Essays On Consumer Charity, Joseph Thomas Paniculangara Jan 2011

Essays On Consumer Charity, Joseph Thomas Paniculangara

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Two essays comprise this doctoral dissertation on consumers and their charitable donations. The overall objective is to investigate the role of psychological distance in charitable donations, with each essay dealing with a different moderator of this relationship. In the first essay, I study the interactive effect of social distance and processing mode (affect vs. cognition). Specifically, people tend to donate more if they use their emotions rather than cognition as diagnostic inputs for decision making, especially when donor and recipient are separated by greater social distance. This may be because affect-driven and cognition-driven donors are influenced by different goals. Affect-driven …

Higher Education Professional Pilot Faculty Qualifications: Are The Stakes Rising?, David C. Ison

Applied Aerospace Science

"Within the aviation research literature there have been numerous studies that have either included or focused upon the attributes of associated faculty. Although such studies provide compelling data about these individuals, trends or changes in requirements for faculty are not easily identified within the findings. Of particular concern is the fact that credentialization, the escalation of required educational attainment and certification, has been permeating throughout higher education in the United States. It is of interest to see if such pressures are also infiltrating the collegiate aviation environment. Further, data about trends can help future faculty prepare for possible employment, it …

Another Role For Securities Regulation: Expanding Investor Opportunity, Jasmin Sethi Jan 2011

Another Role For Securities Regulation: Expanding Investor Opportunity, Jasmin Sethi

Fordham Journal of Corporate & Financial Law

Securities regulation can be justified on a number of grounds, but furthering the expansion of opportunities for wealth accumulation across sectors of the population has generally not been utilized as an argument for regulation. This article demonstrates how an opportunities-based perspective, informed by the findings from interdisciplinary research, could alter securities policy in four areas: (1) enhancing access to information and financial institutions; (2) requiring disclosures; (3) impacting the behavioral biases of investors; and (4) aligning the incentives of investment professionals to better facilitate the wealth accumulation of their clients. The implications of applying an opportunities-based approach to financial regulation …

The Legal Environment For Foreign Private Equity Firms In China, Lawrence Zhan Zhang

Fordham Journal of Corporate & Financial Law

From a little-known, foreign concept to a critical component of the country’s increasingly multi-layered capital markets, private equity in China has undergone tremendous development in the past decade. This Note first reviews the representative deals of major U.S. private equity firms (Bain Capital, Blackstone, Carlyle, KKR, TPG, Warburg Pincus, and the private equity arms of Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley) in China, and profiles leading Chinese private equity firms and their relationship with the U.S. firms. Then, the Note analyzes the evolving web of laws that regulates China’s private equity industry, with special attention to the rise of RMB funds, …

Brain Drain Out Of Hungary And Its Inhibitors, Eliza Plous Jan 2011

Brain Drain Out Of Hungary And Its Inhibitors, Eliza Plous

Capstone Collection

In many Central and Eastern European countries, a poor economic climate at home forces young people to make their careers in the West. Hungary is no exception. After spending time both studying and working in Hungary, the author chose to investigate the phenomenon known as “brain drain”: the large-scale emigration of young, educated individuals from Hungary as they seek higher salaries and more promising career prospects in neighboring Western European countries. This paper offers a comprehensive report on the economics of the brain drain problem, and on the opinions of young Hungarians who are currently seeking employment abroad; it also …

The Evolution Of Islamic Arches Till 1250, Ehsan Abushadi Jan 2011

The Evolution Of Islamic Arches Till 1250, Ehsan Abushadi

Papers, Posters, and Presentations

This paper discusses the development of, and influences on, the form of arches in the Islamic period up until the year 1250; using examples from across the empire while charting the development from area to area through time. It starts with the semicircular arch and how that developed into the pointed arch with its varieties. The paper also explores how the shouldered arch developed, leading to the tri-lobed and keel arch. On the other hand, there is no clear development path for the horse shoe arch which suggests that it may have developed in various parts of the world at …

Area Studies Library Organizations And Multi-Disciplinary Collection And Research: The Latin American Experience, Mark L. Grover

Collaborative Librarianship

National and international library organizations are important in the academic community because they provide a venue for discussing new methods and ideas that improve the ability of their members to function in their jobs. They also support practical projects that cannot be done at the local level but require the coordination and activities of several libraries or organizations. This paper describes three projects of the Seminar on the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials (SALALM), an area studies library organization that resulted in benefits important to Latin American library collections in the United States. In particular, this paper discusses the …

Art In The Light Of Knowing A Cognitive Approach To The Creative Process, Victor M. Knoe Jan 2011

Art In The Light Of Knowing A Cognitive Approach To The Creative Process, Victor M. Knoe

HIM 1990-2015

Art can be an elusive concept. Neither an outsider nor a professional artist is immune to abstractions in the attempt to describe it. Every individual must necessarily come from their own, unique perspective. The obstacles that we experience in defining the essence of art can be better understood if we see them as a gauge for our historical period. Given the limits of our contemporary conditions, it seems impossible that we may ever overcome the vast chasms that imprison us. We are discouraged to build bridges, at almost every turn, by the suggestive hopelessness of the abysmal distances between us. …

Social Implications From Agricultural Taskscapes In The Southwestern Amazon, John H. Walker Jan 2011

Social Implications From Agricultural Taskscapes In The Southwestern Amazon, John H. Walker

