Sig En La Nube: Websig Para La Enseñanza De La Geografía, Andrew J. Milson Jan 2011

Sig En La Nube: Websig Para La Enseñanza De La Geografía, Andrew J. Milson

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications - Archive

There is no doubt among most geography educators that GIS is an important tool for teaching and learning, but its use has been slowed by issues such as the cost of the software and the management of large spatial data files. The move to cloud computing is one trend that is promising for GIS in education. The "cloud" refers to a virtual network that provides many users with access to files, services, and applications. In this article I argue that cloud computing and WebGIS have the potential to transform geography education. I will describe three case studies that make use …

Nonvoters: Doing Nothing To Change The Government They Hate, Geoffrey N. Mciver Jan 2011

Nonvoters: Doing Nothing To Change The Government They Hate, Geoffrey N. Mciver

Political Science Theses and Capstones

The sporadic and often dismal voter turnout of the American public is often regarded as a hole in the democratic model. This research examines the influence of an individual‘s attitude about their government and how it affects their voting habits. Literature in the past has isolated demographic makeup as the reason for nonvoting, i.e. education or income. However, the nonvoter‘s state of mind in relation to their general feelings toward government and the social contract has been broadly overlooked. A new measure of an individual‘s attitude toward government was created using a collection of survey questions centered on a person‘s …

Receptivity To Library Involvement In Scientific Data Curation: A Case Study At The University Of Colorado Boulder, Kathryn Lage, Barbara Losoff, Jack M. Maness Jan 2011

Receptivity To Library Involvement In Scientific Data Curation: A Case Study At The University Of Colorado Boulder, Kathryn Lage, Barbara Losoff, Jack M. Maness

University Libraries: Faculty Scholarship

Increasingly libraries are expected to play a role in scientific data curation initiatives, i.e., "the management and preservation of digital data over the long-term." This case study offers a novel approach for identifying researchers who are receptive toward library involvement in data curation. The authors interviewed researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder and, after analysis, created eight design "personas." Each persona represents an aggregation of researcher attributes and can be used to target strategic relationships for nascent or emerging data management initiatives. These personas are applicable to any academic library seeking to provide data curation support.

Sociology And Human Rights Education: Beyond The Three Generations?, Mark Frezzo Jan 2011

Sociology And Human Rights Education: Beyond The Three Generations?, Mark Frezzo

Societies Without Borders

This article examines the uses and limitations of the prevailing classificatory schema in the field of human rights—a tripartite framework that delineates first-generation civil and political rights ensuring liberty, second-generation economic and social rights promoting equality, and third-generation group and cultural rights supporting solidarity. When applied strictly, the framework runs the risk of reifying the three categories, exaggerating the impact of the European Enlightenment on contemporary norms, and overlooking the historical contexts in which rights-claims emerge. Though useful for analytic and pedagogical purposes, the existing paradigm fails to capture the full spectrum of human rights violations and solutions in the …

Notes From The Field: Implementing Human Rights Education In Service-Learning Courses, Lindsay Padilla

Societies Without Borders

In an attempt to understand the potential impact of Human Rights Education (HRE) at community colleges, this article calls for an open discussion of human rights and service-learning. I argue that framing my Social Problems course with a service- learning requirement from a human rights perspective offers students a formative educational experience that fosters respect for humanity and introduces the struggle for human rights at home and abroad. Working with vulnerable populations in the community, students can experience the ways in which local organizations and agencies promote human rights. In providing access to my teaching plan, I hope that other …

Educational Referendum Voting In Ohio Based On District Size, Socio-Economic Status, And Median Income, Thomas A. Galovic Iv Jan 2011

Educational Referendum Voting In Ohio Based On District Size, Socio-Economic Status, And Median Income, Thomas A. Galovic Iv

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to identify the successful tax levy votes for capital project referendums in Ohio over the past 17 elections and correlate those with the socio-economic level, median income, and district enrollment in which the votes took place. This will serve as a guide to predict what school districts in Indiana would have successful capital project referendum votes based on the Ohio results. The study used data provided directly from the Ohio Department ofEducation in regards to the levy votes and the poverty level of the school districts over the past 17 elections from school years …

"Introduction" To Conjuring The Real: The Role Of Architecture In Eighteenth- And Nineteenth-Century Fiction, Rumiko Handa, James Potter Jan 2011

"Introduction" To Conjuring The Real: The Role Of Architecture In Eighteenth- And Nineteenth-Century Fiction, Rumiko Handa, James Potter

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

Buildings give an immediate presence to the historical or fictional world, which otherwise is unknown or unfamiliar to the audience. The portrayal of a building’s concrete and specific substance makes the world come alive, although the building itself is a mere segment of the world that it represents. This book will trace the genealogy of this representational role of architecture, going back through the history of film and then further in literature, art, and theater, and identify its pedigree in the nineteenth century, where authors, artists, and stage managers used thorough depictions of buildings to effectively feed the audience’s historical …

Influence Of Karst Landscape On Planetary Boundary Layer Atmosphere: A Weather Research And Forecasting (Wrf) Model–Based Investigation, Ronnie Leeper, Rezaul Mamood, Arturo I. Quintanar Jan 2011

Influence Of Karst Landscape On Planetary Boundary Layer Atmosphere: A Weather Research And Forecasting (Wrf) Model–Based Investigation, Ronnie Leeper, Rezaul Mamood, Arturo I. Quintanar

High Plains Regional Climate Center: Staff Publications

Karst hydrology provides a unique set of surface and subsurface hydrological components that affect soil moisture variability. Over karst topography, surface moisture moves rapidly below ground via sink holes, vertical shafts, and sinking streams, reducing surface runoff and moisture infiltration into the soil. In addition, subsurface cave blockage or rapid snowmelt over karst can lead to surface flooding. Moreover, regions dominated by karst may exhibit either drier or wetter soils when compared to nonkarst landscape. However, because of the lack of both observational soil moisture datasets to initialize simulations and regional land surface models (LSMs) that include explicit karst hydrological …

Dynamothermal Metamorphism Of The Chiwaukum Schist In The Steven's Pass Area, Cascade Mountains, Washington, Jennifer A. Davis Jan 2011

Dynamothermal Metamorphism Of The Chiwaukum Schist In The Steven's Pass Area, Cascade Mountains, Washington, Jennifer A. Davis

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

The Chiwaukum Schist in the Steven's Pass region of the North Cascade Mountains, Washington is a metamorphic rock suite of pelitic protolith bordering the Mount Steward Batholith. This clay-right parent material experienced contact metamorphism during the intrusion of the Mount Steward batholith, followed by Buchan style, dynamothermal metamorphism. The minerals produced by these early metamorphic events were later overprinted by minerals of Barrovian style, dynamothermal metamorphism. The index minerals of the contact and Buchan facies metamorphism extend into the andalusite zone, while the Barrovian facies is characterized by aluminosilicate polymorph minerals reaching the sillimanite zone. Calculation of mineral abundances and …
