Ending The Cycle Of Child Sex Slavery In Cambodia, Carmen Marie Murphy
Ending The Cycle Of Child Sex Slavery In Cambodia, Carmen Marie Murphy
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
As I had the chance to visit Cambodia and talk to actual victims, I planned to use ethnographic methodology to incorporate testimonies and personal interaction to supplement the lack of specific research in this field. I believed ethnography would be an effective method as it takes a holistic perspective of all contributing factors, such as history, geography, religion, government, and population. My plan was to conduct an ethnographic case study of Cambodia using current scholarship on these areas, and then contribute my personal experiences. To ensure quality control and unbiased research. I used contextualization by conducting my research in Cambodia, …

We Can Grow It: Reporting On Women In Agriculture In India, Belize And The U.S., Colleen Stewart
We Can Grow It: Reporting On Women In Agriculture In India, Belize And The U.S., Colleen Stewart
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Women produce more than half of the world’s food, according to the U.N. Food and Agricultural Organization. This aligns with the Chinese proverb– “Women Hold up Half the Sky.” As the role of women in agriculture increases in the developed and developing world, female economic activity in agriculture serves as a beacon for poverty reduction, increased food security, and environmental sustainability. In the United States, there has been a 30-percent increase in the number of female-run farms in the U.S. since 2002 and women, now the largest “minority” group in agriculture in the U.S., operate approximately 300,000 farms throughout the …
Assessing Social Benefits Of Domestic Rainwater Harvesting In Southern Kenya, Lindsey M. Filiatreau
Assessing Social Benefits Of Domestic Rainwater Harvesting In Southern Kenya, Lindsey M. Filiatreau
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
In the Kasigau location of the Voi District of Kenya, severe rainwater shortages closed fourteen water collection stations in 2008 and 2009, leaving ten water sources to service 15,000 people in the region. Few families in the area have domestic rainwater harvesting systems which are an easily implemented, low-cost means of water collection. I investigated the ability of rainwater catchment systems to modify family time budgets (by reducing water collection time) and lessen the severity of water scarcity (by supplying families a significant amount of water). Forty families participated in the research, 20 of whom received free installation of a …

Background: Patients with delirium and dementia admitted to general hospitals have poor outcomes, and their carers report poor experiences. We developed an acute geriatric medical ward into a specialist Medical and Mental Health Unit over an eighteen month period. Additional specialist mental health staff were employed, other staff were trained in the ‘person-centred’ dementia care approach, a programme of meaningful activity was devised, the environment adapted to the needs of people with cognitive impairment, and attention given to communication with family carers. We hypothesise that patients managed on this ward will have better outcomes than those receiving standard care, and …

The number of children diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has grown
exponentially in recent years (Simpson, 2008). Children diagnosed with ASD have lifelong impairments in three areas: socialization, communication and behavior (AP A, 2000). These along with associated features of the disorder such as difficulties with learning, attention, affect, sensory processing, and regulating emotions and behavior can make creating an educational plan for these students particularly challenging. The current study addressed a number of research questions related to training, preparation and confidence to deliver services to students with ASD among school-based professionals. The study utilized survey-research, targeting school …

Dna Sequence Variation In The Wingless Gene Product In Buckeye Butterflies (Genus Junonia), Bonnie Mccullagh
Dna Sequence Variation In The Wingless Gene Product In Buckeye Butterflies (Genus Junonia), Bonnie Mccullagh
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Wingless is a highly conserved gene important to cell determination in development. In Drosophila, the wingless gene product has been identified as responsible for wing patterning. In Bicyclus anynana and Junonia coenia, wingless gene product is expressed in a fashion that suggests that it is involved in butterfly wing color pattern development. The wingless gene product has been implicated as a potential focal signal for patterning the eyespot of Junonia butterflies. I have shown that extensive DNA sequence variation (26.04% of the sequenced region) exists in 402 bp of wingless coding sequence among 338 specimens of Junonia from …

Enhancing Preservice Elementary Teachers’ 21st Century Information And Media Literacy Skills, Sara Fry, Sara Seely
Curriculum, Instruction, and Foundational Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
This two-semester pedagogical study investigated the effectiveness of an approach to information and media literacy instruction for elementary preservice teachers. Participants were trained in and then used a systematic process of searching for, evaluating, and using journal articles and websites. Two-thirds of the Semester one participants were unsuccessful identifying relevant, high-quality journal articles and ½ inaccurately evaluated the quality of websites. After three opportunities for formative assessment were added to the instruction model in Semester two, participants proficiently evaluated websites and ¾ were able to find relevant journal articles. The results demonstrate the importance of formative assessment and the need …

