General Education: Learning From The Past, Preparing For The Future, Karen Gersten

Higher Learning Research Communications

This article explores the widening gap between business and societal needs and current general education curricula. Research is presented that documents gaps between projected needs of industry and current practices in postsecondary education especially in the general education areas. Positive efforts to close the gap are highlighted. Also highlighted are changing regulatory environments, some that support forward-thinking approaches to liberal education and others that revert to traditional educational practices. With a focus on adaptability and intentional teaching and learning, recommendations are presented for flexible curriculum, intentional pedagogy, and a backwards approach to the teaching-learning enterprise that begins with authentic assessment …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The nematode Caenorhabditis briggsae is an emerging model organism that allows evolutionary comparisons with C. elegans and exploration of its own unique biological attributes. To produce a high-resolution C. briggsae recombination map, recombinant inbred lines were generated from reciprocal crosses between two strains and genotyped at over 1,000 loci. A second set of recombinant inbred lines involving a third strain was also genotyped at lower resolution. The resulting recombination maps exhibit discrete domains of high and low recombination, as in C. elegans, indicating these are a general feature of Caenorhabditis species. The proportion of a chromosome's physical size occupied by …

A Content Analysis Of Exemplars In Weekly U.S. News Magazines, Lincoln Thomas Hubbard

Theses and Dissertations

This study was designed to research whether the conditions that give rise to exemplar effects in experimental designs are present in the real world, specifically by conducting a comprehensive content analysis of news articles in weekly U.S. news magazines. Exemplification studies the relationship between examples and the larger population they represent, and how examples effect consumer's perceptions and behaviors (Zillmann & Brosius, 2000). In experimental design several independent variable have been tested and have shown that people's perceptions fall largely in line with the emphasis of the exemplars presented. A stratified random sample of magazines, representative of a whole year, …

Teaching Social Justice Through The Lens Of Multicultural Education, Alana Cimillo Jul 2011

Teaching Social Justice Through The Lens Of Multicultural Education, Alana Cimillo

Pell Scholars and Senior Theses

With public school populations growing in socio-economic and racial diversity, as projected by the Census Bureau, there is a clear need for an understanding of this diversity to occur at the early childhood level. In order to truly adopt multicultural education as an integral part of a student’s academic growth, teachers must consider the meaning of “cultural competence”. In the first years of a student’s education, fundamental values can be developed as the building blocks for future culturally responsive human beings. This presentation will review concrete evidence that supports the incorporation of multicultural education early childhood classrooms.

Using A Multi-Sensory Teaching Approach To Impact Learning And Community In A Second Grade Classroom, Melissa Stoffers

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine how multi-sensory education impacts learning and community in a second grade general education classroom. Lesson plans that targeted multiple senses - and oftentimes included team-building activities - were developed and implemented in the classroom. Qualitative data was collected through interviews, focus groups, student work, and a teacher research journal. After analyzing the data, it was revealed that multi-sensory education can lead to student motivation and engagement, as well as provide a generative space for the use of technology and making connections to the outside world. Multi-sensory education can also help teachers to …

Climate Change And Water Resources: The Role Of Risk Management Methods, David C. Major Jul 2011

Climate Change And Water Resources: The Role Of Risk Management Methods, David C. Major

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Risk management methods in water resources in the
United States and elsewhere have been applied within the
context of highly developed sets of planning criteria. In
considering these methods, many of which are listed here,
it is helpful to distinguish between the use of these
techniques to assess risk and to manage risk. While the
use of risk assessment and management methods for
water resources planning varies widely among agencies,
the robustness and resiliency of existing methods for risk
management in water planning have the potential to serve
effectively as the basis for adapting to changes in the
supply and …

Principles And Concepts For Water Resources Planning Under Climate Uncertainty, Kenneth D. Frederick Jul 2011

Principles And Concepts For Water Resources Planning Under Climate Uncertainty, Kenneth D. Frederick

