Addressing Biased Occurrence Data In Predicting Potential Sierra Nevada Red Fox Habitat For Survey Prioritization, Casey Cleve, John D. Perrine, Barbara Holzman, Ellen Hines
Biological Sciences
The Sierra Nevada red fox Vulpes vulpes necator is listed as a threatened species under the California Endangered Species Act. It originally occurred throughout California’s Cascade and Sierra Nevada mountain regions. Its current distribution is unknown but should be determined in order to guide management actions. We used occurrence data from the only known population, in the Lassen Peak region of northern California, combined with climatic and remotely sensed variables, to predict the species’ potential distribution throughout its historic range. These model predictions can guide future surveys to locate additional fox populations. Moreover, they allow us to compare the relative …
Determining The Viability Of A Hybrid Experiential And Distance Learning Educational Model For Water Treatment Plant Operators In Kentucky, Jana R. Fattic
Determining The Viability Of A Hybrid Experiential And Distance Learning Educational Model For Water Treatment Plant Operators In Kentucky, Jana R. Fattic
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Drinking water and wastewater industries are facing a nationwide workforce shortfall of qualified treatment plant operators due to factors including the en masse retirement of baby boomers and the tightening of regulatory requirements regarding the hands-on experience required prior to licensure. Rural areas are hardest hit due to the lack of educational and experiential opportunities available to them within a reasonable proximity. Using a variety of demographic and industry data, a geographic analysis of Kentucky was conducted to assess the viability of the traditional classroom delivery model versus a hybrid experiential and distance learning educational model (HEDLEM). Although this analysis …

Multinational Teams: The Relationship Between Work Values And Productivity And The Moderating Effect Of Degree Of Operational Integration, Kelly C. Kinnebrew
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The present study gathered data from 147 employees in two U.S. headquartered multinational manufacturing companies. Participants responded to questions about their work-related values, perceptions of the productivity of their work teams, and the degree of operational integration between firms‟ foreign affiliate offices and their U.S. based headquarters. Additionally, analyses were conducted to assess the relationship between team productivity and psychic distance, which is a measure of country-level cultural differences. Work values were assessed using The Values Scale (Neville & Super, 1989), perceptions of team productivity were assessed used an instrument by Kirkman and Rosen (1999), degree of operational integration was …

Audience Development Of An Emerging Theatre Company In Charlotte, North Carolina, Jennifer Quigley
Graduate Theses
Many studies exist on the topic of audience development for arts organizations. This paper specifically seeks to study the methods of audience development for emerging theatre companies in Charlotte, North Carolina in the early 21st century. My research compares published information on audience development to that of a successful emerging theatre company. After comparing this information, I provide an eight step guide of audience development strategies for emerging theatre companies.

Curating Cultures: An Empirical Inquiry, Toni Laviece Calder
Curating Cultures: An Empirical Inquiry, Toni Laviece Calder
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The last twenty-five years have witnessed not only a veritable explosion of critical discourses across the entire gamut of academic disciplines, but also the virtual inseparability that characterizes their contemporary entanglement with one another and within the field of art history. Moreover, it is safe to say that each and every one of those fields of inquiry has made its mark on the discourse of non-Western art in some way. But while the post-colonial writer may address the visual arts and their involvement in Western cultural hegemony, or the curator of an exhibition might quote Said, or the catalogue might …
The Complexity Of Domestic Interiors: Laurie Simmons's Depiction Of Women's Identity In The Home, Lauren Elise Cesiro
The Complexity Of Domestic Interiors: Laurie Simmons's Depiction Of Women's Identity In The Home, Lauren Elise Cesiro
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Laurie Simmons was among a group of artists in the 1980’s working in photography, film, video, and performance who recognized the influence of the mass media on the American public. Simmons used her art practice to comment on these images tailored to the consumer. Much of her photographic work of dolls and dollhouses challenges the viewer’s concept of the relationship between women and their domestic interiors. This thesis examines three photographs from the following series: Color Coordinated Interiors (1982-1983), The Instant Decorator (2001-2004), and The Long House (2002-2004). In these series, Simmons presents the home as a complex environment that …

The Economics Of Lotteries: A Survey Of The Literature, Kent Grote, Victor Matheson
The Economics Of Lotteries: A Survey Of The Literature, Kent Grote, Victor Matheson
Economics Department Working Papers
Lotteries represent an important source of government revenues in many states and countries, so they are of interest to public finance economists. In addition, lotteries provide researchers interested in microeconomic theory and consumer behavior with a type of experimental lab that allows economists to explore these topics. This paper surveys the existing literature on lotteries organized around these two central themes. The first section examines the microeconomic aspects of lotteries including consumer decision-making under uncertainty, price and income elasticities of demand for lottery tickets, cross-price elasticities of lottery ticket to each other and to other gambling products, consumer rationality and …
A Climatology Of High-Wind Events Associated With Post-Tropical Cyclones In The United States, Joshua M. Gilliland
A Climatology Of High-Wind Events Associated With Post-Tropical Cyclones In The United States, Joshua M. Gilliland
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
During 1951-2009, 47% of all tropical systems (TSs) within the Atlantic Basin transitioned to post-tropical (PTC) extratropical classification. These systems have shown the capability of producing hurricane-force winds and gusts for portions of the eastern United States. This study provides a climatological foundation for high-wind observations that were contributed from PTCs. In this study, 76 PTC systems were identified and tracked using six hourly observations from the National Hurricane Center’s HURDAT dataset. Mean wind radii buffers were calculated and used to determine the high-wind observations attributed by PTCs. High-wind climatology was developed by using hourly surface wind data from the …
Re-Visioning The Semantic And Semiotic Registers In The Study Of Culture And Religion, Gary S. Bedford
Re-Visioning The Semantic And Semiotic Registers In The Study Of Culture And Religion, Gary S. Bedford
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The term `God' may be understood as the desire for the complete epistemological condition of thought; language expresses this condition in statements of `meaning.' `Religion' expresses this desire in texts and ritual practice which may be examined by in academic study; however, because the `third term' of religio is understood as the condition of being `bounded to or by,' the study of religion is itself bounded to or by this desire for the completion of thought. This desire cannot be understood as an `alterity' of thought but is rather the internal native or `alter-native' condition of thought itself. …
Postcolonial Transformation Of The Australian Indigenous Population, John Taylor
Postcolonial Transformation Of The Australian Indigenous Population, John Taylor
Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)
The 1967 constitutional referendum paved the way for the application of a single national methodology for the construction of a self-identified Indigenous popu- lation via census, survey, and administrative data collection and these sources have provided for statistically meaningful official estimates of Indigenous popu- lation growth and spatial redistribution as well as for some understanding of the dynamics underpinning change. The primary purpose of this paper is to outline the course of this change and to reflect on matters arising that are of concern and interest to public debate on population growth and its implications. To do this meaningfully it …

