Ship To Shore: Inuit, Early Europeans, And Maritime Landscapes In The Northern Gulf Of St. Lawrence, William W. Fitzhugh, Anja Herzog, Sophia Perdikaris, Brenna Mcleod

School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications

Recent research at Hare Harbor on the Quebec Lower North Shore in the northeastern Gulf of St. Lawrence reveals great potential for archaeological and historical research on Basque and other early European activities in the northwestern North Atlantic. Although considerable data have been retrieved from Red Bay, Labrador, and a few other sixteenth-century sites in the Strait of Belle Isle and Gulf of St. Lawrence, archaeological knowledge of the early European phase of North American history in this region is limited, and information about post-sixteenth-century Basque occupations is nearly nonexistent. This chapter reports on a multicomponent site with late sixteenth-century …

Effects Of Participation In Paid Membership Organizations On Entrepreneurial Success, Michele K. Masterfano Jan 2011

Effects Of Participation In Paid Membership Organizations On Entrepreneurial Success, Michele K. Masterfano

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Research into entrepreneurial networking activities has ignored an aspect that is important to the entrepreneurs—does it make sense to pay dues to an organization that promises networking opportunities to help build their business? This study looked at that aspect of networking by comparing revenue growth rates and average number of employees between those businesses whose owners belong to paid membership organizations and those who do not. No differences were found between the two groups of entrepreneurial firms. While there are still benefits to joining these organizations, entrepreneurs should not expect to grow their business because of membership.

Democratic Education Only For Some: Secondary Schooling In Northern Uganda, Philip Kelly, Stephen Odama Jan 2011

Democratic Education Only For Some: Secondary Schooling In Northern Uganda, Philip Kelly, Stephen Odama

Curriculum, Instruction, and Foundational Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article analyzes the effects of the political, social and cultural contexts of secondary education in northern Uganda. Specifically, the authors examine interactions between several factors with the schooling system, including

  • post-colonial curriculum,
  • centralized examination system,
  • several decades of war and instability,
  • poverty, and
  • intra-national and inter-tribal prejudice and discrimination.

Informing the analysis is the fact that Uganda is a democracy and thus has certain democratic responsibilities to its children and students. To explore these issues, the lenses of democratic theory and critical theory are employed.

Ethnographic Introduction Of Coping In A Timber-Dependent Community, Levin Welch Jan 2011

Ethnographic Introduction Of Coping In A Timber-Dependent Community, Levin Welch

McNair Scholars Research Journal

The effects of socioeconomic change on individuals is a central theme of sociology. In order to understand how society functions the impacts of social change on individuals must be examined. In extreme cases, where a community’s economy is dependent on a single resource, change can hit hard and fast. Most research on these communities is quantitative and has been successful in identifying social problems associated with resource dependence, but people react in the context of local history and value systems. Most studies have been limited in their examination of this context. This has been recognized by researchers who have argued …

United States National Park Service: Publications

The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve encompasses 10,894 acres in eastern Kansas, just north of Strong City. This park unit was created on November 12, 1996, and is the first to protect a nationally significant example of the once vast tall grass prairie ecosystem. Of the 400,000 square miles of tall grass prairie that once covered the North American continent, less than four percent remains, prin1arily in the Flint Hills. The park unit is primarily rocky upland prairies and deep-soiled prairies in the lowlands. It also contains some wet prairie ravines, riparian forests and some former cropland and restored prairie. These …

Aclu V. Miami-Dade County School Board: Reading Pico Imprecisely, Writing Undue Restrictions On Public School Library Books, And Adding To The Collection Of Students' First Amendment Right Violations, Katherine Fiore

Villanova Law Review (1956 - )

The article discusses the case, American Civil Liberties Union of Florida Inc. (ACLU) v. Miami-Dade County School Board. ACLU alleges that the Board violated the students' First Amendment Right of free access to ideas because it removed a library book based on personal biases. The author disputes the Eleventh Circuit's decision favoring the board with the Supreme Court's Pico standard requiring investigation of motives since the cited reason of educational unsuitability is deemed insufficient.

Human-Centered Design To Support Flexibility And Adaptability In Airport Surface Management, Alicia Borgman Fernandes, Phillip J. Smith Jan 2011

Human-Centered Design To Support Flexibility And Adaptability In Airport Surface Management, Alicia Borgman Fernandes, Phillip J. Smith

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2011

Airport surface delays can impact airport surface congestion, operational costs, environmental emissions, and passenger satisfaction. We report on structured interviews and observational studies at two US airports with different approaches to managing surface delays. Each approach requires human judgment to set and adapt control parameters to manage departure flows. We contrast these approaches in terms of: 1) distribution of roles and responsibilities; 2) human judgments required; 3) enforcement of flight operator compliance; and 4) tools for coordination and decision support. Guidance is provided for designing and implementing human-centered surface management programs based on an analysis of these approaches.

Addressing Transboundary Haze Through Asean: Singapore’S Normative Constraints, H. Varkkey Jan 2011

Addressing Transboundary Haze Through Asean: Singapore’S Normative Constraints, H. Varkkey

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Since 1982, Southeast Asia has experienced almost annual ‘haze’ pollution, caused by smoke from grass, forest and peat fires mostly in Indonesia. The haze affects the health of some 75 million people and the economies of six ASEAN nations. It is the region’s first transboundary environmental crisis that ASEAN is attempting to address collectively. ASEAN level interaction is often guided by the ASEAN Way, and a common debate is whether these norms constrain states from interacting effectively at the regional level. This paper will address this debate using interviews and material compiled during fieldwork in Singapore. While Singapore was one …

Meaning Correlates Of Value Orientations, Shulamith Kreitler

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

The purpose was to explore the relations between value orientations and meaning assignment tendencies. The hypotheses were that values would be related to a certain number of meaning variables that would be similar in three cultural groups. The participants were 150 individuals of both genders living in Israel. They are from three cultural communities (50 participants each): Israeli, French, and Russian. They were administered the values inventory PQ IV by Schwartz (1992) and the Meaning Test by Kreitler and Kreitler (1990a). The relations between the values of hedonism, power, and benevolence and the meaning variables were analyzed by correlations. The …
