Development Of A Novel Methodology For The Identification Of Voc Emission Sources In Indoor Environments Based On The Material Emission Signatures And Air Samples Measured By Ptr-Ms, Kwanghoon Han
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering - Dissertations
One of the recent important challenges in the research field of indoor air quality is the identification of indoor Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emission sources to clearly pinpoint the sources of concern in a field condition. This study represents the first attempt in developing a new technique to find the sources that may be invisible or hidden based on the inspection even of experts when a building with problems of indoor air quality is suspected. The objectives of this study were 1) to determine VOC emission signatures specific to nine typical building materials by using an on-line analytical monitoring device, …
Tradition As Justification: The Case Of Opposite-Sex Marriage, Kim Forde-Mazrui
Tradition As Justification: The Case Of Opposite-Sex Marriage, Kim Forde-Mazrui
University of Chicago Law Review
A central point of contention in the national debate over same-sex marriage is the importance of preserving tradition. That debate also features prominently in constitutional litigation over bans on same-sex marriage. Opponents of such bans argue that tradition is an illegitimate justification for the bans, while defenders of traditional marriage contend that tradition is not only a legitimate justification, but is in fact sufficiently important to withstand heightened judicial scrutiny. This Article assesses tradition as a justification for laws challenged on equal protection grounds, with a focus on laws that limit marriage to opposite-sex couples. The Article makes two main …
Issues On Clean Diesel Combustion Technology Using Supercritical Fluids: Thermophysical Properties And Thermal Stability Of Diesel Fuel, Ronghong Lin
Biomedical and Chemical Engineering - Dissertations
The clean diesel combustion technology using supercritical fluids is aimed to both improve fuel economy and reduce harmful emissions. This novel process involves preparation, injection and combustion of supercritical fuel/diluents mixtures. Design and development of this new process require a deep understanding of fuel properties. The current study has attempted to address three fuel property related issues: fuel surrogates, diffusivity and thermal stability.
Fuel surrogates are often used in engine research to mimic real fuel properties. In this work, ten diesel fuel surrogates were investigated, and the ability of these surrogates to predict diesel fuel properties was evaluated. It was …

Expanding Regional Renewable Governance, Hannah J. Wiseman
Expanding Regional Renewable Governance, Hannah J. Wiseman
Scholarly Publications
Energy drives economies and quality of life, yet accessible traditional fuels are increasingly scarce. Federal, state, and local governments have thus determined that renewable energy development is essential and have passed substantial requirements for its use. These lofty goals will fail, however, if policymakers rely upon existing institutions to govern renewable development. Renewable fuels are fugitive resources, and ideal property for renewable technology is defined by the strength of the sunlight or wind that flows over it. When a potential site for a utility-scale development is identified, a new piece of property, which I call a “renewable parcel,” is superimposed …

Spider Cognition, Robert R. Jackson, Fiona R. Cross
Spider Cognition, Robert R. Jackson, Fiona R. Cross
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Spiders, having minute brains, were once considered simple, instinct-driven automatons, but research on spider biology is revealing increasing evidence of their cognitive abilities. In this review, we discuss the complex, flexible behaviour of spiders, especially salticids, and highlight how sometimes the cognitive character of spider behaviour closely parallels that of much bigger animals. This includes the use of selective attention (both visual and olfactory) and the use of planned detours. The implications of these findings, and how they relate to bigger issues traditionally associated with big-brain animals, such as 'representation' and 'mind', are discussed. Also discussed are issues relating to …

Sex Pheromone Composition And Reproductive Isolation In Two Busseola Species (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) In Kenya, A. E. Félix, P. A. Calatayud, B. Le Ru, J. F. Silvain, B. Frérot
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Closely related species provide an interesting and useful model to understand mate communication diversification. Pre-mating isolation is the result of selection processes and is achieved by utilization of different sex pheromones, but also by different ecological and life traits such as geographic distribution, host-plant specialization and allochrony of sexual behavior. Here, we report sex pheromone identifications and pre-mating isolation of two closely related species of stemborers: Busseola segeta and the yet undescribed Busseola nov. sp., developing on different host-plants and in different geographical locations in Kenya. GC-MS analyses showed that the two species produced the same pheromone components, but in …

