Understanding The Sources Of The Sino-Islamic Intellectual Tradition: A Review Essay On The Sage Learning Of Liu Zhi: Islamic Thought In Confucian Terms, By Sachiko Murata, William C. Chittick, And Tu Weiming, And Recent Chinese Literary Treasuries, Kristian Petersen Jul 2011

Understanding The Sources Of The Sino-Islamic Intellectual Tradition: A Review Essay On The Sage Learning Of Liu Zhi: Islamic Thought In Confucian Terms, By Sachiko Murata, William C. Chittick, And Tu Weiming, And Recent Chinese Literary Treasuries, Kristian Petersen

Religion Faculty Publications

An oft-quoted Hadith purports that it is incumbent upon every Muslim to seek knowledge, even if it is to be found as far away as China.1 However, the plethora of knowledge that was discovered there generally has yet to be unraveled by Western academics. If the intellectual tradition of Chinese Muslims may appear to be of minor consequence to the larger field of Islamic studies, this is in part because of our failure to assess their influence. The abundant resources for understanding the Islamic sciences in China have barely been grazed and are awaiting our thorough analytical peregrination. This essay …

The Evolving Threat Of Al Qaeda In The Islamic Maghreb, Andre Lesage Jul 2011

The Evolving Threat Of Al Qaeda In The Islamic Maghreb, Andre Lesage

Strategic Forums

The United States faces an important strategic question in northwest Af- rica: what level of activity by al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) would constitute a sufficient threat to U.S. national security interests a more aggressive political, intelligence, military, and law enforcement AQIM already poses the greatest immediate threat of transnational terrorism in the region, and its operational range and sophistication continue to expand. Since 2007, the group has professed its loyalty to Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda’s senior leadership and claimed responsibility for dozens of attacks in the subregion. These attacks have included the use of suicide …

Dynamo In The Desert: Energy Development And Environmental Contestation In The San Juan Basin, 1960-1985, S. Andrew Wakefield

History ETDs

This thesis examines coal-energy development in the San Juan Basin, which is located in the culturally rich and environmentally diverse Four Corners region. Between 1960 and 1985 intensive coal-energy development—in the form of strip mines and power plants—took place in the western portion of the San Juan Basin. This period saw the enactment of major environmental legislation and the rise of the modern environmental movement. My thesis specifically focuses on how this development unleashed environmental damage upon the regions land, water, and air. Beyond examining environmental destruction, my thesis explores how different groups came into conflict over coal-energy development. The …

Higher Education Research And The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning: The Pursuit Of Excellence, Angela Brew

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Excerpt: The scholarship of teaching and learning includes many activities all of which are focused on critically reflecting on teaching and learning in some way. In the last 10 years or so I have worked at two different universities in Australia both of which have devised ways of rewarding scholarly activities related to teaching. These activities take the form of a) engaging in sustained study and gaining qualifications in teaching in higher education, b) being in receipt of institutional and/or national awards for teaching excellence and c) presenting scholarly work on higher education teaching and learning in conferences and journals. …

Reclaiming A Writing Voice As A New Teacher Educator: Sotl As Portal, Susan E. Elliott-Johns Ph.D. Jul 2011

Reclaiming A Writing Voice As A New Teacher Educator: Sotl As Portal, Susan E. Elliott-Johns Ph.D.

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This essay explores the author’s self-directed experience of re-claiming a writing voice as a new teacher educator in a faculty of education after many years as a practitioner in public school systems. The benefits of an increased understanding of SoTL became critical to the individual’s own development as a member of faculty, specifically in overcoming obstacles encountered in writing for academic audiences. Presenting reflections on experience, notes, and journal entries over time, the piece offers insight into one individual’s struggles in transitioning to sustained ‘scholarly’ writing for publication, but also suggests this is not an unfamiliar tale. The author concludes …

Modernizing Marriage, Adam Candeub, Mae Kuykendall Jul 2011

Modernizing Marriage, Adam Candeub, Mae Kuykendall

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

This Article proposes to modernize the archaic procedures states use to authorize marriages so as to provide legal flexibility, promote efficiency, and enhance individual choice. Almost universally, states require couples' presence within their borders, however briefly, for a ceremony. After considering the historical and policy rationales for this requirement and finding them either obsolete or incoherent, we propose that states offer marriages to those outside their borders. Such distance marriages could occur via video-conference, using the internet or even telephone, with readily available safeguards to prevent fraud. This simple reform would allow certain couples who cannot marry under local law …

Emphasizing Substance: Making The Case For A Shift In Political Speech Jurisprudence, Anastasia N. Niedrich Jul 2011

