In the later part of the twentieth century, the continued growth in high school and college dropout rates led to the development of educational reform measures that would address an education model that was seen as applicable to a disproportionate percentage of the nation’s students, thereby leaving the majority of schools and their students to struggle (Simmons, 2008). Efforts to increase matriculation between secondary and postsecondary institutions must be connected at all levels of education, which is critical to educational reform—worldwide (Zhou, 2008). Due to its ability to increase the rigor of high school curriculum, an increasingly favored measure of …

Exchangeability Of Brief And Abbreviated Intelligence Tests: Illuminating The Influence On Error Variance Components On Iqs, Sarah Mccallum Irby
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This study examined the relations between and the exchangeability of IQs from four brief and abbreviated intelligence tests. All four tests were administered to 40 college students and scored by one set of examiners and later scored by a second examiner. All IQs were submitted to a Generalizability theory analysis to examine the relative contributions of error variance components of “test” and “examiner” and their interactions in producing variance in IQs relative to the object of measurement, individual differences in general intelligence. Despite very strong mean reliability coefficients (i.e., .91 to .96), the resulting dependability coefficient was .75, which indicated …

Bouncing Back: The Viability And Sustainability Of A School-Based Therapeutic Summer Camp For Adolescents Exposed To Violence, Darcus Fayetta Greene
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The scholarship on exposure to violence suggests that traumatic and violent experiences place students at risk for exhibiting externalizing and internalizing behaviors that may impede academic performance. Moreover, the lack of effective programs and services has perpetuated the problem of unmet or underserved mental health needs. The purpose of the present study was to understand mental health clinicians' perspectives of best practices within the context of a two-week, school-based summer camp designed to provide therapeutic services to middle school students who have been exposed to violence. Bronfenbrenner's ecology of human development and Vygotsky's principle of the zone of proximal development …
A Method For Determining The Appropriate Spatial Resolution To Detect Ligustrum Sinense In Shelby Farms Park Using Worldview-2 Multi-Spectral Satellite Imagery., Rodney Quarles

The purpose of this thesis is to determine the appropriate scale to detect Chinese Privet (Ligustrum sinense Lour.), an invasive plant species in Shelby Farms Park. To test predictions that accuracy of detection of Chinese Privet varies with the spatial resolution of WorldView-2 satellite imagery. Supervised maximum likelihood classifications are performed upon WorldView-2, 8-band multispectral image mosaics at 2, 4, 6, and 8 meter pixel resolutions. The appropriate scale for detection was selected by performing accuracy assessments of selected land use classes, which were shown to be the least spectrally separable from Chinese Privet, using confusion matrices to report user’s …
Chemotherapy Induced Mucositis: A Novel Porcine Model, Jamee Covington Martin
Chemotherapy Induced Mucositis: A Novel Porcine Model, Jamee Covington Martin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Chemotherapy-induce mucositis (CIM) is a dose-limiting side effect of cancer therapy with concurrent nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and decreased food consumption. Of the pediatric population approximately 40% of patients receiving standard dose and 100% of patients receiving high dose chemotherapy are afflicted. Although scientific advancements have improved pediatric cancer survival rates, occurrence of mucositis decreases quality of life, increases treatment interruptions or even delays therapy, and often reduces the dose. Currently, there are no relevant animal models studying the entire gastrointestinal tract (GIT). Based on these findings, we decided to develop a novel porcine model for CIM. Examination of the …

This study exposed the ramifications of childhood sexual abuse in regards to an African American woman's self-representation by contextualizing this experience within the larger cultural context; thereby, illuminating issues regarding race, class, gender, and relationships with others. Framed within a feminist theoretical paradigm, this study integrated the sociological context of race and culture using Black Feminist thought (Collins, 2000) and Relational Cultural Theory, which examines women's psychological identity development (Jordan, 2010; Miller, 1976). To illustrate an African American woman's negotiation of existence as a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, this qualitative study employed the research methodology autoethnography. Employing autoethnography provides …

In Vitro Evaluation Of Electrospun Chitosan Mats Crosslinked With Genipin As Guided Tissue Regeneration Barrier Membranes, Peter A. Norowski Jr.
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Guided tissue regeneration (GTR) is a surgical technique commonly used to exclude bacteria and soft tissues from bone graft sites in oral/maxillofacial bone graft sites by using a barrier membrane to maintain the graft contour and space. Current clinical barrier membrane materials based on expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) and bovine type 1 collagen are non-ideal and experience a number of disadvantages including membrane exposure, bacterial colonization/biofilm formation and premature degradation, all of which result in increased surgical intervention and poor bone regeneration. These materials do not actively participate in tissue regeneration, however bioactive materials, such as chitosan, may provide advantages such …
Weighted Meta Analytic Procedure For Pooling High Throughput Biological Data, Xiaodong Zhou
Weighted Meta Analytic Procedure For Pooling High Throughput Biological Data, Xiaodong Zhou
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
High throughput technologies such as DNA microarray have been widely used to simultaneously measure the expressions of thousands of genes. Analysis of such data often yields to high false positive and false negative rates. When multiple datasets addressing the same scientific question are available, it is clear that integrating them can be more informative, with superior operating characteristics, than any individual study. Pooling the P-values of the statistical tests from the individual studies presents a feasible and proven solution for integrating heterogeneous datasets. However, pooling these P-values with equal weights may result in suboptimal statistical power because of the unequal …