Isolation, Phylogeny And Evolution Of The Symrk Gene In The Legume Genus Lupinus L., Frédéric Mahé, Dragomira Markova, Rémy Pasquet, Marie Thérèse Misset, Abdelkader Aïnouche
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
SymRK is one of the key genes involved in initial steps of legume symbiotic association with fungi (mycorrhization) and nitrogen-fixing bacteria (nodulation). A large portion of the sequence encoding the extracellular domain of SYMRK was obtained for 38 lupine accessions and 2 outgroups in order to characterize this region, to evaluate its phylogenetic utility, and to examine whether its molecular evolutionary pattern is correlated with rhizobial diversity and specificity in Lupinus. The data suggested that, in Lupinus, SymRK is a single copy gene that shows good phylogenetic potential. Accordingly, SymRK provided additional support to previous molecular phylogenies, and shed additional …
Leading The Multiethnic Church: Help From New Metaphors And The Leadership Challenge, Elizabeth Childs Drury
Leading The Multiethnic Church: Help From New Metaphors And The Leadership Challenge, Elizabeth Childs Drury
Great Commission Research Journal
Success in leading the multiethnic church (MEC) eludes assessment because of the variety of congregational configurations and the unique intercultural environment. This article describes how leadership in one MEC harmonizes with and differs from basic cultural standards as expressed in James Kouzes and Barry Posner’s The Leadership Challenge. It follows an earlier case study (published in the Summer 2010 issue) about weaknesses that emerged at a DC-area MEC when Dan, the beloved pastor, resigned. Three new categories describe designs: the mall, the cinema, and the blend. Six new metaphors describe relationships among different cultural groups: renters, investors, neighbors, coworkers, siblings, …

Patient Empowerment And Multimodal Hand Hygiene Promotion: A Win-Win Strategy., Maryanne Mcguckin, Julie Storr, Yves Longtin, Benedetta Allegranzi, Didier Pittet
College of Population Health Faculty Papers
Patient empowerment is a new concept in health care that has now been extended to the domain of patient safety. Within the framework of the development of the new World Health Organization (WHO) Guidelines on Hand Hygiene in Health Care, the authors conducted a review of the literature from 1997 to 2008 to identify the evidence supporting programs aimed at encouraging patients to take an active role in their care. Patient empowerment is an integral part of the WHO hand hygiene multimodal strategy. Hand hygiene promotion strategies that have demonstrated evidence of successfully empowering patients include one or all of …
Access To Information On Safe Abortion: A Harm Reduction And Human Rights Approach, Joanna Erdman
Access To Information On Safe Abortion: A Harm Reduction And Human Rights Approach, Joanna Erdman
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
With convergence-divergence as an organizing theme, this Article explores harm reduction and human rights as conceptual approaches to and discourses about unsafe abortion. The vehicle for this exploration is access to safer-use information on medication abortion, namely women’s self-administration of the drug misoprostol. More specifically, this Article focuses on the Sanitary Initiative Against Unsafe Abortion (“the Uruguay Model”) as an actualized model or prototype of access to information through physician-patient consultation in restrictive legal environments. On convergence, this Article seeks to test the claim that international human rights law imposes government obligations to provide, and to refrain from interfering with …

Are Canadians Providing Advance Directives About Health Care And Research Participation In The Event Of Decisional Incapacity?, Gina Bravo, Marie-France Dubois, Carole Cohen, Sheila Wildeman, Janice Graham, Karen Painter, Suzanne Bellemare
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
Objective: Advance planning for health care and research participation has been promoted as a mechanism to retain some control over one’s life, and ease substitute decision making, in the event of decisional incapacity. Limited data are available on Canadians’ current advance planning activities. We conducted a postal survey to estimate the frequency with which Canadians communicate their preferences about health care and research should they become incapacitated. Method: We surveyed 5 populations (older adults, informal caregivers, physicians, researchers in aging, and research ethics board members) from Nova Scotia, Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia. We asked respondents whether they had expressed …

Restorative Justice, Euthanasia, And Assisted Suicide: A New Arena For Restorative Justice And A New Path For End Of Life Law And Policy In Canada, Jennifer Llewellyn, Jocelyn Downie
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
This article examines the current Canadian legal approach to euthanasia and assisted suicide, highlights some of the problems with it, and offers a novel alternative to the current traditionally criminalized prohibitive regime. The authors first describe a restorative justice approach and explain the differences between such an approach and the traditional approach currently in use. They then explain how a restorative justice approach could be implemented in the arena of assisted death, acknowledging the potential challenges in implementation. The authors conclude that taking a restorative justice approach to euthanasia and assisted suicide could enable movement in the seemingly intractable public …