Emphasizing Substance: Making The Case For A Shift In Political Speech Jurisprudence, Anastasia N. Niedrich

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Political speech is vital to a functioning democracy and is highly protected. That much is hardly disputed. What courts, legal scholars, and those seeking to convey a political message do dispute is how political speech should be identified and protected, and who should decide what constitutes political speech. This Note looks at the history of political speech doctrine and critiques two intent-based approaches that have been proposed by First Amendment scholars to define political speech. This Note proposes a solution to many problems inherent in defining, identifying, and protecting political speech within intent-based frameworks, arguing that focusing on intent creates …

Techniques To Promote Garry Oak Seedling Growth And Survival In Areas With High Levels Of Herbivory And Competition, David R. Clements, Seth Luginbill, David A. Jordan, Randall Dragt

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Though regeneration of Garry oak (Quercus garryana) seedlings within Garry oak ecosystems is important to maintain this threatened habitat, seedling regeneration is often poor. Two independent studies were initiated in the early 2000s to examine questions surrounding Garry oak recruitment: one at the Crow's Nest Ecological Research Area (CNERA) on Salt Spring Island, BC, and another at the Pacific Rim Institute for Environmental Stewardship (PRI) on Whidbey Island, WA. In both areas, Garry oak seedlings were caged and monitored for growth and relative health. Over 8 years at CNERA, growth of caged plants outpaced growth of controls, which was indicative …

Asset Mapping: Community Geography Project

The goals for this project entailed collecting both quantitative and qualitative data about selected neighborhoods in Portland. The quantitative data included photo documentation of all buildings and lots (e.g. parking lots or vacant lots) within the study areas. Other empirical data collected included the address(es) of the buildings, the number of stories and/or mailboxes, land use categories such as commercial or residential (including exclusive as well as mixed use categories), the name and type of business, and the spatial coordinates of the building (latitude/longitude). This data was collected in order to provide an objective "picture" of the neighborhood at a …

Broken Systems, Broken Duties: A New Theory For School Finance Litigation, Aaron Y. Tang Jul 2011

Broken Systems, Broken Duties: A New Theory For School Finance Litigation, Aaron Y. Tang

Marquette Law Review

In May 2010, a coalition of California students, parents, and school districts filed a ground-breaking lawsuit alleging that the state’s public school finance system violates the California constitution. The lawsuit, Robles-Wong v. California, is not ground-breaking because of its basic aim; at last count, school finance lawsuits with similar goals have occurred in forty-four states. Instead, the lawsuit is path-breaking because of the novel approach plaintiffs used to frame their constitutional challenge. Historically, plaintiffs have sued state governments using two legal theories: the equity theory and the adequacy theory. Under the equity theory, plaintiffs argue that the states distribute school …

Addressing Renewable Energy Development At The Local Level By Learning How To Plan Through Green Building: An Example Of Community-Based Planning On The Navajo Reservation, Gepetta S. Billie

Architecture and Planning ETDs

This thesis considers energy development, specifically how the Navajo Nation can address renewable energy development at the local chapter level by incorporating green building strategies into housing planning and development. The objective is to make sense of how individual Navajo chapters, like Tsé Łichii, can learn to plan and build better housing through green building techniques with the ultimate goal of addressing energy on the Navajo reservation. Through planning theory and ideas for how to apply these concepts to individual chapter needs, this thesis will explain how the Navajo Nation as a whole can plan for sustainable renewable energy development …

Small Wars Logistics: The Intervention In Haiti, 1915–1934, Jenna Schutz Jul 2011

Small Wars Logistics: The Intervention In Haiti, 1915–1934, Jenna Schutz

Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Tailored to a unit’s size, scope, and mission, logistics or the practical art of transporting and supplying military forces via air, land, and sea is at the heart of any military operation. During the late nineteenth century the United States became increasingly involved in low intensity conflicts throughout Latin America and the Philippines. The nature of small wars required not only military provisions, but also supplies to help stabilize countries. The 1915 intervention in Haiti by the U.S. Marine Corps and Navy is a prime case study for the flexible bifurcation of logistical efforts to support military and civic operations. …

The Rubicon Theory Of War: How The Path To Conflict Reaches The Point Of No Return, D. D. P. Johnson, Dominic Tierney Jul 2011

The Rubicon Theory Of War: How The Path To Conflict Reaches The Point Of No Return, D. D. P. Johnson, Dominic Tierney

Political Science Faculty Works

A major paradox in international relations is the widespread fear and anxiety that underlies the security dilemma in times of peace and the prevalence of overconfidence or "false optimism" on the eve of war. A new theory of the causes of war—the Rubicon theory of war—can account for this paradox and explain important historical puzzles. The "Rubicon model of action phases," which was developed in experimental psychology, describes a significant shift in people's susceptibility to psychological biases before and after making a decision. Prior to making decisions, people tend to maintain a "deliberative" mind-set, weighing the costs, benefits, and risks …

