Spiritualism, Science, And Suspense: Theosophy And The Supernatural Adventure Story, Richard Michael Caputo Aug 2011

Spiritualism, Science, And Suspense: Theosophy And The Supernatural Adventure Story, Richard Michael Caputo

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

With Darwin's publication of The Origin of the Species in 1859, the validity of the three major Western religions was called into serious question by science. In the wake of the scientific progress, made at breakneck speed in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century, it seemed as if science and spirituality were increasingly becoming mutually exclusive. However, Theosophy, a hybrid science-religion founded by Madame Helena Petrovna Blavatsky in 1875, sought to reconcile science and the supernatural by using the former to explain the latter. For Blavatsky, the miraculous and the paranormal did not defy scientific explanation; they simply could not be …

A Dragon Eyes The Top Of The World: Arctic Policy Debate And Discussion In China, David Curtis Wright Aug 2011

A Dragon Eyes The Top Of The World: Arctic Policy Debate And Discussion In China, David Curtis Wright

CMSI Red Books

The Chinese are increasingly interested in the effects of global climate change and the melting of the Arctic ice cap, especially as they pertain to emergent sea routes, natural resources, and geopolitical advantage. China seems to see the overall effect of Arctic climate change as more of a beckoning economic opportunity than a looming environmental crisis. Even though it is not an Arctic country, China wants to be among the first states to exploit the region’s natural resource wealth and to ply ships through its sea routes, especially the Northwest Passage.

The Challenges Of Urban Development Case Study – Prizren, Besa Jagxhiu Aug 2011

The Challenges Of Urban Development Case Study – Prizren, Besa Jagxhiu

Theses and Dissertations

Prizren, what was, what it is now and what is going to be? The city with rich values of cultural and historical heritage, civilization and various religions and ethnicities used to be an important center of culture, trade and diplomacy, during the history, since the antiquity, which was known also as a “City Museum”. Nowadays, unfortunately there are no efforts for preserving and promoting these rich values, and with this trend in which is going, it cannot be seen the bright future for it. Prizren historic center is the best example of urban heritage in Kosovo, which has valuable traces …

Extreme Makeover: Country Edition, Susanna Pierce

Understanding by Design: Complete Collection

This capstone unit in an AP Macroeconomics course pushes students to critically apply the economic skills gained from the semester into practice. As representatives of an NGO, students create a proposal for the World Bank that demonstrates why their development project will stimulate economic growth in their assigned region of the world; ultimately, students will strive to convince the members to subsidize the implementation of this specific project.

In the four-week unit, students will discover the strategies of economic development. First, they will be exposed to shocking statistics and economic indicators that reveal the gravity of poverty worldwide. These numbers …

Networks In The Legislative Arena: How Group Dynamics Affect Cosponsorship, Kathleen A. Bratton, Stella M. Rouse Aug 2011

Networks In The Legislative Arena: How Group Dynamics Affect Cosponsorship, Kathleen A. Bratton, Stella M. Rouse

Faculty Publications

In this study, we explore the determinants of cosponsorship activity within state legislatures. Utilizing a social dynamic framework, we develop and test a model of the interplay of the activities of sponsorship and cosponsorship that includes both individual-level and social network characteristics as determinants of agenda-setting behavior; the latter demonstrating how collaboration and mutual interests shape the agenda-setting process. We find several consistent factors that influence the frequency of cosponsorship activity: (1) ideological distance, (2) proximity of legislators' districts, (3) homophily (similar characteristics such as race, gender, and ethnicity), and (4) transitivity (the idea that friends of my friends are …

Socioeconomics And The Digital Divide : Access, Literacy, And The Online-Classroom Space At The U.S. Postsecondary Institution, Alison Lorraine Nolan Aug 2011

Socioeconomics And The Digital Divide : Access, Literacy, And The Online-Classroom Space At The U.S. Postsecondary Institution, Alison Lorraine Nolan

