Need For Methamphetamine Programming In Extension Education, Amy R. Beaudreault, Larry E. Miller

Journal of Extension

The study reported sought to identify the prevention education needs involving methamphetamine through survey methodology. The study focused on a random sample of U.S. states and the Extension Directors within each state, resulting in a 70% response rate (n = 134). Findings revealed that 11% reported they had received methamphetamine user prevention training and 23% had received safety training. Overall, perceived knowledge is low regarding methamphetamine production signs, use, state and federal laws, prevention resources, and identification of methamphetamine education resources. Yet perceived importance of the same topics is high, supporting the need for increased methamphetamine programming.

The Policies Of The State And Targeting The Poor In Egypt: Egypt's Transition To A Welfare State?, Catherine Isaac Van Bebber Jun 2011

The Policies Of The State And Targeting The Poor In Egypt: Egypt's Transition To A Welfare State?, Catherine Isaac Van Bebber

Theses and Dissertations

Understanding who the poor are and what defines their level of deprivation is critical in the state's responsibility to its citizens. This thesis looks at how the Egyptian State targets the poor through the narrative of poverty during the last sixty years. While the state has historically addressed this issue within the broader context of societal welfare, it has not always specifically targeted the marginalized and vulnerable groups. The Egyptian State has transitioned from authoritarian socialism, to a rentier economy, and then to a free market state without upsetting the status quo of the ruling bureaucracy and state agents. Recently, …

Crustal Structure And Evolution Beneath The Colorado Plateau And The Southern Basin And Range Province: Results From Receiver Function And Gravity Studies, Lamuail Bashir, Stephen S. Gao, Kelly H. Liu, Kevin Lee Mickus Jun 2011

Crustal Structure And Evolution Beneath The Colorado Plateau And The Southern Basin And Range Province: Results From Receiver Function And Gravity Studies, Lamuail Bashir, Stephen S. Gao, Kelly H. Liu, Kevin Lee Mickus

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Over the past several decades, contrasting models have been proposed for the physical and chemical processes responsible for the uplift and long-term stability of the Colorado Plateau (CP) and crustal thinning beneath the Basin and Range Province (BRP) in the southwestern United States. Here we provide new constraints on the models by modeling gravity anomalies and by systematically analyzing over 15,500 P-to-S receiver functions recorded at 72 USArray and other broadband seismic stations on the southwestern CP and the southern BRP. Our results reveal that the BRP is characterized by a thin crust (28.2 ± 0.5 km), a mean V …

Varieties Of Capitalism, Power Resources, And Historical Legacies: Explaining The Slovenian Exception, Stephen Crowley, Miroslav Stanojevic Jun 2011

Varieties Of Capitalism, Power Resources, And Historical Legacies: Explaining The Slovenian Exception, Stephen Crowley, Miroslav Stanojevic

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Although Slovenia is a small, relatively new nation-state, it has been justifiably called "neocorporatist" and a "coordinated market economy," making it unique among postcommunist societies, including ten new EU member states. The authors explore how it became so, and in the process shed light on the debate between varieties of capitalism (VoC) and power resources theories about how coordinated or neocorporatist economies emerge. Although several of the elements predicted by the varieties of capitalism perspective were present in Slovenia, others were not. The authors also find that a significant mobilization by organized labor at a crucial point played an essential …

Of Courage, Tumult, And The Smash Mouth Truth: A Union Side Apologia, Michael C. Duff

All Faculty Scholarship

In this paper I argue that no labor movement is possible until workers understand and accept the inevitability of labor-management conflict. I support my contention drawing broadly on history surrounding the New Deal and on my own experiences as a union organizer and labor lawyer.

The Implications Of Water Insecurity For Fragile And Failing States: The Case Of Pakistan, Jennifer Norins Jun 2011

The Implications Of Water Insecurity For Fragile And Failing States: The Case Of Pakistan, Jennifer Norins

Graduate Masters Theses

As we become more firmly established in the 21st century, the international system faces a number of increasingly more difficult challenges that pose threats to global security and human progress. Among these challenges, water scarcity and failing states have each received prominent attention in both the academic and policy realms. Water serves a number of critical purposes for human survival and socio-economic activity. The threat of water scarcity is becoming increasingly salient and the capacity of states to ensure water security, and other securities which water security supports, is being tested. Fragile and failing states also occupy significant space in …

Writing To Learn: Can Reflection Journals Be Used To Promote Self-Reflection And Learning?, Duan Ning, Magdeleine Lew, Henk G. Schmidt

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate whether there is evidence of reflection in student-written journals and to investigate whether students show improvements in their reflective skills through journal keeping. To that end, the reflection journals of 3460 first-year students enrolled in a polytechnic were studied by means of an automated coding procedure. Data used in the analyses were students' journals for an entire week, collected once at the beginning and again at the end of an academic year. Outcomes of the content analyses suggest that there is evidence of reflection in students' journals and that students reflected …

Evolutionary Patterns In Deep-Sea Mollusks, Elizabeth Ellen Boyle Jun 2011

Evolutionary Patterns In Deep-Sea Mollusks, Elizabeth Ellen Boyle

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

The evolution of deep-sea fauna is poorly known. We know little about the scales of population differentiation, radiation and colonization of the deep sea. This dissertation explores evolution in the deep sea at the level of population differentiation on ocean-wide scales in a gastropod species Benthonella tenella and phylogeny of a deep-sea subfamily of protobranch bivalves, Ledellinae. While working on the phylogeny of the Ledellinae the presence of mitochondrial heteroplasmy was discovered.