Preventing Workplace Injuries Commonly Sustained By Hotel Guestroom Attendants, Jennifer Daros Jul 2011

Preventing Workplace Injuries Commonly Sustained By Hotel Guestroom Attendants, Jennifer Daros

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Introduction:

Hotels are generally organized into various departments. These provide specialized services to guests. Almost every hotel in the world has (in one form or another) a housekeeping department. Guestroom attendants (GRAs) are a primary component of any housekeeping department. GRAs (also known as maids, housekeepers, or room/suite service attendants) are employed by hotels to clean guestrooms, change bed linens, restock supplies, and provide turn down services when requested (see Appendix A). Those employed as GRAs frequently suffer injuries at work that can be costly to employers. This paper reviews some of the more common causes of GRA workplace injuries …

Environmental Controls And Distributions Of Surface Foraminifera From The Otter Estuary Salt Marsh, Uk: Their Potential Use As Sea Level Indicators, Stephen Allen Jul 2011

Environmental Controls And Distributions Of Surface Foraminifera From The Otter Estuary Salt Marsh, Uk: Their Potential Use As Sea Level Indicators, Stephen Allen

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Fifty-six surface samples were collected from the Otter estuary salt marsh, Devon, UK. Previous work from temperate salt marshes have shown the vertical distribution of foraminifera is primarily controlled by the duration of tidal flooding, whilst working on the general assumption that the elevation of the intertidal zone controls the variations of any environmental parameters affecting foraminifera distributions. Cluster analysis identifies three foraminifera assemblage zones, and a clear vertical distribution of species within the high and low marsh zones is present. However Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) identifies that within the middle marsh elevation has less of a control over the …

What Drives U.S. Banking Mergers: Misvaluation, Gambling Or Envy?, Wenjia Zhang Jul 2011

What Drives U.S. Banking Mergers: Misvaluation, Gambling Or Envy?, Wenjia Zhang

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

The thesis consists of three essays that examine whether U.S. bank mergers are motivated by market inefficiency and managerial psychology biases. Essay I investigates equity misvaluation as a possible driver for United States banking mergers from the perspective of market inefficiency, and finds that bidders tend to use overvalued equity to buy undervalued targets. Essay II, motivated by the cumulative prospect theory of Tversky and Kahneman (1992), tests whether managerial gambling attitudes are linked with lottery characteristics of target banks (i.e., high skewness, high volatility, and low price). The evidence shows that banking acquisitions are influenced by gambling attitudes rooted …

Automatic High-Fidelity 3d Road Network Modeling, Jie Wang Jul 2011

Automatic High-Fidelity 3d Road Network Modeling, Jie Wang

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Many computer applications such as racing games and driving simulations frequently make use of 3D high-fidelity road network models for a variety of purposes. However, there are very few existing methods for automatic generation of 3D realistic road networks, especially for those in the real world. On the other hand, vast road network GIS data have been collected in the past and used by a wide range of applications, such as navigation and evaluation. A method that can automatically produce 3D high-fidelity road network models from 2D real road GIS data will significantly reduce both the labor and time needed …

The New Aztecs: Ritual And Restraint In Contemporary Western Military Operations, Zhivan Alach Dr. Jul 2011

The New Aztecs: Ritual And Restraint In Contemporary Western Military Operations, Zhivan Alach Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The Western way of war has come full circle. After centuries of evolution toward increased totality and brutality, it has turned back once again to the ritualistic and restrained methods of primitive warfare. Largely, this has been due to an interaction between the perceived lack of utility in contemporary warfare, developing humanitarian public opinion, and increasing professionalism among militaries. The significance of these evolutionary trends in the way that the West engages in modern warfare is that they are potentially dangerous, and they include the possibility that the West will be unprepared for a future foe whose defeat requires more …

Media Landscape In Twitter: A World Of New Conventions And Political Diversity, Jisun An, Meeyoung Cha, Krishna Gummadi, Jon Crowcroft

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We present a preliminary but groundbreaking study of the media landscape of Twitter. We use public data on whom follows who to uncover common behaviour in media consumption, the relationship between various classes of media, and the diversity of media content which social links may bring. Our analysis shows that there is a non-negligible amount of indirect media exposure, either through friends who follow particular media sources, or via retweeted messages. We show that the indirect media exposure expands the political diversity of news to which users are exposed to a surprising extent, increasing the range by between 60-98%. These …