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This study examines the challenges faced by educators and students and how socioeconomics, the digital divide, and a lack of access can potentially lead to low digital-literacy rates. The digital divide describes those who have access to broadband (high-speed) Internet connections and those who do not. Since education has become reliant on technology, those who cannot access the academic-digital space are at a disadvantage. The primary focus of this thesis is to define digital literacy in online, hybrid, and face-to-face composition classrooms at the postsecondary level. A review of literature was supplemented by a brief survey to students attending Montclair …

George Steiner And The War Against The Jews: A Study In Misrepresentation, Roger W. Smith Aug 2011

George Steiner And The War Against The Jews: A Study In Misrepresentation, Roger W. Smith

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

The literary and cultural critic George Steiner has been described as the pre- eminent literary critic of the past fifty years. Certainly, he has written eloquently about aspects of the Holocaust, and his emphasis on language and its power to make and unmake much of human life, has been widely influential. Yet Steiner’s work on the Holocaust is misleading in its interpretations, explanations, and implications. Part of this stems from his worry that the Jews brought their near destruction upon themselves: that they had invented the practice of genocide, had invented the idea of a ‘‘chosen people,’’ had through Moses, …

Urban Consumption In Late 19th-Century Dorchester, Jennifer Poulsen Aug 2011

Urban Consumption In Late 19th-Century Dorchester, Jennifer Poulsen

Anthropology, Historical Archaeology Masters Theses Collection

This thesis examines the bottles recovered from an 1895 fill deposit at the Blake House site in Dorchester, MA, to determine what inconspicuous consumption reveals about the anonymous consumers of Dorchester in the late 19th century. The assemblage is composed of 1,892 pieces of bottle glass, representing food, alcohol, medicine, and household products, 73 with original paper labels. The analysis presented here demonstrates the consumers were from several households and included men, women and children from immigrant populations. Despite evidence for intensive recycling of bottles, indicating that these individuals were under economic stress, they had some amount of discretionary money …

The Dark Continent: Europe's Encroachment Upon English Identity In Jane Eyre And Villette, Derek Williams Aug 2011

The Dark Continent: Europe's Encroachment Upon English Identity In Jane Eyre And Villette, Derek Williams

All Theses

ABSTRACT
Although there has been a deafening critical silence regarding Charlotte Bront‘'s representation of Continental identity in Jane Eyre (1847), this thesis argues that the Continental identity, as it appears in Jane Eyre, is a collection of negative cultural traits stereotypical of the Latinate countries and Germany. By creating associations between characters that embody English national identity and those that are an emblem of Continental identity, Bront‘ de-legitimizes the notion of national identity. Furthermore, her novels, specifically Jane Eyre and Villette (1853) highlight the fact that both France and Germany, elements of the Continental identity, are a central presence in …

The Health Status, Concerns, And Reform In Uruguay With An Emphasis On Health Promotion Programs Geared Towards The Care And Development Of The Country's Children And Adolescents, Melissa Raquel Ramírez

Honors Scholar Theses

This study was conducted in Montevideo, Uruguay, where I examined the actions that the country and society as a whole, its various communities, the Uruguayan government, and the people take in order to prevent disease and promote a healthy society. An ethnographic experiential and evidence-based approach, including personal experience, interviews, and official government documents, was used to fully describe the way the system operates. Due to Uruguay's demographic characteristics, particular attention was paid to children and adolescents. For this thesis, Uruguay is described in terms of its history, physical and mental health issues, society's shared health concerns, and its vulnerable …

The Priority Of Racial Constituency Over Descriptive Representation, Michael James Aug 2011

The Priority Of Racial Constituency Over Descriptive Representation, Michael James

Faculty Journal Articles

Several normative political theorists argue for racially descriptive representation, or for blacks to represent blacks. I contend that if theorists believe that blacks deserve additional measures to improve their substantive political representation, then they should prioritize the creation of racial constituencies independently of whether such constituencies elect black representatives. Prioritizing racial constituency circumvents essentialism within descriptive representation and better reflects the role of electoral authorization and accountability in generating trust between representatives and constituents. As a result, descriptive representation becomes one of several criteria (along with other identity markers, ideological proximity, and general competence and trustworthiness) to be applied by …

