and their existence has been known since the sixties, very little is been known about their functions. One suspected function is fluid flow sensing- physical bending of cilia produces an influx of Ca++, which can then result in a variety of activated signaling pathways. Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD) is a progressive disease, typically appearing in the 5th decade of life and is one of the most common monogenetic inherited human diseases, affecting approximately 600,000 people in the United States. Because ADPKD is a slowly progressing …

Master Transcription Factors Determine Cell-Type-Specific Responses To Tgf-Β Signaling, Alan C. Mullen, David A. Orlando, Jamie J. Newman, Jakob Lovén, Roshan M. Kumar, Steve Bilodeau, Jessica Reddy, Matthew G. Guenther, Rodney P. Dekoter, Richard A. Young Oct 2011

Master Transcription Factors Determine Cell-Type-Specific Responses To Tgf-Β Signaling, Alan C. Mullen, David A. Orlando, Jamie J. Newman, Jakob Lovén, Roshan M. Kumar, Steve Bilodeau, Jessica Reddy, Matthew G. Guenther, Rodney P. Dekoter, Richard A. Young

Paediatrics Publications

Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) signaling, mediated through the transcription factors Smad2 and Smad3 (Smad2/3), directs different responses in different cell types. Here we report that Smad3 co-occupies the genome with cell-type-specific master transcription factors. Thus, Smad3 occupies the genome with Oct4 in embryonic stem cells (ESCs), Myod1 in myotubes, and PU.1 in pro-B cells. We find that these master transcription factors are required for Smad3 occupancy and that TGF-β signaling largely affects the genes bound by the master transcription factors. Furthermore, we show that induction of Myod1 in nonmuscle cells is sufficient to redirect Smad3 to Myod1 sites. We …

Adipose Tissue Endocannabinoid System Gene Expression: Depot Differences And Effects Of Diet And Exercise, Tongjian You, Beth L. Disanzo, Xuewen Wang, Rongze Yang, Dawei Gong

Faculty Publications

Background: Alterations of endocannabinoid system in adipose tissue play an important role in lipid regulation and metabolic dysfunction associated with obesity. The purpose of this study was to determine whether gene expression levels of cannabinoid type 1 receptor (CB1) and fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) are different in subcutaneous abdominal and gluteal adipose tissue, and whether hypocaloric diet and aerobic exercise influence subcutaneous adipose tissue CB1 and FAAH gene expression in obese women.

Methods: Thirty overweight or obese, middle-aged women (BMI = 34.3 ± 0.8 kg/m2, age = 59 ± 1 years) underwent one of three 20-week weight …

Intrastate Switched Telephone Access Charges In Kentucky, Christopher Jepsen, Frank Scott, Jesse Zenthoefer Oct 2011

Intrastate Switched Telephone Access Charges In Kentucky, Christopher Jepsen, Frank Scott, Jesse Zenthoefer

CBER Research Report

Excerpt from the executive summary:

This report examines the economic consequences of the current access rate system for intrastate long-distance calls, governed by the Kentucky Public Service Commission. At the time Kentucky created an access rate system for telephone service in 1984, the main goal of telecommunication policy was universal wireline access. Since then the telecommunications landscape has changed dramatically, as well as current policy goals. New forms of communication and policy have emerged such as cellular phones and cable telephony, as well as the introduction of the National Broadband Plan and the strong desire both nationally and in Kentucky …

Modeling Nitrogen Loading In A Small Watershed In Southwest China Using A Dndc Model With Hydrological Enhancements, Jia Deng, Zaixing Zhou, Bo Zhu, Xunhua Zheng, Changsheng Li, X. Wang, Z. Jian Oct 2011

Modeling Nitrogen Loading In A Small Watershed In Southwest China Using A Dndc Model With Hydrological Enhancements, Jia Deng, Zaixing Zhou, Bo Zhu, Xunhua Zheng, Changsheng Li, X. Wang, Z. Jian

Faculty Publications

The degradation of water quality has been observed worldwide, and inputs of nitrogen (N), along with other nutrients, play a key role in the process of contamination. The quantification of N loading from non-point sources at a watershed scale has long been a challenge. Process-based models have been developed to address this problem. Because N loading from non-point sources result from interactions between biogeochemical and hydrological processes, a model framework must include both types of processes if it is to be useful. This paper reports the results of a study in which we integrated two fundamental hydrologic features, the SCS …

The Effects Of Expert Witness Testimony On Juror Verdict: Psychiatry Versus Psychology, La Shonine Gandy-Smith Oct 2011

The Effects Of Expert Witness Testimony On Juror Verdict: Psychiatry Versus Psychology, La Shonine Gandy-Smith

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of expert witness testimony on juror verdicts. We, further, assessed whether there would be a difference in the relative influence of MDs and PhD expert witnesses. Undergraduate and graduate students served as mock jurors and were presented with an insanity case which either (a) a PhD testified for the defense and a MD testified for the prosecution or (b) an MD testified for the defense and a PhD testified for the prosecution. After analysis of verdicts, an Insanity Defense Attitudes Survey, and specific witness credibility evaluations indicated no bias toward …
