Extra Food Intake And Depressive Symptoms In Adolescents: Is There A Relationship?, Elizabeth Bradshaw Jan 2011

Extra Food Intake And Depressive Symptoms In Adolescents: Is There A Relationship?, Elizabeth Bradshaw

Theses

This pilot study explored the potential role of food on young people’s mental health. Specifically, the aim was to determine if a relationship exists between extra food intake and depressive symptoms in adolescents’ age 12-17 years. It has been documented that mental health problems in young people result from a complex interaction of risk and protective factors. Eating behaviours and food intake has been investigated in early adolescence (age 10-14), however the specific contribution of extra food on depressive symptoms in mid adolescence has not been determined.

Extra food intake and depressive symptoms were collected from girls and boys in …

Open Access And Liberal Education: A Look At Armenia, Azerbaijan And Georgia, D. Aram Donabedian, John Carey Jan 2011

Open Access And Liberal Education: A Look At Armenia, Azerbaijan And Georgia, D. Aram Donabedian, John Carey

Publications and Research

In the post-Soviet era, libraries in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia have faced increasing budgetary challenges. In response to socioeconomic restructuring and the introduction of private enterprise, libraries have been forced to seek alternatives to commercial publishing and licensing models. This paper will assess the status of the open access movement and of Internet filtering controls in the countries of the South Caucasus. It will also argue that developing open models for scholarly communications is crucial to the strengthening of liberal education and civic participation in these aspiring democracies. Libraries, in their role as providers of and advocates for shared information, …

Torture In The Eyes Of The Beholder, Mary-Hunter M. Mcdonnell, Loran F. Nordgren, George Loewenstein Jan 2011

Torture In The Eyes Of The Beholder, Mary-Hunter M. Mcdonnell, Loran F. Nordgren, George Loewenstein

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

This Article draws upon recent social psychological research to demonstrate the psychological difficulty of distinguishing between torture and enhanced interrogation. We critique the accuracy of evaluations made under the current torture standard using two constructs--reliability and validity--that are employed in the social sciences to assess the quality of a construct or metric. We argue that evaluations of interrogation tactics using the current standard are both unreliable and invalid. We first argue that the torture standard is unreliable because of the marked variation in the manner in which different jurisdictions interpret and employ it. Next, we draw on recent social psychological …

Civil-Military Relations In Medvedev's Russia, Stephen J. Blank Dr. Jan 2011

Civil-Military Relations In Medvedev's Russia, Stephen J. Blank Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The best recent scholarship on Russian civil-military relations explicitly addresses this issue’s importance for both domestic and external security. An inquiry into the present state of those relations under conditions of defense reform and the current international situation is of immense analytical and policy relevance for both domestic and external security in Russia. While the Russian regime is serious about military reform, it is encountering severe objections from the uniformed military, and the military has successfully persuaded the government to accept its expansive concept of the threats to Russia, i.e., its threat assessment. Therefore, we must closely follow those developments …

Redressing Deprivations Of Rights Secured By State Constitutions Outside The Shadow Of The Supreme Court's Constitutional Remedies Jurisprudence, Gary S. Gildin Jan 2011

Redressing Deprivations Of Rights Secured By State Constitutions Outside The Shadow Of The Supreme Court's Constitutional Remedies Jurisprudence, Gary S. Gildin

Faculty Scholarship

The second generation of state constitutionalism is now emerging. With the methodology of autonomous state constitutional protection more clearly defined, courts and legislatures are turning to the task of determining when, and from whom, they should award damages to citizens deprived of their state constitutional rights. State courts, as well as legislatures contemplating statutes authorizing damage actions, will be tempted to borrow United States Supreme Court interpretations of 42 U.S.C. §1983 in shaping civil relief for infringement of state constitutional rights. This article argues that the Supreme Court’s Section 1983 remedies doctrine is a product of statutory, structural and institutional …

Crumbling Infrastructure, Crumbling Democracy: Infrastructure Privatization Contracts And Their Effects On State And Local Governance, Ellen Dannin Jan 2011