Effects Of Background Context And Signaling On Comprehension Recall And Cognitive Load: The Perspective Of Cognitive Load Theory, Minjung Song Aug 2011

Effects Of Background Context And Signaling On Comprehension Recall And Cognitive Load: The Perspective Of Cognitive Load Theory, Minjung Song

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This study was designed to examine the effects of different geographical background contexts for information on comprehension, recall, and cognitive load. Two different contexts, American geographical background and Korean geographical background, were employed to frame explanations of global warming phenomena. Students’ comprehension was calibrated by two different levels of measurement, which were fact-level learning (shallow understanding) and inference-making (deep understanding). Cognitive load was gauged by self-reported levels of motivation, difficulty, and mental effort. It was hypothesized that an American context would be more familiar and Korean context less familiar for American students. It was also hypothesized that unfamiliar contexts would …

Bamboo People—An Interdisciplinary Unit For High School, Mitzi Moore

Understanding by Design: Complete Collection

A summer assignment asks students to read the book Bamboo People, by Mitali Perkins, and complete assignments in every class that are connected to the book. At the beginning of the school year, teachers use the assignments to extend the learning and help students understand the major themes of the book (child soldiers, landmines, literacy, and service to others). A video conference with the author is planned, as well as interactions with people familiar with modern-day Myanmar/Burma. The culminating activity is to bring all the assignments together in one place by publishing a blog post.

Geochronologic And Isotopic Investigation Of The Koipato Formation, Northwestern Great Basin, Nevada: Implications For Late Permian-Early Triassic Tectonics Along The Western U.S. Cordillera, Nicholas Quentin Vetz Aug 2011

Geochronologic And Isotopic Investigation Of The Koipato Formation, Northwestern Great Basin, Nevada: Implications For Late Permian-Early Triassic Tectonics Along The Western U.S. Cordillera, Nicholas Quentin Vetz

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The volcanics of the Early Triassic Koipato Formation of central Nevada unconformably overlie the Golconda Allochthon and, classically, this relationship has been used to define the timing of the Sonoma Orogeny as post-Middle Permian to earliest Triassic. However, the Koipato Formation represents a rather isolated magmatic succession, with other western U.S. Early Mesozoic igneous provinces determined to be younger or lacking rocks of Koipato age. This isolation, coupled with the fact that the Koipato Formation does not overlap the Golconda Allochthon, has left open two possible scenarios for its tectonic history: 1) the Koipato Formation represents the earliest, post-Sonoma Orogeny …

Investigating The Effects Of Addition With Regrouping Strategy Instruction Among Elementary Students With Learning Disabilities, Christi Miller Carmack Aug 2011

Investigating The Effects Of Addition With Regrouping Strategy Instruction Among Elementary Students With Learning Disabilities, Christi Miller Carmack

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Many students, specifically those with learning disabilities, struggle to master foundational computation skills such as addition with regrouping. With this in mind, the purpose of this research was to examine the effects of strategy instruction that involved the use of the concrete-representational-abstract teaching sequence on the addition with regrouping computation and word problem-solving skills of students with learning disabilities. This study involved the use of a multiple probe across participants design with two replications. The participants included nine second through sixth graders who had been identified as having a learning disability and were demonstrating mathematics difficulties. There were three females …

Historical Diversification Of Montane Herpetofauna Within And Between The Sierras Of Mexico, Robert William Bryson Jr. Aug 2011

Historical Diversification Of Montane Herpetofauna Within And Between The Sierras Of Mexico, Robert William Bryson Jr.