The Arctic Council At 15 Years: Edging Forward In A Sea Of Governance Challenges, David Vanderzwaag
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
With the impacts of climate change on the Arctic, including the thinning and decreasing extent of sea ice and projected dramatic increases in access to and development of regional resources, the adequacy of existing governance arrangements for the Arctic is increasingly being questioned. Through a two-part format, this article reviews how the Arctic Council is faring as the key regional governance institution for the Arctic since being established pursuant to a Declaration adopted by the eight Arctic States in September 1996. How the Council has edged forward the regional cooperation agenda through its six working groups and Ministerial meetings is …
The Precautionary Approach And The International Control Of Toxic Chemicals: Beacon Of Hope, Sea Of Confusion And Dilution, David Vanderzwaag
The Precautionary Approach And The International Control Of Toxic Chemicals: Beacon Of Hope, Sea Of Confusion And Dilution, David Vanderzwaag
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
Toxic chemicals in the environment are a continuing concern. Nearly 80,000 chemicals are on the market in the United States; of those, 200 synthetic chemicals are found in measurable quantities in the bodies of Americans. More than 5 billion kilograms of toxic pollutants are released or transferred each year in North America. Even more alarming, basic toxicological information is lacking for most these chemicals.
Long-range transport of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), chemicals that are persistent and bioaccumulate, is a special concern particularly in the Arctic, which acts as a "sink." Examples of POPs include various pesticides, such as DDT, chlordane, …

Canada’S Species At Risk Act And Atlantic Salmon: Cascade Of Promises, Trickles Of Protection, Sea Of Challenges, David Vanderzwaag, Maria Cecilia Engler Palma, Jeffrey Hutchings
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
This article reviews through a three-part format the role and efficacy of the Species at Risk Act (SARA) in trying to save SARA-listed inner Bay of Fundy (iBoF) Atlantic salmon and other Atlantic salmon populations at risk from the brink of extinction. The cascade of SARA promises is first discussed, including: the independent assessment of the status of the species based on best available scientific information; the protection of listed species, their residences and critical habitat; and the two-stage recovery planning process. The trickles of protection actually delivered by SARA in relation to Atlantic salmon are next described, including the …
New First Principles? Assessing The Internet's Challenges To Jurisdiction, Teresa Scassa, Robert J. Currie
New First Principles? Assessing The Internet's Challenges To Jurisdiction, Teresa Scassa, Robert J. Currie
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
The globalized and decentralized Internet has become the new locus for a wide range of human activity, including commerce, crime, communications and cultural production. Activities which were once at the core of domestic jurisdiction have moved onto the Internet, and in doing so, have presented numerous challenges to the ability of states to exercise jurisdiction. In writing about these challenges, some scholars have characterized the Internet as a separate “space” and many refer to state jurisdiction over Internet activities as “extraterritorial.” This article examines these challenges in the context of the overall international law of jurisdiction, rather than focusing on …
The Way It Was In Health Policy, And Probably Will Be: Learning Lessons By Rashi Fein (Book Review), Rick Mayes
The Way It Was In Health Policy, And Probably Will Be: Learning Lessons By Rashi Fein (Book Review), Rick Mayes
Political Science Faculty Publications
Learning Lessons by Rashi Fein is an enjoyable memoir from a scholar and policy adviser unlike any other. Fein’s influential involvement in health care policy dates back to John F. Kennedy’s administration, and his career as a leading health economist paralleled the significant growth in the political influence of health economists following the enactment of Medicare and Medicaid in 1965. Now an emeritus professor of the economics of medicine at Harvard Medical School, Fein writes here about the lessons he learned in medicine, economics, and public policy. His view of the policy process, as a way of coming to …
Social Contracts, Fair Play, And The Justification Of Punishment, Richard Dagger
Social Contracts, Fair Play, And The Justification Of Punishment, Richard Dagger
Political Science Faculty Publications
In recent years, the counterintuitive claim that criminals consent to their own punishment has been revived by philosophers who attempt to ground the justification of punishment in some version of the social contract. In this paper, I examine three such attempts—“contractarian” essays by Christopher Morris and Claire Finkelstein and an essay by Corey Brettschneider from the rival “contractualist” camp—and I find all three unconvincing. Each attempt is plausible, I argue, but its plausibility derives not from the appeal to a social contract but from considerations of fair play. Rather than look to the social contract for a justification of punishment, …
Entrapment Or Freedom: Enforcing Customary Property Rights Regimes In Common-Law Africa, Sandra F. Joireman
Entrapment Or Freedom: Enforcing Customary Property Rights Regimes In Common-Law Africa, Sandra F. Joireman
Political Science Faculty Publications
This chapter examines customary property rights and the role of customary leaders in enforcing those property rights from an institutionalist perspective. The issue of societal benefit is at the forefront of this chapter, which proceeds in three parts. Subchapter 13.2 discusses the pervasiveness of customary tenure and customary authority structures throughout Sub-Saharan Africa and their genesis in the colonial era. Subchapter 13.3 notes the lack of consistency between statutory law and customary law, which leads to a pluralistic legal setting. This part also identifies the winners and losers within customary legal systems. Subchapter 13.4 discusses how we can evaluate customary …