Crumbling Infrastructure, Crumbling Democracy: Infrastructure Privatization Contracts And Their Effects On State And Local Governance, Ellen Dannin

Faculty Scholarship

Key arguments for privatizing public infrastructure range from providing money so cash-strapped governments can fix crumbling infrastructure and build much needed new infrastructure to shifting future financial risk from the public to a private contractor. The reality, though, is far different. Provisions commonly found in infrastructure privatization contracts make the public the guarantor of private contractors' expected revenues. Indeed, were it not for provisions that protect contractors from diminution of their expected returns, the contracts would be far shorter and much less complex. An effect of those contract provisions is to give private contractors a quasi-governmental status with power over …

The Integration Of Psychoeducation About Healing Environments And Placemaking And The Effect On Mental Health For Clients, Christienne D. Constabile Jan 2011

The Integration Of Psychoeducation About Healing Environments And Placemaking And The Effect On Mental Health For Clients, Christienne D. Constabile

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study was undertaken to determine the effect of integrating psychoeducation about healing environments and placemaking in the therapeutic setting. Additionally, this researcher and clinician proposed that if clinicians can empower clients to create a healing environment for themselves both in their private spaces and in their larger community, then such integration would facilitate improved mental health for clients. This researcher engaged in a theoretical study by examining the data on healing environments and placemaking on individuals and communities. At the basis of the study is the premise, as espoused by Kurt Lewin, that behavior is a function of the …

What Factors Deter Self-Identified White Anti-Racist Social Workers From Interrupting Acts Of Racism In Interpersonal Interactions, Mary Jane Panke Jan 2011

What Factors Deter Self-Identified White Anti-Racist Social Workers From Interrupting Acts Of Racism In Interpersonal Interactions, Mary Jane Panke

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Current National Association of Social Workers codes, mandates, and policies require members to work to end racism. Although there is a strong need for social workers to consistently act against racism there are times social workers choose not to interrupt racism in interpersonal interactions. This study was interested in learning how social workers understand their decisions not to act against racism to gain a better understanding of the barriers to interrupting racism. This information may assist social workers in meeting their personal and professional obligations to combat racism. Ten self-identified White anti-racist social workers were interviewed for this qualitative study. …

The Law And Politics Of Embryo Research In America, O. Carter Snead Jan 2011

The Law And Politics Of Embryo Research In America, O. Carter Snead

Journal Articles

The moral, legal, and public policy dispute over embryonic stem cell research (and related matters, such as human cloning) is the most prominent issue in American public bioethics of the past decade. The primary moral question raised by the practice of embryonic stem cell research is whether it is defensible to disaggregate (and thus destroy) living human embryos in order to derive pluripotent cells (stem cells) for purposes of basic research that may someday yield regenerative therapies. This essay will explain the legal and political dimensions of the embryonic stem cell debate as it has unfolded at the national level …

Child Support Guidelines: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly, Margaret F. Brinig, Douglas W. Allen Jan 2011

Child Support Guidelines: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly, Margaret F. Brinig, Douglas W. Allen

Journal Articles

Child support guideline systems do more than simply determine the amount of income to be transferred from the noncustodial to the custodial household. They create incentives, one way or another, for spouses to divorce and seek custody and support payments. We examine three cases found in North America, and find that the common method of income shares provides a decent guideline that does not create any perverse incentives for divorce. Percentage-of-obligor-income methods do worse than other systems, and can cause increases in divorce rates for families in which one spouse earns a high income. Finally, the Canadian system, which is …

Uranyl Reactions With Dithionite, L-Ascorbic Acid, And Supported Nanosized Zero-Valent Iron, Shanna Estes Jan 2011

Uranyl Reactions With Dithionite, L-Ascorbic Acid, And Supported Nanosized Zero-Valent Iron, Shanna Estes