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The Mexican highlands consist of four major mountain ranges spanning most of mainland Mexico. The evolutionary history of the Mexican highlands has been shaped by various geological and climatic events over the past several million years. The relative impacts of these historical events on diversification in montane taxa, however, remains uncertain. I used mitochondrial DNA data from three widely distributed species complexes of lizards as a model system to exemplify the potential roles of Neogene mountain formation and Quaternary climate change on timing and tempo of diversification across the Mexican highlands. My results suggested strong geographic partitioning of genetic variation …

Climate And Vegetation Change In The Newberry Mountains, Southern Clark County, Nevada, Ross Joseph Guida Aug 2011

Climate And Vegetation Change In The Newberry Mountains, Southern Clark County, Nevada, Ross Joseph Guida

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Ecological studies have shown worldwide that vegetation is being affected by climate change. Species are shifting to new elevations and physiographic positions to adapt to changes in their environment. More specifically, paleoecology studies in the Mojave Desert have shown shifting vegetation patterns in response to past warming and precipitation changes. Recent studies have shown mortality among desert plants related to extended drought and warming. However, few studies have shown how the geographic distribution of Mojave Desert species has changed during this most recent period of warming. This study addresses this gap in the literature by focusing on several plant species …

Indigent Women And Access To Prenatal Care, Zoe Ann Zelazny Aug 2011

Indigent Women And Access To Prenatal Care, Zoe Ann Zelazny

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

One aspect of America's health care system that illustrates the great need for health care reform, but receives little attention, is prenatal care. The United States has the second worst newborn mortality rate in the developed world. Adequate prenatal care results in healthier babies, more full-term babies delivered, and a decrease in other serious problems related to pregnancy and health care costs. The purpose of this study is to examine the history of prenatal policy and how it has developed into what it is today, to understand why medically indigent women are not receiving adequate prenatal care, and to highlight …

Glacier Change, Concentration, And Elevation Effects In The Karakoram Himalaya, Upper Indus Basin, Kenneth Hewitt Aug 2011

Glacier Change, Concentration, And Elevation Effects In The Karakoram Himalaya, Upper Indus Basin, Kenneth Hewitt

Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

In recent decades the consequences of climate change for Himalayan glaciers has become of great concern. Glaciers in much of High Asia appear to be declining, some at globally extreme rates (Ageta 2001;Oerlemanns 2001). It had been widely reported that the Indus basin is threatened with severe losses. However, emerging evidence suggests that such reports were, at best, exaggerated (Raina 2009;Armstrong 2010).

Several inquiries have concluded that the behavior of Karakoram glaciers differs from those in the rest of the Himalaya and from the more intensively studied European and North American glaciers (Mayewski and Jeschke 1979; Kick 1989; Shroder et …

The Barriers And Enabling Factors To Public Health Advocacy Skills In Kentucky Local Health Departments., Joan Buchar Aug 2011

The Barriers And Enabling Factors To Public Health Advocacy Skills In Kentucky Local Health Departments., Joan Buchar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Background: One of the core functions of public health is to develop policies that support community and individual health. There are many historic examples in which public health practitioners have advocated successfully for policies that ultimately protected and improved populations' health. Prior research suggests that local health departments are not fully engaged in health policy advocacy, thereby missing opportunities to more effectively solve public health problems. Objective: To identify the barriers and enabling factors to advocacy in Kentucky local health departments. Methods: Kentucky health policymakers and advocates were interviewed to determine which advocacy skills were effective and appropriate for use …

Once A Queen In Narnia: Susan And The Divine In C.S. Lewis’S Chronicles Of Narnia, Amanda Kathleen Patchin Aug 2011

Once A Queen In Narnia: Susan And The Divine In C.S. Lewis’S Chronicles Of Narnia, Amanda Kathleen Patchin

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia ends with the absence of one the main characters. Susan Pevensie is not included in the reunion at the end of The Last Battle. Other characters attribute her absence to exclusive interest in “nylons and lipstick and invitations.” There is a blank space in Susan’s story related to her absence from The Last Battle and in this space critics have inscribed a variety of meanings. Critics argued that Lewis found beauty and femininity to be suspiciously evil and that in order for a girl to succeed in Narnia she must reject them to become …
