This research study explored written plans for effective technology integration. The research study included a normative and comparative analysis of school technology plans using a researcher-developed, evaluation tool named Information Communication Technology (ICT) ICT180. The sample of 30 included Missouri public school districts that had plans reviewed and approved by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) in June of 2009. ICT180 was an evaluation tool, which was used to critically review the objectives, strategies, and action steps in the school district technology plans. The tool provided an in-depth assessment of the five Technology Focus Areas of the Missouri …

Estimated Business Interruptions Losses Of The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Vanessa Vargas Jul 2011

Estimated Business Interruptions Losses Of The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Vanessa Vargas

Economics ETDs

A generalized framework of Economic Analysis of natural and man-made disasters is applied to the estimation of business interruption losses associated with an oil spill. Specifically, this framework is applied to the Deepwater Horizon incident which occurred on April 20, 2010 and resulted in the extensive fouling of the Gulf of Mexico waters and the associated coastline. The region of analysis is the coastline extending east from Louisiana to the Pan-handle of Florida. Economic impacts were measured as business interruption losses reported as lost Gross Domestic product at the county, state, and national level. Short-run economic impacts were evaluated using …

User-Friendliness And Virtual Reality: A Hypertextual Reading Of Alain Mabanckou’S Verre Cassé, Jason Herbeck Jul 2011

User-Friendliness And Virtual Reality: A Hypertextual Reading Of Alain Mabanckou’S Verre Cassé, Jason Herbeck

World Languages Faculty Publications and Presentations

Set in a seedy Congolese bar seemingly far removed from the ever-present influences of globalization (aside perhaps from the occasional copy of Paris-Match), Alain Mabanckou's Verre Cassé (2005)2 does not have a single foot- or endnote. In fact, the novel has no such peritext3 whatsoever aside from its title and two short inter-titles that serve to identify the two parts of the work as premiers feuillets and derniers feuillets. However, this absence of peritext is not in the least surprising given that the novel does not contain any lexical, idiomatic or vernacular terms specific to the …

Miniature Nation Building: Model Railroading And The Dialectics Of Scale In Post-Wwii America, Ivan Weber Jul 2011

Miniature Nation Building: Model Railroading And The Dialectics Of Scale In Post-Wwii America, Ivan Weber

American Studies ETDs

This thesis advances a critical understanding of how scale informs the production and consumption of the American nation, and it makes a foray into Marxist critical analysis by integrating the theoretical and methodological objectives of historical materialism with the multiple, dialectically construed dimensionalities of scale. The hobby of model railroading serves as the case study for this analysis, and the dialectics of scale as the theoretical apparatus with which this analysis is articulated. The central argument of the thesis is that the model railroad hobby builds the nation, in miniature, through the continual regeneration of American masculinity, the traditional American …

Mammalian Diversification Across The Holarctic: Spatiotemporal Evolution In Response To Environmental Change, Andrew G. Hope Jul 2011

Mammalian Diversification Across The Holarctic: Spatiotemporal Evolution In Response To Environmental Change, Andrew G. Hope

Biology ETDs

The primary focus in this dissertation is on the processes of environmental change that drive evolution. We are currently witnessing unparalleled changes in climate and associated changes in biotic communities. With a growing understanding that climate and habitat change, coupled with natural variability, will have an increased influence on biota into the future, it is our responsibility to learn how best to manage and conserve the Earths natural resources. Among other things, this will require a firmer understanding of biodiversity, life histories, evolutionary relationships among species, and community dynamics over multiple species. One method of understanding how species will respond …

Alberta Legal Services Mapping Project: An Overview Of Findings From The Eleven Judicial Districts, Mary Stratton Jul 2011

Alberta Legal Services Mapping Project: An Overview Of Findings From The Eleven Judicial Districts, Mary Stratton

