Leaving Or Staying: Inter-Provincial Migration In Vietnam, Phuong Nguyen-Hoang, John G. Mcpeak Jul 2011

Leaving Or Staying: Inter-Provincial Migration In Vietnam, Phuong Nguyen-Hoang, John G. Mcpeak

Economics - All Scholarship

Internal migration has several policy implications for economic growth and development for developing countries in general and for the fast growing low-income country of Vietnam in particular. Little research has been done, however, on inter-provincial migration in Vietnam. This study makes two major contributions to the migration and development literature in terms of the datasets and policy-relevant estimation approach. It is the first paper to use the annual survey data on migration published by Vietnam’s General Statistics Office. This study also adopts a functional form to accommodate the flexibility of income’s elasticity. Income, together with urban unemployment rates, are endogenously …

The Risk Exposures Of Asia-Focused Hedge Funds, Melvyn Teo Jul 2011

The Risk Exposures Of Asia-Focused Hedge Funds, Melvyn Teo

Research Collection BNP Paribas Hedge Fund Centre

How have Asia-focused hedge funds adjusted their risk exposures in response to the recent financial crisis? By evaluating fund performance relative to an augmented Fung and Hsieh (2004) model, we find that Asia-focused hedge funds have broadly trimmed risk exposures post-crisis. They have reduced their exposure to small stocks relative to large stocks, scaled back their loadings on high yield corporate bonds relative to low yield U.S. sovereign debt, and pared their allocation to the Japanese equity markets. At the same time, however, they are now more exposed to Asian equity markets.

Geopolitics Of The Kaliningrad Exclave And Enclave: Russian And Eu Perspectives, Alexander Diener, Joshua Hagen Jul 2011

Geopolitics Of The Kaliningrad Exclave And Enclave: Russian And Eu Perspectives, Alexander Diener, Joshua Hagen

Geography Faculty Research

Two U.S. political geographers examine a range of geopolitical issues associated with the shifting sovereignty of Russia's Kaliningrad Oblast (a part of the former German province of East Prussia) during the 20th century, as well as the region's evolving geopolitical status as a consequence of the European Union's enlargement to embrace Poland and Lithuania. They argue that Kaliningrad today can be considered a "double" borderland, situated simultaneously on the European Union's border with Russia as well as physically separated from Russia, its home country, by the surrounding land boundaries of EU states. Although technically neither an exclave nor an enclave, …

Lost In Translation: Interpreting And Presenting Dublin’S Colonial Past, Theresa Ryan, Bernadette Quinn Jul 2011

Lost In Translation: Interpreting And Presenting Dublin’S Colonial Past, Theresa Ryan, Bernadette Quinn

Conference papers

As Alderman (2010: 90) has recently written, the potential struggle to determine what conception of the past will prevail constitutes the politics of memory. This paper aims to investigate the politics of memory at play in determining how Dublin’s colonial heritage is constructed and represented to tourists. Dublin’s profile as a tourism destination has grown recently. It attracted 5.4 million visitors in 2009 (Fáilte Ireland 2010). Culture and heritage underpin both its touristic appeal and the city’s official efforts to represent itself as a destination. Much of Dublin’s most iconic built heritage is strongly associated with its development as a …

The Third Place: The Library As Collaborative And Community Space In A Time Of Fiscal Restraint, Susan Montgomery, Jonathan Miller Jul 2011

The Third Place: The Library As Collaborative And Community Space In A Time Of Fiscal Restraint, Susan Montgomery, Jonathan Miller

Faculty Publications

In a period of fiscal constraint, when assumptions about the library as place are being challenged, administrators question the contribution of every expense to student success. Libraries have been successful in migrating resources and services to a digital environment accessible beyond the library. What is the role of the library as place when users do not need to visit the building to utilize library services and resources? We argue that the college library building’s core role is as a space for collaborative learning and community interaction which cannot be jettisoned in the new normal.

Learning By Example: Standardized Testing In The Cases Of China, Korea, Japan, And Taiwan, Osman Ozturgut

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Kandel (1881–1965) is the most widely recognized leader and founder of modern comparative education. He asserted that the direction of education in democratic nations ought to be “borrowed and adjusted” within the cultural context of each nation. He further argued that, “so many of the problems in education are today common to most countries; in their solution certain common principles . . . are involved; the practical outcomes may, however, differ because of differences in tradition, in social and political principles, and in cultural standards”(Kandel, 1936, p. 401). As Kandel (1933) suggested, the problems and purposes of education have in …

Ghost Dancing And The Iron Horse: Surving Through Tradition And Technology, Alex K. Ruuska Jul 2011

Ghost Dancing And The Iron Horse: Surving Through Tradition And Technology, Alex K. Ruuska

Publication

This article explores how railroad technologies, so critical in constructing the imagined nation of the nineteenth-century United States, were simultaneously shaped by multiple social groups including the native communities of North America. This analysis demonstrates how Native Americans’ resistance to and use of railroad technologies contributed to the revitalization and construction of ritual practices and pan-Indian identities associated with the 1890s Ghost Dance. Using case studies of the Northern Paiutes of western Nevada and the Sioux nations of South Dakota, Native Americans’ utilization of railroad technologies are examined during two periods of encroachment, revealing shifting attitudes and practices towards Euroamerican …