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Possible impacts of a greenhouse warming include
changes in precipitation and runoff patterns, sea level
rise, land use and population shifts that may follow from
these effects, and increased demand for irrigation water
in regions with higher temperatures and reduced
precipitation. Introducing climate change into the
planning process involves a sequence of models and
techniques that result in a cascade of uncertainties.
Although climate change is not explicitly cited as an
issue in the Principles and Guidelines (US Water
Resources Council, 1983) used by designated federal
water resources agencies, their planning and evaluation
principles and methods are flexible enough to …

Online Communities: Influence On Members Brand Loyalty And Purchase Intent, Brian J. Wilimzig

Research Papers

With the emergence of new media technologies it is becoming easier for brands to interact and engage with consumers in an attempt to build brand loyalty. One trend gaining popularity is the use of online branded communities, purpose-built social networks with focus (direct or indirect) on a brand. Branded communities tend to give more specific value to the brand owner and the members, allowing for greater communication and collaboration around the brand. Using the uses and gratification as a theoretical framework this study set out to explore the influence online brand communities have on members brand loyalty and intent to …

Effectiveness Of Forest Management Strategies To Mitigate Effects Of Global Change In South-Central Siberia, Eric J. Gustafson, Anatoly Z. Shvidenko, Robert M. Scheller

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

We investigated questions about the ability of broad silvicultural strategies to achieve multiple objectives (reduce disturbance losses, maintain the abundance of preferred species, mitigate fragmentation and loss of age-class diversity, and sequester aboveground carbon) under future climate conditions in Siberia. We conducted a factorial experiment using the LANDIS-II landscape disturbance and succession model. Treatments included varying the size and amount of areas cut and the cutting method (selective or clearcut). Simultaneously, the model simulated natural disturbances (fire, wind, insect out-breaks) and forest succession under projected future climate conditions as predicted by an ensemble of global circulation models. The cutting method …

Collecting International Merchant Seafarer Oral Histories: Experiences And Reflections, Tom Matyók Jul 2011

Collecting International Merchant Seafarer Oral Histories: Experiences And Reflections, Tom Matyók

The Qualitative Report

Investigating highly mobile labor populations presents researchers with unique challenges and opportunities. In this paper, I share my experiences and reflections in collecting international merchant seafarers' oral histories and propose to move the dialogue forward regarding the use of hybrid qualitative research practices. Seafarers are constantly moving, at sea and in port, and traditional research methodologies are inadequate in determining the nature of modern-day seafaring. I suggest how qualitative research methods must be flexible enough to accommodate researchers' needs in a chaotic global milieu. Investigators researching highly mobile labor populations, as well as mobile immigrant and refugee communities, can gain …

Visualizing The Intersection Of The Personal And The Social Context - The Use Of Multi-Layered Chronological Charts In Biographical Studies, Patrick T. Hiller Jul 2011

Visualizing The Intersection Of The Personal And The Social Context - The Use Of Multi-Layered Chronological Charts In Biographical Studies, Patrick T. Hiller

The Qualitative Report

This paper outlines the theoretical reasoning and technical implementation of a particular approach to creating multi-layered chronological charts in qualitative biographical studies. The discussed method elucidates the interpretation of traditional life chronologies where the individual's "objective" life facts are reconstructed free from analysis. The novelty of multi-layered chronological charts lies in their ability to enrich the visualization of a temporal connection between personal and social contextual factors based on categories determined by the researcher. In doing so, such charts make existing interview data more accessible and processable. In-depth, thematic data analysis can be supported through the visualization of prominent life …

Hollywood's Other America: Neoliberalism, Us Hegemony, And The Construction Of An Imaginative Geography Of The Americas In Contemporary Us Film, Brent Smith

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

This thesis explores the production of Latin America as a space in Hollywood films in the context of neoliberal hegemony and the shifting power relations of late capitalist globalization. Drawing on Edward Said's notion of 'imaginative geographies' I examine the way in which Hollywood representations of Latin America have constructed a spatio-temporal imaginative geography of the Americas that structures US knowledge of Latin America, arguing that these representations form part of a neocolonial discourse that legitimates neoliberal economic expansion and direct US military or political intervention in Latin America. In contemporary US film, this geographic imaginary is produced through representations …

Crow History 1700-1950: A Political And Social Battle To Retain Their Culture, Alden Big Man Jr. Jul 2011

Crow History 1700-1950: A Political And Social Battle To Retain Their Culture, Alden Big Man Jr.