Canadian Forum on Civil Justice

The Alberta Legal Services Mapping Project (ALSMP) was a large-scale, collaborative research initiative designed to increase understanding of the legal needs of Albertans, the extent to which these needs are currently being met, and how access to legal services can be improved. It was the most comprehensive „mapping‟ research1 so far undertaken in Canada and collected an unprecedented breadth and depth of information about legal programs and services in Alberta, the demands on those services and identified legal needs that are not yet being met. The data also captured local social contexts and identified current strengths as well as gaps …

The Coevolution Of Transnational Corporations And Institutions, Sarianna M. Lundan Jul 2011

The Coevolution Of Transnational Corporations And Institutions, Sarianna M. Lundan

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

While economic theories of the firm have traditionally focused on the ownership of assets, the increasing use of contractual partnerships is beginning to challenge our conception of the firm by emphasizing its coordinating role. In structuring their contracts, as well as in managing the relationships governed by the contracts, firms try to mitigate uncertainties that could destroy the value-adding potential of such transactions. These uncertainties may be specific to the transaction partner, but they might also arise from the institutional context of the contracting parties, particularly in the case of transactions that cross borders. The coevolutionary process whereby firms both …

Private Actors And Public Governance Beyond The State: The Multinational Corporation, The Financial Stability Board, And The Global Governance Order, Larry Cata Backer Jul 2011

Private Actors And Public Governance Beyond The State: The Multinational Corporation, The Financial Stability Board, And The Global Governance Order, Larry Cata Backer

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

Transnational corporations are at the center of extraordinary and complex governance systems that are developing outside the state and international public organizations and beyond the conventionally legitimating framework of the forms of domestic or international hard law. Though these systems are sometimes recognized as autonomous and authoritative among its members, they are neither isolated from each other nor from the states with which they come into contact. Together these systems may begin to suggest a new template for networked governance beyond the state, but one in which public and private actors are integrated stakeholders. This provides the source of the …

Race Audits, R. A. Lenhardt Jul 2011

Race Audits, R. A. Lenhardt

UC Law Journal

The persistence of the problems that attend the American color line makes clear the need for greater experimentation and innovation in the area of race. For years now, we have looked primarily to courts for solutions. But current jurisprudence offers very little that is useful in dealing with the modern realities of durable racial inequality and segregation. As cases such as Parents Involved in Community Schools v. Seattle School District No. 1 and Ricci v. DeStefano make clear, it limits dramatically the tools available to address racial inequality, regarding as “bad cities” localities that try affirmatively to grapple with matters …

Beyond Jeopardy And Lectures: Using Microsoft Powerpoint As A Game Tool To Teach Science, Jason Paul Siko, Michael K. Barbour, Sacip Toker

Education Faculty Publications

To date, research involving homemade PowerPoint games as an instructional tool has not shown statistically significant gains in student performance. This paper examines the results of a study comparing the performance of students in a high school chemistry course who created homemade PowerPoint games as a test review with the students who used a traditional study guide on two separate unit tests. Students scored significantly higher on one of the two unit tests; however, there was no difference in performance between students who created games multiple times. This was the first time a significant difference has been reported when using …

Nursing Students’ Attitudes Toward People With Mental Illness: Do They Change After Instruction And Clinical Exposure?, Rachel Morrison Jul 2011

Nursing Students’ Attitudes Toward People With Mental Illness: Do They Change After Instruction And Clinical Exposure?, Rachel Morrison

Honors Thesis and Capstone Projects

People with mental illness are among the most stigmatized groups of patients in the healthcare setting (Putnam, 2008). Nurses comprise roughly 15.3 percent of the healthcare team (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2010) and have frequent direct interactions with patients. As one of the larger groups of healthcare providers, nurses can potentially influence this stigma, either by contributing to the prevalent negative attitudes, or by confronting expressions of stigma. A requirement for licensure is to take a course in Mental Health. One of the goals of this course is to decrease stigma toward people with mental illness (American Association of …

