Principles Of Sensorimotor Learning., Daniel M Wolpert, Jörn Diedrichsen, J Randall Flanagan

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

The exploits of Martina Navratilova and Roger Federer represent the pinnacle of motor learning. However, when considering the range and complexity of the processes that are involved in motor learning, even the mere mortals among us exhibit abilities that are impressive. We exercise these abilities when taking up new activities - whether it is snowboarding or ballroom dancing - but also engage in substantial motor learning on a daily basis as we adapt to changes in our environment, manipulate new objects and refine existing skills. Here we review recent research in human motor learning with an emphasis on the computational …

Soluble Expression, Purification And Characterization Of The Full Length Is2 Transposase, Leslie A. Lewis, Mekbib Astatke, Peter T. Umekubo, Shaheen Alvi, Robert Saby, Jehan Afrose

Publications and Research

Background The two-step transposition pathway of insertion sequences of the IS3 family, and several other families, involves first the formation of a branched figure-of-eight (F-8) structure by an asymmetric single strand cleavage at one optional donor end and joining to the flanking host DNA near the target end. Its conversion to a double stranded minicircle precedes the second insertional step, where both ends function as donors. In IS2, the left end which lacks donor function in Step I acquires it in Step II. The assembly of two intrinsically different protein-DNA complexes in these F-8 generating elements has been intuitively proposed, …

Faculty Publications

Technological advances in DNA recovery and sequencing have drastically expanded the scope of genetic analyses of ancient specimens to the extent that full genomic investigations are now feasible and are quickly becoming standard1. This trend has important implications for infectious disease research because genomic data from ancient microbes may help to elucidate mechanisms of pathogen evolution and adaptation for emerging and re-emerging infections. Here we report a reconstructed ancient genome of Yersinia pestis at 30-fold average coverage from Black Death victims securely dated to episodes of pestilence-associated mortality in London, England, 1348–1350. Genetic architecture and phylogenetic analysis indicate …

Hemolysis Of Blood Specimens: Increasing Time In The Emergency Department, Sherry Young, Julie Hiles Oct 2011

Hemolysis Of Blood Specimens: Increasing Time In The Emergency Department, Sherry Young, Julie Hiles

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)

Purpose: The nurses in a rural Emergency Department (ED) noted an increased incidence of hemolysis of blood specimens after adopting the practice of nurses obtaining blood specimens via a newly established intravenous site (IV), increasing throughput time in the ED. The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a significant difference in the proportion of hemolysis of blood specimens obtained from a newly inserted IV using a 20g Advant IV safety catheter and blood specimens obtained from a 21g-23g straight needle venipuncture. Design: Non-experimental descriptive quantitative retrospective design was selected to compare hemolysis of blood drawn via …

Two Tree Trimmers Die When Struck By Errant Semi Tractor-Trailer, Kentucky Injury Prevention And Research Center Oct 2011

Two Tree Trimmers Die When Struck By Errant Semi Tractor-Trailer, Kentucky Injury Prevention And Research Center

Fatality Case Reports--Motor Vehicle

One spring morning in 2010, three male tree trimmers set up a work site in a highway intersection at the base of a mountain. As one tree trimmer removed equipment from the truck, two other tree trimmers, 21- and 32-years old, posted signage in the intersection. The two tree trimmers were located on the shoulder of the highway. A semi tractor-trailer was driving down the mountain toward the intersection, when its brakes failed. To avoid hitting vehicles in front of the semi, the driver steered to the left, crossed the intersection, striking both tree trimmers with the semi tractor-trailer. Both …