Joint Fire Science Program Digests
The best available science is of little use if it gathers dust on the shelves of library stacks or is deeply embedded on an obscure website. A key part of the Joint Fire Science Program (JFSP) mission is to ensure research on wildland fire science is readily available to practitioners in a useful format so it can help support sound management decisions. The JFSP has made great inroads in this arena on a national level, but managers short on time often have to sift through an overload of information that may not be specific to their region. In the next …

Warm Season Convective Storm Structures Over The Northeastern U.S. And Their Interaction With The Marine Environment, Kelly Lombardo
Warm Season Convective Storm Structures Over The Northeastern U.S. And Their Interaction With The Marine Environment, Kelly Lombardo
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The evolution of organized convective structures over the northeastern U.S. from initiation to decay is influenced by a variety of geographical features (elevated terrain, coastal boundary). Warm season convection over this region has been relatively unexplored, especially the interaction between quasi-linear convective structures (QLCSs) and the marine environment. This thesis is the first study to systematically explore the evolving convective structures over the Northeast, with particular emphasis on the coastal region from New Jersey northeastward to Rhode Island, through observational analysis as well as high-resolution simulations of 2 representative case studies. Organized convective structures over the Northeast during the warm …
The Effects Of Backward-Designed Curriculum And Instruction On Classroom Management, Tyrone Burson
The Effects Of Backward-Designed Curriculum And Instruction On Classroom Management, Tyrone Burson
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the link between interesting, purposeful work and positive classroom behavior. The backward design model proposed by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe was the foundation for establishing interesting, purposeful work. Their curriculum and instruction model termed Backward Design is a three-stage approach to curriculum design consisting of determining the desired results, acceptable evidence, and the instruction to bring about the desired results. In the review of literature, the researcher was unable to find a study specifically investigating the relationship between classroom behavior, classroom management, and the employment of backward-designed curriculum and instruction. However, …
A Descriptive Study Of The Relationship Between Teacher Mentoring Programs And Retention Rates, Lisa D. Anderson
A Descriptive Study Of The Relationship Between Teacher Mentoring Programs And Retention Rates, Lisa D. Anderson
Dissertations
The design of this descriptive study is to identify those factors contributing to the high rate of early career teacher attrition and to identify a means for its reduction. The subjects for this study were limited to teachers from the southwest section of a Midwestern state. Five school districts were randomly selected based upon the researcher having previously met school district personnel in various professional settings and request letters were sent to superintendents and building principals. Voluntary teacher participation in completing a short, internet-based survey served as the basis with five districts responding. These districts, while confined to a southwest …

Simulation Modeling And Analysis Of A Multi-Resource Medical Clinic., Bo Sun
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Healthy for Life is a relatively new University of Louisville medical clinic which attempts to stem the epidemic of childhood obesity. This program offers a range of face-to-face services for overweight children. The main problem addressed by this research is the no show rate (nearly 50%) of the clinic. There are two goals of this thesis. One is to increase the staff utilization; the other is to decrease the waiting time. In this thesis, we study two potential methods to solve this problem. One involves using multiple resources for every visit; the other involves overbooking the patients. Two simulation models …

Geochemical Analysis Of Long Island Sound Sediments, Jaroslaw W. Slusarczyk
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
As one of the largest estuarine systems in the northeastern United States, Long Island Sound (LIS) has been exposed to human activities for many centuries. Human settlement and population growth in the last 200 years has caused heavy pollution in LIS through inland and shore industrial and municipal releases. The geochemistry of one sediment core and numerous surface sediment samples were analyzed using environmental forensic techniques. This study employed use of pyrolysis gas chromatography/ mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) in conjunction with previously analyzed geochemical and radiometric data to study contamination sources and patterns though LIS. Geochemical analysis of samples was focused …

Besieged: British-American Forts, Families, And Communities In The Seven Years' War, 1755-1763, Elizabeth Bartlett Hornor
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation examines interactions between civilians and the military during the Seven Years' War in the British North American colonies. The settings of those interactions were seven forts located along three corridors that encompassed British, French, and Native American territory. The corridors include the region between Philadelphia/Alexandria and the Ohio River, the territory between Albany and the Great Lakes, and the area between Albany and Quebec/Montreal. This project traverses the divide between histories of colonial society and histories of the war by using letters, personal journals, newspapers, memoirs, wills, and colonial and military records to explore backcountry communities and their …