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Across the Americas, but particularly in the Amazon Basin, precolumbian farmers invested their labor in features such as canals, causeways, and raised fields, creating agricultural landscapes. These landscapes required organized action in order to build and maintain them. Such actions can be usefully described as "tasks" to draw specific connections between communal work and landscape features (Ingold 1993). Using two parallel examples front the precolumbian Bolivian Amazon, this article presents landscape features as correlates of the variety and scale of tasks that compose the processes of creating and managing them. Data come from remote sensing and pedestrian survey. The execution …

Seed Bank Changes With Time-Since-Fire In Florida Rosemary Scrub, Jennifer J. Navarra, Nancy Kohfeldt, Eric S. Menges, Pedro F. Quintana-Ascencio Jan 2011

Seed Bank Changes With Time-Since-Fire In Florida Rosemary Scrub, Jennifer J. Navarra, Nancy Kohfeldt, Eric S. Menges, Pedro F. Quintana-Ascencio

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

The soil seed bank plays a central role in the regeneration of obligate seeding species in fire-prone habitats. We evaluated how seed density and species composition changed with time-since-fire in the Florida, USA, rosemary scrub community. Because fire affects habitat availability and plant demographic variation, we predicted that soil seed density would be low in recently burned and long-unburned stands and high at intermediate time-since-fire. Seed bank soil samples were collected from a chronosequence of time-since-fire composited from two trials conducted in 1992-1993 and 2008-2009: two sites each of 3, 6, 10, and 24 years post-fire, and 3 long-unburned (similar …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this action research study was to observe the effectiveness of the utilization of an instructional tool in my three mathematics classes. Using a tool, called an Interactive Student Notebook, or ISN, the goal was to equip my students with a tool that would allow them to take and keep daily notes as well as conduct guided and independent practice in an organized fashion. I believed that my students would therefore utilize their notes and class work as a reference and study tool to assist them with their homework as well as studying for assessments. The aim of this research objective was to determine if the presence and style of grave substructures were influenced by sex or age. Although not statistically significant, GIS analysis revealed that most of the graves in the Kellis 2 cemetery have no associated substructures, but of those that did have associated substructures, …

Connecticut's Fourth Congressional District: History, Politics, And The Maverick Tradition, Gary L. Rose Jan 2011

Connecticut's Fourth Congressional District: History, Politics, And The Maverick Tradition, Gary L. Rose

Sacred Heart University Press Books

Connecticut's Fourth Congressional District: History, Politics, and the Maverick Tradition is a case study of one of the most unique congressional districts in the United States. Located in Fairfield County, the fourth district is a bedroom community close to New York City. The district's close proximity to Wall Street, the tendency of the district's constituents to elect free-thinking congresspersons, and the wealth and celebrity status of many district residents have resulted in a setting which can be described as an anomaly in the larger context of congressional politics. Contents: Introduction -- Connecticut's Fourth Congressional District: geography and demographics -- A …

Essay: Weighing The Potential Of Citizen Redistricting, Justin Levitt Jan 2011

Essay: Weighing The Potential Of Citizen Redistricting, Justin Levitt

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

As they do every ten years, this year state legislatures across the country are redrawing legislative district lines to reflect population shifts and ensure equal representation for each district. In 2010, California voters passed a proposition granting the California Citizens Redistricting Commission control over the drawing of congressional lines. This Symposium Essay examines the potential for redistricting by an independent group of citizens such as the Citizens Redistricting Commission. First, it explores the nature of the redistricting process, a process often explained as fundamentally political, and argues, instead, that the process is both political and pre-political. This Essay then examines …

Development's Victim Or Its Beneficiary?: The Impact Of Oil And Gas Development On The Fort Berthold Indian Reservation, Raymond Cross Jan 2011

Development's Victim Or Its Beneficiary?: The Impact Of Oil And Gas Development On The Fort Berthold Indian Reservation, Raymond Cross

Faculty Law Review Articles

This article assesses whether oil and gas development on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation, given the critical geographic, legal, and socio-cultural differences which set it apart from the rest of North Dakota, will bring with it potentially devastating and unmanageable impacts that may overwhelm the tribal people of that reservation. The article seeks to fill an analytic gap in the existing oil and gas scholarship that has not, in the author's estimation, given sufficient regard to development's unique rights and impacts in Indian Country.

The Journey To Jesus: John 4:19-26, Andrew Hagen Jan 2011

The Journey To Jesus: John 4:19-26, Andrew Hagen

Global Tides

John 4:19-26 is a part of Jesus’ conversation with the Samaritan woman at the well. This portion of the conversation includes Jesus’ first revelation of himself as the Messiah and the only way to the Father in what Eric John Wyckoff calls an “astonishing self-revelation unparalleled in its explicitness.” Jesus’ later claims develop these ideas further (John 8:24, 28, 58; 13:19; 18:5) but this scene serves to not only reveal Jesus as the Messiah-Christ but also to demonstrate how Jesus transcends all the expectations which are associated with the title.

Evolution Of Small Putative Group I Introns In The Ssu Rrna Gene Locus Of Phialophora Species, Scott O. Rogers Jan 2011

Evolution Of Small Putative Group I Introns In The Ssu Rrna Gene Locus Of Phialophora Species, Scott O. Rogers

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: Group I introns (specifically subgroup IC1) are common in the nuclear ribosomal RNA genes of fungi. While most range in length from more than 200 to nearly 1800 nucleotides (nt) in length, several small putative (or degenerate) group I introns have been described that are between 56 and 81 nt. Although small, previously we demonstrated that the PaSSU intron in the rRNA small subunit gene of Phialophora americana isolate Wang 1046 is capable of in vitro splicing using a standard group I intron pathway, thus qualifying it as a functional ribozyme. Findings. Here, we describe eight short putative group …