Genetic variation was quantified within and among populations of deep-sea gastropod Benthonella tenella to identify the extent of population differentiation and potential mechanisms that might isolate gene pools. …

Update 2000: Progress And Limitations In Developing A Water Market In California, Peter L. Yolles May 2011

Update 2000: Progress And Limitations In Developing A Water Market In California, Peter L. Yolles

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Water markets have long been proposed for California
as a water management tool to increase water use
efficiency. Variability of precipitation across time and
space, a fast growing population with strong
environmental concerns, a vocal agricultural sector, and
a powerful service economy combine to create pressure
on limited indigenous water supplies. While continued
investments in conservation are needed to continue to
reduce demand-side pressure, California water
policymakers are seeking innovative market-based
solutions to cooperatively and efficiently allocate water.
So far, California has failed to create the key elements
that would support a dynamic water market. This paper
will review efforts …

Geometry Discovery With Connectivity Information And Applications In Sensor Networks, Yue Wang May 2011

Geometry Discovery With Connectivity Information And Applications In Sensor Networks, Yue Wang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Wireless sensor networks are tightly associated with the underlying environment in which the sensors are deployed. The global geometry and topology of the network is of great importance to both sensor network applications and the implementation of networking functionalities. In this thesis, we contribute a comprehensive framework for the discovery of sensor network geometry based only on connectivity information, and apply it to several challenging problems: Boundary Recognition, Homology Computation, Layout Recovery and Localization We develop a distributed algorithm to detect the nodes on the boundaries in a sensor network by using only connectivity information. Our algorithm is motivated by …

Toward An Organizationally Diverse American Capitalism? Cooperative, Mutual, And Local, State-Owned Enterprise, Marc Schneiberg May 2011

Toward An Organizationally Diverse American Capitalism? Cooperative, Mutual, And Local, State-Owned Enterprise, Marc Schneiberg

Seattle University Law Review

Discussions of economic reform focus on two strategies for tempering corporate excess and mobilizing corporations for growth and prosperity: restructuring markets via competition policies and various forms of countervailing power. Populists, Progressives, and New Dealers looked to antitrust, regulatory states, and unions as counterweights to corporations. Contemporary efforts look to not-for-profit watchdogs, NGO certification and standard setting, privatization, and corporate governance reform to upgrade markets and deflect corporations from low road paths. This essay recovers a third strategy for regulating and reforming corporate capitalism: promoting organizational diversity via the formation of parallel systems of cooperative, mutual and local, state-owned enterprises. …

Income Elasticity Of Demand For Large, Modern Rapid Transit Rail Networks, Brian J. Asquith May 2011

Income Elasticity Of Demand For Large, Modern Rapid Transit Rail Networks, Brian J. Asquith

Undergraduate Economic Review

In spite of evidence to the contrary, there is a common perception inside of academia and out that rail transit is an inferior good. This paper proposes a demand model for radial subway networks utilizing the monocentric city model in order to quantify the income elasticity of demand. This model is tested against extant data from the 2000 Census, and controls for spatial variability, demographic and economic factors, and commuter costs. This paper concludes that while the factors that drive demand vary across urban areas, the results suggest that rail transit may in fact be a normal good.

Blind And Fake: Exploring The Geography Of The Expanded Book, Maria Hellström Reimer, Milica Lapčević, Luca Simeone

Nordes Conference Series

It seems like we are now rapidly leaving the galaxy of printed matter. As screen-based media is making its entry into our everyday lives, it is pushing aside an object – the book - that has structured our forms of being together for almost six hundred years. This shift is not absolute but successive, and it raises a lot of questions. What kind of mediating practices are developing beyond printed media? And how do these practices structure and organize common spaces and publicities? Even though we are today far into the electronic age, we are still in way suspended in …

A Project To Design, Implement, And Populate An Effective Geodatabase In Order To Re-Organize Geographic Information Systems Instructional A Small Community College, James C. Gibbons

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Geographic information systems instruction at a small community college was deemed inadequate by instructional staff and students. Inadequate resources and inefficient organization of data resulted in frustration for all users. Slow infrastructure resulted in excessive time needed to complete student projects and precluded the course objectives to be fully met. A project was completed to define requirements and recommendations, obtain necessary upgrades to both hardware and network infrastucture, reorganize data storage in a local geodatabase, and institute methods for more efficient instruction using ArcView and ArcCatalog applications from the software suite ArcGIS Desktop by ESRI. Subsequent adoption of the changes …

Smart Meter Devices And The Effect Of Feedback On Residential Electricity Consumption: Evidence From A Natural Experiment In Northern Ireland, Will Gans, Anna Alberini, Alberto Longo May 2011

Smart Meter Devices And The Effect Of Feedback On Residential Electricity Consumption: Evidence From A Natural Experiment In Northern Ireland, Will Gans, Anna Alberini, Alberto Longo

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Using a unique set of data and exploiting a large-scale natural experiment, we estimate the effect of real-time usage information on residential electricity consumption in Northern Ireland. Starting in April 2002, the utility replaced prepayment meters with “smart” meters that allow the consumer to track usage in real-time. We rely on this event, account for the endogeneity of price and plan with consumption through a plan selection correction term, and find that the provision of information is associated with a decline in electricity consumption of up to 20%. We find that the reduction is robust to different specifications, selection-bias correction …
