Male Anorexia: In The Modern 2011, Barbara Wallen-Adams Jan 2011

Male Anorexia: In The Modern 2011, Barbara Wallen-Adams

McNair Poster Presentations

It has been reported that homosexuality is a risk factor for males with anorexia. However, it is unclear whether it is a specific risk factor for eating pathology or just a common risk factor associated with psychopathology. If social stigmatization of homosexuality can cause general psychological suffering that express itself as a discomfort with sexual orientation, poor self-esteem, depression, and disordered eating, than homosexuality may act as a general risk factor in itself. It can also be interrelated to certain aspects that distinctively increase the risk for males developing anorexia, such as increased identification with the male gender roles (Munen …

Gelding The Lily: How The Bankruptcy Code's Promotion Of Marriage Leaves It Impotent, Tiffany R. Harper Jan 2011

Gelding The Lily: How The Bankruptcy Code's Promotion Of Marriage Leaves It Impotent, Tiffany R. Harper

Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal

This Article challenges the logic of limiting benefits in the Code to married debtors and argues that awarding benefits based on marital status reduces the efficacy of the Code as marriage rates continue to decline in the United States. This Article also explores how the availability of these benefits is dictated by individual states' definitions of marriage and determination of which of their citizens can legally marry. Thus, the reach and force of the Code is further limited by the discrepancy between individual states' definitions of marriage and DOMA. Thus, the steady decline in marriage rates and the continued rise …

Infection With Chlamydia Pneumoniae In Neuronal Cells Alters The Expression Of Genes Involved In Apoptosis And Autophagy Pathways, Annette K. Slutter Jan 2011

Infection With Chlamydia Pneumoniae In Neuronal Cells Alters The Expression Of Genes Involved In Apoptosis And Autophagy Pathways, Annette K. Slutter

PCOM Biomedical Studies Student Scholarship

Dysfunctions in cellular mechanisms such as apoptosis and autophagy have been implicated in the neurodegeneration associated with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Autophagy in AD pathogenesis has been linked to the endosomal-lysosomal system, which has been shown to play a role in amyloid processing. Studies have suggested that apoptosis may contribute to the neuronal cell loss observed in AD; however, there is no evidence of the apoptotic process leading to terminal completion. Aβ1-42 has been shown to induce apoptosis in neurons and may be an initiating factor in AD. Our previous studies demonstrated that neurons infected with C. pneumoniae are resistant to …

The Relationship Between Leader-Member Exchange And Job Satisfaction: Measuring Lmx Quality And Job Satisfaction Of Supervisors And Subordinates, Colleen M. Hayden

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

There is an abundance of literature focusing on the relationship between leader-member exchange (LMX) quality and job satisfaction of subordinates. The purpose of this study was to further examine the relationship between the leader-member exchange (LMX) quality and job satisfaction of subordinates as well as introduce the analysis of this relationship for supervisors into the literature. This non-experimental, correlational study focused on the analysis of 22 pairs of supervisor and subordinate LMX and job satisfaction survey responses. The data were analyzed to determine the relationship between: (1) subordinate LMX quality and job satisfaction; (2) supervisor LMX quality and job satisfaction; …

Sibs Remembered: Online Support And Resources For Bereaved Siblings, Candace Beck Jan 2011

Sibs Remembered: Online Support And Resources For Bereaved Siblings, Candace Beck

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The relationship that exists between siblings is unique, significant, and often lifelong, and to lose a sibling to death impacts the surviving sibling for a lifetime. There are many factors that can affect the bereaved sibling's grief responses, such as developmental factors, funeral attendance, cause of death, family dynamics, and time since the death. Interventions for the bereaved include individual, family, or group therapy, and support groups. Unfortunately, surviving siblings are often the "forgotten mourners" who are not connected to supportive services, and/or the community is lacking in programming for assisting bereaved children. Given the unique aspects of sibling bereavement …

A Positive Psychological Approach To Student Impairment: A Model For Schools, Jessica M. Kajfasz Jan 2011

A Positive Psychological Approach To Student Impairment: A Model For Schools, Jessica M. Kajfasz

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Despite increasing interest in the issue of clinician impairment over the past 25 years, relatively little research has been conducted regarding the occurrence and management of impairment during the predoctoral and trainee stages of clinical psychology education. This is a particularly notable gap in the literature, given the unique stressors associated with that stage of professional development that may make students and trainees especially vulnerable to impairment. Failing to properly address this issue at an institutional level can present training programs with a variety of potential problems, including legal repercussions, resource drain, impact upon the overall student body, and possible …

Comparing The Temporal Stability Of Self-Report And Interview Assessed Personality Disorder., Douglas B. Samuel, Christopher J. Hopwood, Emily B. Ansell, Leslie C. Morey, Charles A. Sanislow, John C. Markowitz, Shirley Yen, M Tracie Shea, Andrew E. Skodol, Carlos M. Grilo

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

Findings from several large-scale, longitudinal studies over the last decade have challenged the long held assumption that personality disorders (PDs) are stable and enduring. However, the findings, including those from the Collaborative Longitudinal Personality Disorders Study (CLPS; Gunderson et al., 2000), rely primarily upon results from semistructured interviews. As a result, less is known about the stability of PD scores from self-report questionnaires, which differ from interviews in important ways (e.g., source of the ratings, item development, and instrument length) that might increase temporal stability. The current study directly compared the stability of the DSM-IV PD constructs assessed via the …

Screening Butternut And Butternut Hybrids For Resistance To Butternut Canker, James R. Mckenna, Michael E. Ostry, Keith E. Woeste Jan 2011

Screening Butternut And Butternut Hybrids For Resistance To Butternut Canker, James R. Mckenna, Michael E. Ostry, Keith E. Woeste

Department of Forestry & Natural Resources Faculty Publications

Butternut (Juglans cinerea) is being killed throughout its native range by the fungus Sirococcus clavigignenti-juglandacearum (Scj). In recent years, many disease-free trees have been determined to be complex hybrids with an admixture of Japanese walnut (J. ailantifolia). We challenged 5-year-old trees from two progeny tests with Scj in 2008. The first test (northern Indiana), planted in 2003, had 37 diverse families (n=319). Thirty-two of these seedling families were derived from a grafted orchard. Five additional families were collected from hybrid trees. The second test (southern Indiana), planted in 2004, had 12 pure butternut half-sib …

Elders’ Attitudes Toward Extending The Healthy Life Span, Victor G. Cicirelli Jan 2011

Elders’ Attitudes Toward Extending The Healthy Life Span, Victor G. Cicirelli

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

Despite continuing debate between anti-aging researchers seeking major life span extension and concerned gerontologists and bioethicists, elders’ views have received little research attention. Study aimed to relate elders’ attitudes toward strong life span extension to psychosocial and background factors. Participants were 109 American elders (65% women) aged 60-99 (M = 77.08, SD = 9.05). Measures included attitudes toward living long and living forever, Desired Age, Death Acceptance, Goal Seeking, Internality, and background variables (age, gender, marital status, education, religion, health). Attitudes were more positive toward an extended life span than living forever (p < .01). In regression analyses, more positive attitudes were related to greater Desired Age, less Death Acceptance, greater Goal Seeking, and greater Internality, and to lower age and non-Christian religious affiliation. Qualitative analyses explored goals for various periods of additional life. Elders’ positive attitudes toward extended life need consideration by experts debating this issue.
