Are Languages Really Independent From Genes? If Not, Whatwould A Genetic Bias Affecting Language Diversity Look Like?, Dan Dediu May 2011

Are Languages Really Independent From Genes? If Not, Whatwould A Genetic Bias Affecting Language Diversity Look Like?, Dan Dediu

Human Biology

It is generally accepted that the relationship between human genes and language is very complex and multifaceted. This has its roots in the “regular” complexity governing the interplay among genes and between genes and environment for most phenotypes, but with the added layer of supraontogenetic and supra-individual processes defining culture. At the coarsest level, focusing on the species, it is clear that human-specific—but not necessarily faculty-specific—genetic factors subtend our capacity for language and a currently very productive research program is aiming at uncovering them. At the other end of the spectrum, it is uncontroversial that individual-level variations in different aspects …

Assessment Of The Hydrologic Response To Climate Change In The Upper Deschutes River Basin, Central Oregon, Heejun Chang, M. Scott Waibel, Marshall W. Gannett, Christina L. Hulbe May 2011

Assessment Of The Hydrologic Response To Climate Change In The Upper Deschutes River Basin, Central Oregon, Heejun Chang, M. Scott Waibel, Marshall W. Gannett, Christina L. Hulbe

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

Effects of climate change in the Cascade Range will likely include more rain, less snow, and earlier snowmelt in the Cascade Range as compared to present conditions. These changes, in turn, will affect the timing of runoff, groundwater recharge, and groundwater discharge to spring-fed streams. This hydrologic response needs to be examined and understood due to implications for water management. In this study, a water- and energy-balance model was used to explore 21st century changes in the water budget in the upper Deschutes Basin, and a groundwater model was used to evaluate the response of the groundwater system to those …

Cacao Use And The San Lorenzo Olmec, Terry G. Powis, Ann Cyphers, Nilesh W. Gaikwad, Louis Grivetti, Kong Cheong May 2011

Cacao Use And The San Lorenzo Olmec, Terry G. Powis, Ann Cyphers, Nilesh W. Gaikwad, Louis Grivetti, Kong Cheong

Faculty Articles

Mesoamerican peoples had a long history of cacao use—spanning more than 34 centuries—as confirmed by previous identification of cacao residues on archaeological pottery from Paso de la Amada on the Pacific Coast and the Olmec site of El Manatí on the Gulf Coast. Until now, comparable evidence from San Lorenzo, the premier Olmec capital, was lacking. The present study of theobromine residues confirms the continuous presence and use of cacao products at San Lorenzo between 1800 and 1000 BCE, and documents assorted vessels forms used in its preparation and consumption. One elite context reveals cacao use as part of a …

Market-Driven Development In Frontier Ecologies, Dolly Daftary May 2011

Market-Driven Development In Frontier Ecologies, Dolly Daftary

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This dissertation investigates the interaction of market-based development policy with democratic decentralization in ecological frontiers in western India inhabited by the vast majority of the country's poor. The study explores how the leaders of elected local bodies called panchayats who are driven by the imperatives of broad-based distribution deliver upwardly distributive capital-intensive development in resource-poor communities during a period of state-neoliberalization. On the basis of eighteen months of ethnographic fieldwork in eastern Gujarat, the study explores how the implication of panchayats- the world's largest system of democratic politics- in large-scale politics shapes the distribution of material resources in resource-dependent communities. …

Optimizing High Volume Traffic Surges Using Discrete Event Simulation, Claire L. Johnson May 2011

Optimizing High Volume Traffic Surges Using Discrete Event Simulation, Claire L. Johnson

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The purpose of this applied research study is to determine the fidelity of a discrete event simulation tool called the Evacuation Simulation Prediction Tool (ESP) in predicting transit times during a high volume surge in traffic flow. The ESP tool was developed for the purpose of predicting and optimizing large-scale evacuations of counties or regions as an aide in emergency and disaster preparedness planning. The goal of the ESP model is to ascertain the balance of traffic flow capacity by managing the human factor events that impinge upon orderly highway travel without immobilizing the travel route. The objective of this …