All Theses

This work examined several reductants for remediation of low pH aqueous uranium contamination by reductive precipitation. Reductants included sodium dithionite, L-ascorbic acid, and nanosized zero-valent iron (nZVI). Additionally, the reductive capacity of nZVI successfully entrapped within a silicate matrix (cryogel) was also examined. This supported nZVI is expected to increase nZVI stability in the subsurface, and to provide a convenient in situ delivery mechanism for other remediation systems which may combine entrapped reductant and catalyst.
Fluorescence and absorbance spectroscopy were used to investigate the interaction between hexavalent uranium (U(VI), uranyl) and both sodium dithionite and L-ascorbic acid at pH 2. …

Differently Able: A Review Of Academic Library Websites For People With Disabilities, Mary Cassner, Charlene Maxey-Harris, Toni Anaya

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

This research is based on the Library Services for People with Disabilities Policy, which was approved by the American Library Association in 2001. The policy identified focus areas for libraries including library services, facilities, collections, and assistive technology. Library websites frequently convey this information to users. Our study examined and compared academic library websites for the differently able. What services do academic libraries offer to the differently able? Is there a basic level of services that libraries identify or should offer? Are websites for people with disabilities easily located from the library’s home page?

Adult Attachment Styles In The Workplace, Peter D. Harms Jan 2011

Adult Attachment Styles In The Workplace, Peter D. Harms

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Prior research has demonstrated that attachment styles are important antecedents of interpersonal relationship quality and psychological well-being. Despite this, the theory of attachment styles has been largely ignored by researchers interested in workplace phenomena. The present paper aims to explain the theory of attachment styles, why researchers have overlooked attachment styles as an antecedent of organizational behavior, and a possible means of reconciling attachment theory with current models of personality. Moreover, I will review what existing research has actually demonstrated in terms of linking attachment styles to leadership, trust, satisfaction, performance and other outcomes. Finally, I will explore what possible …

Cell Assembly Sequences Arising From Spike Threshold Adaptation Keep Track Of Time In The Hippocampus, Vladimir Itskov, Carina Curto, Eva Pastalkova, György Buzsáki Jan 2011

Cell Assembly Sequences Arising From Spike Threshold Adaptation Keep Track Of Time In The Hippocampus, Vladimir Itskov, Carina Curto, Eva Pastalkova, György Buzsáki

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

Hippocampal neurons can display reliable and long-lasting sequences of transient firing patterns, even in the absence of changing external stimuli. We suggest that time-keeping is an important function of these sequences, and propose a network mechanism for their generation. We show that sequences of neuronal assemblies recorded from rat hippocampal CA1 pyramidal cells can reliably predict elapsed time (15–20 s) during wheel running with a precision of 0.5 s. In addition, we demonstrate the generation of multiple reliable, long-lasting sequences in a recurrent network model. These sequences are generated in the presence of noisy, unstructured inputs to the network, mimicking …

Comparative Susceptibility Of Ostrinia Furnacalis, Ostrinia Nubilalis, And Diatraea Saccharalis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) To Bacillus Thuringiensis Cry1 Toxins, S. Y. Tan, B. F. Cayabyab, E. P. Alcantara, Y. B. Ibrahim, Fangneng Huang, Erin E. Blankenship, Blair D. Siegfried

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Transgenic corn hybrids that express toxins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) are highly effective against the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner), and the closely related Asian corn borer, Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenée). Since the registration of Bt corn hybrids in the U.S. in 1996, there has been a great deal of information generated on O. nubilalis. However, relatively little information exists for O. furnacalis. To help determine whether the information generated for O. nubilalis can be leveraged for decisions regarding the use of transgenic Bt corn against O. furnacalis, experiments were designed to determine whether the pattern of sensitivity …

Description of the role of resistance or quality of the host plant to insect pests, and their interaction with biocontrol agents is provided. A need to increase applications or find new alternatives and environmental impact towards non target insects, and the real cost of its use against the benefits is discussed.