History ETDs

In my dissertation, 'Crow History 1700 — 1950: A Political and Social Battle to Retain their Culture,' I argue that the Social and Familial Kinship system utilized by the Crow is unique, and helped the Crows to preserve much of their Culture throughout the turbulent times of direct contact and assimilation. In this research I examine the movement of the Crows from eastern woodlands onto the Northern Plains, with an emphasis on the separation from the parent tribe. I argue the Crow purposely create a new and unique maternally based social and familial kinship system because of the separation from …

The Infrastructure Of Influence: Transnational Collaboration And The Spread Of Us Cultural Influence In Colombia, 1930s-1960s, David Andrew Corcoran Jul 2011

The Infrastructure Of Influence: Transnational Collaboration And The Spread Of Us Cultural Influence In Colombia, 1930s-1960s, David Andrew Corcoran

History ETDs

This dissertation examines the growth of US cultural influence in Andean and Caribbean Colombia during World War II and the first half the Cold War (1930s-1960s). Exploring Colombian-US collaboration in educational and cultural arenas, the study articulates a mid-century shift in Colombian cultural orientation away from Europe and toward the US. Analyzing the cultural complexities of Colombian-US relations during those decades, it demonstrates why this shift began and how it was sustained. While the study credits US cultural diplomacy with encouraging the shift, it emphasizes the role of Colombians in building the new cultural infrastructure that facilitated it. Intent on …

Domestic Violence And Empire: Legacies Of Conquest In Mexican American Writing, Leigh Johnson Jul 2011

Domestic Violence And Empire: Legacies Of Conquest In Mexican American Writing, Leigh Johnson

English Language and Literature ETDs

This dissertation posits that writers can symbolically represent domestic violence to critique unjust gender relations as well as iniquitous US policy toward Mexican Americans. I use the term domestic violence because it most closely describes the double voiced discourse women engage to critique communities that condone violence against women as well as a country that perpetrates violence against Mexican Americans within its borders. Put broadly, domestic violence refers to threats of sexual, emotional, or psychological abuse within the home. Furthermore, patriarchal control over womens agency, sexuality, and mobility in turn-of-the-century texts also indicates domestic violence through social and historical conditions. …

Philip St. George Cooke: On The Vanguard Of Western Expansion With The U.S. Army, 1827-1848, Jeffrey V. Pearson

History ETDs

During the first two decades of his remarkable forty-six years of military service, from 1827 to 1848, Philip St. George Cooke literally crossed the continent as a member of the United States Army and contributed significantly to the establishment of the nation as a continental empire. Initially as a member of the Sixth Infantry, and more prominently as an officer in the elite First Regiment of United States Dragoons, Cooke participated in the vital missions conducted by the frontier army to secure the nations claims to its western territories. He explored the frontier, gathered information on its resources and inhabitants, …

Finance And Pornography At The Sec: A Media Studies Approach, Mark Hayward Jul 2011

Finance And Pornography At The Sec: A Media Studies Approach, Mark Hayward

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This short piece examines investigations into the use of workplace computers to access pornographic material at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of the United States. Rather than focus on the individual or institutional morality of these activities, it examines what thinking about the role played by media in these violations of SEC policy tell us about the changing nature of institutional power and labour in the contemporary moment. Looking at practices of media use and the legal frameworks that structured the porn scandal at the SEC, it concludes by suggesting that media-oriented approach to the economy raises many possibilities …