Lightless Mornings: A Fine Legacy, Emily Zeanah May 2011

Lightless Mornings: A Fine Legacy, Emily Zeanah

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Lightless Mornings: A Fine Legacy represents a personal interrogation and historical account of my great-great -great grandfather, W.D. McCurdy’s use of forced labor in his coalmines and cotton plantations in the Black Belt region of Alabama during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Through personal research including interviews with other descendents of McCurdy, as well as scholarly research about the practice of convict leasing in Alabama, I explore dynamics of inheritance, economics, power, privilege, race, class, geography, history, family, and identity.

The Carnivalesque And The Grotesque In Elizabeth Bishop's Poetry, Renee Dombrowski May 2011

The Carnivalesque And The Grotesque In Elizabeth Bishop's Poetry, Renee Dombrowski

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Elizabeth Bishop (1911-1979) was a Pulitzer-prize winning American poet who did not produce much published work in her career. This was partly due to her low confidence, depression, alcoholism, and difficult personal life, but it was also due to her meticulousness as a poet. Colleagues and critics praised her strong description and mastery of technique, but criticized her early work as lacking depth. While appearing simple, her early works present complex themes of dualism and isolation. Using characteristics of the carnivalesque and the grotesque, her poetry explores these concepts and the need to cover them. This study's close analysis of …

A Geospatial Service Model And Catalog For Discovery And Orchestration, Elias Ioup May 2011

A Geospatial Service Model And Catalog For Discovery And Orchestration, Elias Ioup

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this research is to provide a supporting Web services architecture, consisting of a service model and catalog, to allow discovery and automatic orchestration of geospatial Web services. First, a methodology for supporting geospatial Web services with existing orchestration tools is presented. Geospatial services are automatically translated into SOAP/WSDL services by a portable service wrapper. Their data layers are exposed as atomic functions while WSDL extensions provide syntactic metadata. Compliant services are modeled using the descriptive logic capabilities of the Ontology Language for the Web (OWL). The resulting geospatial service model has a number of functions. It provides …

Spatial Mismatch For Low-Wage Workers In Post-Katrina New Orleans, Lauren Andrews May 2011

Spatial Mismatch For Low-Wage Workers In Post-Katrina New Orleans, Lauren Andrews

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The theme of this study is spatial mismatch, a concept that gave rise to an ever-expanding body of research concerned with how and why residential and employment distributions have shifted within cities and across metropolitan areas. The concept grew out of John F. Kain's research on how racial discrimination and segregation affects the spatial patterns of people/subgroups and jobs in the postwar American urban environment. Specifically, "Housing Segregation" posits that housing-market discrimination is at the root of increased unemployment among inner-city, nonwhite workers; concurrently, the pace and volume of decentralization (of residents and employment) from central-cities reinforces low-income, overwhelmingly African-American …

New Orleans, The New South, And The Fight For The Panama Exposition, Victoria D. Baiamonte May 2011

New Orleans, The New South, And The Fight For The Panama Exposition, Victoria D. Baiamonte

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

For various reasons, the city of New Orleans has often been ignored in discussions of the New South movement. New Orleans politicians joined the movement during the Progressive Era, much later than other Southern municipal leaders. In becoming a New South city, the Crescent City was launched onto the international trade scene. By an examination of city leaders' efforts to gain federal rights to host an exposition in celebration of the Panama Canal, this study argues New Orleans not only became a New South city, but an international trade entrepôt. Though the exposition efforts failed, the efforts of the city …

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The population, employment and housing units along the Gulf Coast of Mississippi have been increasing since the 1970s through the 2000s. In this study, an overall increasing trend in land cover was found in developed land area near interstates and highways along all three coastal counties. A strong positive correlation was observed in Hancock County between developed land and population and developed land and housing units. A strong negative correlation was observed between vegetation and housing units. Weak positive correlations were found in Harrison County between developed land and population, marsh and population, and marsh and housing units. A weak …

"Against My Destiny": Reading An Italian Immigrant's Memoir In The Early 20th-Century South, Bethany Santucci May 2011

"Against My Destiny": Reading An Italian Immigrant's Memoir In The Early 20th-Century South, Bethany Santucci

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Giuseppe Emilio Rocconi's life narrative, The Story of My Life (1958), represents the hardships of immigration and assimilation through meditations on home, family, and religion. I read his narrative in contrast with white elite narratives that express nostalgia for sharecropping and the segregation era. I see his narrative as a reflection upon the costs of integrating into the white patriarchal economy and his sense of being neither fully Italian nor fully American.