Gene-Expression Signatures Can Distinguish Gastric Cancer Grades And Stages, Juan Cui, Fan Li, Guoqing Wang, Xuedong Fang, J. David Puett, Ying Xu Jan 2011

Gene-Expression Signatures Can Distinguish Gastric Cancer Grades And Stages, Juan Cui, Fan Li, Guoqing Wang, Xuedong Fang, J. David Puett, Ying Xu

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

Microarray gene-expression data of 54 paired gastric cancer and adjacent noncancerous gastric tissues were analyzed, with the aim to establish gene signatures for cancer grades (well-, moderately-, poorly- or un-differentiated) and stages (I, II, III and IV), which have been determined by pathologists. Our statistical analysis led to the identification of a number of gene combinations whose expression patterns serve well as signatures of different grades and different stages of gastric cancer. A 19-gene signature was found to have discerning power between high- and low-grade gastric cancers in general, with overall classification accuracy at 79.6%. An expanded 198-gene panel allows …

A Computational Method For Prediction Of Excretory Proteins And Application To Identification Of Gastric Cancer Markers In Urine, Celine S. Hong, Juan Cui, Zhaohui Ni, Yingying Su, David Puett, Fan Li, Ying Xu Jan 2011

A Computational Method For Prediction Of Excretory Proteins And Application To Identification Of Gastric Cancer Markers In Urine, Celine S. Hong, Juan Cui, Zhaohui Ni, Yingying Su, David Puett, Fan Li, Ying Xu

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

A novel computational method for prediction of proteins excreted into urine is presented. The method is based on the identification of a list of distinguishing features between proteins found in the urine of healthy people and proteins deemed not to be urine excretory. These features are used to train a classifier to distinguish the two classes of proteins. When used in conjunction with information of which proteins are differentially expressed in diseased tissues of a specific type versus control tissues, this method can be used to predict potential urine markers for the disease. Here we report the detailed algorithm of …

Regulation Of Gene Expression In Ovarian Cancer Cells By Luteinizing Hormone Receptor Expression And Activation, Juan Cui, Brooke M. Miner, Joanna B. Eldredge, Susanne W. Warrenfeltz, Phuongan Dam, Ying Xu, David Puett Jan 2011

Regulation Of Gene Expression In Ovarian Cancer Cells By Luteinizing Hormone Receptor Expression And Activation, Juan Cui, Brooke M. Miner, Joanna B. Eldredge, Susanne W. Warrenfeltz, Phuongan Dam, Ying Xu, David Puett

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

Background: Since a substantial percentage of ovarian cancers express gonadotropin receptors and are responsive to the relatively high concentrations of pituitary gonadotropins during the postmenopausal years, it has been suggested that receptor activation may contribute to the etiology and/or progression of the neoplasm. The goal of the present study was to develop a cell model to determine the impact of luteinizing hormone (LH) receptor (LHR) expression and LH-mediated LHR activation on gene expression and thus obtain insights into the mechanism of gonadotropin action on ovarian surface epithelial (OSE) carcinoma cells.

Methods: The human ovarian cancer cell line, SKOV-3, was stably …

Topology Analysis Of Wireless Sensor Networks For Sandstorm Monitoring, P. Wang, Z. Sun, Mehmet C. Vuran, M. A. Al-Rodhaan, A. M. Al-Dhelaan, I. F. Akyildiz Jan 2011

Topology Analysis Of Wireless Sensor Networks For Sandstorm Monitoring, P. Wang, Z. Sun, Mehmet C. Vuran, M. A. Al-Rodhaan, A. M. Al-Dhelaan, I. F. Akyildiz

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Sandstorms are serious natural disasters, which are commonly seen in the Middle East, Northern Africa, and Northern China. In these regions, sandstorms have caused massive damages to the natural environment, national economy, and human health. To avoid such damages, it is necessary to effectively monitor the origin and development of sandstorms. To this end, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) can be deployed in the regions where sandstorms generally originate so that sensor nodes can collaboratively perform sandstorm monitoring and rapidly convey the observations to remote administration center. Despite the potential advantages, the deployment of WSNs in the vicinity of sandstorms faces many …