Propagule Pressure And Introduction Pathways Of Bromus Tectorum (Cheatgrass; Poaceae) In The Central United States, Temsha D. Huttanus, Richard N. Mack, Stephen J. Novak Jul 2011

Propagule Pressure And Introduction Pathways Of Bromus Tectorum (Cheatgrass; Poaceae) In The Central United States, Temsha D. Huttanus, Richard N. Mack, Stephen J. Novak

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

An introduced species' propagule pressure strongly influences the genetic diversity and evolutionary potential of its descendants and even the likelihood of biological invasion. We examined population genetic consequences arising from introduction of the invasive annual grass Bromus tectorum into the central United States (U.S.). The origin and frequency of introductions were investigated by assembling allozyme diversity data from 60 widely spaced populations. At least five introduction events contributed to the grass’s genetic diversity in the central U.S. Populations in this region have fewer alleles (30 vs. 43) and polymorphic loci (5 vs. 13) than native populations, evidence of a genetic …

The Effects Of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal (Am) Fungal And Garlic Mustard Introductions On Native Am Fungal Diversity, Alexander M. Koch, Pedro M. Antunes, Kathryn Barto, Don Cipollini, Daniel L. Mummey, John N. Klironomos Jul 2011

The Effects Of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal (Am) Fungal And Garlic Mustard Introductions On Native Am Fungal Diversity, Alexander M. Koch, Pedro M. Antunes, Kathryn Barto, Don Cipollini, Daniel L. Mummey, John N. Klironomos

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Introduced, non-native organisms are of global concern, because biological invasions can negatively affect local communities. Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal communities have not been well studied in this context. AM fungi are abundant in most soils, forming symbiotic root-associations with many plant species. Commercial AM fungal inocula are increasingly spread worldwide, because of potentially beneficial effects on plant growth. In contrast, some invasive plant species, such as the non-mycorrhizal Alliaria petiolata, can negatively influence AM fungi. In a greenhouse study we examined changes in the structure of a local Canadian AM fungal community in response to inoculation by foreign AM fungi …

Late Holocene History Of Dune Activity Along The Elkhorn River In Northeastern Nebraska, Rebecca A. Young Jul 2011

Late Holocene History Of Dune Activity Along The Elkhorn River In Northeastern Nebraska, Rebecca A. Young

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The Nebraska Sand Hills have been an important study area for dune activation and the nature of prehistoric drought events in the Great Plains. However, little has been done to understand the impact of these droughts to smaller dune fields along the eastern margin of the Great Plains. This study focuses on the Stanton dune field which is found about 145 km east of the Sand Hills along the southern edge of the Elkhorn River valley in northeastern Nebraska. With a wetter and slightly cooler climate regime than that of the Nebraska Sand Hills and most other central Great Plains …

An Analysis Of Women’S Participation In Peace Negotiations; 1992 - 2010, Tuohy Ahern Jul 2011

An Analysis Of Women’S Participation In Peace Negotiations; 1992 - 2010, Tuohy Ahern

Capstone Collection

This paper will present an analysis of several women’s peacebuilding movements and describe their efforts to participate in formal peace negotiations. This analysis includes the design, development and implementation of the female and community-based initiatives as well as the strategies, tactics and approaches used by these women throughout the peace negotiation process. It is important to consider the central role women’s organizations have played in ensuring women’s involvement when examining peace negotiations. Despite a lack of formal invitations to participate in negotiations, many female community-based initiatives have gained entry through efforts outside the political realm.

To provide a framework on …

An oft-quoted Hadith purports that it is incumbent upon every Muslim to seek knowledge, even if it is to be found as far away as China.1 However, the plethora of knowledge that was discovered there generally has yet to be unraveled by Western academics. If the intellectual tradition of Chinese Muslims may appear to be of minor consequence to the larger field of Islamic studies, this is in part because of our failure to assess their influence. The abundant resources for understanding the Islamic sciences in China have barely been grazed and are awaiting our thorough analytical peregrination. This essay …