Protecting Human Rights: An Examination Of Judicial Independence And Treaty Compliance, Maegan Kay Traynom
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
States agree to many human rights protections through treaty ratification. Often, however, states do not comply with the treaties they have ratified and human rights are abused. This study focuses on the role of the judiciary in holding the state accountable to their obligations under human rights treaties. Specifically, examining whether having an independent judiciary positively correlates with being compliant with human rights treaties. This is done through an exploratory case study of Brazil, which examines both its general court system and its military court system. While the general court system is very indepedent, the military court system is not. …

Solution Conformation Of Biologically Active Peptides As Determined By Hydrogen/Deuterium Exchange And Mass Spectrometry, Deepa Kunapuram
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This research is focused on appplying mass spectrometry based methods to understand the conformational changes of bioactive peptides in solution. In this dissertation, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) coupled with hydrogen/deuterium exchange (HDX) has been employed to probe the secondary structure of selected peptides in membrane-mimetic enviroments. The membrane-mimetic systems used in our study include water and trifluoroethanol (TFE). HDX of the amide protons in native proteins depends on the solvent accessibility and spatial arrangement of amino acid residues, thus providing information about the secondary structure of a protein. A total of six biologically active peptides have been chosen for …

Human FACT (facilitates chromatin transcription) consists of the proteins SPT16 and SSRP1 and acts as a histone chaperone in the (dis)assembly of nucleosome (and thereby chromatin) structure during transcription and DNA replication. We identified a Plasmodium berghei protein, termed FACT-L, with homology to the SPT16 subunit of FACT. Epitope tagging of FACT-L showed nuclear localization with high expression in the nuclei of (activated) male gametocytes. The gene encoding FACT-L could not be deleted indicating an essential role during blood-stage development. Using a 'promoter-swap' approach whereby the fact-l promoter was replaced by an 'asexual blood stage-specific' promoter that is silent in …

Botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs) are extremely potent toxins that can contaminate foods and are a public health concern. Anti-BoNT antibodies have been described that are capable of detecting BoNTs; however there still exists a need for accurate and sensitive detection capabilities for BoNTs. Herein, we describe the characterization of a panel of eight monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) generated to the non-toxic receptor-binding domain of BoNT/A (H(C)50/A) developed using a high-throughput screening approach. In two independent hybridoma fusions, two groups of four IgG MAbs were developed against recombinant H(C)50/A. Of these eight, only a single MAb, F90G5-3, bound to the whole BoNT/A protein …
Federalizing Medicaid, Nicole Huberfeld
Federalizing Medicaid, Nicole Huberfeld
Faculty Scholarship
Medicaid fosters constant tension between the federal government and the states, and that friction has been exacerbated by its expansion in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (PPACA). Medicaid was an under-theorized and underfunded continuation of existing programs that retained two key aspects of welfare medicine as it developed: bias toward limiting government assistance to the “deserving poor,” and delivery of care through the states that resulted in a strong sense of states’ rights. These ideas regarding the deserving poor and federalism have remained constants in the program over the last forty-six years, but PPACA changes one …

The Library As An Effective Tool For Understanding The Health Status Of Rural Communities In Nigeria, Nnenna A. Obidike, Idoko Nkechi
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Library in any community is regarded as an information base centre for storage and retrieval of vital information which could be used for community development and national planning. The library is the gateway to information (Anasi, 2010). It is a place where information is acquired, processed, repackaged, preserved and disseminated. Every community (country) aims at improving the health of its citizens and plan outreach annually (Ogunbode, 2004). This objective would be better achieved where libraries are seen as effective tools for understanding the health status of rural communities in Nigeria. Librarians are meant to partner with community health workers to …

Sources Of Funds In Academic Libraries In Delta State, Nigeria, Janet Onomeh Ubogu, Rose B. Okiy
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Academic libraries are those attached to universities, polytechnics, college of education and other similar institutions of higher learning. The importance of funding in providing quality library service cannot be overemphasized. It is the glue that holds the building, collection and staff together and allows the library to attain its goals. As such, money can be considered the soul of the library. Inadequate funds impede the effectiveness of any library (Anafulu, 1997).
It is absolutely essential for a library to posses the resources that will enable it meet its goals. Beautiful building, well trained staff and modern information storage and retrieval …