To The Ages Of Ages: Reconceptualizing High School Art History Curriculum, Amy Bergh
To The Ages Of Ages: Reconceptualizing High School Art History Curriculum, Amy Bergh
Theses and Dissertations
Through this curriculum study, I explored the application of ideas found within contemporary art education to a course of traditional secondary art history. These contemporary art education ideas included: visual culture instruction, interdisciplinary instruction, contemporary art instruction, curriculum development, the use of enduring ideas, and the inclusion of a variety of perspectives based on gender and ethnicity. Through these art education ideas, a new curriculum was formed, that pushed both the students and the teacher toward a more inclusive art history course that made real connections for students and allowed students to be active members in their own learning. Instruction …

Historical Legacies, Information And Contemporary Water Science And Management, Daniel J. Bain, Jennifer A. S. Arrigo, Mark B. Green, Brian A. Pellerin, Charles J. Vörösmarty
Advanced Science Research Center
Hydrologic science has largely built its understanding of the hydrologic cycle using contemporary data sources (i.e., last 100 years). However, as we try to meet water demand over the next 100 years at scales from local to global, we need to expand our scope and embrace other data that address human activities and the alteration of hydrologic systems. For example, the accumulation of human impacts on water systems requires exploration of incompletely documented eras. When examining these historical periods, basic questions relevant to modern systems arise: (1) How is better information incorporated into water management strategies? (2) Does any point …

Cultural Tourism In The "Tropical Playground" Issues Of Exclusion And Development In Miami, Tom Cairns Clery
Cultural Tourism In The "Tropical Playground" Issues Of Exclusion And Development In Miami, Tom Cairns Clery
Open Access Theses
Miami’s marketers have a long and successful history of creating and recreating imagery that draws visitors towards the "magic city" or the "tropical playground". This thesis investigates Miami’s marketing and its roots by analyzing the role and legacy of segregation in order to examine how tourism and its image relate to issues of exclusion and inequality. An inclusive rethinking of the definitions and usage of culture is then advocated as an important theoretical shift that could benefit development and revitalization in the city’s economically poorest neighborhoods. Analysis (through case studies, semi-structured interviews and GIS analysis) then shows how historic patterns …

This thesis explores the evolution of my practice as it developed over my two years of graduate school. I entered school interested in the built environment and how structures helped create subjectivity and provided sites for material and phenomenological transformations. Early in graduate school, I developed a photography series that investigated these issues. However, an awareness of a conversation occurring in the larger art world that questioned the efficacy of photography drove me to consider ways to extend my practice into sculpture and installation. Over the next two semesters, I developed my ideas of light, form and structure into video …

Understanding Resort Marketing Practices, Eric Brey, David K. Klenosky, Xinran Lehto, Alastair Morrison
Journal of Tourism Insights
Effective marketing plays an integral role in the success of hospitality and tourism businesses. While research has examined many aspects of the hospitality and tourism industry, the marketing of destination resorts has been largely ignored. This study addresses this gap by reporting the insights obtained from interviews conducted with North American resort marketing executives to assess their views on current resort marketing trends and practices. Based on a content analysis of this interview data, 18 topics were identified and organized into five categories: channels, relationships, targeting, technology and function. This paper provides a discussion of each topic, overviews implications of …
The Discourses Of Energy And Environmental Security In The Debate Over Offshore Oil Drilling Policy In Florida, Emily Joyce Martens
The Discourses Of Energy And Environmental Security In The Debate Over Offshore Oil Drilling Policy In Florida, Emily Joyce Martens
Open Access Theses
Amid growing concern over access to sufficient and cheap energy resources, on March 31, 2010 the Obama Administration announced the opening of new exploratory and drilling sites for oil within the United States Outer Continental Shelf. The announcement concerning the Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Strategy came only three weeks before the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that marked an unprecedented economic and environmental disaster. Though the concern over offshore drilling, especially regarding regulation and environmental impact, has increased in the wake of the oil disaster, the general debate regarding offshore oil drilling has been a …

Translating Postcolonial Pasts: Immigration And Identity In The Fiction Of Bharati Mukherjee, Elizabeth Nunez, And Jhumpa Lahiri, Ann Marie Alfonso-Forero
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation examines how postcoloniality affects identity formation in contemporary women's immigrant literature. In order to do so, it must interrogate the critical fields that are most interested in issues of national and cultural identities, migration, and the appropriation of women by both Western and postcolonial projects. By examining the fiction of Bharati Mukherjee, Elizabeth Nunez, and Jhumpa Lahiri through the triple lens of ethnic American studies, postcolonial theory, and transnational feminism, I will argue that theorizing postcolonial women's writing in the United States involves sustained analysis of how particular socio-political experiences are translated into the context of American identity. …

By merging the ancient associations that clay has with the human form and prosthetic science I question the relevancy and role of the human body in the future. As prosthetics heighten the awareness of the body through absence these additive limbs further this relevancy by presence. With greater advances in genetic engineering and plastic surgery biology will no longer dominate and these ridged clay extensions could become flesh.