Firm Growth And Industrial Clusters: Implications For Latecomer Developing Countries, Babur Wasim Arif, Sajid Manzoor Asadi Jul 2011

Firm Growth And Industrial Clusters: Implications For Latecomer Developing Countries, Babur Wasim Arif, Sajid Manzoor Asadi

Business Review

In developing countries, traditionally micro and small scale enterprises have remained present since ancient times. Certain regions excelled in production of specific items. The industrial clusters have grown in these regions spontaneously in response to the grown competition. The cluster formation process was informal as the governments in developing countries have not played an adequate role for cluster formation and enterprises’ networking. Due to absence of government leading role in clusters development , the majority of the industrial clusters in developing countries have not been able to enter from the initiation stage to the quality improvement stage with a very …

Toward A Trips Truce, Patricia L. Judd Jul 2011

Toward A Trips Truce, Patricia L. Judd

Michigan Journal of International Law

The World Trade Organization's (WTO's) Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS or Agreement), now over fifteen years old, regulates a marketplace characterized by extraordinary dynamism, influenced by the constant forces of globalization and technological evolution. Attempts to regulate this market raise natural, persistent questions concerning the Agreement's ability to serve its respective constituencies and adapt to change. The Agreement operates in the midst of an age-old dynamic pitting developing and developed countries against one another, especially when it comes to domestic enforcement against piracy and counterfeiting-a dynamic in which TRIPS has been criticized as a one-sided instrument. …

Recruitment And Retention Of Diverse Populations In Antiretroviral Clinical Trials: Practical Applications From The Gender, Race And Clinical Experience Study., Ron Falcon, Dawn Averitt Bridge, Judith Currier, Kathleen Squires, Debbie Hagins, Deborah Schaible, Robert Ryan, Joseph Mrus

Division of Infectious Diseases and Environmental Medicine Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Women, particularly women of color, remain underrepresented in antiretroviral (ARV) clinical trials. To evaluate sex-based differences in darunavir/ritonavir-based therapy, the Gender, Race And Clinical Experience (GRACE) study was designed to enroll and retain a high proportion of women representative of the racial/ethnic demographics of women with HIV/AIDS in the United States. The recruitment and retention strategies used in GRACE are described in this article.

METHODS: Recruitment and retention strategies targeting women included selecting study sites that focused on women, involving community consultants, site-specific enrollment plans, access to other ARV drugs, study branding, site and patient toolkits, targeted public relations, …

Review Of Art Of West Texas Women: A Celebration By Kippra D. Hopper And Laurie J. Churchill, Michael R. Grauer Jul 2011

Review Of Art Of West Texas Women: A Celebration By Kippra D. Hopper And Laurie J. Churchill, Michael R. Grauer

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Texas historians, acknowledging women as art pioneers in Texas, rely on the old saw that while men were settling the state, women led the charge for cultural pursuits. Groups of women-trained artists among them-began organizing art activities in all parts of the state in the early 1880s on the heels of settlement, recognizing the importance of an appreciation of aesthetics and beauty to the development of a significant culture. Since most public school teachers in Texas were female, teaching art and bringing art to students were natural developments; women also founded Texas's first public art museums.

While scholars have acknowledged …

Review Of Dammed Indians Revisited: The Continuing History Of The Pick-Sloan Plan And The Missouri River Sioux By Michael L. Lawson, Roxanne T. Ornelas

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

George Santayana cautioned that "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." In Michael L. Lawson's Dammed Indians Revisited: The Continuing History of the Pick-Sloan Plan and the Missouri River Sioux, we are given a telling of one of our nation's greatest engineering blunders. Lawson enlightens us with a historical account of governmental mismanagement of almost unbelievable proportion. This revised volume is based on Lawson's 1982 book Dammed Indians: The Pick-Sloan Plan and the Missouri River Sioux, 1944- 1980; Dammed Indians Revisited picks up where he left off.

Review Of In The Footsteps Of Lewis And Clark: Early Commemorations And The Origins Of The National Historic Trail By Wallace G. Lewis, Jay H. Buckley

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

This informative and thought-provoking work analyzes the early commemorations of the Lewis and Clark Expedition and the origins of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. Neither a guidebook nor an administrative or institutional history of the agencies or organizations involved, this work is concerned with the interpretation and historical meanings of the expedition within the national ethos and how these have changed over time.

Wallace Lewis identifies the factors that contributed to the reinterpretation, resurgence of popularity, and amplification of the importance of the expedition. These included the erection of monuments and statues, the publication of various editions of …

Immigration To The Great Plains, 1865-1914 War, Politics, Technology, And Economic Development, Bruce Garver

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The advent and vast extent of immigration to the Great Plains states during the years 1865 to 1914 is perhaps best understood in light of the new international context that emerged during the 1860s in the aftermath of six large wars whose consequences included the enlargement of civil liberties, an acceleration of economic growth and technological innovation, the expansion of world markets, and the advent of mass immigration to the United States from east-central and southern Europe.1 Facilitating all of these changes was the achievement of widespread literacy through universal, free, compulsory, and state-funded elementary education in the United States, …