Accurate Color? A Preliminary Investigation Into The Color Gamut Of Selected Special Collection Library Objects, F. Barry Wheeler, Michael J. Bennett May 2011

Accurate Color? A Preliminary Investigation Into The Color Gamut Of Selected Special Collection Library Objects, F. Barry Wheeler, Michael J. Bennett

Published Works

As cultural institutions continue to digitize their collections’ objects, millions of images now exist in TIFF, JPEG, and JPEG 2000 color still image formats.  Commonly, however, the colors of the original objects are not accurately reproduced when such digital image files are rendered on a computer monitor or on a print [1].  Such renderings are acceptable to a degree based upon user intent, but a direct comparison of the original and the image rendering will show easily visible differences upon closer inspection.  The chain from the object itself, to the digital imaging device through color encoding, storage, color decoding, and …

Social Capital And Education: Implications For Student And School Performance, Gregory K. Plagens May 2011

Social Capital And Education: Implications For Student And School Performance, Gregory K. Plagens

Education and Culture

Scholarly work on student and school performance poses a variety of explanations for observed variations. One explanation receiving too little attention is social capital, an intangible resource argued to grow out of social relations and social structure. The seedbed of social capital is argued to reside with John Dewey, who in 1900 used the term when explaining the importance of reading, writing and arithmetic to the future of individuals and communities. This paper examines social capital as a concept and discusses indicators and linkages that may be valuable to educators seeking ways to raise student and school performance.

The Low Back Vowel In Mid-Coast Maine, Gail Davidson May 2011

The Low Back Vowel In Mid-Coast Maine, Gail Davidson

Linguistics

In mid-coast Maine, the words cod and caught sound like they contain the same vowel phoneme, employing the sound [a], a low back vowel. The word father contains a separate contrasting phoneme, spoken as [a], a low central vowel. This paper attempts to show that this perceived similarity in [a] and difference from [a] is in fact real. Unlike in the area of the Northern Cities Chain Shift, where the sound of the vowels in cod, caught and father all approach [a], the vowel in cod and caught in mid coast Maine remains low and back, occasionally rounded, more often …

Well-Being: The Looking Glass In 4-D, Joey M. Bays May 2011

Well-Being: The Looking Glass In 4-D, Joey M. Bays

Communication

Well-being affects all of us. It is intricately interwoven with our identity and interactions. This study explores the relational contexts in which well-being is created, maintained, and diminished. In order to accomplish this goal, three main themes were addressed: (a) the co-researcher's understanding of what well-being is, (b) the co-researcher's understanding of how community affects a person's well-being, and (c) a description of the co-researcher's best of times and worst of times. These phenomenological themes guide the context and process of this research. This study is grounded in the theoretical stance of interpretivism with a constructionism epistemology; the methodology employed …

Remote Sensing And Gis Analysis Of The Spatial And Morphological Changes Of Thermokarst Lakes: Kolyma Lowlands, Northeast Siberia, Meghan L. Tillapaugh May 2011

Remote Sensing And Gis Analysis Of The Spatial And Morphological Changes Of Thermokarst Lakes: Kolyma Lowlands, Northeast Siberia, Meghan L. Tillapaugh

