Psychometric Properties Of Spanish Translations Of The Gamblers' Beliefs Questionnaire And The Gambling Self-Efficacy Questionnaire, Walter Ryan Winfree Nov 2011

Psychometric Properties Of Spanish Translations Of The Gamblers' Beliefs Questionnaire And The Gambling Self-Efficacy Questionnaire, Walter Ryan Winfree

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Hispanics are the fastest growing minority group in the U.S. and there is a need for valid assessment measures for researchers and clinicians that work with Spanish-speaking gamblers. Spanish versions of self-report measures of gamblers' cognitive distortions (Gamblers' Beliefs Questionniaire; Steenbergh, Meyers, Whelan, & May, 2002) and self-efficacy to control gambling behavior (Gambling Self-Efficacy Questionaire; May, Whelan, Steenbergh, & Meyers, 2003) were translated and psychometrically evaluated in a sample of 219 Hispanics residing in the South U.S. The GBQ and GSEQ showed good internal consistencies (Alpha = .95; Alpha = .99, respectively). Factor analytic data revealed factor structures similar to …

Mechanical Characterization Of Lung Epithelial Cells At The Migration Front By Atomic Force Microscopy, Alexander Bada Nov 2011

Mechanical Characterization Of Lung Epithelial Cells At The Migration Front By Atomic Force Microscopy, Alexander Bada

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Reconstitution of the epithelial barrier following injury is important for regular lung function. Alveolar epithelial cells repair wounds by initially spreading and migrating into denuded areas, which causes the cells to undergo substantial cytoskeletal remodeling, and later proliferating. Thus, the hypothesis of this thesis is that the mechanical properties of alveolar epithelial cells near the wound edge change over time due to cytoskeletal alterations. Elastic modulus (E) values of immortalized mouse lung epithelial cells at the wound edge fixed at different times after wounding were measured using atomic force microscope indentation with custom-developed analyses and post-processing methods. The results show …

Psychosocial Correlates Of Psychological Distress And Arousal In Prostate Cancer Survivors Undergoing Active Surveillance, Natalie Escobio Bustillo Nov 2011

Psychosocial Correlates Of Psychological Distress And Arousal In Prostate Cancer Survivors Undergoing Active Surveillance, Natalie Escobio Bustillo

Open Access Theses

Active Surveillance (AS) for the clinical management of prostate cancer (PC) is a treatment option for men with low-risk PC. Screening procedures have led to the overdetection of PCs that would have never caused problems. Active treatment (e.g., surgery or radiation) for these non-aggressive tumors may not be necessary given the slow-growing nature of PC. AS provides a way to monitor the disease and delay treatment-related compromises on quality of life until clinically indicated (e.g., rising PSA level). However, the intensive monitoring in AS may be a stressful experience and lead to greater anxiety, an emotional state that has been …

Using Lectinmicroarrays To Identify Regulatory Mechanisms For Mammalian Glycosylation, John F. Rakus Nov 2011

Using Lectinmicroarrays To Identify Regulatory Mechanisms For Mammalian Glycosylation, John F. Rakus

Chemistry Faculty Research

Glycosylation involves the post-translational addition of carbohydrates to protein molecules and is an intricate and indispensable biochemical process. Study of this complicated network of interactions is hindered by the lack of a coding template analogous to the genetic code, and by the vast structural complexity inherent to carbohydrate polymers. We use lectins (non-enzymatic carbohydrate-binding proteins of non-immunological origin) as microarray probes to identify carbohydrate features expressed on cellular surfaces. Specifically, we utilized lectin microarray technology to investigate the differences in carbohydrates expressed by the cell lines of the Nation Cancer Institute’s NCI-60 panel. Our investigation identified tissue-specific expression differences in …

Teen Stress And Substance Use Problems In Coös: Survey Shows Strong Community Attachment Can Offset Risk, Karen T. Van Gundy, Meghan L. Mills

Carsey Publications

This brief explores how social stress and community attachment are related to problem alcohol and drug use for girls and boys in Coös County, New Hampshire. The brief uses survey data from the Coös Youth Study, which includes self-reported information from 564 Coös youth who were in seventh and eleventh grades in 2008, and who were surveyed again one year later (in 2009) when they were in eighth and twelfth grades. Nearly one-fourth of youth in Coös County (22 percent of boys and 23 percent of girls) reported at least one alcohol or drug use related problem. The authors note …

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Patents

A method for preparing a stable dispersion of a camptothecin, camptothecin prodrug, or analog thereof for administration to a patient in need thereof includes preparing a solution of the camptothecin, wherein the solution has a pH which places substantially an entirety of that camptothecin in a carboxylate form. The camptothecin may be a neutral camptothecin. The solution is next loaded into a liposome including at least one lipid, which may be a phospholipid. An intraliposomal pH is maintained which preserves substantially an entirety of the camptothecin in the carboxylate form. The liposomal dispersion is administered to an individual in need …