Geosciences

Thermokarst lakes develop when changes in the permafrost thermal regime cause degradation leading to surface subsidence and ponding. The degree of thermokarst development depends upon permafrost characteristics, topography, and geology. Changing thermokarst lake dynamics affect arctic ecosystems, hydrological patterns, albedo, and the carbon cycle through the mobilization of organic matter in the permafrost. This study used remote sensing and GIS techniques to relate lake dynamics in the Kolyma Lowlands, Siberia, to geology, elevation, geomorphological features, hydrology, and air temperature. Highest limnicity and largest lake sizes were found in regions with low elevation, limited alluvial processes, high ground-ice content, and lithologies …

Traditional Knowledge And Fish Biology: A Study Of Bering Cisco In The Yukon River Delta, Alaska, David Michael Runfola May 2011

Traditional Knowledge And Fish Biology: A Study Of Bering Cisco In The Yukon River Delta, Alaska, David Michael Runfola

Fisheries

Relatively little is known about the biology of whitefishes (subfamily Coregoninae) in Alaska. To address this shortcoming, I combined social and biological science methods to examine whitefish in the Yukon River delta, Alaska. This study had two objectives: (1) to collaborate with Yup'ik subsistence fishers in sharing their knowledge of whitefish; and (2) to describe the life history of Bering cisco Coregonus laurettae. In August 2004, interview participants discussed Yup'ik traditional knowledge of whitefish. Participants shared knowledge of Bering cisco and other whitefish species. Interviews demonstrated the need for greater awareness of traditional knowledge, and the importance of communicating this …

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

As the availability of geospatial data increases, there is a growing need to match these datasets together. However, since these datasets often vary in their origins and spatial accuracy, they frequently do not correspond well to each other, which create multiple problems. To accurately align with imagery, analysts currently either: 1) manually move the vectors, 2) perform a labor-intensive spatial registration of vectors to imagery, 3) move imagery to vectors, or 4) redigitize the vectors from scratch and transfer the attributes. All of these are time consuming and labor-intensive operations. Automated matching and fusing vector datasets has been a subject …

Improving Ammonia Emission Modeling And Inventories By Data Mining And Intelligent Interpretation Of The National Air Emission Monitoring Study Database, Jiqin Ni, Eric L. Cortus, Albert J. Heber May 2011

Improving Ammonia Emission Modeling And Inventories By Data Mining And Intelligent Interpretation Of The National Air Emission Monitoring Study Database, Jiqin Ni, Eric L. Cortus, Albert J. Heber

School of Agricultural & Biological Engineering Faculty Publications

Ammonia emission is one of the greatest environmental concerns in sustainable agriculture development. Several limitations and fundamental problems associated with the current agricultural ammonia emission modeling and emission inventories have been identified. They were associated with a significant disconnection between field monitoring data and knowledge about the data. Comprehensive field measurement datasets have not been fully exploited for scientific research and emission regulations. This situation can be considerably improved if the currently available data are better interpreted and the new knowledge is applied to update ammonia emission modeling techniques. The world’s largest agricultural air quality monitoring database with more than …

The Spectacle Of Bloodshed In Roman Society, Lauren E. Cowles May 2011

The Spectacle Of Bloodshed In Roman Society, Lauren E. Cowles

Constructing the Past

We know relatively little about the role sports played in ancient history. But of all the sports portrayed during antiquity, the gladiatorial combat was one that has been the most commonly portrayed and studied. The spectacle of bloodshed in Roman society is a subject of interest that is generally only viewed in regards to gladiatorial combats. But these spectacles had a wide array of uses. For example, spectacles of death included not only gladiatorial combats but also ritualized executions and animal hunts. These spectacles of death fulfilled a variety of purposes including most predominantly entertainment, but they were also used …

Casa Como Yo, Gabriela Montilla May 2011

Casa Como Yo, Gabriela Montilla

Architecture Senior Theses

"The key to addressing Puerto Rico’s increased life expectancy is to provide housing that improves people’s quality of life while growing older. I contend that the role of architecture is to encourage people to embrace aging through a re-conceptualization of senior housing: designed as “not so senior” (which stigmatizes the older individual as being less capable) and more focused on life satisfaction- promoting free will, flexibility, and program integration. Housing for the aging population should accommodate spatial needs over time in a self-directed personal environment, as well as provide interest and connection to the larger urban community."
